Gwinnett 3, Indianapolis 1, suspended in 4th
Chris Resop was pitching well and Barbaro Canizares hit his second homer in as many days, but the game was suspended in the middle of the 4th inning due to rain. It will be completed before tomorrow's scheduled game.
Misssissippi4, Montgomery 8
After throwing great in his last 2 starts, Scott Diamond got rocked around today. The Biscuts were efficient, scoring 5 of the 8 baserunners he allowed. Before this year Ryne Reynoso had very few hiccups on his path toward the Majors, but he's been humbled time and time again this year. After failing to perform as a starter for Gwinnett, he was sent to Mississippi's bullpen and has been a little worse. He gave up 3 runs in 2 innings tonight, though he did strike out 3. Eric Duncan is too good for AA, but if the last 3 years are any indication, he's not good enough for AAA.
Myrtle Beach 4, Frederick 3
Forget all this talk about where he should be on prospect lists, if Julio Teheran keeps this up he'll be in the Majors by the end of the year. Ok, I seriously dout that will happen but wow, oh wow he's good. He struck out 14 of the 30 batters he faced tonight and continues his dominance; in 60.1 innings this season with Myrtle Beach and Rome he has a 0.90 ERA, a 0.85 WHIP, and is striking out 10.9 batters per 9 innings while racking up 5.2 Ks per walk. In-sane. Also, my boy LV Ware cracked his first homer with the Pelicans.
Rome 2, Savannah 5
Chris Masters continues to dominate the Sally League, though he only went 5 innings today. Cory Harrilchack spent some time with Myrtle Beach this month and didn't really excell there, but he was great for Rome in May, hitting .329 with a .824 OPS along with 11 RBI and 6 stolen bases. And Jake Hanson continues his good work, hitting his first homer of the season.
DSL Braves, postponed, rain
Pretty much every game in the Dominican got rained out today.

To Julio Teheran
Damn son
acie4mvp - May 31, 2010
Jo Jo Reyes > Julio Teheran (better D)
Scott Coleman - May 31, 2010
And he is alphabetically first.
Obviously a sign that he is superior.
DogDaysofSummer - May 31, 2010
But how many winz does he have?
bbxxj - June 1, 2010
Seriously how many bad ass pitchers can we produce.
McCann and McWill - May 31, 2010
Teheren = Strasburg who?
Pavy848 - June 1, 2010
I like how he’ll probably dominate the shitty Pirates lineup and everyone will be all over his nuts. Just wait until he faces a real offense like ours.
Scott Coleman - June 1, 2010 via mobile
A real offense? Man, things have changed a lot I guess. I mean, really, there are still some major issues with our lineup. Also, I’ve been waiting for him to fail a bit too, but the reality is that Strasburg is just plain good.
cbwilk - June 1, 2010
There may be issues, but the fact is we scored the most runs of anybody in May and we’ve been on fire since Prado and Heyward moved up and Hinske started playing more. And not to forget we’ve won 16 out of 20 (or something like that.) I definately think of us as a “real” offense.
And Strasburg could certainly be good, if not great, but I’ll hold judgement until he pitches against non-AAA and Mountain West players before I call him a “top-5 pitcher” in the league or whatever they’re saying about him.
Scott Coleman - June 1, 2010 via mobile
Thanks to MLB TV...
I got to enjoy the Rockies/Giants game. No one is better than Ubaldo Jimenez right now, no body. Between him and Halladay, that’s 1 and 2, and I guess there’s another 3 that can slot above Strasberg (Wainwright, Carpenter, Sabathia, etc)
Mr. Sanchez - June 1, 2010
lincecum?
BravesRaleigh - June 1, 2010
Generally yes..
but at the moment, he’s not his normal, unhittable self.
Mr. Sanchez - June 1, 2010
Strasburg is just plain dirty. But I love how Teheren is matching (yes I know not at the same level, whatever) him but being way younger.
Pavy848 - June 1, 2010 via mobile
Just for future reference, it’s Teheran.
cbwilk - June 1, 2010
Thanks
Pavy848 - June 1, 2010 via mobile
This
He had 3 un-hittable pitches going yesterday. 98-99 mph fastball with movement most pitchers dream of. A 90 mph splitter and a curve that are just filthy when hitters are worried about that fastball. That Giants never had a chance.
ajones2522 - June 1, 2010
his fastball is the best in the league
Braves24 - June 1, 2010
99? I thought he sat mid-90s.
