It was all working for the Braves in this one. Even the 77 minute rain delay helped the Braves get into the Marlins bullpen quicker -- and the Braves love facing opponents' bullpens.
The Braves got ahead in the first inning on a Jason Heyward triple followed by a Chipper Jones double. The Fish clawed back with another two-out run in the bottom half of the inning. But the Braves went ahead for good in the fourth inning with some two-out magic of their own, scoring twice, even Hudson had a single. Hudson gave up a rain-assisted run and loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but pitched his way out of it before the tarp came on the field.
Hudson almost convinced Bobby Cox to send him back out to the mound after the lengthy rain delay, but Bobby thought better of it and called on his bullpen. It was the right move, as the Atlanta pen allowed only one unearned run through the final five innings.
The Florida pen was not as good, allowing five more runs in their five innings of work. Former Braves prospect Dan Meyer -- the key piece of the trade that brought Tim Hudson to Atlanta -- was hit up for three runs, including a bases loaded walk. All told in his one inning of work, Meyer issued five walks, which led to some good insurance runs for the Braves.
It was a good day for several Braves batters, starting with Yunel Escobar, who had his second consecutive multi-hit game, and seems to be coming out of his post-injury funk. Melky Cabrera also continues his hot hitting, as he has compiled a .435 batting average in his last 10 games, raising his average from .193 to .235. Even Chipper Jones had two hits. And of course, Martin Prado continues his hot hitting out of the leadoff spot with three hits.
Brian McCann sat out the game with a strained right quad. He is optimistic about returning to the lineup Friday night.
It was a good win for the Braves, as they take the series from the Marlins. Now we need to stay hot as the two teams from Pennsylvania come to town.
UPDATE 9am:
Dan Meyer was so bad against Atlanta, and has been so bad this season, that the Marlins designated him for assignment today and will recall Jorge Sosa to take his spot in the bullpen. Hilarious.

Great win.
I see the Mets are hot right now. 5 in a row. Tight division all around. Can this be considered one of the toughest after the AL East?
taney71 - May 28, 2010
we're in the NL East

The AL East
is stronger at the top but weaker at the bottom. You could make a case for the NL East as the toughest top-to-bottom division. Not sure I would, but still.
Jacob Peterson - May 28, 2010
As of 5/28/10, I absolutely would. Every team in the division is at .500 or better.
Whether the same could be said by October remains to be seen.
UMDBHIK - May 28, 2010
J-Hey's triple should've been an inside-the-park HR
He thought that ball was hit out of the park (and it certainly would’ve been gone in every park except this dump in Miami) so he was going into a light jog when rounding 1st base. If he would’ve run full speed from the start it would’ve been an ITP HR. When Maybin finally picked up the ball, Heyward was standing on third looking confused. He twirled his finger in the air and asked Snitker “that didn’t go out?”
RehabReject - May 28, 2010
I can’t blame a guy for htting one 430 ft and thinking that it was a HR

i'm so glad to be done with dolphin land shark pro player sun life stadium
dumb dimensions, dumb weather, glad the bravos are heading home to the ted
atl192485 - May 28, 2010
I don't know...
…an inside the parker would’ve been stretching it. Maybin is fast and has a good arm, and he had definitely already picked the ball up and had it on its way in before Heyward reached third. I did see him slow up before rounding second, but he didn’t slow up THAT much (not trying to quibble with everything, but it was certainly a heck of a lot faster than a light jog).
hailtogeorgia - May 28, 2010
He did slow down a bit
but the ITPHR would have been sketchy anyway. You don’t take that kind of risk with 1 out in the inning, or in the first inning. Besides, he scored. No harm done.
Jacob Peterson - May 28, 2010
4-2 road trip. Not bad at all.

