Another day, another complete game for the Braves.
Derek Lowe was solid on the mound today and would've gone much longer than 6 innings if it wasn't for a bad 6th inning. Lowe, for the first time in a while, kept his pitches down and had good movement on both the sinker and the slider. He was working on a 2-hit shutout through 5 innings, but the top and middle of the Brewers order got to Derek for 2 runs. He's been a bit Jekyll and Hyde this season, but the Braves will be in good shape if Lowe can continue pitching like he did Wednesday afternoon.
The Braves offense, which had both Jason Heyward and Eric Hinske in for the 2nd straight night, put up 9 runs, most of which came late in the ball game. The afore mentioned Hinske drove in the first run of the game with a RBI double in the 4th that just nearly missed going over the wall. The Braves added on to their lead again in the 6th when red-hot Troy Glaus drove in Jason Heyward from 2nd. Heyward truly created this run by stealing 2nd just a pitch before Glaus delivered the single up the middle.
The Brew Crew battled back in the 6th. Rickie Weeks and Jody Gerut led off the inning with back-to-back singles up the middle. Weeks then scored after veteran CF Jim Edmonds drove him in. After Prince Fielder juust missed a 3-run HR by a foot, he popped out to Nate McLouth in center. Jody Gerut then attempted to steal 3rd, but Brian McCann gunned him down for out #2 in the inning. This was huge play as Casey McGehee ripped a double to the right-center field gap which scored Edmonds from 1st. Derek Lowe was able to get out of the inning after Gregg Zaun popped out to Omar Infante at SS. Tie game 2-2.
The Braves' bats wouldn't be held down for long. After a leadoff double from Matt Diaz, Jason Heyward smashed a ball down the 1B line that was deflected by Prince Fielder. Brian McCann, rocking the glasses in a day game, hit a seeing-eye single up the middle to score Heyward from 2nd. The Braves led 4-2 after the 7th.
More offense came for the Bravos in the 8th. After an Omar Infante single, the suddenly scorching Brooks Conrad hit his 2nd HR of the series to RF off righty Carlos Villanueva. Braves lead 6-2 after the 8th.
The Braves weren't done though. Chipper Jones, making his first appearance since tweaking his groin Monday, drove in Jason Heyward with a PH RBI-double down the right field line. Chipper was batting from the left side and looked great. Brooks Conrad struck again in the 9th with a 2-RBI double that scored Brian McCann and Brandon Hicks, who was running for Chipper.
The bullpen was awesome for the Braves today. Peter Moylan, Takashi Saito and Billy Wagner each threw a scoreless inning to keep the potent Brewers lineup under control.
Braves win 9-2.

Game MVP(s):
Brooks Conrad - 2-for-5, HR(2) 4RBI
Derek Lowe - 6IP 6H 2ER 2BB/2K
Eric Hinske - 2-for-4, RBI; not a great stat line, but he continues to spark the Braves.
Jason Heyward - 1-for-3, 2BB 1RBI 3R
Game LVP(s):
Manny Parra, Carlos Villanueva and Trevor Hoffman - 3IP 7H 7ER 2BB/4K 1HR (Dang.)
Upcoming Game:
The Braves have tomorrow off (a much needed day, IMO.) and then kick off a 7-game home stand with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Kelly Johnson, Adam LaRoche and Blain Boyer will all make their debuts at Turner Field as non-Braves players. The DBacks came into Wednesday losing 5 straight and their pitching, especially the bullpen, has been awful in 2010. Let's hope the Braves can continue their hot hitting at The Ted.

Where be the trolls after a 3-game sweep?
Scott Coleman - May 12, 2010
is this the only thing you’re concerned about? haha

Is it too early to declare OGT a success?
justincredubil02 - May 12, 2010
oh, if we lose a game to the DBacks they’ll be back.
Scott Coleman - May 12, 2010
Not on my watch. Not on my watch….
justincredubil02 - May 12, 2010
OGT is going to have to be a continuous mission. It has had great success though.
vooodooo - May 12, 2010
Stay vigilent Justin.
NCChopper - May 13, 2010
Gone for the time being hopefully.
I really like this lineup that we’ve put out there the past two games..Hinske and Glaus BOTH in the lineup seems to work darn good.
Also glad to see Conrad start swinging like he did in his brief stint last year.
FWIW, McLouth needs to be sent down to work on his game or something. He’s not seeing the ball well in my opinion.
Tim Goad - May 12, 2010
His days might be numbered with Schafer’s return appearing to be inevitable.
mdhenshaw - May 12, 2010
Wouldn't mind that at all.
He’s definitely not doing anything for the team right now, so what could Schafer do to make it worse?
Tim Goad - May 12, 2010
McLouth......
can’t be sent down without his approval.
homerlanding - May 12, 2010
Tell he rides the pine til he goes down and works out whatever kinks are in his swing.
Tim Goad - May 12, 2010
him*
Tim Goad - May 12, 2010
And you suggest we replace him with....who?
Melky?
Scott Coleman - May 12, 2010
PLEASE GOD NO
That shit is NOT funny, dude. Don’t even play like that.
J-Freak - May 13, 2010
I said Schafer, whenever he's ready.
Tim Goad - May 13, 2010
No longer dead last in the NL East...
TIED!!!
As I was saying a few days ago… the situation still just aint that bad… two games below .500 in mid May, plenty of time.
SuperNewb - May 12, 2010
+1 (technically you can’t be “dead” in May—unless you’re the Orioles—but great to see the Braves looking good again!