ATLforlife - June 1, 2010
Really, I’ve seen him throw 97 but I hadn’t heard or read anywhere about him hitting 99.
cbwilk - June 2, 2010
It may have been due to the 1-2 mph TV radar bump but that’s what it was reading. One was at 98 and moved from the inner half of the plate to off the plate outside. The ump still called it a strike probably because he didn’t believe his eyes.
ajones2522 - June 2, 2010
That last line goes for Teheran too...
after his first start in Myrtle, my mind said even if this kid is the ish, there’s no way he does that on a routine basis against guys 3, 4, 5 years older than him across the board. But he does. Absolutely amazing.
Mr. Sanchez - June 1, 2010
c'mon
i know i’m mr. negativity around here, but I think it’s reasonable to say you might be a little over the top here. don’t get me wrong i’m super psyched about this run but it was at least partially driven by the phillies absolutely stinking the past few weeks. and further, the braves haven’t exactly faced the cream of the crop of teams and pitchers lately.
so let’s be happy but not get carried away.
jerryclore - June 1, 2010
Haha, our offense has been good because the Phillies have been stinking it up. That makes tons of sense. It’s great to be reasonable and all but you have to be logical too.
ajones2522 - June 1, 2010
It has zero to do with PHI, since we’ve faced them 1 game. Give the Braves their credit.
FitzFan - June 1, 2010
yea
a real offense has 1 guy OPS’ing .589 and another OPS’ing .559
BravesRaleigh - June 1, 2010
haha. You just used OPS’ing as a verb. nice!
dunnytwogloves - June 1, 2010
SCOTT DIAMOND TO REPLACE KK
DogDaysofSummer - June 1, 2010
Sigh
Not this again. No offense dude but we are filled at the MLB rotation area. Plus next year you’d replace a pitcher with Meds or Minor.
Pavy848 - June 1, 2010 via mobile
………….
DogDaysofSummer - June 1, 2010
Dude, sarcasm much?
ATLforlife - June 1, 2010
Ha ha whoops
My bad, I didn’t pay attention to his line in the write up. All I remembered late last night was someone initially made an angry fan post on that idea.
Pavy848 - June 1, 2010
Teheran is making things interesting
The season isnt halfway over and he is already making a strong case to be in AA. If him and R. Delgado go to AA and continue this dominance we will either
A: Have an amazing 1-2-3 in AAA with Delgado, Minor, and Teheran.
or
B: See all of our starters shipped out of Atlanta through next season.
There is already speculation about the team trading J.J. he is going to be heading to arbirtration and Boras has already spoken about how he does not agree with players signing through their arb years so J.J. could be shipped out for a cheaper replacement like Minor. Also next year is K.K’s final year so we could see him start the season in Atlanta but if one of Delgado or Teheran is tearing it up in AAA we could see him traded and one of those guys brought up.
Only reason im speaking about any of that is because last year Frank Wren showed he had balls and would do what was needed to field the best team even if it meant hurting some feelings.
The only downside with having all of those guys in the rotation is that there is no guarantee they will succeed in the majors (See MILB killer JoJo Reyes)
drumzalicious - June 1, 2010
I still say it would be nice to see the guys like Teheran and Delgado run through the league a few times. Going through the lineups once is great, but you really get the test of a guy based on how he does against guys a second time out. Also, these kids are insanely young, there’s no reason to start moving them up just because.
cbwilk - June 1, 2010
Details...
I was 2 rows behind home plate for Julio’s start.
He was striking guys out, almost two an inning, and was still throwing up pitch counts of 9, 10, 8…ridiculous.
He threw maybe 102 pitches in his 8 innings, maybe 104….with a max of 17 in the 4th I believe.
He struck out the O’s most veteran prospect, Billy Rowell, a guy who was a bonus baby, high draft pick, 4×.
Teheran was sitting at 94/95 with great late movement on the fastball…a little loose at times when he reached back sometimes, but very much in control of the 93/94 mph stuff.
He worked in two types of curve, one a nice hammer job, and the other more of a slurve. Both of these were consistently at 71 and 74, a further testament to how profoundly good the guy’s mechanics are.
He had two types of changeups, one a circle, and the other a straight. These were right at about 80, demonstrating a nice speed gap of about 13-15 mph.
He carved up their lineup on about 5 hours sleep after the team drove through the night from MB.
I daresay he only got to a 3 ball count 3 or 4 times. And as all of you can see, didn’t walk a single batter. Of the 6 hits, 3 were legitimately hit hard. Of all the outs, only one was hit hard in my recollection (a first AB of the game bullet that the 3B made an excellent play on to get the out).
I doubt I have ever seen such a dominating minor league pitching performance. The kid reminds me of a combo of Doc Gooden and Pedro Martinez.
