Myke Jones led the Jones Attack tonight for Myrtle Beach, finishing off the game with a walkoff home run.
Gwinnett, Durham - Postponed, Rain
Mississippi - Off
Myrtle Beach 7, Potomac 6
Potomac had trouble keeping up with the Jones (see what I did there?) as the trio went 8-16 with 5 RBI, a double, and 2 home runs, including Myke Jones' 12th inning walkoff. Of course, the shortstop also helped a pair of unearned runs score with 2 errors in the game. Unearned runs were a big part of one of Randall Delgado's worst starts of the season, as 4 crossed the plate against him, but he allowed 8 baserunners of his own on hits and walks, so he had his own hand in his troubles. After giving up runs in his last 2 appearances, Luis Avilan returned to his dominant form, allowing no base runners through 3 innings while striking out 6 and picking up his first win with the Pelicans.
Rome 1, Savannah 3
Kyle Rose collected just his 6th extra base hit of the season with a 7th inning RBI double. In the top of that inning he also managed to misplay a ball in centerfield that led to an unearned run and prevent another from scoring by throwing out Sand Gnats second baseman Alonzo Harris at home.Caleb Brewer's second start went well, though he's been prone to the walk with 7 in 10 innings so far. Steve Kent has another good appearance, just his second after missing all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery. Rome's hitting coach Bobby Moore was ejected from this game, while the other team was hitting. I'd love to hear the story on that one. Michael Fisher, who spent last season playing for Myrtle Beach, had an RBI single in the game while playing first base for Savannah.
Edward Salcedo struck out in his lone plate appearance before being taken out of the game. Hopefully he left because his visa issues were cleared up, not because he got hurt. Ronald Luna has been great this season, but he should be doing great, he's 27 years old! Jesus Saldeno, who's only 17, had another fine start, and he's been very good this year, striking out 17 in 17 innings, while walking just 4 and holding opposing hitters to a .115 average.

Edward Salcedo isn’t coming to the states until July 1.

Good to know. I was half joking anyway, but it’s nice to know that he will be able to come back and get to play with a team.
cbwilk - June 16, 2010
Can’t wait. I hope he gets assigned to a full-season affiliate, but I’ll drive up to Danville or down to Florida to see him.
PWHjort - June 16, 2010
We may need to wait and see why he got pulled...
he made a play on the last out the inning before he was pulled, maybe he pulled something on it. Hope not, but I guess we’ll see if he’s in the lineup for DSL today or what because I doubt an injury report or anything of that kind would be quick to come out.
Mr. Sanchez - June 16, 2010
I like going to Danville at least once toward the end of the year anyway. I’d rather see him at Rome for the level of play, but personally it’d be easier to see him with Danville.
cbwilk - June 16, 2010
well….you could always come back to Rome and see him play….. we could have a TC night….. :-)
rbravesfan - June 16, 2010
I’ve got a plan…just have to wait a little and see if i can actually make it work.
cbwilk - June 16, 2010
I’m in on any potential Rome-based event.

Where the heck is Danville?

Aaaaah, thanks

I like Myke. The young man is flashing some really substantial upside the last 30-40 games.
fandave - June 16, 2010
I’m a big fan too… I havr no real reason why, but I remember really liking what I read on him last year when he was drafted

I just miss having a solid running threat. Having a guy with speed and some pretty good pop is just what the doctor ordered..
bwellnjonesco - June 16, 2010
The errors are piling up though...
maybe he fits better in LF or 2B. Anyone laid eyes on him enough to judge defensively?
Mr. Sanchez - June 16, 2010
He’s very solid other than the error thing and is wicked fast as well. As frustrating as it is, it may just be a developmental thing… I remember reading somewhere that Rome had the highest number of errors last season in that same infield area……
Sometimes people tend to forget that in low-A it’s not totally about winning games. It’s great to pile up the wins, but it’s also about player development…..and a lot of time the Braves, at this level, are really changing a lot of mechanics/ways of doing and it can really mess guys up while they are trying to unlearn and then relearn all at the same time…..then hopefully as they move up, these things straighten themselves out…
rbravesfan - June 16, 2010
So where are the mistakes coming from?...
being around Rome, I assume you’ve watched him a good bit. Is it bad hops? Trying to make plays when he should probably just hold the ball? Bad throws? Bad glove work? Bad feet? Is there any primary cause to his high error total? Maybe he has small hands and it gives him trouble making the transfer, which in that case may not be that fixable.
Mr. Sanchez - June 16, 2010
I don’t think it’s small hands, just an unlucky combination of some of the things you’ve listed. He hustles and works hard, so hopefully these things will sort themselves out.
rbravesfan - June 16, 2010
thanks
Mr. Sanchez - June 16, 2010
Not more Rome All-Stars?
What’s the deal? Rome only sends one guy to the game?
UGAstudent4UF - June 16, 2010
Chris Masters and Cory Rasmus, along with pitching coach Jim Czajkowski. Who else do you think should be going?
cbwilk - June 16, 2010
Both Mastes and Rasmus are well deserved. As for the others….well, Teheran started the year in Rome and then went to Myrtle, where he pitched enough games to get selected there….and Vizciano was picked for Rome and was to be the starter, but then got promoted to Myrtle after being selected, so he’ll miss the SAL game and isn’t eligible for the Cali/Carolina All-Star game….
All that was to make a long story short…actually Rome is pretty well represented across the 1st half, some of the players just are not in the SAL anymore. Some of our better position players just got beat out by better position players on other teams or fell in the same gap – got moved to Myrtle just in the nick of time to miss selection criteria for both games….
rbravesfan - June 16, 2010
exactly...
considering possibles like Teheran, Vizcaino, and Myke Jones got promoted, who elsedeserved it? Whitmer has done well since being up, and Bethancourt has been solid for his age. But neither really seem like All Stars yet.
Mr. Sanchez - June 16, 2010
Yep, aside from the guys who got called up, the only other guy I’d throw out there as deserving is Cory Harrilchak, but I’m pretty sure he was with MB when they made the selections. Who knows, Minor League All-Star games have their rosters change constantly. Every time I’ve gone to one there have been at least 3 guys there the day of who were added late.
cbwilk - June 16, 2010
And that's understandable all things considered...
being they are the minors and guys good enough to warrant all star selections are generally going to also be the guys good enough to move up a level.
Mr. Sanchez - June 16, 2010
Most of the time teams will wait for the All-Star game to move a guy up, because they like to reward the players by letting them have those personal accomplishments, but the Braves are one who have never really done that. It’s part of the organizational philosophy that the team is more important, so you need to move up because that team needs you, not the All-Star team.
cbwilk - June 16, 2010
at least for vizzy and teheran
im pretty sure they know theyre allstars. if i were them id want to relax during the all star game.
MacsGlasses - June 16, 2010
Personally I’d want to go and represent my team and my league and put on a show for the fans, but that’s just the way I think.

Recent Signees
This is a piece from Carroll Rogers on the AJC DOB’s Blog:
By the way, Braves second round pick Todd Cunningham, the 53rd pick out of Jacksonville State, has signed and is expected to report to Class A Rome on Thursday to begin his conversion from outfield to third base.
The former Cape Cod and Texas Collegiate League batting champion will take a day or two to acclimate and take some batting practice before getting into the Rome lineup. He’ll be the only Braves draftee this year to go directly to A ball. Second round pick right-hander Andrelton Simmons is in Danville, and supplemental first round pick Matt Lipka is with the Gulf Coast Braves.
Nice to see Cunningham starting in Rome.