Poor Astros.

what do we do when escobar/chipper get back?
prado
escobar
heyward
Chipper
B Mac
Glaus
Diaz/hinske
Nate/Melky
lund123 - May 12, 2010
I wouldn’t put Chipper at 4th…
dunnytwogloves - May 12, 2010
IMO
Prado
Heyward
Chipper
Glaus
McCann
Hinske/Diaz
Escobar
McLouth/Melky
I think he’ll keep Escobar low in the lineup for a little while at least.
TrailBraves49 - May 12, 2010
+1
kauf67 - May 13, 2010
I would be very surprised
to see Chipper not in the 3-hole
UGARedcoat13 - May 12, 2010
Chipper....
will bat third but I would like to see him bat second so he would get better pitches to hit.
homerlanding - May 12, 2010
Prado
Chipper
Heyward
Glaus
Hinske
McCann
Escobar
McLouth
Chipper is getting on base but not hitting for power so let him bat 2nd and give Heyward even more RBI opportunities.
redwards95 - May 12, 2010
I don’t see Schafer being brought up before September, regardless of what happens with Melky and McLouth. I think if they feel they need another outfielder, they’ll get it via trade. Schafer basically missed all of last year and he’s missed this year so far. No way they rush him back to the bigs.
Call me crazy, but I’ve never been big on Schafer. I think he’s a solid player in the minors and could be a legit 4th outfielder on a big league club……but I haven’t been too impressed with what I’ve seen from him in the minors or the bigs(I give him a pass on this because he did have a broken hand). But he’s not even close to a solution to the Braves outfield woes.
Undocorkscrew - May 12, 2010
opinion aside they’re moving him to AAA on Saturday. There’s no way he’ll rot away at that level until September if he’s playing well.
mdhenshaw - May 12, 2010
Opinion aside, I’m implying that I don’t think he’ll be tearing AAA up after being out of baseball for so long trying to return from a severe wrist injury.
Undocorkscrew - May 12, 2010
Opinion asideThat post was the definition of opinion.kreese555 - May 12, 2010
Umm….that’s the point. He replied to me with ‘opinion aside’ and then offered his opinion. I just did the exact same thing….
Undocorkscrew - May 12, 2010
He said they are moving him up to AAA on Sunday – that’s not an opinion, it’s a fact.
justincredubil02 - May 12, 2010
….he then said, and I quote, ’There’s no way he’ll rot away at that level until September if he’s playing well’…….which is an opinion.
Undocorkscrew - May 12, 2010
But the “opinion aside” was with the sentence about moving him up to AAA, indicating that it belongs with whatever else is in that sentence. The next sentence is a new train of though where he offers his opinion on said fact.
justincredubil02 - May 12, 2010
…..my original post was a reply to an opinion. I then gave my opinion and then another guy chimed in with ‘opinion aside…’ He then offered a fact, followed by his opinion on said fact.
Ok, this is getting too complicated. Point is, I don’t see Schafer being brought up before September unless he’s tearing AAA up.
Undocorkscrew - May 12, 2010
semantics!
can’t we all just get along?
Brave Neander - May 12, 2010
J-Freak - May 13, 2010
Agreed. I said in the game-thread that there is no room for him. We have Melky, Nate, Heyward, Diaz, Hinske and Infante who can all play the OF. It is highly unlikely that any will be traded before late June, and the only ones with any real trade value are Hinske and Infante, so that really doesn’t help the situation any.
Logan needs to be playing everyday and starting. I just don’t see that as an option for him right now with the MLB club.
justincredubil02 - May 12, 2010
Actually......
Schafer is a better ballplayer than all of those guys, sans Heyward, so there is a place for him.
homerlanding - May 12, 2010
Opinion aside, I believe he isn’t better than all of them
awix - May 12, 2010
Schafer has better upside than all of those guys, but currently, he is not a better player than McLouth or Melky, and I would even give Diaz the benefit of the doubt at this point.
justincredubil02 - May 12, 2010
You said Logan. You let Jon Miller win.
I’m disappointed in you

