Major League Baseball has just announced the NL Player of the Month award for May. Braves first baseman Troy Glaus won the award thanks to his sizzling month, in which he hit .330 / .408 / .534, with 6 homers and 28 RBIs.
Congratulations to Troy on his well-deserved award. This has to feel good after so many people had counted him out this year. Let this post be a mea culpa thread for all the doubters. Simply post the words "I was wrong about Troy" in the comment thread below, and all will be forgiven.
Braves rookie sensation Jason Heyward was a runner-up for Player of the Month, and arguably had a better month overall, as he hit .337 / .453 / .628 with 4 homers and 19 RBI. He was, however, named the Rookie of the Month for May, which is a pretty good consolation prize. He won that award in April, too, and might just win it every month this year.
Tim Hudson was a runner-up for the Pitcher of the Month award (to the incomparable Ubaldo Jimenez), thanks to his stellar 4-0 record and 1.59 ERA in May.
A round of applause for all these players, please, and for the Braves team as a whole. Hopefully we will have just as many players competing for the June awards.

According to DOB's Twitter
Heyward has already won ROTM:
@ajcbraves Glaus NL player of month. Heyward NL rookie of month. Sweeps all around

Thanks, I'll edit the above.
Jacob Peterson - June 2, 2010
Needs more doubles
Mr. Sanchez - June 2, 2010
They Will Come
His BABIP was rather high for the month of May. I think his singles will drop drastically and most of them will turn to outs and doubles, balancing out his slugging closer to his career numbers.
BenDuronio - June 2, 2010
it was a joke...
although he has surprisingly few of them.
Mr. Sanchez - June 3, 2010
I can think of at least 4 occasions
when he smoked the ball and maybe could have had a double, but stopped because he’s so dang slow and didn’t want to risk it.
Jacob Peterson - June 3, 2010
Yup.
Smoltz's Beard - June 3, 2010
And he's been robbed of another 2-3 as well...
just saying that 4 doubles, as much as he’s been in the lineup, is shockingly low, especially when you consider how well he’s been mashing.
Mr. Sanchez - June 3, 2010
5 after yesterday. He won’t hit 6 HRs every month (as much as I would like him to), eventually some of those will end up being doubles. If he stays healthy I bet he ends up with something like 25/25 2B/HR.
Smoltz's Beard - June 3, 2010
Stay healthy,...
with Heyward and others on in front of him, I wouldn’t be surprised to see 30+. Even I’ll admit, the guy has been making good contact since spring training. It’s just that in the spring and April, not of that good contact was turning into extra bases. With the way he’s been making solid contact all year, and with what appears to be his normal power stroke back in business, I almost expect 30+ HR. The doubles, like said above, depend on him getting a bit quicker out of the box, perhaps pushing a little harder to try for 2, and in some cases, not having a CF make an amazing catch in the gap.
Mr. Sanchez - June 3, 2010
The strikeouts were really alarming in April, but he ended up compiling the same amount (21) in May in 44 more PAs.
Smoltz's Beard - June 3, 2010
I was wrong about Troy!!!!
BRaves1 - June 2, 2010
I was wrong about Troy as well ( we’re not worthy! We’re not worthy!)
Brave Neander - June 2, 2010
Congrats to Galusy & Huddy!
FitzFan - June 2, 2010
was mad at troy but never doubted him
hes playing better than i could have expected
samething for jason and timmy
so this is pretty cool

I was right about Troy
Is that allowed?
justincredubil02 - June 2, 2010 via mobile
You beat me to it.
Me too.
sddbaker - June 2, 2010
Congrats
To you and Troy. So nice to see/hear optimistic fans. Thanks.
Old Braves' Fan - June 2, 2010
I was definitely right about Troy, too
but I don’t say that to gloat. I just want us all to celebrate how awesome the Braves are playing right now. And to encourage others to have reasonable optimism when players slump.
Jacob Peterson - June 2, 2010
McLouth
I can’t wait for the McLouth post when he heats up…he will heat up, right? Nice walk today though…
As far as Troy, it’s hard to say “I was right”, for nobody thought he’d be THIS good…I didn’t think he was as bad as his slump, but I was hoping for average…He’s been a top-flight 1B this year…Good job, Troy
Jman781 - June 3, 2010
Wrong. His .830 OPS and .367 wOBA are right in line with his career average, an average that plenty of us thought he could replicate if he was just given some time.
Smoltz's Beard - June 3, 2010
COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR??
bluelg - June 3, 2010
Looks like a good bet so far.
Smoltz's Beard - June 3, 2010
I’d say he has as legitimate a shot as anyone so far, although I dunno whether you’d consider this a comeback year for Hudson. Both played at the end of last year, if I’m not mistaken, but neither played anywhere near a full season.

