With the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 9th, Royals manager Ned Yost opted to bring in Robinson Tejeda instead of his dominant closer, Joakim Soria. While many managers would do likewise--lord knows how many times I've seen Bobby eschew his closer in a tie game on the road--it was undeniably a stupid call. "Saving your closer for the save situation" usually results in a team losing without even using its best pitcher. Such was the case tonight.
It sure didn't take long for the Braves to capitalize on Yost's blunder. Troy Glaus, the first batter of the inning, launched a home run down the left field line, winning the game for Atlanta. Glaus' clutch homer set off a remarkably mild version of the "surround the guy at home plate" walkoff celebration. It seems that the Braves have learned the lesson of Kendry Morales: don't break your star first baseman's leg after he hits a walkoff homer. Seems like a wise choice.
Kris Medlen pitched very well for the first 6 innings, but struggled in the 7th. Starting the inning with a 4-2 lead, Meds gave up a leadoff single to Mike Aviles, followed by a double to Yuniesky Betancourt (of all people). That left runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Medlen was able to retire Zack Greinke, but was pulled in favor of Eric O'Flaherty. Medlen's final line: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R (3 ER), 2 BB, 5 K, and a -0.007 WPA.
EOF had a bit of a tough outing. He got the first batter, Scott Podsednik, to ground out, but a run scored to make it 4-3. That brought up helium-hitting Jason Kendall, who singled in the tying run. Both the runs were charged to Medlen.
Peter Moylan had to come on to get the last out of the inning. Jonny Venters pitched a scoreless 8th, and Billy Wagner worked a scoreless 9th to pick up the win.
Royals starter Zack Greinke was not dominant, but he was pretty good. He gave up 2 runs in the first, but those were aided by a passed ball and an error. The only ball that was really smoked was Brian McCann's homer leading off the 4th.
After the Royals had closed to within 3-2, Greinke was victimized by the awesomeness of Jason Heyward. J-Hey, who had led off with a single and moved to second on a Chipper Jones single, pulled off a Carl Crawford-like play to steal a run. Troy Glaus hit a ball up the middle that Yuniesky Betancourt made a great diving play on. After Betancourt threw to second to force Chipper, Heyward sprinted around third and slid easily into home. He never stopped running, and when the Royals didn't realize what he was doing right away, he was home free. Don't you just love it when a guy scores from second on an infield out? I sure do.
Though the Braves did not hold that lead, they did score 4 runs off of Greinke, which has to be considered a success. Greinke's final line was 7 IP, 6 H, 4 R (3 ER), 1 HR, 0 BB, 5 K, and a -0.121 WPA.
Nothing like a walkoff homer to seal another series win (that makes 13 straight series without a loss). The Braves have now won 13 of their last 14 at home, too.

Obviuosly knowing what we know about the Brvaes we think the guy who wrote that is crazy. But just looking at the stats, it seems kind of weird that the Braves are winning a lot when Chipper, Bmac, Escobar, Diaz, and Mclouth are all underpreforming and Heyward is in a little slump, plus our starting pitching isnt quite as good as it was last year (though its still pretty damn good.) What the stats dont show is the abilty we have for about 4 or 5 guys who can play all kinds of positions, the clutchness of Brooks Conrad, and the amount ML ready players we have in AAA (espicially pitchers.) The reason this guy doesnt know this is because the Braves, outside of this series, are of no real concern to the Royals. But ofans of other teams in the NL East should be very concerned, because if even one of the above players mentioned starts playing to their potential, then the Bravos have a great shot at clinching the division.

I wouldn’t say Diaz is underperforming. He wasn’t good in April/May but then again no one was good in April and he got the thumb thing in may which bothered him. He did deliver a game winning RBI vs. the “Natinals” in extras. I can’t wait for Matt to come back

There’s quite a few things going on. It’s really easy to point at Chipper’s batting average, but his OBP is still a ridiculous .380, so he’s getting on base a ton right in front of Glaus and McCann. It’s certainly helped Glaus to get his RBIs. In addition, Hinske has absolutely been raking this year. Now that we’re putting him in the line-up every day, we’re looking much better.
Even though McCann hasn’t been what we’ve hoped to date, he’s still a much better bat than most teams can hope to get out of their catchers. Certainly more than Royals would ever get from Kendall. Toss in the fact that Heyward is a great hitter, Prado is the league leader in batting average, and the solid contributions we’ve gotten from the bench, and it’s a good offense.
It’s weird for a Royals fan to say that, since they score less than we do, and we don’t have the benefit of a DH for most of our games.

Comparing the lineups last night, the Braves had one guy (Melky) with an OBP lower than .350. Most are .370 or better. The Royals have two guys above .350 (Dejesus and Butler) and have some truly abysmal guys sprinkled. Hell, their top two hitters are sporting .330 and .326 OBPs, meaning their two best hitters are not getting nearly enough opportunities to drive anyone in. From 1-6, the Braves are getting on base nearly 40% of the time, which is crazy.

