Christian Bethancourt raised his batting average 25 points this week.
This week the Braves' affiliates combined to go 13-16 with Gwinnett going 2-5, Mississippi going 4-3, Myrtle Beach going 2-5, and Rome going 5-3.
Who's Hot?
Matt Young - 12-27, 3 2B, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, BB, SB - Young had more hits than any other Braves farmhand this week, rapping out a .444 average and a 1.205 OPS. He's not known for his pop, but he hit for the cycle for the week, slugging a cool .741. He also played several games at second base, increasing his versatility.
Arodys Vizcaino - 2-0, 15.2 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 8 H, 14 K - A 0.00 ERA, a 0.51 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts compared to 0 walks say everything about how good Vizcaino was this week. About the only knock on him is that he isn't striking out a ton of guys, but that's a minor concern considering his control and effectiveness.
Christian Bethancourt - 11-23, 2B, HR, 5 RBI, SB - Bethancourt broke out of an extended slump in a big way this week, hitting at a .478 clip with a 1.130 OPS. It's also highly encouraging that he only struck out once the whole week.
Julio Teheran - 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 12 K - It's hard to make the Hot Sheet when you only make 1 start, but when it's as good at Teheran's was it's hard to leave him off. He dominated a veteran Winston-Salem lineup, striking out hitters at a 15.4 K/9 rate. He's putting himself into elite prospect status with every start.
Honorable Mentions: Jose Ortegano, Gregor Blanco, Barbaro Canizares, Freddie Freeman, Mike Dunn, Gwinnett; Scott Diamond, Willie Cabrera, Randy Gress, Donell Linares, Mike Minor, Brandon Beachy, Mississippi; Cole Miles, Samuel Sime, JJ Hoover, Randall Delgado, Yeliar Castro, Brett Oberholtzer, Myrtle Beach; Myke Jones, Cory Harrilchak, Robby Hefflinger, Jake Hanson, Jordan Kreke, Robinson Lopez, Rome
Who's Not ?
Jordan Schafer 3-22, RBI, 2 BB, 5 K - Schafer's return to AAA hasn't started well, as he hit just .136 with a .310 OPS this week. He's still trying to get back to form after injuring his wrist, so we'll all just need to be patient with him for a while.
Jeff Lyman 2 G, 4.1 IP, 6 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, K - It was a rough week for Lyman, who sported a 12.47 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP. Those are some bad, bad numbers. He was unscored upon in his previous 4 appearances, so this is likely just a hiccup in his season.
Cody Johnson 3-18, RBI, 4 BB, 11 K, SB - Johnson made the Who's Hot? side last week, but this week he went cold again, striking out in half of his plate appearances for the week, while he hit just .167 with a .485 OPS. You have to like the 4 walks, but the strikeouts, which it seemed like he had under control, and the lack of power are troubling.
Todd Redmond 0-1, 11 IP, 8 ER, 14 H, 2 BB, 8 K - Redmond has been solid at AA and AAA for the Braves the last 2 years, but he's had some hard times here recently, throwing up a 6.54 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP for the week. He's a pitcher who gets buy on guts and guile, but right now he's not fooling anyone.
Dishonorable Mentions: Mitch Jones, Brandon Hicks, Tim Gustafson,Gwinnett; Jacob Thompson, Mississippi; Gerardo Avila, Matt Kennelly, Luis Sumoza, Ryan Barba, Mike Daniel, Angelo Paulino, Gerry Rodriguez, Yoel Campusano, Armando Zazueta, David Francis, Myrtle Beach; Kyle Rose, Matt Weaver, LV Ware, Rome
Vizcaino
“and 14 walks compared to 0 strikeout say everything about how good Vizcaino was this week”
Whoops
ATLandUNC - May 24, 2010
Whoops indeed. And strikeout wasn’t even plural. Good catch.
cbwilk - May 24, 2010
For a 19 year old to have that kind of control is amazing. 2012 and beyond is shaping up to be mid 90s-esque.
ATLandUNC - May 24, 2010
Agreed
That is why I am back up to a 10 in the confidence poll.
DawgB - May 24, 2010
Vizcaino.....
Just got named SAL pitcher of the week. I made a fanshot with a link.
rbravesfan - May 24, 2010
It’s gonna be a shame when Hanson is wearing Yankee pinstripes.
Bronn - May 24, 2010
Anything other than a Braves uni would simply melt off cyborg Hanson’s body..
Am I doing it right?
bwellnjonesco - May 24, 2010
Adam Milligan
He has been disabled since May 3rd. Does anyone know the nature of his injury?
Van Pope
Has it be noted here that the Pelicans released him on Saturday?
fandave - May 24, 2010
aww, poor Van…
bwellnjonesco - May 24, 2010
The Van Pope story is right below this one on the main page. Adam hurt his shoulder diving for a ball the second week of the season and it’s been nagging him ever since. This is why his numbers tanked after the first week. Hopefully it will heal with more rest and he’ll be back soon.
cbwilk - May 24, 2010
Sorry to not read down the page – pretty lame.
fandave - May 24, 2010
I always look forward to these
Nice to see Bethancourt improve his average. In a perfect world, he becomes a stud catcher and we either deal him or BMac for a boatload of talent to set us up for years to come.
Scott Coleman - May 24, 2010
or move BMac to 1B
If, for some reason, we need a first baseman.
Jacob Peterson - May 24, 2010
annd
if Freeman becomes a stud then do we deal B-Mac or Bethancourt?
drumzalicious - May 24, 2010
I like how
practically every Myrtle Beach hitter is on the “dishonorable mention” list. I really wish we had some better hitting prospects outside of Freeman. At least Myke Jones and Bethancourt have been hitting a bit better; they’re probably the two other guys most likely to be above-average regulars, and we need them to keep hitting.
Jacob Peterson - May 24, 2010
Anyone else think
that the team should have taken its time with Schafer?
The guy hasn’t played baseball in about a year and they thrust him in to AAA? I would have thought he would have climbed up like a prospect or something and not seen AAA till August maybe.
drumzalicious - May 24, 2010
They did take their time with him, he played 10 games between Rome and Mississippi and played great, so they put him at the level he belongs, AAA. Right now, he’s a AAA player who needs to work on getting back to the majors; the best place for him to do that is in AAA. One bad week isn’t the end of the world. Heck, he had 2 hits today.
cbwilk - May 24, 2010
See Freeman, etc
struggling for a bit in AAA isn’t the end of the world.
