SWEEP! Lowe And Infante Lead Braves Past Phillies, 2-1

For all the crap we've given him about being overpaid and only getting DerekLoweWins, Derek Lowe has always had the ability to put it all together and dominate. He's been an excellent pitcher for much of his career, and has even thrown a no-hitter. In other words, there's a reason Frank Wren gave him all that money.

Today, Lowe took another baby step toward justifying that contract. In 8 masterful innings, he limited the Phillies to only 1 run, struck out 7, and gave up only 1 (intentional) walk. He faced the minimum in all but 2 of his innings, induced 2 double plays, and had barely any hard-hit balls against him (5 of the 6 hits were grounders or bunts).

The lone Phillies run scored in the third. With one out, the Phillies got 4 straight singles to drive in a run and load the bases. This was almost entirely just bad luck for Lowe, though, as the first 3 were seeing-eye grounders and the 4th was a bunt. Lowe got out of the mess by getting Chase Utley to bounce into a double play. The only other Phillies threat was in the 8th, when Lowe got Wilson Valdez to pop up to center with 2 men on. Lowe's final line: 8 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 IBB, 7 K, 11/19 ground balls (58%), and a staggering 0.397 WPA.

The Braves scored first, but in anticlimactic fashion, when Chipper Jones hit into a double play to score Martin Prado. After that, Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick kept the Braves off balance, using the fact that the ball was not carrying to his advantage. The Braves hit 11 fly balls off of Kendrick, but none left the park. (One did come close, though... Troy Glaus hit a ball to lead off the second that looked like it was gone, but left fielder Raul Ibanez got enough glove on it to bring it inside the park for a double.) Kendrick's final line: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K, and a 0.297 WPA.

In the bottom of the 8th, Charlie Manuel brought in Jose ContrerasNate McLouth led off the inning with a walk, and Melky Cabrera followed with a nice sacrifice to get Nate in scoring position. Contreras struck out Martin Prado and then intentionally walked Jason Heyward to pitch to Omar Infante.

Big mistake. Omar got behind 0-2 but worked the count full and slapped a ball just over Chase Utley's head to score the go-ahead run. It was a fantastic at-bat, and worthy of the man he was filling in for. (Chipper Jones left the game with an inflamed finger... he's day-to-day.) Billy Wagner finished off the sweep with a hitless ninth, striking out pinch-hitter Shane Victorino with a series of nasty pitches for the last out.

The Braves have now won 8 straight and are 2.5 games up in the division. Since May 17th, the Braves are 13-2 and the Phillies are 4-11. That's right: we've picked up 9 games in the standings out of 15 games played. That'll do!

An awesome stat and the Awards section after the jump...

Knew we could. Glad we did.

Now, let’s keep it going in Los Angeles!

(penciled in)

Win 8 straight.

Go Infante!!

I said the Braves should sweep

in the last Pirates game recap, and was told to temper my expectations by everyone who replied.

SHUN THE NON-BELIEVERS

Great win today! Lets carry this momentum into LA and go for 10 in a row!

To be a complete downer...

You should be happy if the Braves go about .500 on this road trip. You can hope for more, but it’ll be tough. On the road against a hot LA team facing 4 good starters (Kuroda, Kershaw, Billingsley, and probably Ely), 4 games in Chase Field which makes me a little nervous since Hanson, Crabs M., and KK (they all should pitch in this series) give up their fair share of fly balls, and then 3 games in Minnesota. That’s no cakewalk.

I'm going to be happy...

with 6-4, okay with 5-5.

I guess you will ignore the 11th game then.

That’s a bye.

oops...

Okay, yeah, bad math. I should have said very happy with 7-4, happy with 6-5.

6-5 is doable

Say we split with LA, win 3/4 in AZ, and lost 2/3 to MIN. Or some similar scenario. It won’t be easy, but it’s very possible the way this team is playing.

I wouldn’t be too upset with 5-6, though, just so long as no one in the division is going 10-1 in that stretch.

I think will go 6-5

But even if we go .500, we’re doing good.

If we go .500

in 11 games, it means there is a rainout or something.

Which would be difficult...

…because the Dodgers have a rainout once every 20 years or so, and the D-Backs have a dome, meaning Minnesota (amazing to say it after all their years in the Metrodome) is the only hope.

