Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/17

Robinson Lopez is trying to make sure people know his name, starting with South Atlantic League hitters.

Robinson Lopez is trying to make sure people know his name, starting with South Atlantic League hitters.

Gwinnett 7, Lehigh Valley 8, 15 innings

  • F. Freeman 2-7, DB, 3 RBI, .273 AVG
  • M. Jones 2-6, HR (6), RBI, BB, .260 AVG
  • T. Redmond 5 IP, 4 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 7 K, 5.66 ERA
  • M. Dunn 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 K
  • C. Gearrin 3 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 3.48
  • Gwinnett scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extra innings. Jordan Schafer drove in Brandon Hicks on a sacrifice fly, then Gregor Blanco drove in JC Boscan on a double. Freddie Freeman followed with a double that scored Blanco and Wes Timmons. Unfortunately, Cory Gearrin gave up the winning run in the 15th, leading to the G-Braves loss. When short-inning relievers are forced to pitch too long bad things typically happen, and that was the case with Gearrin tonight as he came undone in his third inning, hitting three batters and throwing a wild pitch, all of which led to a bases loaded sacrifice fly.

    Mississippi 1, West Tennessee 9

  • E. Duncan 2-3, .296 AVG
  • T. Jones 1-1, HR (1), RBI, .215 AVG
  • J. Thompson 3.2 IP, 9 R, 6 ER, 10 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 6.75 ERA
  • J. Chapman 3.1 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 4 K, 1.59 ERA
  • The embarrassing thing wasn't that the only offense the M-Braves could muster was a solo homer by Travis Jones, who came into the game as a pinch runner, it was that the Diamond Jaxx had a bullpen day where 5 different pitchers, none pitching more than 2 innings, combined to stifle them. Jacob Thompson has been very hittable this year, allowing 12.3 hits per 9 innings, leading to a 1.70 WHIP, which just won't cut it. Jaye Chapman was outstanding in relief though, striking out 4 in 3.1 innings. Ryne Reynoso made his first appearance for Mississippi this year, pitching a perfect 9th.

    Myrtle Beach - posponed, rain

    Rome 14, Charleston 6, game 1

  • K. Rose 2-5, .305 AVG
  • C. Harrilchak 2-4, 2 RBI, BB, .250 AVG
  • R. Hefflinger 1-4, 2B, 4 RBI, BB, .259 AVG
  • M. Jones 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, .195 AVG
  • M. Weaver 2-4, 2 RBI, BB, .262 AVG
  • O. Marval 2-5, 2 RBI, .207 AVG
  • L.V. Ware 3-4, 2B, RBI, .231 AVG
  • C. Masters 3 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 1.32 ERA
  • D. Hale 2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 7.36 ERA
  • Every hitter in the Rome lineup had a hit, with the exception of Jordan Kreke, and even he reached on a walk and on a hit by pitch, scoring both times. Robby Hefflinger drove in 3 runs on a double and LV Ware collected the most hits on the day with 3. Myke Jones drvoe in a pair of runs, giving him a team leading 17 RBI, impressive considering he's still hitting below .200. Chris Masters looked good again, only pitching 3 innings because the game was the completion of Sunday's game which was suspended in the middle of the 3rd. David Hale finished off the game and proved my assumption that he would pitch better in relief correct.

    Rome 7, Charleston 4, game 2

  • C. Harrilchak 2-3, RBI, SB (5), .262 AVG
  • R. Hefflinger 2-3, 2 DB, RBI, .279 AVG
  • J. Kreke 1-3, 2 RBI, .240 AVG
  • C. Bethancourt 1-3, HR (2), 2 RBI, .211 AVG
  • C. Lovett 2-3, .250 AVG
  • R. Lopez 5 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 K, W (2), 2.45 ERA
  • Rome manages to sweep the double header, pounding out a combined 24 hits in the 12 offensive innings they had to work with. Cory Harrilchak goes 4-7 with 3 RBI and Hefflinger goes 3-7 with 3 doubles and 5 RBI. Great night for both hitters. Christian Bethancourt was 2-8 on the night, hitting his 2nd homer of the season. He'd been in an extended slump, but is showing signs of breaking out with 4 hits in his last 15 at bats. Robinson Lopez made his first start of the season and it was his longest appearance. With 5 Ks in 5 innings he actually lowed his K/9 down to 11.2, still a very high number that pretty much any pitcher would kill to have. Add in the 2.9 K/BB and it's no wonder he's been making so many take notice this season.

