From the DOB blog this afternoon, a quote from Chipper Jones:
"I called my dad the other day and said, over my 17-year career, how many times have I hit .220 and not been ready to hang myself?" Jones said. "He said, ‘Never. You’ve never been satisfied with hitting like that.’
"I said, but I’m not really disappointed with the way I’m swinging the bat now. I’m pretty happy with it."
That sums it up, he's seeing the ball well, things just aren't dropping for him. From DOB's point of view, this means Chipper is no longer talking retirement.

Schafer is making progress...
A healthy hitting Schafer would be a welcome addition to the club in July.

I love Chipper
hello I am a die hard Red Sox fan but the Braves are my NL team I think I will be here often!
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
you picked a good blog to join.
and if you’d like, we can get Andruw Jones back so we can finally pull off that CoCo Crisp and Jon Lester for Andruw deal.
Scott Coleman - May 11, 2010
haha
no, you are not getting Lester!!!
and Coco is on Oakland now.
and thank you!
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
We welcome all Red Sox fans….just wash your hands please.
MikeHamptonStillOwesMeMoney - May 11, 2010
dont worry I will
I am a Braves fan to!
btw funny username
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
Haha! Just a little baseball humor. Anyone that recognizes all Chipper has done for our organization is alright with me. He’s been playing his tail off for the Braves since 1995!
MikeHamptonStillOwesMeMoney - May 11, 2010
Chipper is one of my favorite players in baseball.
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
I agree! But, unfortunately, we are in the minority. I think Braves fans talk more crap about him than other teams fans do.
MikeHamptonStillOwesMeMoney - May 11, 2010
that makes no sense. Chipper is awesome.

As a Colts fan I seem to be conditioned not to like any Boston team and that goes with the Yankee’s red headed stepchild.
Welcome to the blog and I have no beef with you, but I loathe Boston sports to an almost irrational level.

Thank you
haha dont worry. I dont hate the Colts or Peyton Manning, though I am a Pats fan.
Its ok if you hate Boston sports, Im used to it by now.
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
welcome!
youre like the opposite of me. I am a die hard Braves fan but I cheer for the Red Sox in the AL. I love Big Papi and if Youk is pretty cool too. Anyway, really hoping you guys can take the Yankees down this year.
Shoert - May 11, 2010
Cool!
Big Papi is done, sadly :(
Youk rules. Hes one of my favorites.
Oh I hope we beat the Yankees to!
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010

southman - May 11, 2010
lol I know :)
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
welcome bestbostonsports
on this blog you get southern hospitality. In case your wondering, I’m rooting for your celtics against LeBron until they play Orlando :)
southman - May 11, 2010
thank you
Celtics rule
What about the hawks? ;)
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
I love them
however, I’m shocked that they got swept in the second round AGAIN! that’s why I’m rooting for you against LeBron until you play Orlando
southman - May 11, 2010
So are you a Magic fan to?
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
can be
only when they’re not playing the ATL
southman - May 11, 2010
ah
My wetern conference team was the Thunder.
But Celtics all the way
Im hoping the Celtics win and play Orlando so I can go to a game.

He may be seeing the ball well, but he isn’t hitting it very well. A lot of weak grounders and lazy flyouts.
bpk228480 - May 11, 2010
The problem to me
isn’t so much his swing as his approach. He’s been letting way too many good pitches go. Sure, he’s walking a ton—even more than usual—but like many of the other Braves hitters, he seems at a loss as far as deciding which are the best pitches to swing at.
Still, I think he figures it out. He’ll never be a 25-HR guy again, but he can be a solid .280 / .400 / .400 guy for another couple years. That is just fine for the top of the order.
Jacob Peterson - May 11, 2010
I;ll trade you for Ortiz.
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
Ugh
No thanks times a million.
Jacob Peterson - May 11, 2010
exactly
dont complain about Chipper
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
I'm not,
believe me. I think he’ll get it back together.
Jacob Peterson - May 11, 2010
I do to.
hes to good.
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
I almost posted a fanpost about this last night
I agree. In fact, I think a great deal of the TEAM’s problems at the plate right now are mostly pitch selection rooted. Well, that and some bad luck. I wish I could say I’ve had the time to do the analysis, but unfortunately time is not something I have a lot of right now. Still, it would be really cool to find out just how many “borderline” or out of the zone pitches we are making contact with.
Here’s what I’ve seen lately, and not just from Chipper.
- pitch 1 / Strike looking right down the middle
- pitch 2 / ball out of zone
- pitch 3 / foul ball, pitch out of zone
- pitch 4 / weak contact out on pitchers pitch
scstrato - May 11, 2010
Good
Let’s drop all this crazy retirement talk. There is way too much money on the table for Chipper to just walk away.
homerlanding - May 11, 2010
Money's clearly not an issue for him
Not that I want him to retire, but that’s not going to get in his way.
Jacob Peterson - May 11, 2010
Agreed! If he is really done, I think Larry Wayne will step aside. With that said, if he does, man I’d love to see him join the coaching ranks!
jdmarine - May 11, 2010
call him Chipper and nothing else.
bestbostonsports - May 11, 2010
No offense, it’s outta love that I call him Larry Wayne:) Him and Dale are my Two fav’s of all time! Well, with David Justice running a very close third(please don’t hate on me for loving Justice!)
jdmarine - May 11, 2010
i like him to retire, abandon his money and then resign with us.
Braves Biceps - May 11, 2010
So, is this telling Tim Kurghjghghghghggen to STFU?
justincredubil02 - May 11, 2010
Why doesn’t he just lead-off? The only things he’s good at anymore are slap-hitting and working walks.
TradeAndruw - May 11, 2010
What’s his OPS?
justincredubil02 - May 11, 2010
.770
Most is from OBP. I’m not knocking him, I would love to have someone getting on base at the top of the lineup.
TradeAndruw - May 11, 2010
This news will put one big bumble bee in Beard’s bombastic bonnet.
buzzdeadwax - May 11, 2010
I'm for Chipper as next year's manager of the Braves, just like Mike Socioca or however the fuck you spell his name
jimmontg - May 12, 2010
Meh
I’d love to have someone younger who can man third consistently, but Chipper will always be Chipper.