TheBravestWay To Block A Decent Prospect - May 12, 2010
Can one of you guys with some more knowledge lend your two cents to this? I just don’t get why everyone is writing Jordan off? I mean, he is still just a kid! Fact is, when he has been healthy he has been a good player everywhere he has been. I’m not saying this kid is an all-star or anything like that. But, I do think he would be a great addition to the future of this team! CB/Yon/MVHS, you all seem to be really up to speed on our young guys. What do y’all think?
Also, great to see everyone come together today! Especially excited to see D. Lowe have a decent outing! I think he is a competitor and I bet his play has been bothering him. Go Braves!
jdmarine - May 12, 2010
I’m not writing him off. He was one of our top prospects before he got hurt and tried to play through it. He lost a year because he tried to gut it out. He’s played well when he’s been healthy. Confidence isn’t the kid’s problem. If healthy he could be our long term CF. The front office is keenly aware of this fact.
mdhenshaw - May 12, 2010
No one is writing him off (except for undocorkscrew), but he essentially hadn’t faced any sort of competitive pitching for almost a year. Most people think that he’ll be at AA or AAA until July to August. If he hits really well and our outfield – Heyward continues to suck, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him around mid-June.
acie4mvp - May 12, 2010
I’m not writing him off….
By the way, what’s this ‘wrongly accused’ stuff? Has it been proven that he was wrongly accused of taking PED’s or is that just speculation?
Anyway, I just haven’t been too impressed with what I’ve seen from him. Yes, he’s just a kid and I was only speaking on his potential 2010 call-up. I just think it’s too early to call on him before September is all.
Now, if he’s absolutely tearing AAA up by July, sure…..give him a shot. But he’s been out of baseball for a while and I just don’t think that’s going to happen.
Undocorkscrew - May 12, 2010
Schafer has denied it and the stats absolutely back him up. He was better in AA (after his suspension) than he was at Myrtle Beach (before the suspension) and his ISO power increased once he reached Mississippi. I admit that it is speculation, but Schafer was suspended based on speculation.
Sorry I called you out, btw. I don’t want to be a jerk. No hard feelings?
acie4mvp - May 12, 2010
Haha, no hard feelings whatsoever. I’m new here and expect the regulars to give the new guys a hard time on any message board or comment section of any website.
Actually, I didn’t even factor in the numbers before and after the suspension. Good point…
Undocorkscrew - May 12, 2010
It has never been proven that he took the PEDs, and he insists that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people, but that he never took anything – even after being suspended, he insists he did nothing wrong. I am willing to believe him.
Personally, I hope they keep him in AAA all season long. I think he needs all the conditioning and time that he can get. The last thing we want is to rush him back before he is physically or mentally ready.
justincredubil02 - May 12, 2010
Fully agree with keeping him in AAA the full year(although a September call-up could prove useful and wouldn’t do anything to damage his progress)
Undocorkscrew - May 12, 2010
facts
- MLB doesn’t have an HGH blood test
- he wasn’t discovered to be using HGH by government or MLB officials
- MLB has an anonymous “hotline” managers and players in baseball can call. someone calling in and said schafer was using HGH
- using this information, and this information alone, schafer was suspended for 50 games
atl192485 - May 12, 2010
My two cents...
i really don’t know, to be perfectly honest. Jordan was pretty damn solid for us in ‘09 before he busted his wrist. Everyone on here should know how much a bad wrist can slow you down. Freddie Freeman busted his wrist last season and was awful because of it. I have a bad left wrist and it’s been bothering me for 2 years now…and I only play baseball or basketball on occasion with friends. Nothing close to the grind of a Major/Minor league season.
As you said, he’s a kid and has a ton of time left. He’s still only 23. I think Braves fans are a bit spoiled because they’ve seen guys like Heyward and Hanson come into the league at such young ages (20 and 22). There’s nothing wrong with coming (back) into the Majors at 23 or 24 years old.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if you think Jordan Schafer isn’t going to play a part in the Braves’ future, I really think you’re going to be wrong. If he’s healthy, he has as much natural talent and ability as anyone on the Braves’ roster not named Heyward or McCann.
And even if he isn’t the stud hitter we all think he could be, he’s still a + defender, baserunner and at least an average hitter at the ML level.

