Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/24

Buffalo 4, Gwinnett 10

  • J. Schafer 1-5 2B, 3K, .218 Avg
  • W. Timmons 2-5 2B, 2 RBI, SB(12), .285 Avg
  • D. Hernandez 4-5 2 RBI,SB(2), .333 Avg
  • M. Young 3-5 .293 Avg
  • J. Jurrjens 6IP 7H 4R 1BB 1K
  • S. Marek 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K 1.50 ERA

Jair Jurrjens continues his comeback trail tonight by pitching a solid game though I am not at all thrilled about his peripherals. He threw just 81 pitches and induced 12 groundouts vs just 3 flyouts. Diory Hernandez celebrated his return to the 40 man roster with a bunch of hits but I still have no clue why we have him back on the roster. Freddie Freeman also ended his 9 game hit streak but still collected an RBI and a BB.

Mobile 1, Mississippi 2

  • W. Cabrera 1-4 2B, .311 Avg
  • D. Linares 2-3 .253 Avg
  • B. Beachy 7IP 2H 0R 2BB 7K 1.27 ERA

Brandon Beachy is turning into Kris Medlen 2.0. Beachy has pitched most of his career out of the pen (though with 8 starts for Myrtle Beach last season) but switched to starting last game - not unlike Kris Medlen did in AA a couple years ago - and has excelled in his two starts thus far - not unlike Kris Medlen a couple years ago. Beachy is 23 years old but could they catch lightening in a bottle twice in a row like this? More likely they are just getting him some extra innings, but if he can keep doing this he could force their hand like Medlen did.

Myrtle Beach 1, Potomac 2

  • C. Harrilchak 1-4 .188 avg
  • Mi. Jones 2-3 RBI, BB, K, .261 Avg
  • M. Crim 7IP 6H. 2R 0BB 3K 4.28 ERA

Matt Crim - the forgotten man in the Myrtle Beach rotation -has been fairly inconsistent in his last 6 games giving up 5, 1, 5, 0, 9, and 2 runs during that span. Tonight his only real blemishes were a couple of solo HR given up in the 6th and 7th innings. Unfortunately the offense had nothing for him. Cory Harrilchak also made his return to the Beach and can make a claim to stay this time around.

Rome 2, Lexington 13

  • R. Hefflinger 2-4 K, .273 Avg
  • RSF 1-3 BB. .278 Avg
  • R. Lopez 1IP 4H 5R 1BB 0K 3.58 ERA

Robinson Lopez did not bring his A-game to the park tonight. He got 2 of the first 3 batters he faced out and then the flood gates opened after he hit a batter, loaded the bases, walked a run in and then gave up a double and a couple more singles to firmly cement a very bad inning. On the bright side RSF returned to full season ball after his wrist/hand surgery sidelined him for a couple months. Don't expect a whole lot of power from him right away as we all know these wrist injuries can take time.

Danville 7, Princeton 3

  • R. Flores 2-5 RBI, 2K
  • E. Gattis 2-4 2 RBI
  • A. Northcraft 5IP 3H 1R 1BB 4K
  • T. Stovall 1IP 1H 0R 0BB 2K

I just realized that the Princeton team plays about an hour and a half from my house and I am pretty upset that I did not know until tonight. Otherwise I would have been there watching the D-Braves kick butt. A big win from tonight however is that fact that Tyler Stovall made an appearance without walking anyone. Also I don't know how I feel about him making a 1 inning relief appearance. I am ready for him to be starting somewhere preferably higher up the ladder.

GCL Braves 5, GCL Blue Jays 2

  • E. Reyes 1-3 K, 2 HBP
  • F. De Los Santos 2-5
  • D. Rohm 2-5 2B, RBI
  • E. Sanchez 1-5 2B, RBI, 2K
  • C. Browsten 2-4 3B, RBI
  • W. Kempf 4IP 3H 0R 1BB 6K

The GCL Braves keep on rolling by pounding out a bunch of hits and getting solid pitching. David Rohm is supposed to have a good bad but just no but no defined position yet and the surprising thing about him is he is just 20 years old. I could envision him pulling off something like Adam Milligan did last year splitting time between Danville and Rome with a good showing.

