Wow! Wow. This looked like it would be a miserable day for the Braves. Their ace pitcher gave up eight runs and couldn't get the third out in the second inning. They grounded into double plays to kill rallies. Their wunderkind struck out with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, but then pinch hitter Brooks Conrad stepped to the plate. He was batting in Chipper Jones' spot in the lineup, after Chipper had been lifted in a double switch earlier in the game. On a 2-2 pitch, Conrad hit an opposite field grand slam on a fastball from the Reds closer. Braves walk off with the win.
Cincinnati may have been the team coming into this series known for their comeback wins, but the Braves matched their mojo in game one and topped all of their comebacks in game two. A seven-run comeback in the ninth inning! Capped off by a grand slam that went off the glove of the left fielder, as it was stretched over the wall. That is absolutely amazing.
I promise not to post any more Tommy Hanson mullet pictures. That must have been what jinxed him into having the worst outing of his big league career. Hanson couldn't get the third out in the top of the second inning. After a leadoff single, Hanson recorded two quick outs, and then it all fell apart... helped out somewhat by a radically inconsistent strike zone from the home plate umpire. Tommy walked a guy, then gave up a single, and then a grand slam. Hanson then gave up three more hits and was pulled from the game. The damage in that third inning, 7 hits, 2 walks, and 8 earned runs.
Jesse Chavez, Jonny Venters, and Craig Kimbrel did a great job in relief. Chavez was able to record the third out in the second inning, but gave up a solo homerun in the fifth, which was the only run the trio of relievers surrendered in their seven and a third innings of work. Certainly their good work of not letting the score get more out of control allowed the Braves the confidence to come back and win this game.
The improbably hero, Brooks Conrad. This was the Braves third straight walk off win.

Worth noting
this Braves team has already put together 5 or 6 moments that are as great as any moments they’ve had since the 95 WS title. What a flair for the dramatic.

reading this, I noticed that the Reds fans are also making lots of “fisted” jokes. Good to see we’re not alone on that.

Yeah, I’ve been going back and reading some of their older OTs. Those guys are pretty cool. Good sense of self-deprecating humor, open minded fanbase. I think I might start posting over there.
!Vive la Francoeur! - May 20, 2010
I hopped over there
when we started making a 9th inning rally. Some guy named “RedsMasochist” was complaining about the Braves’ announcers. I had to make a comment.
“If you’re listening to Chip Caray, you really are a Masochist.”
Bronn - May 20, 2010
Wow...
There’s some comedy gold in there. Reds’ fans talking about suicide, murdering Dusty Baker and my favorite – the bit about how Conrad was going to be an easy out when he came to the plate.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - May 20, 2010
Well, it's funny in hindsight
But I know I wasn’t the only one worried about a GIDP when he was announced.
Bronn - May 20, 2010
In fact, I was bummed when he fouled off that first pitch. It was a great pitch and he put a great swing on it, and I was thinking “Well, there goes his best shot.”
Bronn - May 20, 2010
Indeed.
You gotta tip your hat to Conrad…that pitch was tailing outside, and he went with it and someone put enough behind it to get it over the fence. Pretty impressive.
Smoltz's Beard - May 20, 2010
"someone" put enough behind it to get it over the fence....
Yep….there were definitely some angels involved in the bottom of the 9th.

DolphinNation - May 20, 2010
Bottom of the 9th for me...
has to be the wildest, craziest, and most unexpected baseball inning I have ever seen in my life. No way a team should come back from being down 9-3 and to win a game on two errors, the Golden Boy rookie striking out the bases loaded, and the guy behind him nicknamed “Hobo Conrad” would do the improbable and hit a Grand Slam Homerun for the win (Homerun was a botch catch by the LF that went over the fence). INSANSE!!!! GOD I LOVE THE BRAVES!!!!!
romone_braves91 - May 20, 2010
When everyone was hating Brooks Conrad
I kept the faith. And it paid off!
What an awesome win. Utterly ridiculous. I saw the bottom line while watching Sportsnation and I immediately ran to go tell my friend. This has to give us some momentum.
RichmondBraves - May 20, 2010