justincredubil02 - May 12, 2010
Tried that before but he can never get out of the inning.
bpk228480 - May 12, 2010
bwahahaha
kreese555 - May 12, 2010
I think Schafer is going to be a solid regular (at least)
but I wouldn’t bring him up soon. He needs to get used to the grind of a season again and get his rhythm back. I’d say a bare minimum of 2 months in AAA, and I’d really prefer the rest of the season. If he tries to push himself too hard, he might just reinjure the wrist. For now, we’ve got to think more about his future and less about how our CF has been a black hole.
That all might change in a month if he’s hitting .500 in AAA and McLouth and Melky still aren’t hitting, but I prefer the cautious approach.
Jacob Peterson - May 12, 2010
I’m Justin and I approve this message.
justincredubil02 - May 12, 2010
Truely.
With a wrist injury, no need to push him, and like you said, he’s been away for a while so kid gloves is the prudent approach. However, knowing how hard he works, he could force the decision upon the coaches by dominating the minors.

What a series! I hate off days when we are winning.
gramsey712 - May 12, 2010
I do too
but this team really needs it. Keep this in mind too…the Braves have essentially 2 nights and a day off at home in Atlanta after completing a 3-game sweep. The DBacks have lost 5 in a row (possibly 6) and won’t get into Atlanta until tomorrow afternoon. That gives the Braves a big advantage both mentally and physically.
Scott Coleman - May 12, 2010
Oh, I totally agree
My complaining is for selfish reasons only!!!!! I wanna see some more Braves offense!

Random aside
Am I the only person who really dislikes Rachel Nichols? Every report she gives ends in a pause before the last two words. (Was watching ESPN where they’re talking LeBron).
“Regardless of what Brett says now, it’s almost a sure thing we’ll be talking about this again (pause) in two months. I’m Rachel Nichols, ESPN.”
Sure she’s a pretty face and all, but that annoying little tic that signals the end of her commentary makes her almost unwatchable.

Bronn - May 12, 2010
Could the Rockies have our leadoff?...
between EY Jr and Dexter Fowler? What would one of them cost from Colorado?
Mr. Sanchez - May 12, 2010
This is kind of intriguing...
But I think they want them both.
EY will most likely play second sooner than later, Barmes has one more year left and I don’t think the Rockies are really keen on keeping him once he hits free agency. Power is improving, but the rest of his offense has regressed over the years.
Fowler is and will be in center for awhile. CarGo, Smith and Spillborghs will round out that outfield once Hawpe leaves after the season.
To be honest, I’ve never been that big on Fowler. Seems like he’ll have a great game every now and again, but there’s no power and he really doesn’t steal as much as you’d believe. Probably quite a bit more than Jordan will, but no there’s no pop in the bat. Not a great trade-off, especially since Fowler hasn’t been a high-average, high-OBP player. But he’s still young, and I’d expect to begin seeing improvement this year or next.

This is just a fun team to watch
…. especially when they’re winning. Between the team’s reaction to Jay-Hey’s Opening Day home run, the walk-off against Colorado, the silent treatment walk-off, Medlen and Moylan on the Kiss Cam in St. Louis, and the Moylan’s Klondike bar microphone, you can tell that this is a team that is having fun playing baseball together. Now that it seems like they might have started to put the winning pieces together, it should (hopefully) only get better.

Outscored them 28-7. That’ll work. Hey Scott, I’ve got some stats for your series Good/Bad/Ugly. Here is the Brewers’ bullpen line for the series:
9.1 IP, 17 R, 20 H, 9 BB, 7 K, and 3 HR.
That works out to a 16.39 ERA and a 3.11 WHIP. They also got only 1 scoreless appearance (Coffey on Tues., 0.2 IP, 1 H) out of 9 total appearances. Not real good.

I vote Hinske stays in the lineup.