Don’t be quite so high on the Twins. If my estimation is correct, it will be Huddy-Lowe-Medlen for that series. From top to bottom the pitching advantage is ours. The Twins also are not hitting for power at Bullseye Field. If our pitchers can get the job done, that should be sweep.

Anything less than 2 wins in Minneapolis would be a disappointment.

Although the dodgers series is becoming more winnable as each second passes.

Another extra innings in LA and the dodgers have pretty blown out their entire bullpen.

LOL this shit is pretty pathetic
This game seriously has the potential to go like 15 innings.

Both offenses have looked pathetic, although the Dodgers were resting starters and just brought them in last inning.

12th inning time!
Garret Anderson might come in to pitch.

Lol.

Apparently the dodgers can't hit a slider to save their lives.

I am seriously laughing my ass off.

Talk about a fast regression, too. Andre Ethier was hitting .392 when he went on the DL. He’s already down to .365.

13th Inning Coming Up!
This ump is terrible hahahaha
KELLY JOHNSON > MARTIN PRADO
I think this ump is just making this shit up as he goes along.
Caroll almost mercifully ended this farce.

Line drive barely foul with 2 on. Then he K’d. 14th INNING WOOHOOOOO

I feel justified in posting this because every inning this drags on, regardless of the outcome, helps the Braves.

Tim Tschida is awful

He seemingly has little idea where the strike zone is.

The decision to pinch run for Adam LaRoche in the tenth

Has far reaching consequences, as Augie Ojeda gets a couple of PAs and strands three runners.

LOL VIN SCULLY

“We are headed to the 15th….unless Garret Anderson can do something.”

Professional hitter warning.
And there's your professional hitter!
OH FUCK YOU GARRET ANDERSON

NOW I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE

This strike zone is fantastic.

You guys should seriously watch this if you can.

I'm watching on GameDAy

What’s up with that strike 2. Both low AND Outside, and still a strike. No wonder it’s scoreless in the 12th.

Augie Ojeda is not a big man

It’s debatable whether he could even have reached that strike 2.

Let's just say the strike zone Glavine-ian.
Rusty Ryal is a sweet name.
I prefer Travis Schlichting
When you say it, it's like you have peanut butter in your mouth.
ETHIER 4 TRIPEL CROWN
Speaking about Triple crowns

Here’s Garret Anderson!

And he demonstrates why he doesn't deserve a job.

Ala Raul Mondesi.

To be fair....

Everyone else on the Dodgers are popping up within 2 feet of someone on the defense. This game ’s unwatchableness is precisely why I find this so watchable.

Travis Schlictingsteinerman

out there for a third inning, woohoo.

This game is on MLB Network btw.

Vin Scully announcing.

That ball one was funny

Compared to the strike 2 call in the top of the inning.

Depending how the D-Backs handle their rotation with the off-day

We might miss Dan Haren. That would be a welcome bit of luck.

I dunno...

We killed him in Atlanta and he really hasn’t been great this year. I’d be fine with seeing him again.

He's been unlucky this year

The 3.24 xFIP is below his career average, and right in line with what he’s done since he arrived in Arizona and been a top-flight starter. The K-rate is awesome, the BABIP is just extremely high.

Yeah, his K-rate is great, no doubt. As is his walk rate.

He’s obviously better than his ERA b/c of the BABIP issues, but his FIP is still 4.21 and his tERA is 4.43. I don’t think he’s the same as he was the last 2 years, physically. His FB velocity is down 1 mph from last year and 2 mph from 2008. His cutter’s velo is WASY down, too. Given that, it’s easy to see why he might be more hittable.

Not saying he’s not still good, but I’m not afraid of him after the pounding we put on him at the Ted. Especially now that we’ll be playing at Chase Field.

Anything less than the best is a felony.

No off day until the 14th

good for us, bad for them.

Far fetched.....

Derek Lowe to the All-star Game?

in 1990, maybe.

He’d probably make it with 12 wins and a 4+ ERA.

This year, though, with all the great years from starters, I don’t see how he’d deserve it unless he gives up no more runs in June or something insane like that.

Jason Marquis circa 2009

disagrees.

