The MLB First Year Player Draft is finally here, and in Prime Time! The draft starts at 7pm, with a pre-draft show at 6pm on the MLB Network. The Braves have one pick tonight, the overall number-35 selection, which is in the supplemental first round. If you have not yet heard, Atlanta had to surrender their first-round pick to Boston because they signed Billy Wagner. The Braves got the 35th pick as compensation for the Orioles signing of Mike Gonzalez (their first round pick was protected, but the Braves do get their second-round pick).
For those of you who want some massive in-depth information on the kids who get drafted, go to MLB Bonus Baby (SB Nation's MLB Draft Blog -- yes, SB Nation covers everything) and pick up your copy of their 2010 MLB Draft Notebook. It's 755 profiles (nice number!), and draft profiles for all 30 teams, for only $9.99. It's also a good way to support independent scouts like Andy Seiler who put the book together. It's via PDF, so if you buy it today, you'll have it today.
If you'd like, in the comments go ahead and toss out your guess for who you think the Braves will pick at number-35. Even though a lot of people have him going at the end of the first round and not lasting into the supplemental round, I'm going go out on a limb and say that Cam Bedrosian will fall to the Braves at 35. Even though the Braves say they're going to focus on bats, they won't be able to pass up little-Bedrock if he's still on the board.

Austin Wilson falls to 35. Heyward’s ascension to stardom pushes him over the edge and he signs for $1.2 million.
You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.
PWHjort - June 7, 2010
if we do get Wilson
we’ll have an impressive bunch of smartypants, or players who have connections with smartypants schools in our organization:
Wilson (Stanford, parents: MIT, Stanford, Harvard MBAs)
Minor (Vanderbilt)
Hale (Princeton)
Heyward (UCLA, parents: Dartmouth)
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
before you curse out rafael soriano (like i did) for costing us picks
here’s Keith Law’s take on this year’s draft:
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
plus, Salcedo fills in nicely as a 1st rounder in my eyes.
Smoltz's Beard - June 7, 2010
Agreed
A good international scouting and signing apparatus is always a nice thing to have to suppliment your draft.
Speaking of those words…our pick is listed above as being available in the “supplimental first round.” Does that make him a “sandwich pick”?
Sam Jethroe - June 7, 2010
yeah, supplemental first pick is a sandwich pick
telemakhos - June 7, 2010
It's silly
But I just love that term. Seems like a great way to start your professional career.
Probably wouldn’t be so much fun for a guy like Prince Fielder.
Sam Jethroe - June 7, 2010
Who?
yondaime4 - June 7, 2010
a pick in a bad draft is better than jesse chavez
telemakhos - June 7, 2010
TRUTH
VERY TRUE!!!
THIS IS A TRUE STATEMENT!
MBL1 - June 7, 2010 via mobile
I would rather have no Chavez at all than Chavez for anything. why is he still on the team?
jaypatel - June 7, 2010
I'd still rather have the picks than Chavez, like telemakhos said
Mr. Sanchez - June 7, 2010
can we have a special draft version of NAHWAL?
worth 10 points or something like that?
i would definitely play it.
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
That’d be fun.
MBL1 - June 7, 2010 via mobile
How about...
Jason’s lil bro, jacob heyward?
Nah, just kidding. The other JHey is 15. But people are already scouting him.
MBL1 - June 7, 2010 via mobile
My take...
Why would the braves focus on hitting.
I think the object of every draft, in MLB is to just take the best players available. If we end up having a mega-surplus of pitching…. we can just trade for position players. The goal should be to accumulate value.
Braves Biceps - June 7, 2010
Too bad i don’t get mlb network…
MBL1 - June 7, 2010 via mobile
streamed live on mlb.com, i believe
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
thanks, i’ll watch some of it if i can. Of course mlb probably charges to watch it. darn mlb
MBL1 - June 7, 2010 via mobile
i think i watched last year for no charge. and the quality was probably 100x better than mlb.tv
VivaLosBravos - June 7, 2010
go fix your NAHWAL post… (that sounded awfully cold, i’m sorry)
GoBravesNY - June 7, 2010
I have nothing of value to add to this thread, or any open thread for that matter. But I will watch anyway.
bpk228480 - June 7, 2010