Braves had a game like this
Back in 2004. They were scuffling along in the season, mid June, and were down 7-0 on the road. Put together a huge inning late against the Orioles and it really turned the season around, put them back in the playoffs.
Bronn - May 20, 2010
I remember when that happened
though I stupidly had turned that game off. Not this time. Hopefully this win spurs us to the playoffs just like that one did.
Jacob Peterson - May 20, 2010
Good old J.D Drew with the 2 run homer.
Bronn - May 20, 2010
Also, Nick Green
Maybe Brooks Conrad is this year’s version of Nick Green.
Bronn - May 20, 2010
Great comparison
Brooksy’s got more power, but they’re the same kind of scrappy AAAA-type guy who always help us with clutch hits.
Jacob Peterson - May 20, 2010
I don’t think Green hit a homerun that season that wasn’t in the 9th inning.

Jacob Peterson - May 20, 2010

Smoltz's Beard - May 20, 2010

racist.
Just from this standpoint-back up left handed outfielders that became starters and had lots of success. Also were quickly fan favorites.
Bronn - May 20, 2010
But Chucky T
was skinny and had no power, and Hinske is monstrous and has tons of power. Chucky had no real MLB experience, Hisnke is a grizzled vet. And so on.
Jacob Peterson - May 20, 2010
Hey
Chuck had a decent .157 ISO that year. Don’t hate!
Bronn - May 20, 2010
I love Chucky from that year. But he’s done absolutely 0 since. He was a fluke. A fluke I’ll always have fond memories of, but still. He’s not in Hinske’s league at all.
Jacob Peterson - May 20, 2010
Yes
This is a much more talented team than the one we had in 2004. Especially if Chipper’s luck changes a little bit and he gets his power stroke back.
Still, this is the type of season that could win Bobby another Manager of the Year award. That’d be an awesome way for him to go out.
Bronn - May 20, 2010
+1
On all counts.
Jacob Peterson - May 20, 2010

Jacob Peterson - May 20, 2010

El Soro - May 20, 2010
Glad I learned my lesson from last night’s game. Turned it off top 8 up 4-0 and missed Heyward’s walkoff. Didn’t make the same mistake today. You’re my boy Brooks, and go Bravos!
chantshuffler - May 20, 2010 via mobile
I still have a glazed look on my face. That was unbelievable. That’s the kind of comeback that you almost never see. You dream about it, sure. “Hey, if we get a few guys on here, get a hit or two, Grand Slam, boom, a win!” But it just doesn’t happen. Major props to all the hitters for not just packing it in. They were still working the count and putting up great at-bats in the 9th.
Special notice goes out to the bullpen for their fantastic work keeping us within 8. At the time, I was just glad that they ate some innings, but they only gave up 1 run, and that enabled the awesome 9th inning.
When that ball bounced off the top of the fence and went over, I just about lost it. So awesome. I really can’t express in words how awesome. Congratulations to the team, and to everyone who didn’t turn the game off!

AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
I said it in the game thread last night that this years team is different. Last year these guys would have gone out there 1st pitch swinging just to go home.

I love
That the Reds were 99.9% to win the game in the 9th inning.
Bronn - May 20, 2010
actually
99.8%, but not that big a difference
atl192485 - May 20, 2010
Check the top of the 9th
After a single by Hernandez, it went to 99.9%
Bronn - May 20, 2010
ah
good catch. that means the braves beat 1-1000 odds instead of 1-500 odds. wow.

For me at least. Dejection is awesome for other teams.