Nice to see Bethancourt hitting better as of late. I was starting to worry about him a little bit, even though he’s so young.

He’s been impressing with his raw talent though as much as anything. Sub 2.00 sec pop times and such…

    Minor correction

Gearrin gave up the winning run in the 15th inning, which was indeed his third inning of work. He had been filthy in the 13th and 14th, but started to tire and lose control in the 15th. He was still able to get out of an ugly mess and only give up 1 run, but the damage was done.

Thanks, I knew it was the 15th, I just put down 9 instead…to see if you were paying attention…

    3 Questions

Will Mike Dunn be able to pry the lefty bullpen spot from Venters? I’ve been impressed with Venters, but Dunn is being filthy.

Does anyone know if there is any difference between’s Bethancourt’s hitting success when he plays C or DH?

    I forgot the third question.

I agree with that about Dunn. Plus, he just looks meaner and has a filthy circle change grip.

I like Venters though, but I think he’s better used as a starter personally instead of a LOOGY.

With the way Jonny is pitching, why get rid of him? He’s been surprisingly outstanding.

    Sell High

Venters has been more lucky than good. Sure he has a good FB and nice slider but poor control and command if a team wants to give up a good prospect or two to get him I’d trade him in a heartbeat and call up Dunn.

Nobody trades anything worthwhile for lefty relievers, particularly ones who aren’t proven. It just doesn’t happen.

Pujols for Venters? Throw in Jojo to get the deal done?

Probably have to add Chavez to get Pujols. Cards would probably do Holliday for Venters and JoJo though.

Did anyone notice that Matt Young played 2B last night? I think that might be his first game not in the outfield this year.

I fired the game up on the computer late…I think it was the 11th inning. I didn’t realize until now that Young played the whole game at 2B. I thought he had ended up there in one of those “we’re outta players, you go play X” situations.

I noticed he went 0-6. Thanks for saying something though, I’m pulling for him to get possibly get a bench spot next season, and the more positions he can hold down the better!

working towards possible utility status going forward?
Arodys dealing in the early game today.

    7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

Also some new faces in Rome as Jake Hanson (LF), Jace Whitmer (1B), Chris Curley (2B) all got their first starts this morning. Right-hander Dalton Accord also made his first appearance last night for the Rome club. I don’t know much about Accord, but he lists 6’3" 210, is just 20 this year and had impressive numbers in limited work in the GCL last year. So there’s some obvious things to like there.

Yeah, I noticed Acord last night. Didn’t even remember his name from last year, but you do have to like the size.

Yeah, i googled him and it sounds like he can throw pretty hard.

And he’s only 20 too. Who knows, one more sleeper maybe.

and I just asked about Hanson...

as cb said, he’s now an OFer, joining the potential slugging LF options Hefflinger, Johnson, Rodriguez, and Milligan.

And interesting to see Whitmer at 1B. I wonder if that’s permanent or if he’ll still catch.

He played 1B last year. Since RSF went down they’ve been looking for a 1B, playing Marval and Wiley there too. It’s kind of like whoever can stand at 1B and catch the ball is gonna get a look. Heck, Whitmer is huge, so he’d be a great target over there if he’s flexible enough for it.

    Are you talking in practice?...

That says nothing but C, although I’ve often wondered on the accuracy for minor league guys.

With Bethancourt in the system, I was more wondering if the organization had changed it’s thinking and was trying to find another spot where his bat might be able to be a part of long term plans. The thought was along the lines of Salty and Flowers, who were also Cs with reputations as big sticks, but we kept them at C for “value” instead of seeing if they could help at 1B (which we needed at the time).

