Yunel Escobar's groin injury must have been more serious than originally thought. The Braves' shortstop last played in Thursday's game against the Cardinals, a game in which he collected 2 hits and played stellar defense -- after he pulled his groin while playing defense. After missing the entire Astros series the Braves have decided the best course of action is to let Escobar rest. Therefore they have purchased the contract of shortstop Brandon Hicks from AAA Gwinnett.
For the season the 24-year old Hicks is hitting just .179 with a .520 OPS with 1 homer, 6 RBI and 4 stolen bases, but he's shown life recently, hitting .265 with a .766 OPS in his last 10 games, including a pair of doubles in Sunday's game. While his bat likely isn't ready for the Majors yet, his defense certainly is, as he combines a strong throwing arm with smart, precise fielding.
Omar Infante is likely to get the bulk of the playing time in Escobar's absence. The veteran has started well, hitting .333 with a .768 OPS in 44 plate appearances, and is 7 for his last 16. The Braves can make Escobar's disablement retroactive, meaning he will be eligible to return on May 15th. This is mainly a move to ensure that the Braves have two warm bodies that can play shortstop.

Infante - the every day player
A little worry went through me when Infante said something in the AJC about him feeling like he could play every day, but he basically accepts his role as what it is. Might he not realize this is the best way he can make a living playing this sport, being a utility guy?
djvog - May 3, 2010
yeah I think hes proven hes an everyday guy. versitle-plays basically every position, great hitter for average.
Braves Biceps - May 3, 2010
I wonder if this a move to allow Chipper a few days off, rather than Escobar’s injury being more serious than thought. Chipper was out of the lineup the day Escobar got hurt, but with Yunel down giving Chipper a few days rest would have left them with no infielders on the bench (other than Hinske, who is the top pinch hitter).
Lennox - May 3, 2010
Can’t you move Glaus to third and Hinske to first if Chipper needs a day off now that Escobar is out.
Walker Wallace - May 3, 2010
glaus to third
is not ideal.
atl192485 - May 3, 2010
Seriously
This is the one injury we couldn’t afford. Let’s hope Escobar is ready to come back just as soon as his DL stint ends.
Bronn - May 3, 2010
Not really
An injury to Prado, McCann, Hanson or Hudson would be worse.
REG233710 - May 3, 2010
You forgot the Christ child.
timmy3 - May 3, 2010
Knock on wood! A million times.
djvog - May 3, 2010
Well
before the season Prado wasn’t considered quite as crucial a piece- then he exploded out of the gate. Ross would be just fine as a 2-3 week fill-in if Big Mac gets hurt, and Medlen might not be Han/Hudson, but he could step in for either without a significant drop in production. Aside from The Kid, though, everybody knew we really couldn’t stand to lose Esco due to the dearth of SS talent in the pipeline, and even the previous emergency guy (Diory) disabled as well.
J-Freak - May 3, 2010
hicks is an awesome defender. we’ll be fine with him and infante filling in for a few weeks.
Braves Biceps - May 3, 2010
It’s not about the defense. It’s about the drop-off in offense from having Hicks in the lineup instead of Escobar.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - May 3, 2010
But realistically it’s gonna be Infante and not Hicks, which isn’t as big of a dropoff.
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
I know that. I was just arguing the point Braves Biceps made.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - May 3, 2010
Esco hasn’t been batting well this year. It won’t hurt as much as it would if he were raking.
BullManUGA - May 3, 2010
Came here to say this.
I’ll tip my hat instead.
J-Freak - May 3, 2010
Yunel is far more important than any of those guys for one simple reason – depth. We have no other legit SS ready to play. Hicks is great with the glove, but poor at the plate. Infante is below average at SS, but decent at the plate.
Losing Prado is simple – we have 2 or 3 guys who can adequately play 2B. Losing Hanson or Huddy would hurt, but Medlen is right there ready to fill in (not to mention a couple of AAA guys who could make the jump.)
Esco is the one guy we cannot replace – thus making his injury the worst possible for the team.
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
Good luck to all 3 of them
Hoping for a full, speedy recovery from Yunel… Wishing for the best for Infante, who I had favored over Prado before last year… and good luck to Brandon Hicks as he’s finally given the chance to show what he’s got in the majors.
mattlanta - May 3, 2010
So our offense finally gets going...
