Lehigh Valley 0, Gwinnett 3
Hot prospect Yunel Escobar makes his debut for Gwinnett with a couple of singles and a walk. Maybe this guy can help out in the majors pretty soon. Jojo Reyes also made his first appearance of the season after having been on the DL for the first month and a half. My bold prediction? He dominates AAA and then flounders in Atlanta.
Mississippi 9, Chattanooga 1
This game was just 4-1 until the 9th inning when Mauro Gomez and Donell Linares went back to back (with Gomez's HR being of the 4 run variety). Cody Johnson also homered for the second time in as many games and also proved he must read the blog as he took a couple of walks after I maligned his diminished plate discipline this season. Eric Cordier also pitched a fantastic game throwing 101 pitches and generating 9 groundballs vs 4 flyballs. He appears to have fully recovered and may be a useful arm yet.
Salem 8, Myrtle Beach 2
Randall Delgado had his shortest outing of the season (he had gone 5+ innings in every start) in a game where he didn't much help from the defense (2 unearned runs) or the offense (just 4 hits). Delgado and Teheran are going to pair together for probably one of the best 1-2 pitching duos in the minors.
Rome 3, Savannah 8
Brett DeVall was not as sharp in his second start after returning from off season surgery and the offense was shut down by James Fuller. On April 29 Mycal Jones was hitting a minuscule .118 on the season and was looking like a terrible bust. Since then he has put up a 1.000+ OPS and has been the best hitter for Rome. In 80 April ABs he struck out 29 times, in 37 May ABs he has just 4 Ks. He is hitting for power and average and is still stealing bases and playing solid defense. If his adjustments stick we could finally have another solid infield bat for the future.

Anyone know when Spruill is coming back?

Yunel got his workout in the field tonight…he was all over the place and made many highlight reel plays at short. I’ll post a recap of his game here in a minute, in pictures of course.

Also, Tim Gustafson came on after JoJo pitched his two innings and pitched shutout ball from the 3rd to the 8th and gave way to Mike Dunn in the 9th for the save.

Cody now is leading the organization in homeruns.
Yeah, the kid id definitely a non-prospect total washout.

He’s showing that, as a young player, he can consistently post similar results at higher levels, as he did in the lower levels. He’s a ~.250AVG, high power/K hitter (to put it most simply). If he can continue to keep up with the higher competition, we will have one more player to provide exciting power displays at Turner Field.
I was kinda worried that he might completely fizzle out at Mississippi, but I’m starting to think, “Wait a second, could it be?” And now I know for sure, I just added one more guy to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the field together, looking for strippers and hanging breaking balls. So tonight, I make a toast to Cody!

And in light of an .851 OPS, your point is … ???

Another guy to keep on our the radar, relief pitcher Brett Butts. He pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout for Mississippi, to give him a season total of 18.2IP, 15H, 24K, 2BB, and a 0.48ERA (1.11FIP). He has really found control of the plate this season.

Schafer had two beautiful throw to home in this game from Center. He was merely a half second late on the first one and gunned down the runner on his second throw later in the game. Very accurate last night. Cordier had a pretty decent outing. Johnson’s homerun was called fair, but from my seat 2 rows behind home plate, I swear it looked foul by 10 feet. I think they gave it to him for distance because he killed that ball.
