Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/28 - No Hitter Edition

Gwinnett 4, Louisville 0

  • W. Timmons 1-3 RBI, BB, .262 Avg
  • M. Jones 2-4 2B, RBI, .240 Avg
  • T. Redmond 9IP 0H 0R 2BB 3K 4.79 ERA

Todd Redmond might have been the last guy in the Braves organization I expected to throw a no hitter. Well maybe not the last guy but he just isn't one of the people you think of when you are talking about potential no hit bids. But damn if he didn't prove me wrong tonight! He worked efficiently throwing just 105 pitches with 66 for strikes. He gave up nearly twice as many flyballs as grounders but he still faced just one batter over the minimum. Overall a fantastic game for him and something to build on going forward.

Wilmington 4, Myrtle Beach 3

  • C. Miles 2-3 2B, CS(7), .253 Avg
  • B. Oberholtzer 7IP 8H 3R 0BB 3K 5.67 ERA

After being positively terrible for his first 4 starts for the Pelicans Brett Oberholtzer appears to have figured something out. Interestingly his peripherals are pretty similar to what he posted in the Sally League but with about twice as many hits allowed. Could be he was just getting hit unlucky there for a hot minute and now things are normalizing.I still don't understand why Chris Masters didn't get the call here as well.

Mississippi 8, Mobile 6

  • A. Richardson 2-4 RBI, K, .556 Avg
  • W. Cabrera 3-5 2B, 2 RBI, K, .331 Avg
  • E. Duncan 2-2 2B, RBI, .314 Avg

Mississippi scored all 8 of their runs in the 8th and 9th innings to overcome a 5 runs deficit for the win. As you can see Willie Cabrera pushed his Avg up to .331 on the season and doesn't appear to be cooling off any time soon. He is among the league leaders in Avg and doubles so far this season. I wouldn't mind a LF who hits a bunch of doubles and knows how to take a walk. Also for those who weren't aware Antoan Richardson up there is another journeyman minor leaguer that the Braves have picked up to spark their punchless minor league offenses.

Savannah 0, Rome 4

  • K. Rose 2-3 2 SB(14), .280 Avg
  • C. Harrilchak 3-4 K, SB(10), CS(8), .279 Avg
  • A. Vizcaino 8IP 4H 0R 0BB 7K 2.73 ERA

Braves pitching prospects put up some fantastic performances tonight. In his last 3 games Arodys Vizcaino put up this line: 23.2IP 12H 0ER 0BB 21K. That is pretty fantastic. The only thing I can really nitpick at is flyball rate which has been escalating recently (3 GB vs 13 FB tonight). Other than that he has easily filled the shoes of recently promoted Julio Teheran.

I’ve been waiting to see this young man in action,I seen he was on the DSL Braves roster, will he start there or is this just for now until later.

I figured he'd be on the DSL roster

Until they can get his visa issues worked out.

they start play today...

I figured Yasser Gomez might play a week or so for them until he gets stuff squared away, but he isn’t on the roster so I’d assume he’s already cleared and stateside.
Here is the DSL roster…
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ros&cid=605
I didn’t realize Danny Tartabull’s dad, Jose Tartabull (who also had a nice MLB career), was the manager down there.
Almost all of the Tenerife signings are there—OFs Ruben Rijkhof (18) and Deion Galvon (17) and 17 year old Cs Victor Velazquez and Roberto Machado. The only one missing is SS Alejandro Sanchez.
They also have a 16 year old righty from Panama, Abraham Espinosa and a 16 year old OF, Erick Maldonado from Venezuela.
Members still on the roster from last year—
1B Aris Alacantra—on the roster for his third go round. None of the first two look like much stat wise.
LF Felix Marte—same as Alacantra
2B Gerardo Reyes—Small 19 yo middle infielder that did very little offensively last year
SS Ronald Luna—The only positional player not born in the 1990s (82?!, almost has to be a typo since just 3 others were born in the 80s, all 3 are pitchers with 2 in 89 and one in 88)—Numbers also make him look like not much, especially if 82 isn’t a mistake
C Carlos Gimenez—Had a solid 69 at bats last year (.319 avg, not much power though)
3B Carlos Franco—Numbers don’t look like much, but he played a lot at 17 and may start to produce more now that he’s 18
C Luis Guzman—His third time on the roster, and the first two saw little playing time, while this time he’s listed as a “reserve”.
C Anthony Nunez—Has played more than Guzman the last two years, but his numbers are pretty bad
C Ricardo Perez—The roster has a lot of Cs on it, so it’ll be interesting to see how playing time gets divided up amongst them, listed as a reserve though. His numbers don’t look special, But it was only 4 games worth at 17, we’ll see what the 18 yr old Panamian can do in round 2. (he’s about 5 months younger than fellow countryman Christian Bethancourt, to give you an idea of how impressive the Rome C is).
OF Hector Garcia—Another of the Francouer variety, not good stats but he at least plays a lot, which for a team full of teenagers isn’t bad
OF Fredy Gamboa—Went to the plate 7 times in 2 games last year for the DSL squad; results were 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.
P Rafael Briceno—Had a decent 14 games/17 innings at age 18 last year.
P Oriel Caciedo—Had a good ERA over 13 innings last year at 18, but gave up 13 walks
P Eduardo Castillo—Had a lot of innings last year, but gave up a lot of hits and a high ERA
P Ignacio Geronimo—Nothing special
P Amable Nin—More innings than Ignacio, but not that impressive either
P Henry Mendez—Only 8 innings, but other than the walks the #s look nice, although he’s among the few non-90s born players on the roster
P Carlos Torres—Got roughed up in 08, but did a lot better last year.