Hmm. No, it’s probably right. I might have mixed up him and Wiley.

    Intriguing though...

cause unlike Hanson, his numbers defensively don’t jump out at you as horrifying, and he gunned down a decent amount of stealers. I guess we’ll see if he’s splitting duties in the future, especially once RSF is back. The article below calls him a C though, so I guess he’ll be behind the plate when Bethancourt is sitting since Schleuber has been pretty bad.

Anyone got a time frame on that by the way? rbravesfan? He’s been out a little over a month now I wanna say. Was the original estimate 6-8 weeks?

    A

    double fail, cause...

    “that” = RSF’s return.

A broken hand is usually 6-8 weeks. Couldn’t have been any more than 5 weeks so far.

    4-5...

he went on the DL before April 20th. Somewhere in the teens, like the 18th or 13th.

Original estimate was late May/early June on RSF. Radio announcer said today that they are transitioning Whitmer to 1st base. He’s on the roster as a catcher. Don’t know if that helps or not. :)

    Final line:

    8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K

Not quite his normal strikeout rate but it looks like he was dealing and I love the zero walks.

    Damn fine final line

Glad to see him rebound from his last start. Maybe he saw Teheran get promoted and wants to get promoted as well lol.

Yeah, at this rate he’s probably not far behind.

I'd think he'd be more likely to stay there longer...

since it’s his first time at that level. Teheran had 7 starts for Rome last year.

But he does have a damn fine line for today. Coupled with a very productive day offensively. Go Rome!

40/9 K/BB ratio and 2.18 FIP on the year.

    Vizcaino’s defense has under-rated him.

    OK...

still say he has about 50 more innings before they move him up though.

Innings @ Rome: Hanson- 73, Teheran- 76. Vizcaino has 43 so far so he’s probably there for at least another 35 innings. Could be closer to 50 though, who knows.

    Good stuff, thanks...

Although to counterpoint, Randall Delgado had a full season there with 125 innings last year at their age. And others have also followed the step per season like Wainwright (who did rookie, then low A, then high A, then AA before we dealt him to St Louis). Guess it all depends.

Definitely not arguing for his promotion. He’s just quietly been damn good.

I'm headed to the afternoon game tomorrow in Winston.

Pelicans v. Dash. Delgado would be on regular rest, but will he pitch the night game? Any guesses?

    Teheran should be pitching today

    And Delgado tomorrow.

Nope, Hoover got pushed back to today.

So does that mean that it’ll be Teheran and Delgado in the twin bill? That’s a guaranteed awesome kid to watch!

    wait a second

    could it be?

    BOOM!

    Que?

Haven’t seen you around in awhile….we have missed the “Proctobombs”

    Ahh...

Glad to know I’ve been missed. I hope I get back around here this summer once I get my job situation lined up.

    Can't be the same guy...

    he’s somewhat timely.

Pictures are a must. And a report on that ballpark, cause I’ve heard it’s outstanding.

    That's why I'm going.

About to head to Tallahassee and baseball wasteland for the summer, so I’m in Winston tomorrow and Greensboro on Thursday.

I’m making a trip to Winston in August, so be sure to fill me in on how awesome it is.

    see me....

DOING THE HAPPY DANCE re: Rome…….I told y’all to be patient it was gonna come together….. :-) But all this roster movement is giving me a giant headache.

The key to watch with Schafer

Is for some of his power to come back. With a wrist injury, I’d suspect that even though he’s strong enough to swing and make contact, it’s still going to take awhile to regain the strength to hit the ball hard. It’s not that he can’t be successful without hitting a lot of home runs, but he does need to make hard contact and drive the ball into the alleys and corners, and his groundballs need to be hit hard enough to find holes in the infield.

Still, glad to see him at AAA, where he belongs.

could be a blessing in disguise...

helping him learn to do a better job of making consistent contact, and when the power returns it’s gravy on top.
