Ahh, the annual appearance of Gregor Blanco. As always we hope it's a short appearance. The Braves put outfielder Brent Clevlen on the disabled list today with a sprained right toe, and recalled outfielder Gregor Blanco from triple-A Gwinnett.
Blanco has actually been the G-Braves hottest hitter lately. He's hit .364 in his last 9 games, hitting safely in all 9 of them, and raising his season average to .294. Perhaps we'll get lucky and he's stay hot and contribute some of that to the Atlanta Braves lineup... let's just make sure we get him back to the minors before the stink sets in.
Clevlen was 1-for-4 in 3 games, including one start.

Hopefully
Hopefully he can continue his hot hitting and give us more speed on the basepaths. Good luck to him.

Why the hate for Blanco?
He’s not good but he’s a Brave.
taney71 - May 25, 2010
Agreed.
Real shame about Clevlen though: that was a nice catch —jumping laterally and catching it on the fly looked impressive.
John Drake number 6 - May 25, 2010
Agreed
Blanco is actually one of the players I really root for along with Diaz. They are the kinds of players hat would probably be starting on a weaker team (Pirates, Nationals, Astros, etc.) but will never be given a real shot with the Braves.
sag969 - May 26, 2010
Brent Clevlen, we hardly knew ye.
Flash forward 15 days: “Braves reserve outfielder Brent Clevlen has been activated off the 15 day disabled list and outrighted to AAA Gwinnett.”
10-4 - May 25, 2010
Harsh
Blanco seems like a solid backup outfielder that adds speed to a team that doesn’t have much of it. As long as he doesn’t find his way into a starting role (knock of wood), I don’t mind him on the team as a pinch runner/defensive replacement.
McLouth Maniac - May 25, 2010
has he been that bad?
his avg was low but he had decent (furcal like) obp
i like him coming up.
i mean if he takes nates job realy, what are we losing?
speed nope

Blanco gets on base at a decent rate
Assuming he’s still got the patience to take a walk, which it seems he can do at AAA. So he’ll fit in the big league club, which walks more than anyone.
Bronn - May 25, 2010
I think Blanco is a good call up right now, except for the fact that he’s a left handed hitter. We have a lot of lefties already and we don’t hit lefties particularly well either, so that’s the only downside to this. I could see Cox giving him a start in Center sometime in this series just to get him some AB’s…and batting him leadoff.
Dave_D - May 25, 2010
This team has been playing way too good
to talk about batting Gregor Blanco in this series
pharmongsu - May 25, 2010
I like it, he has been on a hot streak lately. Maybe he will bring it with him!:) I understand Gondee’s pessimism though. We have seen Blanco, we know what we are getting. An almost capable Fourth OF’er. I like him, seems to have but I still think my statement is true.

Blanco were right-handed. That’s what we really need our 5th OF to be.
Jacob Peterson - May 25, 2010
I guess they didn't think Matt Young was ready...
and this move calls into doubt if Mitch Jones will ever get his chance. He’s been slugging great, but really struggling to get on base.
Mr. Sanchez - May 25, 2010
I figured Mitch would come up when the roster expands
TheBravestWay To Block A Decent Prospect - May 25, 2010
Matt Young hits lefty.
cbwilk - May 26, 2010
Blanco again, Good Grief another Cox favorite.
Whatever happened to the “strike out king himself” Mitch Jones ?? Why not give him a shot I mean we already know what Blanco brings to the table which is next to nothing. Granted he has some speed but his bat is awful; oh he torn it up in AAA ? It is AAA who cares ? Wait until C. Resop gets recall and we will all see what exactly being a great AAA player truly means, lol.
Still if Blanco is the best you can find I guess you could do worse.
Holty_Panthers_Fan - May 25, 2010
Bringing Blanco up makes sense. He will probably not get many at bats, but is available as a late inning defensive replacement, pinch runner, etc. We need to keep the other guys playing regularly.
I think we are in a contractual bind with Resop and either have to call him up or risk losing him.
DawgB - May 25, 2010
I happen to like Gregor. Here’s to hoping he plays like the beginning games of the WBC Where he ripped up

Corey Johnson is in Double A has mammoth right handed power led Double A in HRS last season and is again this season
Could we just cut Blanco and bring another player up to triple A to get some seasoning. Blanco will never be a Major League Player. He has no gap power and contact is below average. If you are this desperate for speed then go sign a veteran with speed because they are many guys sitting at home looking for a contract who have produced in the Big Leagues for us to be wasting bench space with Gregor. We have a guy who led Double A in Homers last season and is doing it again this year. He strikes out a ton but when he makes contact good things happen. He is projected to be a .240 hitter with 40 HR’s and 100 plus RBI in the Bigs. Why not move him up to Triple A and cut Blanco for good after this two week call up. Anyone who kinda likes Blanco or is ok with him getting called up has really been beat down by this ownership group into acceptting Mediocre. Did I mention that Corey Johnson is a right handed outfielder? 40 plus homeruns from the right side? The Braves are taking it to slow with Corey and they are slowing his progress by leaving him at Double A again this year. The story I heard is from the Manager at Mertle Beach who said he has been there since the 80 ties and that Corey has more raw power as in Tape measure home runs than any player who has came through double A here in the last 30 years and he named Strawberry, BigMac and a others as guys Corey has more power than at this stage in Double A. Look him up and you will see he hit 36 HRs last year and alot of double and drove in alot of runs and struck out 200 times. There are guys striking out this much in the majors right now who will not hit 40 HRs and once again this guy is right handed!!!!!
Brickstonethebone - May 25, 2010
Johnson stikes out way too much.
Let’s leave him in AA until he cuts down on the Ks.
DawgB - May 25, 2010
In case you didn't hear him correctly...
while you were sucking on his balls, his name is Cody.
-C
cthabeerman - May 25, 2010
Plus, he's not right handed, and wasn't in AA last year...
but other than those mistakes, and “Mertle”, wait, did the guy get anything right?.

2 questions...
1. Who the hell is Corey Johnson?
2. If you’re talking about Cody Johnson, he’s left handed.

TheBravestWay To Block A Decent Prospect - May 25, 2010
Um, his name is Cody Johnspon, he bats left handed and he didn’t lead AA in HR’s last year, he led high A in HR’s. Know the facts before you post my friend.

theres a guy here in philly who strikes out at an alraming rate but hits a ton of homers, u may have heard of em? ryan howard?? dude set the record for K’s few years ago although he was outdone by reynolds i think.. point is: strikeouts are sometimes better then what could be a double play ball or something. Braves need power from the right side n greg white sure aint the answer

Ryan Howard?
Yeah, he looked great today when we beat the Phils and took over 1st place in the NL East. :)

Could Be Gregor's Last Shot
That’s if he gets any playing time of course – which if Clevlen gets a start – you’d have to think Blanco will at least get one or two.
Nova Scotia Steve - May 25, 2010
And, if he does well enough, who knows??
Package him up with a couple other players and ship him off for a slight upgrade somewhere. I don’t foresee him in any of our long-term plans, but maybe if he does well enough some team like the Royals might find some use in him and Resop (Podsednik??).

I’m happy to see Blanco get the call-up. Maybe Melky will get a JoJo-like DL trip soon.
Rhyno18 - May 25, 2010
Rules question
Does Blanco have to be DFA’d to get him off the major league roster?
Always liked Blanco…the at-bats in 2008 where he’d foul about eight balls in a row in the left field stands between home plate and third base were great. We’re obviously better off with him in AAA but he always fought for the next pitch.