(you have something of value to add to some open thread, somewhere, sometime.)
fandave - June 7, 2010
lol why thank you….
bpk228480 - June 7, 2010
My shot in the dark choice is kaleb cowart. Signability concerns will cause him to slip. I could see a few more teams this year saying screw you to bud selig’s slotting after last year’s fiasco. The commissioner’s office held out guys like minor because of a 10% decrease in slot values from 08 even though minor ended up signing for 08 slot money. If teams try to stick to slot and get screwed out of months of development time anyway, then why follow the stupid un-enforced system.
In reality, I’d have to guess Garin Cecchini, Aaron Shipman, or someone no one has ever heard of.
telemakhos - June 7, 2010
I really do think we should take a go at him if he's there at #35.
Either him or Austin Wilson. They would definitely be the BPA at that point.
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
woah
Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo both have Yasmani Grandal going at 25.
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
What are the chances Drew Pomeranz is around at #35?
TradeAndruw - June 7, 2010
about exactly 0.0%
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
0.0
But the dude from LSU might be there.
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
grandal from miami
would be pretty sweet.
kbertling353 - June 7, 2010
lol
I love the commentators who say that they wouldn’t pick Harper.
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
yea
i thought harper was a consensus #1?
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
I would assume that he is...
but they’re just saying they’d take Tallion or Machado just to be different and to get people like me up in an indignant tizzy.
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
yea, probably
atl192485 - June 7, 2010

VivaLosBravos - June 7, 2010
Neat to see Pat Corrales there, even if it is for the Nats.

anyone else miss him as much as i do?

It's Pat!

HEYJUDE - June 7, 2010
Bryce Harper
bravesforever16 - June 7, 2010

bravesforever16 - June 7, 2010

harper was announced as an outfielder.
telemakhos - June 7, 2010
intentional
i believe
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
intentional
and stupid. Positional scarcity is half of the appeal
telemakhos - June 7, 2010
harper has a “lock” for 500 HR
LOL
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
Damn.
I thought he would fall to us!
The Nationals are building themselves quite a compelling team with Strasburg, Harper (if he pans out), Zimmerman, and Storen, with some nice pieces like Desmond, Detwiler, etc. I’d like to see them become competitive, espeically for baseball in DC.
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
Pittsburgh should take Taillon.
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
pirates pick taillon
wonder when they’ll trade him for prospects to “rebuild”
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
they're working on a package right now
RichmondBraves - June 7, 2010
How is their pitching so awful? So many injuries/busts.
TradeAndruw - June 7, 2010
Weren’t they the team who had selected a pitcher in the 1st round of 3 or 4 straight drafts and each one had to have shoulder or elbow surgery within 3 years? I’m pretty sure i remember that.
Scott Coleman - June 7, 2010
Bryce Harper looks like a tool with all that eyeblack on. I already don’t like that little douchebag.
Scott Coleman - June 7, 2010
apparently, looks aside
he really is a douchebag
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
i can’t figure out whether he’s predicting that he will break all the records, or just hoping to
Bravely going forward - June 7, 2010
Oh he is. One of my best friends from high school went to a baseball camp with Harper a year or two ago. He struck Harper out twice in the inter-squad games, and Harper still talked shit to him afterwards.
Scott Coleman - June 7, 2010
if harper pans out
your friend might receive a lot of media attention, like the one dude who was the only pitcher to ever strike out joe mauer in high school
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
I struck Pujols out three times on nine total pitches.
TradeAndruw - June 7, 2010
haha
MLB The Show is a great game, huh?
Scott Coleman - June 7, 2010
Oh, it wasn’t an official game or anything. Too bad though.
Scott Coleman - June 7, 2010
like this guy?
Bravely going forward - June 7, 2010
He signed with boras.... isn't that basically announcing to the world...
ya know I just really want money.
I also think Harper should team up with Francouer with the mets. How much unintentional comedy would that combo produce?
Braves Biceps - June 7, 2010
Machado 3
Colon 4
ShawnG - June 7, 2010
no Grandal.
interesting.
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
I don’t like the way they do this draft on TV. The set looks really cheap.
TradeAndruw - June 7, 2010
isn't it the same set they tape mlb network?
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
Yeah. I can even see the strings controlling Gammons’ movements.

wtf does that even mean?

