Tim Hudson lead the Braves on the mound and at the plate as they took the rubber game 3-1 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Tim Hudson threw 7 masterful innings and also scored the go-ahead run as the Braves avoided losing a series for the 12th consecutive time. The Braves have now successfully tied or won every series since May 7-9, going 26-10 over that span (.722 winning percentage). Hudson allowed 8 base runners and struck out 5 but allowed just 1 run to score. He forced the Rays to hit weak grounders constantly throughout his 7 innings of work and got out of a jam very smoothly in the bottom half of his final inning. With men on first and second with 2 outs, he forced Willy Aybar to ground out to Martin Prado to end the inning and his outing. Hudson handed it over to Jonny Venters and Billy Wagner, who successfully finished the game and allowed just 1 base runner between them while striking out 2. It was Wagner's 12th save of the season, putting him just 4 away from 400 career saves.
The story of the rubber game between the top team in the AL and the top team in the NL was pitching. James Shields was very impressive as well, allowing 6 base runners, striking out 3, and allowing 3 runs over 6 innings. But as good as Shields was, Hudson was just that much better.
In the 3rd inning, Carl Crawford used his incredible speed to score the Rays first run. He walked and stole 2nd, then was running on a Carlos Pena grounder and scored on an infield single. Prado fielded the grounder to his right and almost made an amazing play to get Pena out and strand the runner, but the throw was just a bit too difficult to make in time. Crawford looked to be on his way to having a similar inning as he walked and attempted to steal 2nd in the top of the 6th but was caught by a very good throw from McCann.

Jason Heyward tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the 4th with his 11th home run of the season . At the time, it was just the Braves second hit.
Locked in a duel with Shields through five innings, Hudson got the Braves offense started with a leadoff single in the bottom of the 6th. Martin Prado then pulled a ball past the shortstop to make it 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Brooks Conrad moved them over with a sacrifice bunt, putting men on 2nd and 3rd for Jason Heyward. Shields threw a nasty changeup to strike Heyward out and subsequently intentionality walked Brian McCann. With the bases loaded and 2 men out, Troy Glaus came up and lofted a ball just out of the reach of the right fielder Ben Zobrist for a double, plating Hudson and Prado and putting the Braves ahead for good.
Altogether there were just 9 hits combined throughout the game. Fortunately for the Braves, 3 of their 5 came in the 6th inning.
Up next is a 3 game set vs. the Kansas City Royals. The series starts tomorrow at 7:35pm EST with Brian Bannister (6-4, 5.40 ERA) opposing Derek Lowe (8-5, 4.81 ERA).

Don Sutton loves the Glausasaur whoever it was that went there with the sign.
DogDaysofSummer - June 17, 2010
It was UltimaParadox…and yeah Don was talking about it on the radio!

i had thought about doing it for the next game i went to, but glad he did it. Thats awesome.

UltimaParadox will be happy I’m sure he made the broadcast, even if it was radio.
Knowing he was going to be there, I looked for him and the sign all night, but never saw it.
Anyone else?

I looked also
but did not see him or the sign. I thought a camera man would have picked it up. I may have just missed it.

Wow, that almost wins the stupidest comment of the day award. I’d piss all over that with stats and logic, but considering that comment made a grand total of 40 for you on TC, I don’t think its worth my time. It’ll probably be August before you come back anyway.