And freakin Yunel goes to the DL. Wonderful.
Scott Coleman - May 3, 2010 via mobile
Hey, at least our offense got going WITHOUT Yunel playing….so it wasn’t like he was the one that provided the spark for this recent run of offense…
dunnytwogloves - May 3, 2010
Oh and is this a Talking Chop "exclusive"?
This isnt anywhere on the sites I usually check for my Braves stuff. Insider info maybe?
Scott Coleman - May 3, 2010 via mobile
well, now you know where your TC dues go…
schlagdawg - May 3, 2010
The article on the atlantabraves.com says he’ll be re-evaluated on Monday.
10-4 - May 3, 2010
You heard it here first!
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
Does It Bug Anybody Else
that this injury, which has now become DL-worthy, wasn’t attended to on the field when it happened? The last batter struck out, so obviously he didn’t compound the injury. But he was limping around, stretching in pain after the play, and they didn’t send Porter out to check on him. Just seems like such a dumb chance to take with your young SS. And since he’s been in the doghouse lately, it makes it feel a little slimey that they didn’t go out there. If he’d had to lay out for a grounder on out three… ugh.
Bubdylan - May 3, 2010
yunel wasn't exacly on top of his game though
a lot of stupid mistakes and wasn’t swinging the bat too well. maybe some time off to rest his groin and maybe refocus is just what he needs. The way infante has played the past few days I’m not worried at all.
SouthernPanther - May 3, 2010
hmm
I kind of would rather see Hicks playing SS on an every day basis just because of this spectacular defense he’s supposed to have. Kinda wouldnt mind Escobar being traded . . . .
bring on the pitch forks
drumzalicious - May 3, 2010
No pitch forks from me bro, I’d like to see Hicks succeed at SS and wouldn’t mind them dealing Escobar.
Hicks hasn’t really shown a solid enough track record with the bat in the minors, so a trade might be unlikely.
Mighty Healthy - May 3, 2010
Tell me you're kidding...
The 24 year old Hicks who hit .237 in AA? And is now hitting .197 in AAA?
Yeah, I want to trade our cheap, extremely talented 27 year old shortstop so he can get more playing time.
ATLandUNC - May 3, 2010
I agree. However much we all want young kids to succeed
I just really don’t see Hicks ever being a starting shorstop in the show. Probably not even a solid back up. I just don’t see it, and I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong if it happens.
kreese555 - May 3, 2010
Watch Brandon hit a few games then tell me how you feel.
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
has more to do with
Escobars mental lapses in the field.

justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
Brandon Hicks Hitting…

And of course fielding…

Dave_D - May 3, 2010
Where’s the pic of him striking out and throwing a temper tantrum?
BravesCPO - May 3, 2010
That happens way too much.
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
My point exactly
If there are going to be pics posted of what he looks like as a player, that one definitely needs to be in there so people aren’t surprised.
BravesCPO - May 3, 2010
Are you Bffs with his mom/wife?
Is there anyone you DON’T know?
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
You’ve seen me work, you tell me.
cbwilk - May 4, 2010
I think the icing on the cake is that you know 2 girls that I went to high school with – a high school of about 70 people….
justincredubil02 - May 4, 2010
I’m awesome. Spread the word.
cbwilk - May 4, 2010
I really wanted to catch one of your shows. If you are in Texas in the next 2 weeks or Afghanistan sometime in the next 7 months, let me know!
justincredubil02 - May 4, 2010
He actually throws tantrums even though he’s not a good hitter anyway? Wow!
FitzFan - May 3, 2010
And apparently doesn’t sign autographs – even though he is hitting a buck something.
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
if nothing else,
this will be interesting.
Jareth Cutestory - May 3, 2010
i hate to break it to ya this way...
but it’s not going to be interesting. brandon hicks might (big might) get to start one game before may 15. bobby’s not going to take infante out of the lineup, and as of right now, he shouldnt.
ryan c - May 3, 2010
Hicks could be a pinch hitter if Cox wants to go in that direction.
