Jordan Schafer Assigned to Class A Rome for Rehab Assignment

Jordan Schafer will be assigned to Single-A Rome to start his rehab assignment. As you probably remember, Schafer began the 2009 season as the Braves' centerfielder and played well in the month of April before tearing ligaments in his wrist. He also hit a HR in his first career AB, becoming the 99th player in MLB history and the 3rd in Braves history to do so.

Jordan had wrist surgery in September and has been slowly progressing since then. He's been in extended spring training the past few weeks and has been swinging the bat without much discomfort.

What does this mean for the 2010 Braves? In a best case scenario, Schafer would be ready to return to the Majors in July and the Braves would then have an extra outfielder to trade at the trade deadline for either A) salary relief, B) another player to help in August and September or C) young prospects. The Braves wouldn't have to trade an OF, but with 5 on the Major League roster it's hard to imagine they hold on to all of them.

Personally, I'd like to see Jordan play the entire 2010 season in the minor leagues. He's still only 23-years old and never got proper time to develop in the minor leagues. If the Braves need an OF bat for the stretch run, I'd much rather add a veteran FA-to-be than rush Schafer to the Majors (again).

Best of luck to Jordan on his rehab assignment.

Rehab?...

is that common for a guy going to AAA? I would have assumed he’d just stay in extended spring until ready and then be simply assigned to Gwinnett. A rehab stint makes me think the FO is considering bringing him up to the big club.

Same here. I was a little confused, but I’m sure they have a plan for Schafer

The FO is planning on Schafer being a big part of this team in the second half.

Same here. Rehab usually means he would join the major league team when the rehab assignment is complete. Probably since he was last with Gwinnett, the rehab assignment is to get him back up to speed for Gwinnett.

And that would be the first I've heard of a minor league rehab assignment...

to get up to speed for the minor leagues.

Actually it’s pretty common. The thing is, it usually happens later in the year where a guy gets hurt and when he’s healthy he’ll play a few games for the GCL team before moving on to whatever team he’s going to be playing for. A few years ago Wes Timmons actually played a few for the GCL and a few for Myrtle Beach before rejoining Richmond. The GCL hasn’t started yet, so the Braves are just going with the lowest level team playing right now to ease him back in. Make no mistake, AAA pitchers are really good, most of them Major League good, and it wouldn’t be fair to have the first live game pitching he’s seen in almost a year be in AAA.

Best of luck to Jordan. Get the wrist healthy first. Worry about the bigs later.

Great News

With any luck, Jordan can come up and push Nate to LF and give us the leadoff hitter we badly need.

That works for me

Excellent News. Just get that think to heal Jordan. We need you

He heard I was coming to Rome Monday so he wanted to come too.

yeah, but....

you need to get busy doing something about all this DARN RAIN!!!!!

Check the weather again. I am meant to see Rome Braves baseball!

Hope to see him soon we need him asap

Man with the way Chipper, Nate, and Melky are hitting way below their averages of their for their career entering todays game we need more speed and offense.

If Nate doesn’t turn it around look for us to bring up Schafer as soon as his wrist is healthy and slowing bring him along in the Majors. Nate has really been a let down to this point for me this year.

Always cheering for Schafer b/c he is our best chance at a “true leadoff hitter” and we haven’t had a true one since Furcal.

Go Braves.

man, it’s nice to hear all these positive comments about Logan. I hope he comes up and is seated at the right hand of The Heyward… and by that, I mean, I hope he does as well as we all expected him to do last year.

Not to mention that Rome is home for the next week while Gwinnett takes off and heads on the road this week for another long road trip.

I wish Jordan the best…hope to see him in Gwinnett soon.
