Since we presented the Mississippi Braves preview earlier in the day, here is a follow-up about one of the stars of that team, last year's first-round draft pick Mike Minor:
"From what I had read and heard about Minor, I have been really surprised and impressed with his fastball," [M-Braves Manager Phillip Wellman] says. "He throws a lot harder than I thought he would. I think his fastball is his best pitch."
A good fastball, plus command of three other pitches. It's going to be fun to see what Minor can do this year.

By the way... yes we did just replace the Talking Chop logo with you-know-who's homerun.

Love the new logo.

damint, I don’t think I’m going to do anything else today but look at that logo

That is one hell of a logo.
I think Minor is going to be good this year. You can argue with the pick all you want based on his perceived “low ceiling”, but given Minor’s nearness to the bigs and his “high floor”, I think you can’t really say it’s a bad pick. Mediocre maybe. Safe, sure. But not “bad”.

I like where you are going with the Minor argument. Yes he was a safe pick and not a high upside guy with that #7 pick, but I think the Braves knew they have so much high ceiling guys at the lower levels, that they wanted a sure thing that could help quickly, and bridge that gap until the high ceiling guys get to the bigs, if they ever do. I’m all for taking upside and best player available, but sometimes you do have to hedge your bets, especially considering over half of first round high school pitchers never make it out of the minor leagues.

I wonder who managed to manufacture that fine animated GIF file?

I really have no understanding of what that means but it supplies me with one of the strangest mental images I have ever had.

I am fully prepared to eat my words on the draft.
And I hope I eat them for a good time to come.
soup du jour - April 7, 2010
Me too
But he still has to prove himself worthy of the number 7 pick. Talk is cheap to me.
Jay212033 - April 7, 2010
I love Wellman. Does that mean that Minor is not a soft tossing lefty?
I hope he does make it to the bigs soon, cause the Braves don’t have a lefty starter.
I heart logo.
Sparhawk - April 7, 2010
...I just noticed that.
That’s pretty interesting, but yeah, we don’t have a lefty starter. Now, granted, you need to put your 5 best out there regardless of what appendage he throws it with, but it would be nice to have a lefty waiting in the wings.

Speaking of Logos...
does anyone else have that stupid ad for masn at the top of the screen. It blocks over text from the site. If I knew or cared what masn was then I’d boycott it. That’s effective advertising!
vooodooo - April 7, 2010
MASN broadcasts O’s and Nats games where I live.

Someone Help Me Please..
I don’t get to the TED much so I don’t know for sure but I’m getting tickets for the last series and I want to make sure of something. Sections 131-139 have row 12 as the first row, right? 13-2nd 14-3rd?
JKowalek - April 7, 2010
Check out the Turner Field Guide on the left hand side of the front page, near the bottom. I like the third base side because it’s in the shade.
gondeee - April 7, 2010
Gondeee’s got a great point, plus you can look into the Braves dugout from that side. But if you’re looking to be near Heyward and can stand the sun, then I recommend 125 so you can see his face instead of his back. And if you’re in the first few rows, it’s a pretty good view of anyone running to first.
Lizziebeth - April 7, 2010
thanks alot guys, but is it row 12 is really 1st? kind of backwards?
JKowalek - April 7, 2010
here's some info I found:
* Children 3 years and older must have a ticket.
* Handicapped seating is located throughout the park.
* All sections are divided into right and left sections (ex. 101R and 101L). The right side starts with seat 1 on the aisle and numbers go inward to the middle. The left side starts with seat 101 on the aisle and number go inward to the middle.
* Some areas of Turner Field have covered seating, including the Terrace Level starting at row 9, the Golden Moon Casino Level starting at row 4, and the Terrace Reserved Level starting at row 6.
* Most sections start with row 1, except for the sections directly behind the dugouts, which start at row 6. Some outfield sections start at row 4.
* Braves dugout sits along the right field line, below sections 109 – 117. The Visitors dugout sits along the left field line, below sections 110 – 118.
* The Dugout Level runs between sections 101 – 115 and 102 – 116, and also 117L and 118R. There is wait service on this level.
* The Golden Moon Casino Level runs between sections 307 – 337, and 308 – 336.
* The Field Level runs between sections 119 – 129, and 120 – 128.
* The Terrace Level runs between sections 201 – 221, and 202 – 224.
* The Golden Moon Casino Pavilion Level runs between sections 229 – 241, and 232 – 246.
* The Terrace Reserved Level runs between sections 223 – 227, and 226 – 230.
* The Field/Terrace Pavilion Level runs between sections 131 – 151, and 132 – 150.
* The Upper Box Level runs between sections 401 – 415, and 402 – 418.
* The Upper Reserved Level runs between sections 417, 419, 420 and 422.
* Standing Room Only Tickets are available as well, allowing you to watch the game along the walkways or from the Chop House and Top of the Chop.
But, I do believe I remember seeing some tickets for sale that were for the first row in the outfield, and it was a number in the teens. You may find out by checking StubHub or some other ticket resellers.
sddbaker - April 7, 2010
I researched a bit more...
and Row 12 is the first row in some of the right field sections.
sddbaker - April 7, 2010
Thanks alot everyone.
JKowalek - April 7, 2010
Love the new logo.
However, he may provide you with so many to choose from you may have to rotate ’em.