P Rafael Javier—Listed as a reserve, missed 09 (possibly due to injury) but had 50 decent innings for the DSL squad in 2008

I always love how they have like 90 guys on their roster. And Jose Tartabull is super nice. I keep trying to convince him to get Danny to come coach with the Braves (mostly for the selfish reason that I’d like to get his autograph). He hasn’t been successful yet but he says Danny has been coming around to the idea.

This isn't the updated roster

The kids from Spain are on the updated one.

Huh? I mentioned 4 of the 5---

OFs Rijkhof and Galvan, plus Cs Velazquez and Machado?

Oh Arodys

how sexy, I loooooooove our pitching prospects, this is getting insane. Gonna have a quite a few in the top 100 by the end of the year.

We could have 5 in the top 50.at this rate

JT, Arodys, Delgado, Lopez…..maybe?, who else?

Minor, Mike

I don’t think Lopez gets into the top 50 this year, until his starts begin getting stretched out a bit.

Lopez is the one that would be a real stretch.

But the other four, it would be terribly unreasonable. Minor’s terrible last outing hurt his overall numbers, but he’ll have plenty of time to do some cosmetic on them before the season is over. The ridiculous strikeout numbers he’s putting up-well, they’re more impressive than Strasburg’s, even though he’s not limiting his walks as well as Strasburg. If he can start finding the strikezone a bit more, he’ll take a slight hit to his K-rate but it will really help his overall pitching line.

As for JT, barring something crazy happening (knock on wood) he should be top ten at season’s end. Randall Delgado needs to be considered a better prospect than Arodys at this point, though no fault of Arodys. It’s early, but he’s younger than Vizcaino while putting up better numbers at a higher level. Compare what he’s doing at age 20 to what Tommy Hanson did at age 20. He started at a higher level, he’s putting up better numbers so far than Tommy did while at Rome. And he hasn’t walked anyone in a long time.

Arodys, if he keeps performing, will obviously garner plenty of top-59 attention. As a former Yankees prospect he’s been extra-hyped, especially since he was a key cog in a big trade. He was already 69 at preseason, and he’s done nothing to hurt his status. He should be a top 50 lock.

Nice to have so much depth.

Would NOT be terribly unreasonable.

Delgado is actually 9 months older than Vizcaino.

I must have gotten their birthdays mixed up-I had it the other way around in my head.

vizcaino also hasn’t walked a man in 30 innings.

It’s funny I actually meant freeman there in the top 50 and not lopez but scouts are raving.about him. I read yesterday from a scout who said he preferred lopez over vizcaino.

Oh, and suck it Frank Wren haters

Yep.

Chris Resop!

Congradulations Todd Redmond!!

Whether or not he pans out in the big leagues, throwing a AAA no-hitter is an amazing accomplishment. Atta boy! Great job!

I wonder

When Delgado will go to AA.

Way to go Todd Redmond!!!

coincidentally, the 2 walks he gave up were to Corky Miller (haha) and Chris Burke…Then he struck out Burke to end the game. GREAT JOB!

Haha

Nice screenname.

Congrats to Redmond.

At least he’ll always have his moment of glory now, no matter where his career goes from here.

Arodys, you are lookin’ pretty damn sexy. At this rate, you’ll probably get the bump up to Myrtle Beach by the end of June. Maybe sooner.

Trade Redmond now! lol

WTG Todd Redmond

As always, this is my favorite listing. I love to follow our young stars of the future!
Minor, Delgado, Teherean & Vizcaino are going to be ready about the time Huddy, Lowe & KK’s contracts areup…The future is bright!!!
Keep up the great work Yondaime!