The Melkman Delivers!
ATLBraves22 - May 28, 2010
Also worth noting
The braves are tied with the yankees in MLB for most road games played to date at 27. They have played 19 home games. 13-6 at home …
fphjr01 - May 28, 2010
this is a reason to be optimistic
but if there’s a reason not to, it’s a pretty brutal interleague schedule: rays, twins, tigers
atl192485 - May 28, 2010
I would rather play this lineup of AL teams vs. the last two years facing Red Sox, Yankees, and Blue Jays. That part of the season would usually be the point when the Braves go on a terrible losing streak.
romone_braves91 - May 28, 2010
Why...
did Wagner pitch the in the 9th?
mdhenshaw - May 28, 2010
My guess is everyone else in the pen had gone already.
UMDBHIK - May 28, 2010
He hasn't worked much lately
And most everyone else is overworked. So it made sense.
Jacob Peterson - May 28, 2010
Wags pitched on Wednesday and now last night. That is two days in a row which leaves him with only one day of work left for the weekend series.
romone_braves91 - May 28, 2010
We’re playing the Pirates.
He shouldn’t be needed.
UMDBHIK - May 28, 2010
Keyword “shouldn’t” but he might be needed. Outside of Saito and Wags, who do you trust in the pen to get the last 3 outs (remember Moylan has been used a lot as well)?
romone_braves91 - May 28, 2010
I’m in the camp that I trust our BP a lot. Venters is excellent. If we have a big lead, I don’t mind going with the new guy.
Braves Biceps - May 28, 2010
Didn't we also send Badenhop down too?
bpk228480 - May 28, 2010
mmmhmmmm
TCfromDubVee - May 28, 2010
WTF are the Marlins turning into the Royals?
and keep winning 2 of 3 boys. Just win the series, again and again and again.
Mr. Sanchez - May 28, 2010
By Using Simply Logic
Mets have gained 5 games on the Phillies in 5 days. Not bad progress. SWEEP THE BUCS!!!
Nova Scotia Steve - May 28, 2010
Excellent win,
and another road series win (3 in a row!). Also, the first intra-division series win (that took forever). This team is really going good right now—let’s hope we can keep it going against the Buccos and Phillies. 1st place is within reach!
Jacob Peterson - May 28, 2010
Good Win
The bottom of the 4 inning was the most ridiculous inning I have seen in a long time. I am still amazed that Hudson pulled off the impossible by pitching in that monsoon with virtually no grip on the ball and with no safe landing after the follow through on his pitches. With the bases loaded score 3-2 and pitching to Fish batter with the count 3-0, Hudson battled back and won by causing the hitter to popout to CF. This particular moment in the game is the reason why Hudson is the ace of the staff.
romone_braves91 - May 28, 2010
That inning made me angry as a baseball fan. I was thinking of what if someone got hurt just because the umps wanted to give the Fish every possible chance to go ahead. Huddy could have beaned a guy and cause serious damage at the plate because he had no idea at times where the ball was going. Wouldn’t that have been tragic?
I felt sorry for him having to keep his composure in that horrid situation. He was forced to throw his fastball and the hitters knew that, thus why the bases got full. His stats didn’t deserve the hit(s) either. I am still in awe of him getting out of that.
Huge respect points added to his already large sum from me last night.

At least make the Marlins pitch a half inning in that weather.
TradeAndruw - May 28, 2010
THIS
I was more than a little miffed that they didn’t make Nolasco try to pitch through that as well. Bullshit.
J-Freak - May 28, 2010 via mobile
and according to advanced stats...
those guys he left on base were the product of pure luck, no skill involved at all. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigggggggggghhhhhhhht.

I vote Huddy MVP, no contest -- getting out of the 4th like that was a miracle!
skymuse - May 28, 2010
Nice...
Seeing the update and a comment made in this thread, we knocked one and maybe two of their bullpen guys back down to the minors. In a weird, twisted sort of way, that has to feel kinda good. Haha.
XBEARDX - May 28, 2010
isn't the first time
a team has shuffled their BP when/after we play them. didn’t the d-backs make BP personnel changes after we played them?
atl192485 - May 28, 2010
yes, they DFA’ed Blaine Boyer and Bob Howry right after our series against them.

You actually quacked at your teacher?
kreese555 - May 28, 2010
I was surprised at how many people were on the OT at nearly midnight last night (eastern time). We have no lives, but that’s ok! And the Marlin’s OT had 60 comments. Pathetic.
