Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/11

Gwinnett 3, Norfolk 4

  • F. Freeman 1-4 .249 Avg
  • M. Jones 1-4 2B, .249 Avg
  • J. Thurston 1-3 HR(7), K, .238 Avg
  • M. Dunn 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K 0.65 ERA

Gwinnett scattered their hits all over the place tonight and Joey Thurston got a HR too little, too late. Jo Jo Reyes gave up 4 runs (2 earned) in 5 innings with 2 HR allowed. Mike Dunn is still fan-freaking-tastic and I don't know what the Braves are going to do with their surplus of pitching in the minors, especially all of the relievers.Jordan Schafer started the game in CF but gave way to Alex Romero after just a couple of innings. I am not sure why so if anyone has any details feel free to share.

Chattanooga 4, Mississippi 1

  • E. Cordier 6IP 4H 1R 2BB 4K 3.99 ERA

There wasn't a whole lot going on in this game. Eric Cordier pitched solidly but his offense and bullpen didn't do him any favors. Eric Duncan and Donell Linares both left this game pretty early on but I have no idea why. If anyone else does know please fill us in in the comments section.

Myrtle Beach 6, Kinston 0

  • My. Jones 1-5 2B, 2K, .333 Avg
  • J. Sucre 1-4 HR(4), BB, 2K, .214 Avg
  • M. Crim 8IP 5H 0R 2BB 9K 3.80 ERA

Matt Crim hasn't been bad this season and this start was his best one of the year. It isn't that he has been bad or really good, he has just been consistently mediocre so far and he is another that may get lost in the shuffle of Braves pitching prospects. His peripherals are pretty bad honestly but tonight they were fantastic and I am always going to root for a Citadel guy.

Greenville 7, Rome 6

  • K. Rose 2-4 2K, .271 Avg
  • J. Kreke 1-3 RBI, 2BB, .253 Avg
  • R. Hefflinger 3-5 2B, RBI, K, .275 Avg
  • S. Kent 1IP 2H 0R 0BB 2K

I feel like Steve Kent has been around forever but he is just 21 years old. He was a non-drafted free agent the Braves signed out of Australia in 2005(!!!) and he pitched two seasons in the GCL and one in the Appy league but missed all of last season from injury. He finally made his full season debut tonight and I don't know how he is going to be used going forward but scouting reports on his stuff were pretty good back in the day so I can't wait to see what he can do.

Shafer got the call to the big club. That’s why he was taken out. Or were your being sarcastic…when you said not sure why???

PS

McLouth was DL’d today.

nope I did not know this, but I see it on the MLB site now.

Wow

And in an even stranger twist the Braves now re-call Brandon Hicks to serve as back-up SS. And Shafer will remain in the minors. What a crazy day. “Need a back-up short more-so than an OF” – Wren

Just saw that. Crazy.

So did we burn an option on Schafer with this move?

There are no options to burn. You can send a player down as many times as you want in the first 4 years he’s on the 40 man.

I think Shafer re-injured himself swinging. As much as everyone wants him to be ready, that wrist is just not 100% yet.

he wasn't called up... Hicks was called up
Vizzy makes his MB debut tomorrow night, right?

I’d give anything to be at that park for a week. JT, Vizzy, Delgado and Hoover in the same rotation? That’s un-real.

yeah that is the sickness. Cooper ranked the Braves pitchers as Teheran-Vizcaino-Minor-Delgado-Hoover and he said he would listen hard on Vizcaino over teheran because his stuff is ‘sick’ with excellent control.

Has he gotten a change up yet?...

and there’s still others too left to come with Hale showing out in the pen, Perez and Otero and Brewer and Stovall, I’d say we have a plethora of pitchers.

cant forget about Oberholtzer

after a little bit of a transition to High A he has settled down and pitched well. Hopefully on July 11 when MB comes back through Wilmington he will pitch.

Faced him in High School struck me out on 3 fastballs

:::::: happy dance :::::: I’m going in mid-July…but who knows where Delgado and Hoover might be by then…. :-)

We all should have a TC Myrtle Beach Vacation Meet…

In all the years I’ve been going to Harbor Park I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone get a cheap home run. But Joe Thurston got 2 cheap ones this week.

Great to see Steve Kent finally back on the mound. Gotta love the Aussies.

on a not-so-good note

in Rome, starting pitcher Cory Rasmus had to leave the game mid-third inning when he was hit in his pitching hand by a line drive. No details on the extent of the injury were available last night.
