Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/27

Gwinnett 11, Columbus 7

  • M. Young 2-4 2B, 2 RBI, BB, SB(13), .306 Avg
  • M. Diaz 2-4 2B, 3 RBI, .429 Avg
  • F. Freeman 2-3 2 2B, RBI, 2BB, .277 Ag
  • M. Dunn 2IP 0H 0R 1BB 3K .72 ERA
  • C. Kimbrel 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K 1.08 ERA

The Braves get a Hanson-esque performance from JoJo Reyes but are bailed out by great hitting from just about everyone. And if anyone asks, no Jordan Schafer did not play. I am really happy to see Freddie Freeman have this game because, while he has held his own this season, I haven't seen him have very many big games (the 2 HR game from early last month comes to mind). His OPS is up to .787 on the season which is pretty fantastic for a 20 year old in AAA and for the month he has put up an .843 mark. Not too shabby sir.

Mobile 0, Mississippi 9

  • W. Cabrera 3-4 2 2B, 2 RBI, BB, SB(6), .322 Avg
  • A. Machado 3-5 2 2B, 2 RBI, .299 Avg
  • S. Diamond 6IP 6H 0R 6BB 0K 3.80 ERA

There is something going on with the farm teams - two teams put up 9 runs tonight? I thought were were pitching heavy? I'll take it. Scott Diamond showed why groundball pitchers have been in vogue recently and why they have bad peripherals and still succeed - he had a 15-2 GB:FB split tonight. That is pretty freaking out of control. Also: Willie Cabrera = My Boy.

Myrtle Beach 11, Lynchburg 8

  • D. Nelson 2-5 2 2B, 3 RBI, K, .277 Avg
  • L. Sumoza 3-4 2B, 3 RBI, BB, .222 Avg
  • JJ. Hoover 4.2IP 9H 4R 1BB 3K 4.35 ERA

Holy Crap!??! Three teams with 9+ runs? What is the world coming to? Also on a note of crazy happenings there was a Luis Sumoza sighting tonight as well. You guys remember him right? We got him from Boston a couple of years ago for Mark Kotsay. He is a toolsy OFer who showed some flashes in Rome last year but has yet to develop any semblance of plate discipline or over the fence power. You still can't give up on the guy because even though it feels like he has been around forever he doesn't turn 22 until July 15.

Rome 6, Lexington 3

  • T. Cunningham 1-3 2 RBI, BB, K, SB(1), .176 Avg
  • RSF 2-4 2B, 3B, RBI, K, .300 Avg
  • P. Gosselin 3-4 RBI, .571 Avg

More offense from the Braves farm with Rome pounding out 12 hits in their winning effort. Phil Gosselin continues to be unimpressed with what the rest of the world considers 'professional' baseball while RSF knocked off the rust after his long layoff. I really won't know what to think about him until I see him succeed in High A and AA.

Danville 2, Bluefield 6

  • R. Flores 2-5 PO, .346 Avg
  • A. Simmons 2-4 RBI, SB(1), .286 Avg
  • C. Perez 5IP 3H 1R 4BB 5K .90 ERA

Carlos Perez might have more upside than anyone on this team. Keep that in mind as he dominates the Appy league this summer. He might be a little wild now (kind of like Tyler Stovall of last season) but if the Braves can harness his stuff and get him throwing strikes we could have another top level minor league pitcher.

GCL Braves - Off

DSL Braves 5, DSL Tigers 2

  • G. Reyes 2-5 RBI, SB(7), .262 Avg
  • F. Marte 2-4 2 HR(2), 4 RBI, 2K, .258 Avg
  • H. Garcia 2-4 K, 2 SB(7), .292 avg
  • E. Medina 4IP 0H 0R 1BB 4K 3.48 ERA

Felix Marte muscles up as the DSL Braves get some big league redemption (actually this game was played this morning, but who's keeping track?). Marte flashed some power last season as well and 8 of his 16 hits this season have gone for extra bases. His big issue is the strike outs as he has compiled 26 in just 62 ABs so far. Ouch. Edward Salcedo did not appear in today's game.

Young and Dunn are both doing good this season. Dunn should be up instead of Chavez/Martinez and Young should be up instead of Blanco. What are you thinking Wren. Dunn should be in Atlanta

He got 34 days of service last year.

So they probably want to keep him down for another week so, eliminating the possibility he’s a super-2. Also, it’s not like his game has been flawless—he’s walked a few more than you’d like.

If Heyward had to go on the DL (not saying he should or will)

Anyone think Cabrera should be the guy to take his place? I mean I guess Schafer was considered next in line since we almost called him up for McLouth., and I’m assuming Cabrera isn’t on the 40 man, so that presents a problem.

Matt Young maybe?

Where did Perez and Cabrera come from?

Perez was signed out of the Domincan Republic 1 or 2 years ago. Cabrera is From SoCal and was drafted out of a Los Angeles Junior College in the 14th round of the ’05 draft.

