Sigh. This is one of those games that proves the old axiom that "you can't win 'em all." After all, sometimes, you've got to give the old guys (Chipper), the catchers (McCann), and the banged-up guys (Heyward) a day off. Sometimes, even excellent hitters will have horrific, 0/5 games (like Martin Prado did today). And sometimes, 40-year-old pitchers working for the fifth time in a week will give up a homer or two, as happened to Takashi Saito in the 10th today.
A lot of people will probably blame this game on Bobby Cox starting "the B team." But three of those guys--David Ross, Melky Cabrera, and Omar Infante--had good games. Sure, maybe Brent Clevlen shouldn't have started over Hinske, but 3 out of 4 isn't bad. The real problem with the offense was actually that the 4 regulars who played got completely shut down: Escobar, McLouth, Glaus, and Prado were a combined 1/18 with 0 BB, 4 K, and 2 DPs (both by Prado).
The Braves mustered very little offense off of Pirates starter Zach Duke (his second straight excellent start). The only run they scored off of Duke was on a David Ross single in the 2nd inning. Even that run was unearned because the man who scored (Yunel Escobar) had reached on an error. Duke gave up some hits but got 3 double plays to help his cause and did not walk anyone. His final line was 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R (0 earned), 0 BB, 5 K, and a 0.286 WPA.
While Duke undoubtedly pitched well, it should be noted that the Braves continue to struggle mightily against lefties. We really need Matt Diaz to come back soon and hit lefties like he has in the past. If Yunel could start hitting, that would help too.
Braves starter Kris Medlen also pitched very well, taking a shutout in to the 6th inning before running out of gas. He gave up 2 runs in that inning as Andrew McCutchen tripled, Steve Pearce hit a sac fly to drive him in, and Ryan Doumit drove in Garrett Jones with an RBI single. Bobby Cox had to go to Jesse Chavez to finish the inning. Still, Medlen's line is pretty decent: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K, and a -0.046 WPA (losing a 1-run lead kills your WPA).
More recap and Awards after the jump.

The Braves tied the game when Eric Hinske hit a mammoth pinch-hit homer off of Evan Meek to start the 8th inning, but would not get another hit for the rest of the game (though they did walk 3 times). In both the 9th and 10th, a Braves hitter struck out with the go-ahead run on 2nd base (Ross in the 9th, Prado in the 10th).
The Braves bullpen pitched well until Saito left a pitch up in the zone to Doumit. Chavez, Jonny Venters, Peter Moylan, and Eric O'Flaherty all pitched pretty decently. Even Saito got the first 2 men he faced on a strikeout and a foul popup. But playing on the road in the late innings, you're always 1 pitch away from losing, and that eventually came back to bite the Braves.
Still, we won another series. The Phillies lost, too, so we're only 3.5 out of first. We've got an off day tomorrow before a big series in Florida. Heyward (who did not start today due to a sore thumb but drew a walk as a pinch-hitter) should be good to go then. If we can win that series, we'll really be in good shape.
Co-MVPs: Duke (stat line above) and Doumit-- 3/5, HR, 2B, R, 2 RBI, and a whopping 0.635 WPA
LVPs: So many to choose from. Saito, obviously-- 0.2 IP, R, K, with a -0.364 WPA; and Prado-- 0/5, K, 2 GIDP, -0.248 WPA; Glaus, McLouth, Clevlen, and Escobar were also all "deserving."
MVPILEs: Hinske-- game-tying pinch-hit homer, 0.250 WPA; and the bullpen except for Saito-- 3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB (it was intentional), 3 K, and 1 HBP
Clutch Play: Doumit's homer, obviously (0.465 WPA)
Unclutch Plays: The bottom 5 WPA plays were all by Braves hitters, but the 2 worst were the Ross and Prado strikeouts to end the 9th and 10th innings (-0.103 and -0.114 WPA, respectively).

Well, I have about six episodes of Stargate Universe to watch…I guess I could do some work on Monday maybe. I really hate off days though.
Rhyno18 - May 23, 2010
seriously…
Smoltz's Beard - May 24, 2010
At least, Old Guy Chipper got an IBB in the top of the tenth.
As we know, his is a prolific walker.
This one was no. 1375 of his career and placed in a tie with Reggie Jackson for 29th on MLB’s all-time BB list.
25th with 1402 is Hank Aaron.
Also, Chipper’s next BB (no. 1376) will tie him with Eddie Matthews for 1st as the Braves’ all-time BB list. (Hammerin’ Hank is 3rd).

oh wow
thats a pretty neat milestone

The Pacific tonight and America: The Story of How Bank of America Caused Every Single Awesome Thing In America’s History tomorrow. Plus homework.
I’ll get by.

Ha! I like the jab at BoA.
TheLetter2 - May 23, 2010
This is the most true assessment of the show I have read.
tcstew - May 23, 2010
haha
Yeah, I shudder to think about what this country would be like if we didn’t have the Bank of America to rescue us all those times. :)
dunnytwogloves - May 24, 2010
So depressed The Pacific is over.
Smoltz's Beard - May 24, 2010
Pretty screwy line up today, but it made sense if you dug into it. McCann’s usual Sunday off after a night game. Chipper getting 2 days rest before a 20 game stretch starts Tuesday. Hinske not starting vs a lefty. Heyward out with a sore thumb, plus facing a lefty.
The only change I might have made would be giving Escobar the day off too and starting Conrad. Winning 5 straight and winning the series gave Cox a choice to roll the dice with a “different” line up. They were good enough to take it to 10 innings, too bad, a win would have been huge. Prado’s struggles were the worst. Is he a “night” player.
bighop - May 23, 2010
on the bright side
does anyone have the “Heyward I Came” pie in the face image. I need it for a poker avatar.
MacsGlasses - May 23, 2010
i think you mean .286 WPA for duke, not WHIP
atl192485 - May 23, 2010
You are correct sir.
Fixed.
Jacob Peterson - May 23, 2010
Boy, do I hate the A’s.

