The Braves have five days to decide what to do with pitcher Chris Resop, either call him up to the Majors or trade him. Tonight in Norfolk, Virginia, he tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out eight and lowering his ERA to 1.84. He certainly proved that he needs to be in the Majors, and he'll get his wish pretty soon. Resop needed only 105 pitches, 80 of them strikes, for the complete game.
As good as he was, he actually didn't pitch the best game for the Gwinnett Braves this year. Todd Redmond tossed a no-hitter earlier this season.

Thata boy Poser!
Forcing the Braves’ hand on this one. Love it.
How did we get Resop in the first place?
Scott Coleman - June 10, 2010
non roster invitee to spring training
He signed a minor league deal after impressive enough during the spring. He had been in Japan.
Bronn - June 10, 2010
ah…that worked out pretty well.
Scott Coleman - June 10, 2010
We actually sold his contract to the Hanshin Tigers back in 2008. It’s amusing that we’ve got him back and might just trade him again.
Bronn - June 10, 2010
Haha...
Because we sold him.
MichaelProcton - June 11, 2010
Resop did face the minimum, though, because got a double-play immediately the hit in the second inning, and didn’t walk anyone. That’s impressive. I would argue it’s just as impressive as the no-hitter, since Redmond did issue a couple of walks in that game, and only had 3 strike outs.
Bronn - June 10, 2010
The double play was an F9, 9-4-3. Crazy. What a game.
cbwilk - June 10, 2010
For the love of Heyward, get this guy up in the pen. Get the hell rid of Jesse Chavez
Zeus12888 - June 10, 2010
He got the win tonight, too
He’s clearly better than KK.
Bronn - June 10, 2010
I know you say that in jest, but...
I wonder if he is? The way he’s been pitching you never know.
Zeus12888 - June 10, 2010
I honestly think
He could do at least as well as Lowe has been, and maybe as good as KK at this point. The component statistics are awesome. This is really close to what Kris Medlen was doing last year prior to being called up, though he didn’t do it for as many innings.
Bronn - June 10, 2010
Agreed 100%
Zeus12888 - June 10, 2010
The big difference
is age. Well, that and past history. But at some point, even I have to start believing it’s real.
Jacob Peterson - June 10, 2010
I want to believe
He’s never been a guy who maintained this kind of strike out pace before, and he couldn’t do it as a reliever. It makes me believe everything i’m hearing about his fastball-that he’s found better control for it, and found a two seamer to go with it.
Bronn - June 10, 2010
i think there’s a slight difference in tossing a 1 hit shutout in AAA and holding the D-Backs offense scoreless for 7 innings. KK does not need to be replaced.
JFP - June 10, 2010
This.
MichaelProcton - June 11, 2010
Ya’ll do realize you’re talking about Chris Resop, right? Lets not get too excited here. Will he be serivceable out of the pen, and better than Chavez? I’m willing to bet he will. But thats about it. I’m not ready to throw him in a major league rotation.
10-4 - June 11, 2010
No need to put him in the rotation. Maybe an emergency or spot start. Butwhen JJ comes back, we will have 6 starters already and he would be the 7th? Long relief is possible, but then where would Medlen or KK go? I think by bringing him up and uing him in long relief, while JJ heals, we can see what he is made of.
DawgB - June 11, 2010
I'm not sure KK fits the bill...
but I think Medlen would excel working with Saito, Moylan, EOF and Venters in critical late inning spots, helping reduce their workload.
Mr. Sanchez - June 11, 2010
Agreed completely
Meds would be great in that role. KK, not so much; he needs to be a starter.
Jacob Peterson - June 11, 2010
Definitely.
Medlen has reliever stuff and mindset. Kawakami needs to stay in the rotation, and his performance has been fine.
MichaelProcton - June 11, 2010
I've been a big Resop detractor,
but that is damn impressive, especially considering he knew this was his last chance to shine in AAA before the deadline.
He certainly deserves a chance to come up to the bigs at this point. And if we do trade him, I’d like to thank him for raising his trade value immensely these past few weeks.
Jacob Peterson - June 10, 2010
Couldn't agree more Pac
Question for you: Given the way he’s been pitching, what would you think would be a fair swap for him, if he gets traded?
Zeus12888 - June 10, 2010
It's really hard to gauge his value right now.
I have no idea what teams think he can do in the bigs. Heck, even the Braves clearly have no idea.
That said, I would think that he would fetch a “promising but flawed” low-minors prospect, or a component piece for the MLB club (4th OF / bullpen arm / etc.). In other words, nothing too special, but a heckuva lot more than he would’ve fetched before the season.
Jacob Peterson - June 10, 2010
I think...
Resop has littel value atm till he can show some serious signs in the major leagues…Unless we add to resop with acouple B+ prospects like when we got Mclouthe for Morton ++ prospects otherwise I agree that we could simple get B prospect or 4th/BP arm for the major league roster.I still think Resop will add greater value if he can get acouple starts before the trading deadline in which we could use as another trading chip for a solid bat…We will have to see what the braves think is best for the team in as a 5th starter or prospects….
Hanson-Ace - June 11, 2010
BRING HIM UP
DrB - June 10, 2010
I wish there was a way we could pry Reimold away from the O's
He’s not hitting much right now but dude is a RH power bat that would look good in our lineup.
Jay212033 - June 10, 2010
he's
ATROCIOUS in the field. So no thanks.