Maybe he’s from Winning?
bwellnjonesco - June 7, 2010
“we haven’t seen a college arm come off the board yet”….didn’t see that coming
bpk228480 - June 7, 2010
drew pomeranz
will win a Cy Young, and then get traded. take it to the bank
atl192485 - June 7, 2010
We need Mel Kiper.
I miss his sentient hair.
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
Drew Pomeranz has great hair.
blitzerlover - June 7, 2010
Not gonna lie, I definitely prefer the NBA draft…two rounds and I know 95% of the players taken.
bpk228480 - June 7, 2010
agreed.
Braves Biceps - June 7, 2010
Yeah, I have to keep a mock draft in front of me to remember the players.
And even then its hard to form an opinion of a guy…especially since all you really see are brief scouting reports. So I just shrug and just watch for the guys that I like to see if they stay on the board.
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
these pitchers are huge. They’re all 6’5 200lb
telemakhos - June 7, 2010
Really hope Stetson Allie falls to the braves. Guy looks like a stud.
blitzerlover - June 7, 2010
Didnt the Mets get Ike Davis with the pick they got from us when we signed that guy who used to be Tom Glavine?
!Vive la Francoeur! - June 7, 2010
yep.
Braves Biceps - June 7, 2010
don't worry
ike davis isn’t a great prospect anyway
telemakhos - June 7, 2010
Largely because he's been in the majors long enough to use up his prospect status already.
He’s only got a .353 wOBA as a rookie…
Stephen Schmidt - June 7, 2010
i wonder what nats fans are saying about harper right now…has anyone strolled over there yet?
Bravely going forward - June 7, 2010

Scott Coleman - June 7, 2010
yeah, i was surprised
Bravely going forward - June 7, 2010
Maybe they have other communities.
Bronn - June 7, 2010
To be fair
Most Nats fans are fans of other teams for the most part. I mean, the Expos didn’t exactly bring a huge following to Washington, but most people in that area are Braves fans or Orioles fans (or Sox fans of course), so the Nationals until they start winning are second fiddle.
Btw, I’m totally seeing Strasburg tomorrow.

Okay, I don't follow the prospects at all
I know the name “Bryce Harper” and nothing else.
So who are the Braves going to draft and why?
Bronn - June 7, 2010
Really hard to tell at this point. Way to many picks between now and the Braves pick.
blitzerlover - June 7, 2010
that doesn't sound hispanic to me
bpk228480 - June 7, 2010

don’t mets draft whiteys, then sign hispanics to free agents?

romone_braves91 - June 7, 2010
Naw. The idea of a hypothetical director’s cut of Frenchy’s Spotlight strikes me as funny. I’m imagining a commentary track of mostly vapid comments from Jeff, a behind-the-scenes featurette and an Easter egg that, when unlocked, offers any fan who actually purchased the DVD a full refund.

Also, reds got the steal of the draft so far in my opinion. I saw Grandal play a few times this spring and that guy is legit.
DogDaysofSummer - June 7, 2010
PeMo
which one was this?
bpk228480 - June 7, 2010
The whole night pretty much.
Especially the post game.
I still think peter moylan got unlucky though. If prado was playing in normal position rather than covering 2nd, thats at least one out. Not to mention the sweet play on Heyward’s LOLTHROW which was only outmatched by dewitt’s absurdly awesome slide.
DogDaysofSummer - June 7, 2010

still on the board, he’s the college hitter from Arkansas that is probably slipping because of signability.

MLB draft is weird.
You will probably not get to see any of these guys until 2012 at the earliest (with an exception to those special guys). I remember the Braves getting Heyward during the 2007 draft when it was televise on ESPN and was like “OK so we won’t see him until 2010 cool?”

UMass12 - June 7, 2010
Praying for castellanos
esadb - June 7, 2010
praying that we draft castellanos anyways
esadb - June 7, 2010
My vote is Asher Wojciechowski
ShawnG - June 7, 2010
No thanks, he's thrown like 1000 innings in college.
UMass12 - June 7, 2010
Or Brentz. Both were projected top 15
ShawnG - June 7, 2010
brentz would be awesome
love his pop and lord knows we could use some hitting prospects
Qtips - June 7, 2010
Just wondering would ya'll rather have the Braves pick the best available player (a pitcher) or the the best available position player.
I’d rather get the best player
bravesforever16 - June 7, 2010
Reggie Golden
Right now, Reggie Golden is at the top of my wish list. I also like what I have read about Zach Alvord. My fear is that Atlanta is going to go with a college hitter like Jarrod Parker or Austin Wates.
KB21 - June 7, 2010
I like Castellanos
UMass12 - June 7, 2010
Vettleson and wilson also available
esadb - June 7, 2010
Allie, Cole, Eibner
esadb - June 7, 2010
Bryce Brentz is a good one too IMO
UMass12 - June 7, 2010
does anyone like brentz?
VivaLosBravos - June 7, 2010
Me
ShawnG - June 7, 2010
I like him, but I'm partial
being from Tennessee
Qtips - June 7, 2010
Forgot about him.
He’s a heck of a hitter. Heard him on the radio the other day. He ended up at Middle Tennessee State because he says Mississippi State told him that they were full in the outfield and needed a middle infielder. That’s a good reason why MSU is down right now.
KB21 - June 7, 2010
Also got turned away from UT because they said they were full
and he was right in their backyard. Although I think it was between him and Kentrail Davis that year, and Davis turned out to be a stud as well.
Qtips - June 7, 2010
fo sho
VivaLosBravos - June 7, 2010