Tough Game To Lose
I thought we may steal that one when Hinske tied it in the 8th. But our offense just wasn’t there today.
Too bad. Would have been nice to keep the winning streak going – but hey we won the series and have a big 3-gamer coming up with the Marlins. Here hoping for 2/3 from Florida.
Only thing that really stings is we missed a chance to gain a game on Philly. Like I say – ah well…Braves have been playing good ball for the most part…and that’s a positive.
PS
Anyone hear an update on Hanson after his dizzy spells last outing? I hear KK is ready to go and will pitch on Tuesday but I haven’t heard anything on Hanson
Nova Scotia Steve - May 23, 2010
Before the game today, in an interview Tommy said his stomach had been bothering him, but he feels better now.
tcstew - May 23, 2010
Dehydration due to a stomach virus
is fine now, he says.
HEYJUDE - May 23, 2010
Braves 23-21
Hey, we are 2 games above 500 and only 3.5 games back of those fools from up north. (I am going to attempt to go as long as I can without saying the name of the team from Pennsylvania. I think I can make it until all star weekend. Can you?) I’ll take 2 out of 3 especially since last night was practically a steal of a game in itself. What a great week for the Fabulous Bravos.
romone_braves91 - May 23, 2010
Who? The Phuckers?
I lose.
GoBravesNY - May 23, 2010
This makes me sad....
I missed the game today and just came to check TC for a Rainbow Llamasaurus. Alas, there is no Rainbow Llamasaurus for me…. :(
EricGreggWasPaidOff - May 23, 2010
With any luck
He ran over Bob Walk sometime today.
Sam Jethroe - May 23, 2010
Not Sure If You Watched The Game On Saturday
But it’s possible Eric Gregg was behind the plate – poor umping. Both sides argued a number of calls.
We were fortunate to win that game on Saturday now that i think about it.
Nova Scotia Steve - May 23, 2010
I didn’t see Saturday’s game, but I did hear it. I was on the OT for the entire rain delay, too. I just didn’t catch today’s game.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - May 23, 2010
I miss Llamasaurus
bravesforever16 - May 23, 2010
Glad Ske got the li'l fella off the hook
Meds taking a loss would’ve sucked.
It’s hard to win on the road, even against a bunch of jackalopes (McCutheon excepted…he’s nobody’s huckelberry.)
Fucking Orioles.
Sam Jethroe - May 23, 2010
No Josh Johnson for the Marlins series
I approve.
Scott Coleman - May 23, 2010 via mobile
EXCELLENT
I think we may miss Nolasco as well – or he pitches the final game. Not sure.
Nova Scotia Steve - May 23, 2010
Sanchez, Robertson and Nolasco
Scott Coleman - May 23, 2010 via mobile
Doesn’t Anibel Sanchez usually pitch well against us, though?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - May 23, 2010
Not sure, but he’s had a couple good starts in a row now.
Smoltz's Beard - May 24, 2010
Sanchez vs Los Bravos Career Stats
3-5 record, 4.71 ERA, 1.51 WHIP with the Braves batting .280.
His best year against us was 2006. Since then, we’ve hit him pretty well.
Cracker! - May 24, 2010
I think he's been hot and cold against us
But he has been pitching well of late and is 2-1 in his last three starts with two of those victories coming against the Cards and Mets….
3.28 ERA overall with a 3-2 record.
Nova Scotia Steve - May 23, 2010
Good news...
Arodys Vizcaino tore it up this afternoon.

This guy sounds alright.
romone_braves91 - May 23, 2010
That's 2 straight kick-ass starts for him.
Me likey
Jacob Peterson - May 23, 2010
I was at the game through the 7th and I confirm Arodys domination.
Not only did he have 9 Ks but he also had somewhere around 9 groundouts. Very impressive.
DogDaysofSummer - May 23, 2010
Ran into some trouble in the 6th and 8th though, but he got some help from his D.
DogDaysofSummer - May 23, 2010
To clarify, I left after Arodys got taken out.
Had a BBQ I had to help out with.
DogDaysofSummer - May 23, 2010
The bright side
is Medlen doing so well as a starter for us.
drumzalicious - May 23, 2010
fuck the verducci effect
update does anyone have the heyward pie in the face i came image? haha
MacsGlasses - May 23, 2010
Why don’t you just go look through the last few game threads for it?
Lennox - May 23, 2010
God Doumit. We should’ve won that game.
GoBravesNY - May 24, 2010 via mobile
I thought about being upset that we lost yesterday, but then i thought about the starting lineup, and i felt like for that to even be a close game was satisfying enough.
10-4 - May 24, 2010
The only thing that makes me mad is, with an off day Monday, why trot that bullshit lineup out on Sunday?
Rhyno18 - May 24, 2010
Yeah...
but this way they get a longer rest.
sddbaker - May 24, 2010
Are they that worn out?
10-4 - May 24, 2010
Anyone made a tasteless joke about Jose Lima’s wife yet?
TradeAndruw - May 24, 2010
assumed win
I feel like the team did not take that game seriously. They expected a sweep just like all us fans did, but Bobby put in some players who don’t typically start, so the outcome was not what was expected. Another day, another game; let’s hope Monday’s game goes well.
softballgirl33 - May 24, 2010
I guarantee
We won’t lose Monday!