cthabeerman - June 3, 2010
His batting average is higher than normal though
;)
Mr. Sanchez - June 3, 2010
NOT ENOUGH DOUBLES!
Smoltz's Beard - June 3, 2010
Kudos
If you honestly believed that Troy Glaus was going to be the league leader in RBIs (or one of the league leaders), especially after the horrid start he had…Right now he is projected to finish with 30 HRs and 126 RBIs (once again INCLUDING his horrid start)…If you honestly felt he would produce at that kind of level, you are more optimistic and knowledgeable than most people, including all 30 MLB teams…Why else would he sign with Atlanta for under 2 million to play 1B if it was so obvious that he would be an MVP candidate…Regardless, Troy has been amazing, and at least I am impressed.
Jman781 - June 4, 2010
They weren’t scared of his production, they were scared of his health.
Atlanta jumped on him, and he, apparently, wanted to play here. Call it the Bobby Cox effect.
If you thought Troy would hit less than 20 HRs, you would be crazy.
The only thing that should be surprising us right now is his high batting average, which will probably come down quite a bit. He is a career .250-ish hitter.
His power is amazing, and his eye at the plate is really good too. He is an OBP machine with power. That is what we expected him to be, and that is what he has shown he is.
There’s no need to try to mock people who can actually use logic and reason to make a projection.
justincredubil02 - June 4, 2010
Mock?
I am not mocking anyone…I am honestly impressed with those individuals who actually thought that Glaus would be great and not just good…
I was expecting a 20 HR/80 RBI type season…He’s well above that projection. I read through most of the Troy Glaus posts and you are in the minority of individuals who thought that Glaus would be not only good, but great. Once again, health be damned, if he was going to produce like this, more teams would’ve been interested…
My original comment was merely trying to say that I am impressed with how Glaus is playing, not to spark debate about other people’s baseball acumen. Then someone flat out tells me I am quote:
Especially, when my comment was not meant to be taken literally. Yes, I am sure someone on the planet thought that Glaus would hit for .280 have, 30+ HRs and hit for 120+ RBIs…You are two of those people…I am merely making the point that it wasn’t so obvious that Glaus would be hitting at this level, especially since he hasn’t since maybe 2006…Heck, he’s NEVER hit more than 111 RBIs…Ever…
So yes, his CURRENT pace (once again, which includes his slow start), is beyond what I expected…I do expect him to level off, but as of right now…This was improbable, in my eyes…
Jman781 - June 5, 2010
Yes. That’s what I was gonna say.
cbwilk - June 2, 2010
this.
Smoltz's Beard - June 2, 2010

Yep.
I was too…and it got me in quite a few arguments with my roommate, who was a huge Glaus hater.
hailtogeorgia - June 3, 2010
Way to go!
To Troy, possibly Jason, and the entire Braves team.
So glad seeing them gel, come together, and perform as a complete team. No wonder they have the best record in the NL since May 1st.
Old Braves' Fan - June 2, 2010
sometimes the wrong move works out
I still think I was right that Glaus was a risky move considering how little he had played last year and that he wasn’t an actual first basemen, but I’m quite glad he’s hitting like he is now. I wonder if he’d be open to a 1-2 year extension. The Braves should still have a need for him at one of the corner infield spots next year.
redwards95 - June 2, 2010
Given the low cost of that deal
and the insurance of also signing Hinske, I don’t see how you could call the Glaus signing “the wrong move”. It was low-risk, high-reward. That’s the best kind of move to make.
Jacob Peterson - June 2, 2010
This
buzzdeadwax - June 2, 2010
I was wrong about Troy...kind of...
I really wanted to see Hinske get a chance since he was coming off the bench raking. I thought 1B was the obvious slot for him. Turns out there is a reason Bobby has been skipper for 25 years. He knows what he is doing. Congratulations Troy, Jason, and Tim. Let’s do it again in June or as Joe says May 32nd, 33rd, and so on.
Brave Rebel - June 2, 2010
this makes perfect sense
he deserved it

braves trade for a starting pitcher
I ’d like To See The Braves Try To get Lee from seattle And put him in the rotation,Man the team would have a great rotation?
jayball - June 2, 2010
.....what
DogDaysofSummer - June 2, 2010
Someone clearly had no idea what this past off season was all about and what we'd have to give up for lee
bravesfan203 - June 2, 2010
AND then...
we trade Heyward, Teheran, Delgado, and Jurrjens for Mark Reynolds and a PTBNL.
LOlz, totallyz agree with you.
Tim Goad - June 3, 2010
This is a great idea.
Now if we could only figure out a way to improve our second baseman and right fielder, we could probably take first place in the division over the Phillies.

I do not think i said, “Troy sucks!” but I have been wondering where his power was during most of this season. I am glad he is proving most of us wrong and killing baseball. Being proved wrong with positive results is always a good feeling. Like Lowe today.

Even better
is to be proved right with positive results. :)

plus
i was afraid that was the beginning of the end, awesome month!
otisnixon'sparty - June 3, 2010
I wont deny I wanted to see more of Hinske
I still think he should see the field more than Nate somehow. But Glaus is performing much better than he did in April and has been a big reason for our turn around.
Tim Goad - June 3, 2010
In a perfect world where defense didn’t matter it’d be great for more Hinske and less Nate, but the fact remains we almost NEED Nate in there to cover up for the lack of range in left.
bpk228480 - June 3, 2010
Which is why Blanco is up here if McSlumpy continues his horrific suckitude.

This Troy fella is pretty good. He should hit cleanup.
10-4 - June 3, 2010
I was wrong about Troy.
Hopefully I will be saying the same thing about McLouth after June.
gramsey712 - June 3, 2010
I was hopeful about Troy - but I'll admit to feeling skeptical in April.
He changed all that and more in May.
Tickled me to death he finally got his timing and swing in gear and proved to all the doubters that he will be a contributor to our team this year, in a BIG way.
Well deserved recognition by MLB.
NCChopper - June 3, 2010
So if they halfway keep this up...
Who wins Comeback Player of the Year, Glaus or Hudson?
DogDaysofSummer - June 3, 2010
Glaudson?
Smoltz's Beard - June 3, 2010
I'd have to go with Glaus
if only because he did less last year than Huddy. I don’t think anyone doubted Huddy could be an effective pitcher in 2010, but there were lots of doubters about Troy coming back to be an effective player.
Jacob Peterson - June 3, 2010
I knew Troy would rebound, but not this well
Keep it up big guy! I agree on the extension. Freddie isn’t ready & now is hurt.
Also, thank you Ken Griffey Jr for all the memories….just wish he could have been a Brave!