Walker Wallace - May 3, 2010
GEEZ people....
so much negitivity again……the kid’s getting a chance most people never get…..would it kill y’all to be happy for him and let him enjoy it a little bit???
rbravesfan - May 3, 2010
Seriously...
it’s not like he’ll do any worse than the unprepared AAA SS we forced into that spot last year (Diory Hernandnez).
Mr. Sanchez - May 3, 2010
He is a much much better defender.
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
Point was though...
it’s not like Hicks can do worse at the plate than Diory did last year.
Mr. Sanchez - May 3, 2010
leadoff
Having Yunel on the shelf isn’t the best scenario but Infante at leadoff seems alright. Remember back in ‘08 when he was lighting it up? Here’s hoping we have a taste of that!
Chesterhighwater - May 3, 2010 via mobile
We had another guy off the bench in ’08 that was lighting it up too.
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
could you be speaking of
gasp
kelly johnson?!
Jareth Cutestory - May 3, 2010
No. He was a starter in in 08.
I am talking about Norton.
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
Well there’s been no mention of this on the Transactions wire that I’ve seen…but then again with the Braves being off today it could possibly not happen until later today.
If Hicks does get called up, he’ll have to be put on the 40 man roster. Looks like the Braves have 39 players on their 40 right now with 3 being on the DL, JoJo, Schafer, and Diory. So I guess they have room…
But, who will play SS for Gwinnett now…Brandon is the only SS on the roster.
Dave_D - May 3, 2010
They’ll probably call up Luis Bolivar from Mississippi. It was surprising that he wasn’t there to start out.
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
Judging by the numbers, Eric Duncan (if he plays SS, he’s listed as IF) or Randy Gress should be called up as they’ve been more productive at the plate.
Dave_D - May 3, 2010
Duncan can’t play SS and Randy Gress is a backup. I love Randy to death but he wouldn’t do well as an everyday AAA player. Every game Bolivar has played this year has been at SS and he’s played 224 games of AAA. Trust me, he’s gonna be the guy.
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
Ahh well, that’s why it’s great to have people like you that know better than us who just look at stats. ;-) I guess if Bolivar gets called up Gress will be pressed into duty.
I’m not sure if Thurston can play SS…as I’ve only seen him play 2B and 3B…and I don’t think they’d be comfortable with Holt or Timmons at SS. Hopefully they don’t sign Chris Burke like they did last year.
Dave_D - May 3, 2010
Thurston was originally a SS but he hasn’t played there since 02 or so. You’ve seen him, so you know how immobile he is. I don’t think Holt’s ever played there. Timmons was originally a SS too, but he hasn’t played there much in recent years. I think they’d be fine with him for a few games but not a few weeks.
Mississippi has Juan Gonzalez, who’s played more at SS in his career than anywhere else, but he’s on the DL. Don’t know if he’s actually hurt or it’s just a DL to create a roster spot move, but if he’s healthy he’ll probably get the playing time in AA.
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
Could Timmons?...
Duncan to 3rd and Timmons to SS?
Mr. Sanchez - May 3, 2010
Like I said, Wes was originally a SS, so he could play there. It’s all up to what the Braves want to do. But everyone really needs to relax about Duncan, he’s not actually this good. In 1415 AAA plate appearances he’s hit .226 with a .633 OPS and he hit .204 with a .527 OPS in 345 PA last year in AAA. He’s likely got some luck on his side right now in AA.
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
Should be Gress. He’s ready, and would have Braves fans saying “Heyward who?”
10-4 - May 3, 2010
over/under brandon hicks ABs before yunel comes back?
i think i’ll set it at 4, and take the under
lingsched - May 3, 2010
Over.
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
It will be 4 and there will be no winner.
BullManUGA - May 3, 2010
no, you’ll win because this is like the second time in a week you’ve had to teach someone about betting. lol
schlagdawg - May 3, 2010
except the bookmaker...
they love a push.
Mr. Sanchez - May 3, 2010
You can’t set it at an even number and not offer a push. It has to be 3.5 or 4.5 (or any decimal, really).
I’ll take the over – 5 or 6 ABs.
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
Infante may be the man who sparks this team
Anyone remember last year when he was THE MAN before breaking his hand or wrist??
