Aw man. As much as I despise the Fish when we’re playing them, I really do feel bad for them. They deserve a better fanbase. As much as I think Atlanta neglects the Braves, this is far, far worse.
I feel bad for teams who can’t fill the stands. I love watching baseball no matter who is playing. Even though I boycotted the Richmond Flying Squirrels the first few weeks I have been to a couple games in the past week. I enjoyed them, but with a small resentment because I never saw people come out to support the Richmond Braves like they are doing the FS!
The funny thing is that after the first week the few times I’ve been up there I’ve seen the same tiny crowds as before. At the end of the day it’s still the same crappy stadium with a team that has an affiliate nobody cares about (Giants). I will say it’s nice that the people who work there realized this and relaxed after that first week; they were treating the worst park in AA like it was the Major Leagues there for a bit.
I went on a Saturday night and that place was packed! I sat up in the damn mini nosebleeds. Then i went on a Tuesday and it wasn’t packed but filled for an overcast night. Your right about the stadium. They say you couldn’t fill the old stadium why should we build you a new one. MAYBE, because people didn’t want to fuck with horrible parking and a almost century old stadium.
Actually, the stadium was built in 1986. And, at the time, it was state of the art.
Yeah, you can’t judge any place on a Saturday night, you gotta check out the weekdays. But that’s good to know you went on a Tuesday and they were doing OK. I’ve been up 3 times and it’s been pretty sparse.
I took the VFYS last night from the 12th row…and the crowd did trickle in a bit late, but Tuesday nights are always the least-attended night of the week (unless the Yankees or Mets are in town.) A local radio station (790 AM) is running a summer-long promo for any advanced ticket sale for a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night (or day) game for…wait for it…$7.90 a pop. So, I’m sitting in a primo seat that cost more than my luke-warm beer. But I ain’t complainin’…that’s a good deal in any city. Plus, the weather is hot, but not quite jungle-Vietnam hot down here…so good times. I’ll be there again tonight.
I went to see the Marlins about ten years ago in what was then Joe Robbie Stadium. It’s definitely built for football, so it’s going to look half empty even when the Marlins draw a big crowd. That said, they only drew about 15,000, and that was the team that eventually won the World Series. The new stadium will just make the small crowds look bigger. I really don’t think a new stadium is the answer.
That a team who has won two title in 15 years can’t put more people in the seats. I can’t believe they convinced anyone to pay for a new stadium for the Fish.
40K or so seats aren’t sold for baseball as the capacity for football is over 75K…Thus, a lot of empty seats are guaranteed, even in sell-outs…
Fenway Park seats arount 37,000, so selling out and looking full is easier than in Florida’s stadium…so far this year Florida is actually ahead of Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Oakland, Cleveland and Toronto in percentage of seats sold at 47.4 (and just behind Washington, Cincy, and Zona)…Not great, but not the worst…
FWIW, Atlanta is only 17th and only draws an average of 57% capacity per game…This disappoints me as we have less than 30K attend nightly…
I’m sure there will be some decent crowd for the first few months…but the novelty will wear off fairly quickly. I’ll go to a game or two…but I avoid driving into Miami-Dade county like the plague. And the new site is located where the Orange Bowl used to be. It’s a crappy neighborhood…but I guess they’re building parking decks with direct access to the park.
On another note…why don’t some of these pitchers ever tip their caps anymore? Anibel Sanchez pitched well, got relieved, got a standing ovation from the crowd that was there, and didn’t tip his lid. That’s part of the decorum of the game that seems to be dying…or is it a Latin thing? Thoughts…
Photos of empty stadium…I am assuming the “ovation” consisted of the annoying guys yelling in the background of the game broadcast…He probably didn’t hear them for he wasn’t watching his exit on TV…
But you’re right, if there was an ovation, he should’ve acknowledged the fans…Heck, if they want people to show up, they need to interact more, not less…
Son: "Hey Dad, can we go see the Marlins tonight? Puhhlleeaasee?

Thanks for the correction. I thought I had read in a baseball stadium book that it was built in the 1920’s. Way off on my part.

I live fairly close to Cincy, and I’ve been to a few Reds games before. The upper decks are completely empty.
