Attempting to fix some of the offensive issues that have plagued the Myrtle Beach Pelicans this season, as well as plug a hole in center field, the Braves have signed Minor League free agent Mike Daniel. The 25 year old Daniel, once considered one of the more promising hitters in the Washington organization, was released by the Nationals on Tuesday.
Daniel has struggled the last few years; spending most of last season with AA Harrisburg, as well as 11 games with AAA Syracuse, he hit just .253 with a .692 OPS, along with 7 home runs, 44 RBI, and a career high 7 triples. This season, in 19 games for Harrisburg, he hit just .182 with a lowly .499 OPS. Daniel, who attended UNC, had his best season in 2007, when he hit .294 with a .820 OPS to go with 35 doubles, 11 home runs, 78 RBI, and 25 stolen bases.
In that 07 season he had his lone experience in the Carolina League, the league that Myrtle Beach plays in, hitting .296 with a.807 OPS and hit 20 doubles and 4 home runs, drvoe in 41 RBI, stole 16 bases in 71 games for Potomac. So, while he may no longer be the promising prospect he was several seasons ago, he should certainly be able to bolster the Pelicans lineup.

any chance Rose gets the call up to Myrtle Beach for CF by the end of the year?

Probably
His bat has cooled down a bit, but he needs to get his strike outs down, get those CS in check, and develop some type of XBH power!

Not now...
Daniel is a solid ballplayer and he is still only 25.

I got curious, so I looked it up. The Pelicans are the only Braves farm team that the Braves don’t own. Given that, the signing makes sense, but that’s the only reason it makes sense. At 25 years old and essentially being demoted back to A+ ball, Daniel isn’t really a major league prospect any more.

Nobody said he was. He’s just a guy who’ll probably play well and help the lineup.

And if a team is winning...
that helps a lot of things. Not everyone in the minors is a legit prospect, even at A ball. Not ideal, but sounds fine.

might be a stupid question
how did he play in the carolina league in 07 if he was playing college?

What I didn’t mention is that Mike is an outstanding human being and fits right in with the kind of high character people the Braves go out of their way to put on the field.

Hu-man be-ing? I thought baseball was played by a bunch of computers?

I wish I could phonetically spell out hu-man the way I read it. LOL indeed my friend.

I'd rather be a human do-ing

Nats fan stopping by to wish Daniel and his supporter well.
He’s organizational filler at this point and he would kind of get squeezed if we sent him back to high A. Our low A people are doing well. Plus I doubt the good citizens of Potomac could stomach another oldish organizational filler in the outfield. Half of this demotion is about Harrisburg’s putrid offense and a low tolerance for that bat when we’re probably trying to get some of our pitching prospects like Meyers, Thompson, and Milone some offensive support.

Man, that Potomac team is so old right now. I go up there a lot and when I was there on Monday I got confused, I could have sworn it was 2008.