This may not be a bad thing for the Braves overall. Just need Chipper and BMac to join Glaus, Prado and Heyward on the hit parade and we’re in business.
Nova Scotia Steve - May 3, 2010
I agree
about Infante. It seems like every at bat he at least puts the ball in play. I look forward to seeing him in an everday role (hopefully as a leadoff hitter). The infante -prado order worked well the other day. When Yunel comes back throw him in left field because he cant be any worse than their current left fielders.
AU34 - May 3, 2010
Melky Cabrera is much better than Omar Infante.
justincredubil02 - May 4, 2010
Just wondering if any of you actually watch the Braves games
You talk about Escobar as if he is a vital cog in our lineup but in reality he kills the offense worse than any player other than Glaus and at least Troy has some power. Escobar leads the world in hitting into double plays over the last 2 years and is hitting below the Mendoza line this year and if you take away his fist game of the year the guy is hitting around .100. Escobar needs to be traded and while he is here he should never bat anywhere but 8th because he has proved to be the biggest choker on the team in big at bats. He hits well well with runners in scoring position but look at the rest of the numbers and you will see that he is horrible. His mental mistakes are the worst of any Braves in the last 30 years and he shows no leadership what so ever. Since when does a shortstop who is hitting under .200 allowed to trot to first on ground balls and worst of all when he grounds into a double play the guy trots. I cannot stand this guy and he kills the team chemistry. Watch his interactions with the other players and you will see he is stand offish and arrogant as can be. Infante is more of a leader and clutch hitter and overall very solid player with good gap power who can hit to all fields with some pop to left. I take a average shortstop over escobar any day because of intangibles. Is it ironic or something to be considered that Escobar goes to the DL and the team sweeps Houston and scores about 7 a game in the 3 game series with him out? Remember the fact that every pitcher we have faced for two weeks has looked like a Cy Young winner and hitting is contagious just as bad hitting is also and its a factor when players do not like another player on the team.
Brickstonethebone - May 3, 2010
Paragraphs, dude, paragraphs.
Also, worst mental lapses in 30 years? Does the name Lonnie Smith ring a bell?
You said “fist.” Haha!
BullManUGA - May 3, 2010
Comic Book Guys says:
“Worst. Post. Ever.”
“kills the offense worse than any player other than Glaus” – some evidence to back up this tantrum?
Be honest. Just say “I don’t like this kid.” Not this nonsense you’ve spewed.
UMDBHIK - May 3, 2010
I watch the games. I’m not liking his trots to 1st base either. Other than that, I want Esco healed up and back in the line up. Sure he’s got a few bone-headed plays per season, yes he does GIDP’s too much. But he’s a mighty good short stop, with a cannon arm, capable of long error-free play. Capable of batting .300 with a little power. You don’t dump those guys when they are being paid $425,000 a year.
bighop - May 3, 2010
And are just short of their prime years.
UMDBHIK - May 3, 2010
UMDBHIK with the closing assist

cbwilk - May 3, 2010
So well said, and so applicable to many other comments…
Lizziebeth - May 3, 2010
And just how is Troy Glaus killing this offense? He is the 2nd best hitter right now behind Heyward, and Heyward only gets the nod because of the HRs.
Learn to communicate on the interwebs, please.
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
rec'd!
Scott Coleman - May 3, 2010
This is so beyond wrong I don’t even know where to begin.
PWHjort - May 3, 2010
Lonnie Smith? Give me a break
Smith was just over weight and slow. Escobar finds new ways every day to screw up and his lack of hustle and premmadona attitude make him a outcast. I have many more paragraphs for Escobar but not worth my time. To hear him be defended is comical and further proof your living in a dream world or not watching the games. Coaching would help also. Just look at what K Johnson and Jeff have done after leaving.
Brickstonethebone - May 3, 2010
Kelly has lead the D-backs to an 11-14 start
Jeffy is 7 for his last 46
I’ll take Esco over both of them, because I know what an early season slump is, not to mention a reply button. KJ has indeed had a great start, don’t be surprised if he regresses a touch. If you’ve been watching, he’s what is called a streaky hitter.
bighop - May 3, 2010
Funny how Frenchy’s numbers drop when his ridiculous BABIP falls back down to earth.
