Braves Promote Top Pitching Prospect Julio Teheran to Myrtle Beach

The Atlanta Braves wasted no time in promoting their top pitching prospect, Julio Teheran, from low-A Rome to hi-A Myrtle Beach. In 7 games started for the Rome Braves, Teheran has compiled a 1.14 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 39.1 innings pitched. He's also held opponents to less than a 1.00 WHIP, giving up just 23 hits and walking only 10 for an 0.84 WHIP.

He is truly one of the best arms to come through the Atlanta system in quite a while. As a prospect, he has the same promise as Tommy Hanson did, only Teheran is doing more at a younger age than Hanson did. Carolina League hitters better watch out, here comes Julio.

Teheran will join another prized Braves pitching prospect at Myrtle Beach, Randall Delgado. He has had a stellar season, except for one start towards the end of April. In 7 starts spanning 40.2 innings Delgado has a 2.88 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP, and has allowed only 31 hits and 9 walks while striking out 45 which leads the league. Up until the promotion of Teheran, Delgado was the youngest pitcher in the Carolina League.

Here is what Baseball America has to say about Delgado this week, when they listed him sixth on their weekly prospect hot sheet:

Delgado already had electric stuff with a low 90s fastball, which he complements with a changeup and a curveball, but his biggest development this year has been his command of the strike zone. Delgado has produced a 1.63 groundout/flyout ratio and is holding opponents to a .211 average, third best in the league.

Myrtle Beach is now a very exciting place to see the young Braves pitching on display

everyone from TC

loves this kid. and loves this move

not true (kind of)
I normally don't like early-season call-ups like this,

but I think it’s pretty clear that Julio needs to face tougher hitters to continue to advance as a pitcher. He’s extremely promising.

Congratulations to the next great Atlanta ace!

Nice!

Good to see the kid moving up the ladder. Although wasn’t he the one taking Vizcaino under his wing? Hope somebody else steps up in his absence.

Good luck Julio down by the schoolyard!

Awesome.

Good for Julio. I’m sure he’ll perform well in the Carolina League and be in MS next summer.

Hope I get to see him pitch when I go out to MB next month.

So......

….barring trade or significant injury, what are the estimates for his appearance in Atlanta? 2012? 2013?

I've heard

end of 2012 or beginning of 2013. A lot depends on how he handles his first taste of AA (presumably next year sometime). If he thrives there, he might force us to accelerate his timetable. If he struggles, we might not see him for a few years. Though he’s so young, that wouldn’t really be a big worry.

Who knows...

with our rotation under contract for next year, and Mike Minor above him, it’d seem doubtful before 2012, but then if he excels in Myrtle I would expect him in at least the big league camp next spring, where if we dealt someone he could be battling Minor for the 5th starter gig. As is, depends on his success as he moves up, but you could probably assume a very slim chance next spring, possibly during the 2011 season, or at least by 2012.

With his age and talent level, he could move slow or fast.

next spring

is a VERRRY long shot.

Agreed, but not impossible depending on how he develops over the next several months.

So, in 14 starts and 77 innings with Rome the last two years (which accounts for more than half of his pro stats), July is 3-5, with a 2.92 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 8.5 K/9 and 3.48 K/BB. Not too shabby. And this promotion isn’t really that quick, both when you factor in the 7 starts last year and that a few years ago when they put him at Danville as a 17 year old the Braves probably envisioned him starting 2010 with MB. The only reason things got slowed down is because of the shoulder tightness he experienced in 08, something that’s never shown up again.

3 wins in 14 starts?

Joe Morgan says this guy must suck.

It’s true. He’s just not gutsy enough. Of course, he doesn’t sleep in the clubhouse like Joe’s boy Junior.

if only two

of teheran / vizcaino / delgado / minor pan out, we’ll have a scary rotation in a few years.

don't forget ...

Lopez, Devall, Ortegano, Hoover, Stovall, Spruill, Carlos Perez, etc. Even given the low success rate of prospects, you gotta like our chances to form a dynamite rotation from say 2015-2020.

yea

we can def get a bat in a trade this offseason

imagine if all pan out

fuckkk

Hanson
Teheran
Delgado
Minor
Vizcaino

Oh. my. Heyward.

I guess that pushes JJ into long relief.

Boras client, most people doubt we’ll deal with him when the time comes

indeed

i honestly wouldnt be surprised if we dealt him at the end of next season. The team might have actually been ready to deal him this offseason if Minor had progressed better in AA

This is relevant to my interests.

I'm starting to wonder if we won't see Delgado get promoted at some point this year.

He’s currently 5th in the league in ERA (2.88), 3rd in WHIP (0.98), 2nd in IP (40.2 IP), and first in Ks (45), and he’s got a 5.0 K/BB.

He got ~125 innings in Rome last year and has ~40 at Myrtle Beach this year. It seems like the organization wants their starters to get ~175-200 innings between A and A Advanced, so I bet Delgado spends at most 6 more starts at the Beach.

I would have thought Ortegano would be the first one out of Myrtle...

but he is really struggling. Does anyone know what’s wrong there, cause he was MUCH better at this level last year, and in AA. Weird, wild stuff.

He must be working on a pitch. I got this weird vibe about him when I saw MB, almost like what you get with a rehabbing Major Leaguer, like yeah, he’s a teammate, but not really.

Son of a biscuit!...

I’m not nearly as excited for Rome’s trip to Augusta in a couple weeks. Why Wren! Why could you not wait until June to promote him!

Whatever dude. That team is still full of great players. Heck, you don’t know who’s coming to take his place.

I know...

I get Bethancourt and Devall and Vizcaino and Lopez. It’s not like I won’t go to the games now, but I was just really, really excited to see Teheran pitch.

Congrats JT!

This is great. But I was hoping we would keep Teheran and Vizcanio together. From what CB was saying during spring training it sounds like Vizcaino needed a role model. Who knows maybe he’s doing better now.

Seemed like a completely different guy when I saw him in Rome a few weeks ago. July is good.

Anyone see this?

Wasn’t this a plot line in Major League II?

"Women... you can't live without them and they can't pee standing up".

i saw it when i fanshotted it this morning.

Here's a working llink to the story:

Yay, my trip down to Kinston in June to see the Pelicans just got a little more interesting!

At least when you make a "See what I did there?" joke you'll be covered.

See what I did there? (queue pelican)

(queue cue pelican)

I really changed between cue and queue 4 times.

In this case, it’s a stage cue. A queue is a line in Britain.

you so smart.

Trip to Kinston? Too far and out of the way man. Just go to Potomac! You can usually sneak in early and watch BP.

you forgot I live down in NC. 2 1/2 to Kinston for me, 3 1/2 to Woodbridge

hmmm…must be tired, 2 1/2 hours vs. 3 1/2 hours was what I was trying to say there, and I forgot, got some new roads, so its really only about 2 hours for me to Kinston now

I figured you meant hours. Yeah, after I posted I remembered you live in NC. Word then. Kinston it up.

Great news. One step closer to MLB

I really for some reason thought they would keep Teheran and Vizcaino together. Guess not lol