Granted, it’s much better than trolling but…And I just finished reading their lamentations. Consider me full, those tears granted sustenance! What a great win. I’m still watching the walk-off. I can’t get over it.
kreese555 - May 20, 2010
Same here.
I was depressed I had to watch updates on gamecast via phone, but watching the walk-off satisfies a lot.

kreese555 - May 20, 2010
Well
He was telling the truth at the time.
Even after today, we’re middle of the pack.
Bronn - May 20, 2010
top 2 in May, though.
We dug ourselves a huge hole in April but we’ve made good progress already on getting out of it.
Jacob Peterson - May 20, 2010
Middle of the pack is not one of the worst in the league, and I believe the Natinals are ranked below us. Some nerve.
Tim Goad - May 20, 2010
Did you see
Votto with his hand up, hopping, thinking he caught it? Hilarious!
a hooter's baby - May 20, 2010
My favorite part of the whole thing
Votto making the victory sign while Brooks strongly considers spiking his helmet, only to have everything go topsy turvy two seconds later.
Sam Jethroe - May 20, 2010
someone needs to make his confused trip around the basepaths into a gif
Smoltz's Beard - May 20, 2010

Tim Goad - May 20, 2010
I'd love to see
Someone plot the path on a map of the infield from an aerial view, highlighting like drawing a play up on basketball or something.
Following the turn around first, the u-turn between first and second, then the spin back to second base and the hopping into home plate. That, as a .gif, would make me laugh for years.

MBL1 - May 20, 2010
Poor JJ....
I’m sure he was celebrating on the inside.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - May 20, 2010
Yeah, I’d be really angry that I couldn’t go out there and celebrate. By the way, Diaz’s thumb surgery was successful, and the best part is that it wasn’t done by Dr. James Andrews. The three words that every athlete fears.
MBL1 - May 20, 2010
Athletes fear the words
“you’re going to need surgery.” I’m sure they love Dr. Andrews. He’s saved hundreds of careers.
But good to hear about Matty.
Jacob Peterson - May 20, 2010
More like “You’re going to need surgery and it’s going to be done by Dr. James Andrews”
He must be so freaking rich. It’s true, he’s saved a ton of careers. But when Andrews is called in, you know it’s serious. That’s what I meant, really.

southman - May 20, 2010
Awesome
Quick bio that no one cares about but I have to write out anyway so I can tell you how fun this comeback was.
I grew up a Braves fan in AR watching on TBS in the mid 80’s (I’m 31) and when I graduated college from OU (Oklahoma) I moved to Cincy to work. Three years ago my wife and I moved to Charlotte, still a Braves fan but I went to about 100 Reds games and almost every Braves game against the Reds in my five years living there. My wife and her parents are huge Reds fans and my wife’s parents had season tickets 10 rows behind the Reds dugout when we were dating. Now we live in Charlotte, but I happened to be back in my old office in Cincinnati this week working.
Any of you that have ever to been to Cincinnati have heard of Skyline Chili and my co worker and I had a bet for lunch tomorrow on the game today. I’m sitting there through the 2nd inning debacle and gave him cash to buy his own lunch so I didn’t have to order for him. As the 9th inning starts I say “You know, the Reds have been really lucky with all these late game wins. You are due to blow one.” And holy shit did the wheels start turning. I still haven’t seen highlights and can’t wait to watch. But it was awesome watching it all unfold on the gamecast and my co worker being in absolute disbelief when I told him that Conrad hit a walk off grand slam (which I got from you guys on the game thread before it posted to the gamecast).
Sorry for the long post, but this one was too sweet!
CharlotteChop - May 20, 2010
That's awesome! Did you get your lunch paid for and your money back?!
Stickittodaman…
kreese555 - May 20, 2010
Ha! That was the best part and I left it out. So my coworker, who is a big big Reds fan, is all hacked off about the loss and slamming/banging around logging off his computer for the day and I said. “Hey, I need my money back but you can’t give me money, you have to order my lunch”.
CharlotteChop - May 20, 2010
Actually the best part was the walk off GS, but you get the point! HA!
CharlotteChop - May 20, 2010
THAT
is fantastic.
kreese555 - May 20, 2010
Hey CharlotteChop,

10 strikeouts against Arizona is a “crap” start? He got victimized by Nate McLouth losing it in the lights, which lead to 2 of the 5 runs.
And the guy tried to pitch sick today. Both Hanson and Cox told the AJC he was dizzy and light-headed before the game.
“I was feeling dizzy and light-headed in the bullpen before the game,” Hanson said. “But I’m not going to sit here and make excuses. I’ve pitched sick before and did fine.”