How many BBs does he have in the past 3 weeks? People are crazy if they think Jeff has turned a corner.
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
During the 46 at bats, Jeffy has 2 BB. He’s 1 for 4 tonight with 1 BB.
bighop - May 3, 2010
Thanks.
Splitting hairs here: isn’t it impossible to have a walk in any number of ABs?
: )
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
2 BBs in 46 PAs (or is it 48?) is approximately 30 BBs on the season. I’ll even be nice and say he’ll get 40-50. Still, that’s not great. It just shows that he’s not really a more patient hitter. He’s always going to be a free swinger.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - May 4, 2010
He had 8 BBs prior to those two. He has more than 2 so far this season (should be 10 total BBs if my math is correct).
He, for some reason, was walking quite a bit in the first two weeks of the season.
justincredubil02 - May 4, 2010
What does Lonnie Smith being overweight have to to with him pulling the biggest brain fart in Braves postseason history?
People defend Esco for every reason Bighop pointed out. If you can’t see that, maybe you should actually watch some games.
Esco was finally showing signs of life at the plate. He was huge offensively & defensively last year. You are blind if you can’t see how much this lineup will miss both.
FitzFan - May 3, 2010
You know, I should have banned you when you spewed off a racist tirade earlier in the week. You’ve got one more chance on here. Don’t screw it up.
cbwilk - May 3, 2010
I think this guy was one of those people that raised a stink when we rid ourselves of Frenchy last year.
BullManUGA - May 3, 2010
THAT should have gotten him banned.
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
You said he has the biggest mental lapses in 30 years. Smith’s was orders of magnitude bigger than anything Escobar has done this year.
BullManUGA - May 3, 2010
You mean this overweight? Yup. What a whale.
UMDBHIK - May 3, 2010
Hick's big chance
Well if B. Hicks wants to be a major leaguer then this is his big shot. Escobar cannot be replaced by anyone that is ready and notice I say ready to be called up that is currently in our minor league system.
Hicks has to stop striking out PERIOD! That is his one big downfall.
Infante is going to see most of the playing time as mention above however Hicks is going to have to start a game or two for sure b/c if we lose Infante as we saw last year we are in deep trouble.
SO MR. HICKS who are you ?
J. Schafer call up
or
J. Heyward
Only time will tell.
Holty_Panthers_Fan - May 3, 2010
Erm...
That’s a very awkward comparison. Hicks will be neither Schafer (won starting job with excellent spring, proceeds to break wrist and suffers essentially a lost season) nor Heyward (Our Savior descending on a cloud to claim his Kingdom). Therefore

J-Freak - May 3, 2010
lol
Scott Coleman - May 3, 2010
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
southman - May 4, 2010
Never, ever again? This may be difficult in the major leagues.
10-4 - May 4, 2010
Where’s Thurston? I don’t mind Hicks being called up but he has been struggling in AAA and struggled last year in AA. The potential is definitely there but I thought they were going to give him time work on his strikeouts and delay his arbirtration clock.
Braves24 - May 3, 2010
It’s because Omar will be getting the starts, and with Hicks’ outstanding D he makes a much better late-inning defensive option than a guy like Thurston. He’s not being called up to start.
J-Freak - May 3, 2010
Thurston can’t play SS.
justincredubil02 - May 3, 2010
He’s also not that great of a hitter. Despite the “veteran presence”.
cbwilk - May 4, 2010

Then you get the hits.
Then you get the weeeeemen.
UMDBHIK - May 3, 2010
Oh Yunel. You never cease to amaze me.
Scott Coleman - May 3, 2010 via mobile
Cuban B indeed!
10-4 - May 4, 2010
Happy for Hicks
This is no make or break situation for the guy though. I don’t think anyone in the Braves organization expects him to hit much. If he just comes up and plays ten or twenty innings of top notch defensive baseball and isn’t an automatic out at the plate then I think the brass will be happy with his work. You don’t see it as much as you used to, but an all glove no bat utility infielder isn’t such an unusual thing in the major leagues. Rafael Belliard anyone?
KC Ryan - May 3, 2010