Jacob Peterson - June 10, 2010
We could use him to fill in as the DH for next month
Then trade him away.
Bronn - June 10, 2010
As a cardinals fan
I gotta say, we’ll happily take Resop off your hands. He’s gotta be better than Suppan.
mob16151 - June 10, 2010
Yes
But what would you give us for him?
It’s difficult to gauge because the Braves don’t seem to have much trade leverage. Either he’s promoted by June 15th or he essentially goes on waivers, free for anyone to claim (for the league minimum, while remaining under team control through 2013). Of course, the Braves will promote him into the bullpen rather than lose him for nothing.
He’s 27 years old and I don’t think he’s even eligible for arbitration next year, so you could get him for league minimum for the rest of this season and next year, then arbitration the following two. I think that’s accurate. So you’d have him through his age 30 season.
What’s that worth?
Bronn - June 11, 2010
I dunno a mid level prospect
Or an older minor leaguer. Maybe a guy like Bryan Anderson, or a Pete Kozma.
mob16151 - June 11, 2010
I think I could live with either of those. If we got Kozma, we’d pull off something of an organizational coup, going from having zero serious SS prospects to being nearly flush, since we’ve signed Salcedo and just drafted Matt Lipka. I don’t think we can have too many MI prospects considering how little success we’ve had there, historically.
Bronn - June 11, 2010
Its just 2 bad
We don’t run the Braves and the cardinals neh?
mob16151 - June 11, 2010
I'd hope for a little better, of course
Still, a mid level prospect in return for a guy who seriously holds no value for us (no room for him in the rotation now, and no room in the future) is more than perhaps the Braves will get.
Bronn - June 11, 2010
I dont blame you.
It’s just going to be hard to get something for him, I suspect. I doubt the cards do anything as well. After all we just picked up Suppan, so we’re all set. /sarcasm
mob16151 - June 11, 2010
The leverage is they get to pick what club he goes to.
A trade is the only way a competitor or division rival will have a very good shot at him.
MichaelProcton - June 11, 2010
Resop and JoJo for Pujols
TonyAlmeyda - June 11, 2010
Ha
You can have Pujols for Heyward, McCann(sp) Hudson , Jurrjenns, Glaus, Redmond, and your top 10 prospects. ;-)
mob16151 - June 11, 2010
We might consider that
Mr. Sanchez - June 11, 2010
I wouldn’t trade heyward, jurrjens, or mccann straight up for pujols. he’s got 1 year left on his deal and he’s on the wrong side of 30
telemakhos - June 11, 2010
I like
how you threw Redmond in there, like he’s a big part of our core. Awesome.
Jacob Peterson - June 11, 2010
We're getting ready to trot out Jeff Suppan every 5th day
I’d take all the pitching I could get. lol
mob16151 - June 11, 2010
I have to say, I’ve been a big fan of Nolan’s for the last 4 or 5 years, but he looks completely lost right now. At the plate, in the field, everywhere. I really think there might be something going on in his life that affecting him. It’s a shame and I just want to see him get right. He’s not the same player he was when he was here in Norfolk last year.
cbwilk - June 11, 2010
They say the Achilles has really been a problem and will probably continue to be for the rest of his career.
MichaelProcton - June 11, 2010
Can't be any worse than Hinske or Diaz
Jay212033 - June 11, 2010
Except he is
Much worse than Hinske this season. It’s not even comparable.
-C
cthabeerman - June 11, 2010
Yeah, they've been trying him at 1B some.
The thought is that he might never get back his motion after the Achilles’ surgery he had.
MichaelProcton - June 11, 2010
With Medlen in the rotation, Resop would be awesome as the long-relief. Send Chavez or Christhian down. Once JJ is healthy and available, then maybe we can move Resop for a piece. Basically, what you guys have been saying.
award6 - June 11, 2010
Unless Resop has much greater trade value than any of us could reasonably expect, given that he has been superb in AAA and the Braves have two relief pitchers who have no legitimate business remaining in the MLs, maybe we should just bring him up and see how he does.
On the other hand, we could dump him and stick Chavez and Christhian Martinez.
Which of these moves would be more highly controversial?
fandave - June 11, 2010
preview fail/
stick with Chavez and Christhian Martinez.
fandave - June 11, 2010
Martinez looked pretty good yesterday. Chavez needs to go down and Resop come up. Once JJ gets back (there appears to be no need to rush him the way Medlen is pitching) we ave lots of options. KK is pitching well, in spite of his record. Lowe is pitching better of late. Hanson and Hudson aren’t going anywhere. we could try to move either KK or Lowe. Lowe’s contract will probably not lend itself to a trade. KK might get some wins with a team that scores runs for him.
DawgB - June 11, 2010
Send down Kimbrel...
if we aren’t going to use him in tight games, or as a last resort, why have him up at all? The last two games would have been perfect to get him work and see how he handles pressure situations. We didn’t use him, and if Bobby won’t give him the chance to earn a prominent role, I don’t see the point in having him up if he’s lower than Chavez and Martinez in the pecking order.
Send Kimbrel down, Chavez can just be last in line until JJ returns.
Mr. Sanchez - June 11, 2010
I agree with this.
We should send down whoever Bobby trusts the least, especially if it’s Kimbrel.
Jacob Peterson - June 11, 2010
What's wrong with Martinez?
MichaelProcton - June 11, 2010
Resop and Lowe
for Corey Hart.
Tim Goad - June 11, 2010
maybe if we throw in about $30 M in cash.