MBL1 - May 21, 2010
This is amazing
In the past couple of years, games like this there was no know way we were going to come back and win. These are the types of wins that you know that the team is special and can do something big
Braves24 - May 20, 2010
We are .5 games out of first now. Not sure when or if WAS or MIA play but they’re 4 back and we are down 4.5 games.
BullManUGA - May 20, 2010
Fuck, .5 out of second. Stupid brain.
BullManUGA - May 20, 2010
Braves now 9-6 in one-run games. 12-14 all others.
TonyAlmeyda - May 20, 2010
I still remember that game in the last week of June 2004 against the Orioles where the Braves were down 8-0 in the 7th and came back to win 9-8. After that game, they went on a gigantic run that put the NL East out of reach for every one else.
Make no mistake: the division is a lot better now than it was in 2004. But games like these spark teams for the rest of the season. They’ve won 13 of their last 20 games and 8 of their last 10.
Nate McLouth and Troy Glaus finally emerging along with Eric Hinske’s explosion has unlocked the potential we all knew this team had. And with all of the Phillies injury troubles, now is the time to strike.
AnEternalEnigma - May 20, 2010
After a dismal April, Glaus is hitting almost .300 now – wow. All of us (including me) that were losing patience with his slow April bat are hopefully rejoicing in his patience and steadiness to trust himself to come around – I know I am.
CharlotteChop - May 20, 2010 via mobile
No, all of us weren’t losing patience with his slow April.
Smoltz's Beard - May 20, 2010
This is PRECISELY
why you shouldn’t lose patience with players in April.
Jacob Peterson - May 21, 2010
This (PRECISELY).

Hanson was ill?
Listened to postgame show on 680 and they were talking about how he was lightheaded at the top of the 1st inning and was about to faint at the top of the 2nd.
Not an excuse, but it sure would explain a very uncharacteristic performance today.
skymuse - May 20, 2010
Hanson indeed confirmed that he was pitching ill. He said he felt light-headed and dizzy warming up before the game. He said he wasn’t going to make excuses because he’s pitched sick before and did fine.
In fact, Hanson beat the Red Sox last year while suffering flu-like symptoms. He just didn’t have the magic today.

This week they decide to block radio feeds. Last week they blocked TC because it is identified as Social Networking..
I was reduced to watching my phone for Text Msgs from TC and AJCBraves and just decided, for the heck of it, to “go on an errand” at the top of the ninth to listen in the car. After last night, I was not leaving anything to chance.
Man, the radio guy was calling for it from the bottom of the ninth. I had to pull over after McLouth and was honking the horn and shouting by the end of it.
Man what a burst of testosterone that was. I’m gonna be a major stallion with the missus tonight ;-)

LETS GO BRAVES! BEAT THE PIRATES!!
CJ10JHEY22 - May 21, 2010
Something I don't understand...
Is why fans of many of these teams we have beaten really think the Braves are a bad team. I saw it on the Brewers site, the Reds site, and even hear it from all the Cubs fans where I live. Maybe it’s just sour grapes, but it seems like they think the Braves are the Pirates or something. I mean, they have good starting pitching (that has the potential to be great if Lowe manages to keep us in the game and KK pitches like he is capable of), they have a great bullpen, they have a decent offense (that also has the potential to be very good if guys play up to their career averages). I just don’t get why the Braves don’t get more respect from other teams. If I were a fan of another team, I don’t think I would really feel that confident in winning (unless maybe Lowe was pitching :))
sleezer1788 - May 21, 2010
Well, we were a bad team in April. Playing well below our talent level. Most other fans were probably expecting that team to show up, so when we actually come to play they act like it was an accident or something.
Better to just ignore those posters. One guy on RR was acting like Hanson wasn’t an ace anymore just cause he got roughed up. Really?