I've never understood..

all the Lowe hate.

Because he was very expensive & not really good
Because he's the highest paid member of the staff by far

And the fourth best pitcher at best. It’s not just the $15 million per, it’s the 4 years, which means he’s almost guaranteed a spot on the staff in 2012 unless we trade him, regardless of how much guys like Teheran, Delgado, Medlen, and Minor might deserve to be in that rotation.

Let's worry about that...

in 2012.

It's completely relevant

If his name were, say, Kyle Davies and he was giving us a 4.50 FIP while making 400K, I wouldn’t mind one bit. He’s the highest paid man on the roster and not significantly better than KK or Medlen.

I don't disagree...

that it has relevance. It’s just that a lot can happen in a year and a half, and I don’t think you should hate a player because of one of the many possibilities, that’s all.

If he continues to pitch like he has the past five starts, I could definitely see him finishing out his contract.

I've enjoyed all the wins...

by large margins, but it’s very nice to win a nice pitcher’s duel.

i hate dueling Kyle Kendrick

this

next time, we should stack a lineup with righties against kendrick. today’s splits:

righties: 5 for 12
lefties (incl switch ie chipper): 1 for 13

That's a nice idea

except this game ran counter to all of his career splits:

vs LH: 6.03 FIP, 5.62 xFIP
vs RH: 4.28 FIP, 4.15 xFIP

I think Kyle just pitches well against the braves

Saw a stat (didn’t verify) that he’s never given up more than 3 ER in any of his 8-ish starts against the Braves.

Good to see the new boss is same as the old boss — Conteras comes in to f-up solid work by Kendrick.

you know

i think i’ll be sad if we actually traded derek lowe this year before the deadline

I wouldn’t go that far…

I've Always Like Lowe

Even more now he’s a Brave of course. I don’t get all the hate for him either. At the end of the day it was Frank Wren and the Braves FO who made the offer through negotiation and set aside the monetary resources to sign Lowe. You can’t dislike him for being rewarded for his past success – We signed Lowe when we were in desperate and i mean desperate need for pitching. Lowe wasn’t desperate – we were and over-paid $5-$8 million for the guy. So while all the Glaus haters are apologizing on other threads here on TC….I just can’t help but smile as Lowe puts in one of the best starts of the years by a Braves pitcher in one of the biggest games of the year to date and now has 4 or 5 QS in a row!

Really, Negative Nancy? You’re going to come here talking shit about people being down on someone?

Hypocrite much?

The Only Negative Comments I Make

Are in regards to Kenshin Kawakami – That’s it…That’s all! And he was part of those desperation contracts Frank Wren offered almost two years ago while searching for pitching.

Did the Phillies ever lead during this series? When is the last time that happened?

no they didn't

but they also didn’t lead during the mets series

Hard to lead when you score 0 runs
Happens more than you'd think

Remember when we won all those titles, and we got to count down to the magic number at the end of the season? I miss that.

Magic Number is 108!

Thanks! Gondeee should start a counter.

That's tempting fate.
Yes it is

You shouldn’t look at that until it gets into the 30s or so. Assuming it does.

YEEES!!

I knew the Braves could do it!!!, couldn’t watch the game unfortunately but I wished that the Braves would won!! yeahh!!

Where is everyone getting these llamasaurus animated gifs? There’s no google hits for llamasaurus.

look towards the top of the game thread from last night (6/1)

link is in there somewhere near the picture of hamels being lasereyed by a llamasaurus

So people are just animating these themselves?

I weep for 10-4.
They (and the other .gifs) used to be just at the end of OTs – now they’re throughout.
Poor guy may get to where he’ll never be able to open the threads.

your concern is noted, and appreciated. It got pretty crazy yesterday with all the llamasaurus’s’s’s, luckily i was on my work computer.

Hee-hee...

Not only was the sweep of the Phils full of win, but go check out their game thread: 352 total comments, they dread Heyward while giving him is props, then at the end all should be put on suicide watch. Is it too cruel to bask in their aggregrate sorrow? LOL

This is my BROOMSTICK!

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP

Loved the sweep!

Now on to watching me some G Braves @ 7:00 on CSS!

Infante is just incredible.

Go, Braves, Go!