Let’s do a Fan Confidence Poll right now!
Bravely going forward - May 12, 2010
Um Hell Yes
That’s hows it done Bravos. This site was starting to get depressing, every time I looked we were talking about another problem.
McCann and McWill - May 12, 2010
So once healthy we can assume a lineup of....
Prado
Heyward
Chipper
McCann (vs RH) / Glaus (vs LH)
Glaus (vs RH) / McCann (vs LH)
Esco
Hinske (vs RH) / Diaz (vs LH)
McLouth (vs RH) /Melky (vs LH)
With a little Infante and Ross sprinkled in.
Mr. Sanchez - May 12, 2010
im lovin it
dc_allday - May 12, 2010
I know the three-hole is “Chipper’s spot,” but Heyward has left absolutely no doubt that he is the number one hitter on this team. I think it’s about time Chipper willingly handed the reigns over and batted second or fifth. Heyward’s RBI opportunities are going to be fewer if he’s batting in the 2 spot. He’s way too valuable to our offense to have him hitting somewhere besides one of the prime RBI spots 3-5.
J-Freak - May 12, 2010
Yes.
Totally agree. Heyward needs to come up with more RBI opportunities.
yaggiefresh - May 13, 2010
Way to go, guys. I didn’t get to see much of the game, but I’m pleased as punch at the outcome. Now to see if my boys can replicate the luck on the West Coast tonight.
TheLetter2 - May 12, 2010
Javy Vazquez picked up a JVL today. It’s not just the Braves that can’t support him!
BraveSaluki - May 12, 2010
Ugh, why do I have such ill ideas all day everyday...
Considering the way Jay-Hey has been tearing it up and the amount of walks that Chipper takes… How does this lineup work?
Prado
Chipper
Heyward
McCann
Glaus
Esco (when he returns)
Diaz
McLouth
arrite arrite, i get it. Chipper is our 3-hitter and he’s the face of the franchise….blah blah blah. Its about time that Cox realized that his game has declined too much to have him in the three hole. He walks all the time and he’s a smart hitter (obviously) so the two spot sounds perfect. Plus, Cox can be like “Uhhh yeah. Sabermetrics sez the 2 hitter is the best… soo uhh, yeah im putting chipper there. Next question… lol” If we don’t see chipper in the 2 spot this year, hopefully we see it next year. Feel me?

I've been saying this for a couple weeks now
Only swap BMac/Glaus and make that a Hinske/Diaz and McLouth/Melky platoon and you have yourself a lineup.
Scott Coleman - May 12, 2010
I'm more amazed by Heyward every day.
I would be shocked if he ever, ever hits lower then 5th in the lineup. He gets put at the top of the order, and now he’s Ricky freakin Henderson. Wouldn’t be surprised if Jason threw 3 perfect games next week.
Frozen Fan - May 12, 2010
I would. What makes you think he’s gonna fuck up the other 4?
J-Freak - May 13, 2010
Heyward for Cy! I’m starting the campaign right here.
UMDBHIK - May 13, 2010
nice sweep
very nice…can’t wait for the homestand

Pitching
Hats off to the staff. That’s one of the best, if not the best, offense in the NL right now. Shut them down the whole series.
Favorite moment of the series: Hanson plunking Braun with a fastball, watching Braun go through the “tough guy” scenario at first base with the trainer, and then Hanson trying a pickoff on the next pitch. Classic old school baseball.
kalesi - May 13, 2010
Every time Hanson threw over to first, I laughed and loved him even more.
I thought in baseball (unless there is blood spewing) you’re not supposed to even rub where the ball hit until you get back to the dugout.
NCChopper - May 13, 2010
Agreed.
I laughed out loud at that. Like Heyward, Big Red gets it.
Sam Jethroe - May 13, 2010
Absolutely this.
I pointed this out in several other threads. It’s one of the unwritten rules of baseball. I’ve felt obliged to mention it since so many people have been bringing those up lately.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - May 14, 2010
Man do I love sweeps!
Can’t wait for Friday where the team can take the field at the Ted after a road trip that ended on a great note.
We’re finally playing as a “team” and getting it done. April will soon be a distant memory.
NCChopper - May 13, 2010
Sweeeeeeeeep!
What a difference three games can make. Looking at the the upcoming schedule May is looking more and more fun. I applaud Bobby for making the neccesary lineup changes going into this series and sitcking with the hot lineup yesterday. The lineup used in the series was well balanced and good enough to be competitive every game. Keep it up Bravos!
CharlotteChop - May 13, 2010
Hinske
I’m a big fan of Hinske taking PAs away from Cabrera and McLouth, because those two guys have just been awful at the plate. That said, Hinske is probably gonna be coming back down to Earth soon. His BABIP as of today is .419, but even when that comes back down, he’ll still probably be OPSing better than either one of our other options there.
OrangeBritches - May 13, 2010
Why does everyone lump Nate in with Melky and somehow, they leave out Diaz? Diaz has been much worse than Melky. Nate has been much better than either of those two.
justincredubil02 - May 13, 2010
So I set my DVR to record the game yesterday, right? Tonight I settle into the man cave with a double baconator from Wendy’s and open up my playlist and no game! So I’m like WTF DirecTV. I find out that the recording was cancelled by DirecTV due to a “programming update”.
I would just like to say that DirecTV and everyone who works there can go fornicate themselves with an iron stick.
UMDBHIK - May 13, 2010
haha
you can come watch it at my house…and yes, that means I’m rewatching the game from yesterday because i was having Braves withdrawals.