Perez was a July 2, 2008 sign.

It was a pretty big deal. It wasn’t Teheran/Salcedo big, but he still got a $600,000 bonus. I think it’s a better investment than the $600,000 they gave Bethancourt.

Better as in very good compared to "just" good?
Speaking of Bethancourt

any word on him? Once again he didn’t play. If he’s got a serious issue, it’s not anything I’ve heard about.

He got hit with a ball during a game earlier this week, nothing serious. He’s fine, just banged-up catcher stuff. They aren’t gonna take any chances with him. The Braves have GOBS of catchers piled up at the lower levels so they rotate them in and out fairly often when the primary guys need a rest (for whatever reason).

Is that an up to Perez or down to Bethancourt?...

Both are late 91 birthdays (early Sep for CB, late Nov for CP). But Bethancourt is already at a higher level, and has been all year. Bethancourt did better last year when both were the same age for GCL, and while he’s had some struggles for Rome, the 10 2B and improving average are encouraging. When you add in his supposed strong D and the precarious nature of young arms, I’m not sure I see the reasoning behind saying Perez was the better investment.

I agree. Of course, I think Bethancourt is a special player, but that’s just me.

We might have seen Salcedo's last DSL game.

He’s scheduled to come to the states on July 1, so his foreign career might be over.

yeah I was thinking that might be the case considering I think he is the only player who hasn’t missed a single game for the DSL swquad.

Carlos Perez approves:

Luis Sumoza also approves, but grudgingly:

The shutter speed on the camera that took that Perez picture... wow, nice camera

It’s not even an SLR. I think it was on 2000, which is the highest setting on it. It also doesn’t hurt that I was standing about a foot behind the catcher.

umpiring?

Haha, no. It was during ST in one of the bullpens which basically starts just behind the pitcher and ends just behind the catcher, so you can get some crazy good pictures.

Carlos Perez

looks like Smeagle.

.72 ERA

Is that a misprint? Or a case of SSS?

For Mike Dunn? 37.1 innings, a 0.72 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. Pretty great. In 57.1 AAA innings between last year and this year he has a 1.26 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.

i mean resop

had some good stats in AAA

I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean. Resop did have some great stats in AAA, then he came to the Majors and got hurt and played poorly before having to go on the DL. Trust me, the Resop that pitched in that 1 game for Atlanta wasn’t healthy. Chris Resop can’t throw and 89 mph fastball if he’s healthy, he just can’t dial it down that far.

That's the truth

I mean, he maxed out about 93 in the one appearance he had, and he’s got gas to dial up to 98 if he wants it. At first I thought he was trying hard to be too fine, aiming his pitches, but when I saw a fastball coming across the plate at 90 MPH I was really confused. It made a little sense that he was hurt, once I got over the initial humor at a struggling player immediately being placed on the DL.

JoJo Reyes

threw 107 pitches in 4 innings. Dude is FILTHY.

filthly

like my grandma’s old dog who repeatedly shat his bed and licked his crotch.

wilk

tahkns for the minor league recaps. love them. i like the idea that down the road i can be like oh yeah we knew abou this guy befoer anyone because wilk is the man.

fail

yondaime thank you.
you still have the best avatar.

The second half numbers for Freeman, Schafer, and Co Jo are what really matter...

considering the other factors, their first half numbers are pretty much worthless in comparison. If Freeman can get back to the 800-850+ ops in the second half, I’m thinking that’s all he needs to be slotted into 1B next year.

Also, it really seems like 3rd round pick Joe Leonard...

has signed, or at least agreed to terms, with an announcement coming later.
http://www.pittsburghpanthers.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/062310aaa.html
That’s the second time the school’s releases have listed him as "Former Pitt third baseman/relief pitcher Joe Leonard ".

Nice, thanks.
I think it was cb the other day who said...

they very well may have an agreement in place, but are letting him get a little rest in. Although I don’t think Pitt made the NCAA tourney so he’d have had time to rest up, and with the need at 3B you’d think they’d want him in quick to see if he can possibly move up the system quickly. Then again, maybe he’s a few credits short and is trying to finish his degree now in a short/summer session and they are letting him do so.

Either way, that both Pitt releases on Leonard making the All East region and now All American describing him as a “former” player, makes it seem like he’s already gone with the question just being how much for and when it’s announced.

Selig also might be requesting the Braves delay the announcement

If it’s an over-slot bonus. But Leonard seemed eager to play, so there’s that.

I had forgotten about that potential delay, ala Mike Minor last year...

thanks.

Is the Diaz listed for Gwinnett Matt Diaz?

I heard he was starting his rehab assignment today, but if he started yesterday, even better. And let’s face it, if he is hitting in the first couple games of the rehab assignment, and Heyward needs a DL trip, we should just activate him.
