Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/8

Lefty Scott Diamond struck out 11 over 8 shutout innings for AA Mississippi tonight.

Lefty Scott Diamond struck out 11 over 8 shutout innings for AA Mississippi tonight.

Gwinnett 4, Syracuse 2, suspended after 4 innings

  • M. Young 2-3, .257
  • M. Jones 2-3, 2 2B, RBI, BB, .286
  • B. Canizares 2-3, RBI, .303
  • T. Gustafson 4 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 4 K, 5.64
  • The game was suspended in the top of the 5th inning due to rain in Syracuse. It will be completed tomorrow before the team's scheduled series finale. It's a shame, because the G-Braves were smacking out some hits early, with 8 through 4 innings, including 2 hit performances from Matt Young, Barbaro Canizares, and Mitch Jones, who clubbed a pair of doubles.

    Mississippi 1, Birmingham 0

  • S. Diamond 8 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 11 K, W (1), 5.17
  • The M-Braves scored their lone run in the bottom of the 3rd when Concepcion Rodriguez scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Romero. That's all Scott Diamond neeed though, as he was masterful through 8 innings, allowing just 3 hits, walking none, and striking out 11. He hadn't really had a great start this year so this was a huge night for him. He's the prototypical crafty lefty and tonight he was just plain better than the Barons.

    Myrtle Beach 8, Lynchburg 3

  • C. Miles 2-5, 3B, RBI, BB, SB (7), .260
  • G. Rodriguez 1-5, 2B, RBI, .261
  • G. Avila 2-5, .317
  • S. Sime 2-4, 2 RBI, BB, .364
  • M. Kennelly 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, .254
  • C. Shehan 1-3, 3B, RBI, BB, .197
  • J. Ortegano 5 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 5.24
  • The Pelicans have had some trouble with offense this season, but tonight they crashed out 11 hits, including 2 doubles and 2 triples. Since joining Myrtle Beach Samuel Sime is as hot as he's ever been in his professional career, hitting .364 with a .755 OPS in 22 at bats. Matt Kennelly stays hot as well with a pair of hits. He's now 5 for his last 11 with a double, a homer, and 7 RBI. I was told that Jose Ortegano would be moving to AAA soon, but I'm not sure how accurate that information is, especially considering his lack of dominance at a level he mastered last season.

    Rome 1, Asheville 9

  • J. Schafer 2-4, 2B, .333
  • R. Hefflinger 1-4, RBI, .324
  • D Hale 3 IP, 4 ER, 9 H, 2 K, 7.99
  • Jordan Schafer's rehab continues and it seems to be going well. in 5 games he's collected 6 hits, including 2 doubles, and has a .899 OPS. I hate to say it, but David Hale just hasn't been that good this season. His biggest issue is that he's been hittable, allowing 16.3 hits per 9 innings. Further proof that he's just allowing too much contact is that he's only striking out 5.3 per 9. He's a talented pitcher, so there's a good chance that something has just gone awry and the team will be able to work with him to fix it, but for now it's hard to watch.

    Schafer

Last thing I wanna do is rush him, but he’s looking awesome.

After SUCH a long layoff from playing baseball games, he looks like he hasn’t missed a beat. 2 SB, 2 2Bs, .450 OBP.

I hope he stays hot and flies through his rehab and back to Atlanta. We could use him.

He has looked good, but let’s also remember, he’s facing Low A pitchers.

Still, if he was just flat out of game shape he wouldn’t be stealing bases or hustling out doubles. If nothing else, he looks ready to start the level climb back to Atlanta .

That’s the record setting time it took for M-Braves to Beat the Barons tonight 1-0. Great job by Scott Diamond, scattering 3 hits and striking out 11 with no walks over 8 innings. K’s were nice but 0 BB were the key. Walks and pitching behind in the count have been a problem for him this year, but not tonight. Good to see him return to form! Brett Butts closed the door in the 9th w/ 1 K picking up his 1st Save. This kid has just been lights out this year – 0.54 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 22 K’s w/ only 2 BB’s over 16.2 innings!

Butts was the guy that I thought really got shafted by not being put in AAA to start the year and he’s absolutely proving he has no business in AA. He doesn’t have the most overpowering stuff, but he’s a very good pitcher and deserves a shot at the next level.

Couldn’t agree more with that assessment! Butts posted a 2.58 over 53 appearances in AA in 09. Not really sure what more he can prove at this level, especially after pitching 2 years in the SEC. I’ve seen him once this year – low to mid 90’s fastball, cutter with maybe the nastiest changed-up in the organization. Looks like he is on a mission!

a numbers crunch is just that though...

some guys get left down. Like Ortegano had anything to prove in Myrtle, but we’ve got so many slots, and guys gotta go somewhere.

Who else is thinking we should call up Teheran now?

    we need an offense

    It’s gonna happen, just not yet…….be patient…. :-)

This seems to be a nigtly question

There’s no need to rush him, he’s pitching great but still has much to learn. I say 10+ starts before he gets moved up.

Seriously, he didn’t even pitch tonight…

    Lets go Lookouts

    hahaha

Mississippi comes to Chattannoga this week, looking forward to some of that.

Friday Friday Friday night!!!! Can’t wait!!! :-)

if I get to go I'll be there wearing a lookouts cap

and maybe I’ll bring a sign saying I’m southman

Yellow “Titleist” hat, near the Big River Beer Porch for me

    can't make it :(
    Wow! Scott Diamond!

I didn’t know he had that kind of game in him. Awesome job.

You say Sammy Sime is hitting .364 with a .755 OPS. He must have practically no walks or XBH then. He’s going to have to add one or the other if he hopes to make the bigs someday.

It’s also 18 at bats. I no chance for this kind of hitting to continue from him over any extended period.