Guy from MILB.com was there taking pics. Imagine we’ll be looking for a feature here soon. Think his K to BB ratio since the callup is 28/3.
flyers13 - June 1, 2010
LOL Doc Gooden and Pedro.
yondaime4 - June 1, 2010
ive seen him
and i see the Gooden comparison.
Pedro, however, I don’t see (except for maybe the movement on his pitches), because Pedro is a munchkin next to Teheran (he’s my height and I’m 6’3").
apoxonbothyourhouses - June 1, 2010
My misgivings also...size/Pedro
However, this guy is nowhere near 6’3….i am 6’3, and i put him at about 6’1 1/2….and he still only weighs 160 soaking wet…he has room for another 20 lbs and still look lean.
We were sitting behind Delgado and JJ, and those guys are both taller.
What makes me add the Pedro to the Doc mix is the string he pulls on his changeups…guys had NO chance. He was toying with them with all his off-speed stuff.
My buddy and I commented to each other that we think they only hit one change he left up the whole night.
flyers13 - June 1, 2010
Yeah, Julio is more like what you said, 6’1", maybe 6’2" tops. And very, very skinny. Randall is about 6’5" and I think JJ is something like 6’2" or 6’3".
cbwilk - June 1, 2010
From afar, Delgado almost reminds me of Tommy Hanson. Especially when I hear rumblings that he has a SL that they won’t let him use yet. Idk, he just seems like another big guy with potentially 4 pitches.
timmy3 - June 1, 2010
Big hands...
Teheran and Delgado both have very long fingers that can take care of a lot of the late movement without stressing their elbows and wrists…
Both get a nice snap on the ball, with a real free and easy effort…
My buddy saw Delgado last time he was up here in the DC area and he was almost as dominant as Teheran…but, lemme tell you, yesterday was a treat.
I was privileged enough to see Andruw at Greenville, and Heyward on his way thru, and this performance was equally impressive in terms of the body language he carries himself with….Delgado demonstrates similar comfort.
flyers13 - June 1, 2010
Man Andruw was so freaking impressive when he was in the Minors. I still don’t think I’ve seen anyone like him.
cbwilk - June 2, 2010
Good stuff. This is exactly what I said about him when I saw him. Also, striking out Billy Rowell isn’t that impressive, that guy is terrible at baseball. Thanks for the info.
cbwilk - June 1, 2010
What’s the difference between a circle change and a… not circle change?
ATLforlife - June 1, 2010
grip and movement
straight change is gripped with index, middle, and ring fingers on top. circle change is gripped almost the same but with index finger and thumb touching. compare grips here.
circle change will break down and to the right (for righties) while the straight change is, well, mostly straight
atl192485 - June 1, 2010
Thanks.
ATLforlife - June 1, 2010
Thanks, great stuff
Braves24 - June 1, 2010
This should be the 3rd straight year
we have a top 5 prospect on our hands. Still, we shouldn’t rush Teheran.
GouldisGold - June 1, 2010
I agree on rushing the guy...
However if he remains that dominant in MB over 5-6 starts, he has to get the call to Jax.
As of yesterday, he didn’t get to work on any situations he’s going to encounter in the majors…no fielding practice, no adversity…
flyers13 - June 1, 2010
Yeah, we can’t really leave these guys in Myrtle if they continue to prove to dominant for the CAR. Doulbe-A is no small jump, but it’s not really fair to anyone to leave them there if they keep this up. They need to actually be challenged to get better.
timmy3 - June 1, 2010
So many games have been delayed lately! Not just minor leagues, but the majors too. Darn rain
MBL1 - June 1, 2010 via mobile
I was really looking forward to a Salcedo update this morning. Thanks alot..rain..
bwellnjonesco - June 1, 2010
And today is another off day...
4 days in, only 1 game. Sad. And I’m still a little surprised they aren’t getting Yasser Gomez some at bats there until he gets his visa issues settled.
Mr. Sanchez - June 1, 2010
Wow
One word. Julio. Wow. That is all I can say
ArmyITSpec - June 1, 2010
cbwilk
I know i’ve asked you before but I just wanted to know do you have an update on Robert Brooks?
ArmyITSpec - June 1, 2010
This is a guy who had potential
Was injured all of last season and didn’t make a full season roster this year.
Jay212033 - June 1, 2010
Thanks
I knew he was injured and I haven’t heard his name this year so I figured he hadn’t fully healed yet
ArmyITSpec - June 1, 2010
Yeah, he broke his leg last year. There was a guy with the Orioles who broke his leg last year in ST and he just started playing again last week. So maybe Brooks will come back when Danville starts up. But, if he doesn’t, it might be that he’s just not going to play again.
