Gwinnett 2, Columbus 3
Matt Young, playing second base tonight, paced the G-Braves with a 3 hit night. The little guy is now 9 for his last 13 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in that span. People questioned Freddie Freeman's power after he only hit 8 home runs last season, but he's already collected 5 this season. Still, I maintain that he's a doubles hitter who manages to line a few out of the park. Of course, he's also a monster of a human and could develop 40 HR power. Chris Resop is possibly having the best season of his extensive career. Also, second baseman JC Holt has been released by the Braves and has signed with the Oakland Athletics.
Mississippi 4, Huntsville 5
Richard Sullivan started the game, but exited after facing just 4 batters. He was a little wild, walking 2 of the 4 he faced, but I have to believe he must have been injured. Ryne Reynoso came in for him and it was fortunate that he had been stretched out from his time starting for Gwinnett. He struck out 8 in his 5.2 innings of work, but was also saddled with the loss. Randy Gress continues to surprise, albeit still in somewhat limited playing time. But, for a guy who some TCers made into a running joke he's certainly showing more than many thought he was capable of.
Myrtle Beach 3, Winston-Salem 1
Cole Miles managed to get on base 3 times and he even threw out a runner attempting to turn a single into a double. And frankly, I find it surprising he could throw anyone out from the outfield, so good for him for making me look foolish. More importantly, the little guy is 6 for his last 14 with 5 walks in that span. Brett Oberholtzer had his best start yet for the Pelicans, striking out a batter per inning and only giving up one run on a homer to Justin Greene (who is almost 4 years older than him).
Rome 2, Hickory 3
Cory Harrilchak had an eventful day, collecting 2 hits, including a double, stealing a base, making a throwing error, and throwing a runner out at home. That's one way to fill up the box score. Cory Rasmus continues his solid work, despite picking up the loss. He gave up too many hits, but he didn't walk anyone and manged to let just one run cross the plate. When the Braves drafted him several years ago they thought they had a top arm on their hands; it's good to see that he's worked hard and come back strong from his arm injuries.

Quick question.
Anyone know who is pitching for Rome on Saturday or Sunday? I might go to one of those games in Hickory since I’ll be in the area?
DogDaysofSummer - May 21, 2010
Apparently I don't know if I will be in the area or not.
sigh
DogDaysofSummer - May 21, 2010
looking at their past few games...
I’d guess it goes…
FRI-Chris Master
SAT-Robinson Lopez
SUN-Arodys Vizcaino
Mr. Sanchez - May 21, 2010
argh
i wanna see Salcedo already.
Also Matt Young at 2B? interesting.
drumzalicious - May 21, 2010
Young
He actually was drafted as a 2B and has played some there over the years but he’s a better OF IMO but the Braves may want him to start learning the IF again so he can take over the super utility spot if they don’t resign Infante which I personally hope the resign him.
Jay212033 - May 21, 2010
Also Bill Shanks stated that
Salcedo is having visa issues again. He went back for family matters and now can get back. Baseball should have a far better system by now.
Jay212033 - May 21, 2010
Damn
Schafer is only hitting .174, I really want him to get it in gear.
Mighty Healthy - May 21, 2010
Well
At least Nate McLouth has started hitting so there’s no need to rush him.
Jay212033 - May 21, 2010
Chris Resop!
Bronn - May 21, 2010
Trade Bait!
Jay212033 - May 21, 2010
Doubt anyone would give us much for a journeyman guy like Resop. We’d be better served trading a younger guy as far as the return goes. Speaking of bullpen arms. Anyone know what happened to Scot Proctor? I know he was struggling early but havent heard anything from him recently. Is he still with the team?
chopc - May 21, 2010
I really don't doubt it
There are several teams out there looking for good BP help if we could get a C+ type prospect for him i’d be overjoyed.
Also Proctor is still in instructs building up his arm strength.
Jay212033 - May 21, 2010
No, I think he’s right. People don’t give up anything for guys like Resop. If anything a team would just offer to buy his contract.
cbwilk - May 21, 2010
with the amount of teams looking for help in their bullpen...
I have a hard time thinking we can’t pry a prospect (probably not a good one though) for one of the bulk of arms we’ve got floating around. Maybe not Resop, but perhaps Chavez or somebody. Perhaps someone gets desperate for Scott Diamond, I hear he’s real good.
Mr. Sanchez - May 21, 2010
I hear Alvaro Andres Pizza Varela is really interested in Diamond. Maybe he’ll give up his first-round pick in the upcoming draft.