a hooter's baby - June 18, 2010
i know he wasnt bad his whole stint with us
but if you ever even watched a single braves game last year, youd know why we got rid of KJ. Also, last time i checked, his almost 2:1 K:BB ratio throughout his stint with us also kind of sucks
CoxXx - June 18, 2010
So I guess we should get rid of Troy Glaus for striking out too much.
Bronn - June 18, 2010
if he starts hitting .220
then yeah, we probably should, but thats not the only reason KJ is gone, the main reason? MARTEEEEEEEN!!!!!!
CoxXx - June 18, 2010
Could have stuck KJ back in LF, so not really
the answer could only be they didn’t think he’d be worth what he’d get in arb.
Mr. Sanchez - June 18, 2010
oh yeah?
stick a guy whos had tommy john surgery in the outfield? why do you think he moved to 2B after his surgery? and yes, you’re right, having a 2B with no power but also a 2:1 K:BB ratio is not worth pretty much anything. And besides, all this doesn’t even matter anymore cause we have the best 2B in baseball right now
CoxXx - June 18, 2010
I should have followed Rhyno's advice and not responded...
basically your description of Kelly Johnson as a player is flat wrong. After all, what would we want with a guy who’s hit 13 HR, 21 2B and has an ops near .900 in our OF. And yes, I think he could play OF. He’d certainly be better defensively than last year’s LF, and his arm couldn’t be any worse than Johnny Damon or Nate McLouth, among others.
Mr. Sanchez - June 18, 2010
Bingo
If KJ were making $500k, he’d be in a Braves uni this year.
buzzdeadwax - June 18, 2010

I thought it might be cool, if Chipper retires, to bring Kelly back to play second & move Prado to 3rd. (poster waits to be assaulted by anti-Kelly fans w/Fangraphs degrees)

Splitting with LA on the road also!
TCfromDubVee - June 17, 2010
and to be honest, we should’ve won on Wednesday against the DBacks. If Heyward or McLouth calls for the ball, we probably win 1-0.
Scott Coleman - June 17, 2010
Yeah but if a few breaks went against the Braves they could have easily went 4-7 over the roadtrip.
It’s baseball and these things tend to balance out.
DogDaysofSummer - June 17, 2010
You are damn right
The good thing about that play is that Mclouth isn’t stinking it up anymore (And no, I didn’t wish Mclouth to have a contusion, just to be taken out of the lineup) .
Alvaro Andres Pizza Varela - June 18, 2010
NL #1 ATL Braves
I always had faith that we could take 2 of 3. This is a solid team. Hudson has proven that sabermatrics numbers do not define his game. He is a gamer, a true Ace. Oh and one more thing, F U Mets! Play somebody real.
romone_braves91 - June 17, 2010 via mobile
When nobody can hit the ball squarely you don’t really need Ks. However Hudson is prone to more bouts of bad luck than strikeout pitchers just by how many times the ball is put in play.
bbxxj - June 17, 2010
I understand what u r saying but there is more to the game than stats alone. We should just accept the fact that Hudson is just a different player.

GB rate is super important
kbertling353 - June 18, 2010
not really
So Lowe is a better pitcher than Hanson because his ground ball rate is alot higher? GB rate tells you more about what kind of pitcher a guy is than whether or not they are having success.
Qtips - June 18, 2010
nice try
K rate and GB rate correlate to pitching success
lowe is bad because he walks more than hudson and doesn’t have as high of a GB rate
kbertling353 - June 18, 2010
And
When he eats it, it’s almost always because he leaves his sliders and sinkers up in the zone. He doesn’t get nickeled and dimed to death. When he loses it, he’s throwing BP.

There were a couple on the GT last night that set a new standard for Trolldom.
Best remedy is to make note of the name(s) and never reply. It’s exactly what they want.
It was hard for me to ignore the “no-hitter” post in the 3rd inning about our pitcher (not the first time this has happened by this person) – but I managed to sit on my hands. Reason 1,678 to hate the NBA: since 1980 only 8 different teams have won the NBA championship. Only 8!
Furthermore, out of 60 championships, the Lakers and Celtics have won 32…actually, make that 33. Only the Lakers, Spurs, Pistons, Bulls, Celtics, Rockets, Heat, and 76ers have won NBA Championships in 30 years!!! The lack of parity blows my mind!
In the same time span there have been 13 NHL Champions, 15 NFL Champions, and 19 MLB Champions. My conclusion…every sport is better than NBA Basketball.