I grew up there and never really figured it out.
Rams football was incredible in the late 90’s, but Chiefs fans still outnumbered them by a ton. To this day the Chiefs still rule.
They love their Blues hockey, but it’s a bit odd considering the population. St. Louis and the surrounding areas are predominately African-American or lower-income farmers, neither of which are generally big on hockey. Though they still draw big numbers and you can’t smell a ticket if they’re playing well.
They don’t know what basketball is.
And i’m guessing it’s about 15/1 on Cardinals to Royals fans. Maybe even more than that.

I don’t think people understand how ridiculous this team really is. First off, we had probably the worst April I can recall in decades. We had a nine game losing streak. Lost our most productive pitcher from last year for the last month (Jair Jurrjens). Glaus was considered a terrible sign because of lack of power during April. Then out of nowhere, Bobby decided to move Hinske into LF and have Prado leadoff followed by the rookie Heyward. After that, nobody could touch the Braves. Then we lose our setup man Saito for an extended period of time. No problem. We just replaced him with Johnny “The Vulture” Venters. I can go on (best small ball I have seen in forever), and on (best record at home 23-7), and on (current 4 game winning streak), and on (13 consecutive series wins/tie in a row), and on (best record in the league). But that would be too much to read. Let’s Go Braves!

The st. louis cardinals had a 9 game losing streak when they won the WS. There was another one talking about how the team in the lead after 3 weeks (or at some point, I can’t really remember taht well) rarely ever wins the division.
Vazquez was our most productive pitcher. Jurrjens was great but Vazquez was top 5 in the league. But we did lose Vazquez too.
Prado is awesome. I wish Heyward would stop striking out so much, but I guess at least he has his great streaks and then his bad streaks.

Against the Royals, for one. Sure it was Greinke, but he’s not as well-known as some other elite pitchers to justify that.
All I can figure is that being in first place has its benefits. We’re up 16% over last year (prior to this game) so that bears very well on offseason spending for us, if we need it.

Kind of an unfair assessment
If they’d been doing that for 15 years, they’d actually have some prospects. Their problem is that, until the last three years, they weren’t trading for prospects, weren’t drafting well, and were actually giving prospects away for marginal talent.
When they traded Jason Bay, he only had a year and a half on his contract left. They traded Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez when they had only months left on their deals, and got some prospects for them. They got something out of Nate Mclouth very quickly.

That they’re having to go to extremes just to get marginal talent on their teams. Now, at least, they have good positional prospects. McCutchen in CF, Alvarez at 3B, Tabata is a decent corner, and Tony Sanchez is raking in the minors. I’d say that they’d be looking good in about 2-3 years if there was some more pitching talent somewhere in the system.

They do have some pitching talent. Just not enough to help out soon or cover up for when the others may faulter. Lincoln is pretty good, hopefully he gets it together. I just feel for that franchise.

They’ve been waiting forever on Lincoln, and who knows if he’ll ever live up to the promise he had before he got hurt? And what do they have beyond him? They traded for Alderson…last year was it? Or the year before-regardless, he’s fairly marginal, might be a #3 some day. Beyond that, very little that I can name.
But hey, at least Charlie Morton is better than his numbers!

Hey folks
Just got back in ATL today and went to the game tonight. What a great ending from the Glausosaur. The crowd was just amazing and loud all game long. I can’t remember the crowd being like that for a Saturday night game since the 2005 playoff series in 2005. I also can’t remember the last time I’ve been this excited and confident about a Braves team. I seriously love this team.

Another fun fact:
I beleive that was something like the 41st game in a row the Braves won when scoring 5 or more runs, dating back to last season. As soon as Troy connected in the top of the 9th I was thinking, “That’s the magic number 5!”
The big mystery is with KK starting on Sunday afternoon, what will the Braves offense do? I sort of joked about it the other day HERE. Yes, in all the losses in KK’s (undeserved) record the most runs the Braves scored was 4. The offense has scored 5 runs twice and 6 runs once, but after KK was the pitcher of record. Unbelievable…

Pac would you mind expanding on why you think it was such a bad idea to not use Soria. It was th start of an inning…if you use him here you can’t use him when there’s one out and 2 guys ona nd you need outs and its a much higher leverage situation. I think using Tejada was the right decision I hate it when managers put in the closer in the 9th, bc they always pitch the ninth and god forbid they pitch in another high leverage situation.
First off outside of Tejada’s horrid April start, he has pitched really really well. he is striking out guys at a high rate and doing a good job of limiting HR…which are key to being a RP. Of course he walks too many guys…but he is working around that with the Ks. He’s not a great pitcher, but he is good enough and using Soria there would have wasted him.
Maybe I’m off base here. and I’m certainly not arguing Tejada is better than Soria…but i dont think it was a bad decision. If it was the Braves I’d rather keep Wagner in the pen until he is really needed in a close game like this.