Crim was outstanding tonight. The homer in the 6th was a bomb shot, I’m pretty sure it was hit of a hanging curve, and the batter immediately after hit a double off the wall, but other than that he kept the hitters off balance. The homer in the 7th really shouldn’t have been a homer, since it hit the wall in foul territory then hit the foul pole, but the ump only heard the pole and called it a homer. It didn’t even go over the fence. Horrible call.

And I was pretty happy when I saw the guys getting off the bus and saw Harrilchak. If you’ll remember, the other day I speculated on the recap that he would be moved up after the break, so not only was it nice to see him get promoted for his sake, but I just like being right about something occasionally.

Great night at the park, can’t wait to go back up Saturday.

Great stuff CB

It looks like your going to miss Teheran this time but you get to see Delgado not bad at all! Harrilchak reminds me so much of Scott Podsednik and I wouldn’t mind having a 4th OF/Spot starter guy like that.

Crim was great though. He was kind of bummed out after the game, especially about the second homer but I just kept telling him how great he did. He has some dynamite breaking stuff.

Yeah, apparently this would have been Teheran’s day to throw, but the AS game screwed that up. And I miss Vizzy tomorrow, but still, looking forward to watching Randall dominate on Saturday. I think Julio and Vizzy must be studying English together because they just keep getting better at it. They know a lot more than they did a month and a half ago when I saw them.

And I got to watch JJ Hoover throw a BP session and it was insane. He was popping the mitt and getting ungodly break on his pitches. Guys were walking by on their way to the dugout and they kept stopping to watch.

Hoover

Would be a nice 4/5th starter in the ML but he’s better suited to me as a backend of the BP guy. In the All-Star game his stuff was just wicked and he was able to let it go running his FB up in the mid 90s range w/ good sink and his curve was just flat out unhittable.

I agree, I’ve always seen him as a bullpen guy. But it’s nice to let him get the innings and learn until he gets up to the Majors.

You were correct, good call on Harrilchak...

and definitely agree with yonda on Stovall. Not sure what to think about him in a pen.

Dude – admit it – you’re mostly right with alarming frequency.

I’m sure we could go back a few years and check out my top 25 prospects and see how alarmingly wrong I was about a lot of guys.

But did you ask Harrilchak what he thought of the promotion?!

Lazy. Journalism.

Reply fail

Lazy blogging.

Shitty iPhone and fat fingers from jamming them so much in basketball over the years.

And yes I talked to him about the promotion! I don’t have any problem talking with the young guys. Shit, I learned all kinds of stuff I can’t even talk about. But yeah, still don’t have Franky Wren’s number.

Lazy lazy lazy. You didn’t keep calling until you got answers. I think your time is up man. Holty_Panthers_Fan has been rotting away in the minors and it’s time for him to replace the lazy journalist once known as cbwilk.

too lazy to tell us about it, however.

I learned all kinds of stuff I can’t even talk about.

Why do I not doubt this one bit?? Pictures. We want pictures. It’s not like you have to sleep or anything….

I feel horrible, because I haven’t done a post about any series I’ve seen all year. I need to get the first one, the G-Braves here in Norfolk back in April, done, then hopefully I’ll get my crap together and do the rest of them.

DSL

I don’t see how those guys can get any kind of rhythm over there with all the rain outs and crazy off days.

Salcedo was 1-4, E(6) today. His errors are starting to pile up, he’s suppose to be stateside next Thurs. can’t wait to see the kid in person hopefully he makes it to Rome so I can see him.

Old man Luna is killing it so far this year, but then that should probably be expected at 28 in a league of mostly teenagers. 18 yr old Dominican 3B Carlos Franco has had a solid last two games—3-6, a double, run, RBI, and 3 walks, but he also had an error on the day. Switch hitting CF Hector Garcia, who turned 18 in the last week, had 3 walks and a steal. He’s a decent year except for a complete lack of extra base hits. The pitchers got rocked.

I am praying for danville because they come to Princeton again

Willie Kempf is too advanced for GCL.

Brandon Beachy is turning into Kris Medlen 2.0

Can’t wait start arguing over whether he should start or relieve! Seriously, I am looking forward to seeing him in Birmingham soon.

I am ready for him to be starting somewhere preferably higher up the ladder.

I agree, he’s a guy they need to be pushing. Maybe he’s just stretching out the arm or something.