If we can get something for Tyler Yates and Blaine Boyer
We can get something for Resop.
Jay212033 - May 21, 2010
See here on Resop, pretty interesting situation....
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/MLB-latest-news-from-May-042710
And for cb, JR House, who was shortly in Braves camp this spring, signed with the Mets
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/minor-league-transactions.html.
Mr. Sanchez - May 21, 2010
That’s interesting stuff. A lot of veteran minor leaguers have contracts like that. That’s why the Rays just promoted Hank Blalock.
Thanks for the news about JR. I had actually seen it, but still appreciated. They come to Norfolk in a week or so and it will be really nice to see him. He hasn’t been here since he was on the Tides.
cbwilk - May 21, 2010
the way that reads on Resop...
it would seem to almost kill any leverage we’d have to make a deal unless two or more teams wanted him. That is if anyone is looking to deal for a AAA starter like you say above, which isn’t often. Maybe the amount of teams in the market for pitching help is in our favor, but that seems pretty doubtful.
Mr. Sanchez - May 21, 2010
He’s having a good season. Might be worth bringing up for a few weeks if only to include him in a trade in late June or July. Sounds like if we don’t bring him up, we’ll lose him anyway. No clue what to do with him in the bigs, long relief? We have a great pen already. I’ve been assuming Wren will make a move or two in June/July, it would be a shame to lose Resop to his contract clause and another minor league arm to a trade.
bighop - May 21, 2010
Could easily call him up and send...
Kimbrel or another down (like Chavez if he still has options remaining).
Mr. Sanchez - May 21, 2010
That’s what I’m thinking. By calling him up, we might get something for him in a package with another player. As is, we might just lose him with nothing in return, and have to include another arm for a left fielder if that’s the trade Wren decides to do.
bighop - May 21, 2010
I would send Kimbrel down so he can get regular work closing in AAA and bring up Resop.
Mighty Healthy - May 21, 2010
very interesting. I didnt know he was only 27. I was thinking he was closer to 30.
chopc - May 21, 2010
He's been around for a while
But he started young. He was 22 when he made his MLB debut.
Bronn - May 21, 2010
What’s crazy is that he only started pitching when he was 20.
cbwilk - May 21, 2010
I’m hoping he gets a chance in the bigs soon. I think he could at least be a more than serviceable reliever.
chopc - May 21, 2010
word
Mighty Healthy - May 21, 2010
In my mind, I’ve always seen Freddie Freeman as a Billy Butler clone. Just a ton of doubles power that may one day turn into homers down the line.
Am I very far off in that thinking? I wouldn’t mind having a 21 year old version of Billy Butler manning 1B next season.
ATLandUNC - May 21, 2010
For me its hard to get a read on Freeman. I’d love it if he turned out to be like Billy Butler though I was a little concerned after last season that he might be more of a Casey Kotchman type. Looks like he is off to a pretty good start in the power department this year. I think at the end of the year we’ll know more about just what type of guy he projects to be.
chopc - May 21, 2010
Butler seems considerably shorter than Freeman...
by a good couple inches. Freeman could be a doubles guy, but with his size, he might just be one of those guys whose power develops last as they grow into their frame and develop old man strength.
Mr. Sanchez - May 21, 2010
Freeman has such an uppercut swing, he will eventually turn into a bit more of a home run hitter I feel like. He has a very sweet compact stroke to the ball and generates a lot of backspin like Heyward does. I think Freddie will easily be a 20-30 HR guy in the Majors once he finishes growing and learns to stop swinging at the pitches that are just going to end up as fly balls to the outfield. Either that or he needs to not swing so hard at those pitches and just work on making contact for singles even though the pitch is not in his wheelhouse.
Dave_D - May 21, 2010
Sad to see JC Holt released as he was the subject of my favorite shot I took last year of the G-Braves. He seemed like a good guy too…but it’ll be good to see Matt Young get some more starts at 2B.

Dave_D - May 21, 2010
Amazing shot as always. Wow. Is that John Jaso in the back? Yeah, I hate to see JC get cut, but at least he got picked up quick.
cbwilk - May 21, 2010
Yeah, good to see him sign on with another team.
Not sure if that’s Jaso as the catcher or not…It was #3 for Durham last year, his name ended in AZ.
Dave_D - May 21, 2010
Ah, Craig Albernaz. Wow, you’ve got one of like 3 existing pictures of him actually in a game.
cbwilk - May 21, 2010
How did that Gress meme start?

This was the reply that started it all, IMO...
Are you Randy Gress’ brother? I love the guy, but come on.

buzzdeadwax - May 21, 2010
Nice work. No way I could have remembered that.
Smoltz's Beard - May 21, 2010
I thought there was a fanshot about promoting Gress to a higher level, and a commenter asked if Gress had posted the fanshot.

TradeAndruw - May 21, 2010
Haha. I’m awesome. Give the guy credit though, he was right that Gress was a better prospect than Eric Campbell and Kala Ka’aihue.
cbwilk - May 21, 2010
Good point
buzzdeadwax - May 21, 2010
I don't know what's worse..
Randy Gress at 17 or how bad this list turned out
Mighty Healthy - May 21, 2010
Gress over Kimbrel cracks me up.
Smoltz's Beard - May 21, 2010
Kimbrel Slice
ATLandUNC - May 21, 2010
there's a lot that could be ridiculed in 20/20 hindsight...
Rohrbough and Locke in the top, if I’m not mistaken Ka’aihue was cut shortly into the 09 season as was Campbell.
Mr. Sanchez - May 21, 2010
Anyone else see where Resop can ask to be traded if he’s not on the 25-man by june 15? Maybe its time to give him a shot??
HansonManCrush - May 21, 2010 via mobile
He's posting some awesome K-rates
It’s reminiscent of what Medlen was doing prior to his promotion last year.
Bronn - May 21, 2010
Anyone else think Matt Young kinda looks like Corky from “Life Goes On?”
Seriously, nice to see him playing some second.