Pavy848 - June 18, 2010
Are they going to get Steve Nash some help in the offseason?
Are they going to resign Stoudemire?
Braves24 - June 18, 2010
GM Steve Kerr quit two days ago because owner Robert Sarver didn’t want to raise the salaries of the coaching staff, medical staff, video reviewers and Kerr himself.
Sarver sold the pick to Boston that ended up being Rajon Rondo, so I think Steve Nash will never win a title with the Suns. He always has tough breaks.
Alvaro Andres Pizza Varela - June 18, 2010
Well the Suns have the best Med staff in the league. Grant Hill has been totally rejuvenated. Kerr quit but as far as I know, nobody really knows the exact reason why yet. Sarver has paid the luxury tax the last 3 years though.
The draft picks have been bad, but that was mostly D’Antoni’s fault because he didn’t like to develop rookies. Lopez and Dragic made huge advancements this year and I believe Clark will next year. But Amare coming back is key at a cost just below max so they can get another key player.

It was great game and a good series
Braves24 - June 18, 2010
I would say it was a great series
It wasn’t really a great game. Tons of missed free throws, lots of sloppy play-poor work securing loose balls, and the Celtics fouling like crazy in the fourth quarter unnecessarily to let the Lakers back in it. Was hoping for a bit higher standard of basketball in a game 7, but at least it was a close game.
Bronn - June 18, 2010
I really don’t judge until last the seven minutes or so. Yea it was sloppy play and lots of fouls by the Celtics, but when the game is close and the teams are going back in forth. I think that’s great because that means that someone has to make big shots in pressure situations. Yea it was a great series but some games could have been better
Braves24 - June 18, 2010
Baves have gone 5-2 over their past 7
And have lost 2 games in the standings.
Sure, the Mets have had some easy teams, but remember that we weren’t playing top-notch competition when we got our season turned around. Remember, it started with a sweep of the Brewers, then beating up on the Pirates on Diamondbacks (with a two game sweep of the Reds thrown in). Sometimes, when you get on a roll, everyone’s bats just settle in.
I’m hoping that they lose their mojo before Beltran gets back and going strong.

Good win tonight. Made even better by the fact that I’m in Orlando which is apparently Rays territory and my coworker loves the Rays.

The Mets aren't that good. Also haven't we been over this nonsense before?
OK, KK hasn’t been great, but he hasn’t been terrible either. The one person on a baseball team that needs to be backed up is the pitcher. KK has pitched some good games, he ought to be 4 and 5 but shit happens as old Forrest would say. Lee? Really like we can afford that? As for the Mets, they are playing over their heads and have been playing weak not strong teams. Don’t worry, even if they are good their front office will screw them up LOL!! I’m not worried about the Mets except for Francouer, WHY Frenchy you ask? Because the big goof is liable to hit a fraeking homer on a ball in the dirt the big assbite!!! LLMAO

The Mets are going to get a bit of a wake-up when they play the Yankees. Hopefully the Yankees will sweep them and put the Mets where they belong. And we should sweep the Royals.

Carl Crawford
I would really give anything to sign the guy. Too bad he’ll be a fucking Yankie.
ShawnG - June 18, 2010
If Chipper retires we would actually have a good opportunity to. I think Werth will command more money.

Could someone explain to me why the IBB to McCann
in order to load the bases for Glaus? Were they thinking he’d be easier to strike out?

Overkill on leffty/righty matchups. Bobby would have done the same thing.

I’m sure he gets enough ribbing on campus though….. or torture
a hooter's baby - June 18, 2010
no such thing as "enough" with an attitude like that
Mr. Sanchez - June 18, 2010
Haha. You're right
Football season isn’t here so my FLA hatred is set at 8.5 instead of 10
a hooter's baby - June 18, 2010
It's got little to do with hatred for Florida...
and more the overall douchiness of being a student in Athens but claiming UF. You shouldn’t see Auburn kids loving Bama, or Clemson kids who love South Carolina.
It’s a sign of self loathing, but he’s still my brother.
Mr. Sanchez - June 18, 2010
let's keep the pressure on the other teams by sweeping the Royals..Go braves!!