drumzalicious - June 7, 2010

dank7 - June 7, 2010

VivaLosBravos - June 7, 2010

Qtips - June 7, 2010

VivaLosBravos - June 7, 2010
athletic SS who is a WR also
dank7 - June 7, 2010
Just glad it's a position player
UMass12 - June 7, 2010
maybe theyre looking to move him to 3b down the line
Qtips - June 7, 2010
Scouting Report on him suggests centerfield.
Report on him says he is a heck of an athlete that tends to pull off his pitches.
KB21 - June 7, 2010
*shrug
Don’t know who he is, but I trust our staff.
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
I hear he might be expensive to sign
esadb - June 7, 2010
Brentz for the pick after us
dank7 - June 7, 2010
i know.
fuck
Qtips - June 7, 2010
When you discuss who the best all-around athletes are nationwide in the 2010 MLB Draft, Matt Lipka is a player who should be right there. As an All-State receiver at McKinney (TX) HS, he put up numbers that made him a prospect for SEC and Big-12 schools. As a baseball player, he’s put up some right-handed running times that make him a 70 or 80 runner. Offensively, I lnever saw him as limited. I liked the guy in the summer. He traded power for a consistent approach this season. Over time, Lipka seems to have a very clear idea of what kind of player he envisions himself becoming.
ShawnG - June 7, 2010
is this you or a copy paste job?
VivaLosBravos - June 7, 2010
c/p
ShawnG - June 7, 2010
from who?
Lipka’s mom?
coldriver10 - June 7, 2010
I kid. I know nothing about the guy. I trust our scouts!

hmm
so a RH lead off hitter?
drumzalicious - June 7, 2010
matt lipka
76. Matt Lipka, ss
McKinney (Texas) HS
McKinney quarterback/righthander Zach Lee may continue to play two sports at Louisiana State, but his top wide receiver will focus on baseball, either in pro ball or at Alabama. A two-time 4-A all-state wide receiver in Texas, Lipka caught 22 touchdown passes from Lee last fall. He’s one of the fastest prospects in the draft, capable of running the 60-yard dash in 6.4 seconds. He’s a quick-twitch athlete with strength in his 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame. A righthanded hitter, he has strong hands and bat speed, though he gets jammed more than he should. He employs a line-drive stroke but has a chance for at least average power. Lipka has the athleticism and arm strength to play shortstop, but his hands and actions are questionable. He’ll get the opportunity to play shortstop as a pro, and he also profiles well as a center fielder. While Lee is considered one of the draft’s most unsignable players, Lipka should sign if he goes in the first three rounds as expected.
telemakhos - June 7, 2010
this was from BA
telemakhos - June 7, 2010
awesome, thanks
VivaLosBravos - June 7, 2010
defensively, athleticism and arm strength are a lot more important than hands for a prospect.
VivaLosBravos - June 7, 2010
And there goes Ranaudo
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
what do we think?
dank7 - June 7, 2010
Looks very raw.
Hopefully we can develop him well, and that he signs for cheap money.
soup du jour - June 7, 2010
I'm not big on drafting college players, but
Boston is getting some of the better ones. They have taken Kolbren Vitek, Bryce Brentz, and now Anthony Ranaudo. Of course, Ranaudo may have been used up in college.

ShawnG - June 7, 2010
Wow!
I can’t believe Bolden went this high. I didn’t even think he was the better prospect in Mississippi. I thought Jacoby Jones was. There must be more to Jacoby’s shoulder injury than meets the eye.
KB21 - June 7, 2010
Jacoby Jones plays for the texans, silly
Qtips - June 7, 2010
He is also a high school short stop from Richton, MS

ShawnG - June 7, 2010
So.
Will we develop him as an OFer or SS?
drumzalicious - June 7, 2010
considering our extreme lack of infield prospects, I’d say we’ll leave him at short
