Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/1

Cole Miles defines "scrappy".

Cole Miles defines "scrappy".

Gwinnett 4, Indianapolis 3

  • J. Thurston 3-3, RBI, BB, .234 AVG
  • B. Canizares 1-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, .293 AVG
  • A. Romero 1-3, HR (1), RBI, BB, .SB (1), 200 AVG
  • C. Resop 4 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 2.03 ERA
  • C. Kimbrel 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K, SV (7), 1.29 ERA
  • The G-Braves held on to win the completion of yesterday's suspended game. Resop's outing was short because of the suspension, but Mariano Gomez picked up the win and Craig Kimbrel finished things off with 2 perfect innings, securing his 7th save of the season.

    Gwinnett 0, Indianapolis 6

  • A. Romero 2-3, .278 AVG
  • J. Reyes 3 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 4.97 ERA
  • M. Dunn 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 0.75 ERA
  • Gwinnett splits the double header, falling in the second game. Jo Jo Reyes picks up the loss, only because they didn't score any runs for him. Mike Dunn continues to dominate out of the pen; for the year his WHIP is 1.04 and he's striking out 11.6 per 9 innings. Alex Romero provided a good example tonight of why you can't trust small sample sizes, raising his average 111 points in 2 games.

    Mississippi 5, Montgomery 2

    M. Gomez 1-3, 3B, RBI, BB, .246 AVG
  • D. Linares 2-4, 2B, 3B, RBI, .255 AVG
  • O. Mercado 2-4, RBI, SB (2), .281 AVG
  • R. Gress 2-4. RBI, E (6), .333 AVG
  • E. Cordier 6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 4 BB, 6 K, W (4), 3.59 ERA
  • Erik Cordier had his best start of the year, even though he still walked too many. Brandon Beachy was finally touched up a little, allowing 2 runs in 2 innings, rasing his ERA to a still impressive 1.44. The M-Braves hit 2 triples tonight, both by relatively slow guys, Mauro Gomez and Donnel Linares.

    Myrtle Beach 5, Frederick 1

  • C. Miles 2-5, RBI, 2 SB (16, 17), .270 AVG
  • D. Nelson 2-5, HR (5), RBI, .250 AVG
  • S. Sime 3-5, 2B, .298 AVG
  • L. Sumoza 2-4, .188 AVG
  • M. Crim 7.2 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 K, W (3), 3.94 ERA
  • B. Pruneda 1.1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K, SV (4), 2.93 ERA
  • Cole Miles has been impressive in his return to the Carolina League. In his last 9 games he's hitting .355 and has stolen 7 bases. Still, he's proven that he's defensively limited to left field, has pretty much no extra base pop, with his OPB, .363, outshining his slugging, .358, and even though he's had success at swiping bases, he gets caught too much to make it worthwhile, with only a 71% success rate. Matt Crim picks up his first win as a starter and Benino Pruneda continues his good work as the team's closer. Also, it's worth noting that JJ Hoover was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week.

    Rome 6, Augusta 7

  • M. Jones 2-5, E (18), .249 AVG
  • R. Hefflinger 1-4, 2B, RBI, BB, .277 AVG
  • J. Kreke 2-4, BB, SB (5), E (9), .250 AVG
  • J. Whitmer 2-3, 2B, HR (1), 2 RBI, .341 AVG
  • C. Curley 2-4, 3B, .267 AVG
  • R. Lopez 6 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 3 BB, 4 K, 3.09 ERA
  • I'd been so focused on Myke Jones' good work with the bat that I hadn't noticed that he'd racked up 18 errors in the field this year. Of course, plenty of good players have made a ton of errors playing shortstop in the Sally League. Robby Hefflinger added another double, his 12th in 31 games. Robinson Lopez hit a bit of a speed bump tonight, walking a few, giving up a lot of his, and generally not dominating like he has in some other starts. It's almost like he's only 19 or something.

Shouldn't Dunn be in AAA by now?

    Gwinnett is AAA.

    lol

i was about to post something about that.

its just im so used to the second set of stats being AA

DUH! Brain fart on my part, sorry

I think he should be in Atlanta. There just doesn’t seem to be any room for him right now.

    Christhian Martinez.
    I completely forgot about him

but at least Dunn is getting work in. Better that than him not pitching in Atlanta like Kimbrel was.

No mention of our top prospect getting an MRI?

    which one

    freeman?

    yeah,....

    apparently tweaked his knee.

I also hadn’t seen Alex Romero got the call to AAA.

Hopefully the MRI comes back negative and he just strained it and a week to two weeks resting it will get him back to 100%.

IF, IF, IF…Freeman hurt his knee or needed another year at AAA (he’s just 20 y.o.) can the Braves afford Glaus for another year? He’s looking like he’ll get a bunch of his incentive bonus $, 2010 pay might end up around $3.5M. I wonder if Glaus would even consider another 1 year deal, kinda doubt it.

I had such high hopes for Luis Sumoza

I would like to see Chris Curley show some more power. We really need a legit 3rd base prospect.

Salcedo could do it. Especially if he really develops into the big, strong guy that he could be.

    Keep sleeping on Linares....

he ain’t Chipper, but I think he’s at least decent.

Good to see Thurston and Kimbrel doin good work!

Would is be possible to include the teams record next to the scores?

Or is that a monster pain in the ass?

Sorry, it really is a monster pain in the ass. We’ve been giving them in the weekly Hot Sheets, both the weekly record and the overall record.

The schedule says all the DSL games start at ...

10:30 eastern in the a.m. Odd that they can’t get box scores up any quicker than they do.

It is basically a third world country…

yeah this has always been part of the problem with posting the scores to those games, though this year they have been a lot better. The MiLB coverage has improved dramatically in the last couple of seaosns.

I read the other day that milb.com’s first year was 2005. I was shocked but I do remember that it didn’t used to exist, and even when it did come out it was terrible. The rosters were always a week or 2 old and you could never find scores. They’ve come amazingly far.

    btw....

Rome got ripped in the final play of the game with a VERY questionable bad call at the plate over the winning run. :-( It was pretty ugly.

oops, make that the tying run…..still so mad I can’t even type straight.

Was his lat name Joyce perhaps?
