Brett Oberholtzer couldn't earn the win tonight, but he did earn a promotion to Myrtle Beach.
Gwinnett 1, Durham 9
Todd Redmond got knocked around pretty good in this one, surrendering 3 homers to the potent Bulls offense in just 4 innings of work. Todd's a workhorse and I'm sure it's been a long time since he couldn't go at least 5 innings in a game. The G-Braves' offense couldn't muster much of anything as Matt Young accounted for the team's only 2 hits, slamming out a pair of doubles and scoring on an RBI groundout by Freddie Freeman.
Mississippi 0, Montgomery 8, game 1
The M-Braves fell in the first game of the double header as Minor Minor managed to give up 7 runs without giving up any earned runs. Of course, this is a case where you have to ask the question, if the pitcher is the one who makes the errors, shouldn't the runs be earned? Minor is having an interesting year so far and things just keep getting stranger. The only thing worth noting on the offensive side is that Donnel Linares had to leave the game after striking out in the top of the first, likely due to injury. Hopefully whatever the issue is will heal quickly.
Mississippi 7, Montgomery 3, game 2
The offense showed up for the second game and Mauro Gomez was the best player of the double header, combinining to go 3-6 with 2 doubles, a homer and 3 RBI while raising his average from .192 to .237. Cody Johnson finally does some damage in AA, raising his average from .200 to .241 with a 3 hit day that included a home run and no strikeouts. Randy Gress gets the start at shortstop and stays hot, collecting a pair of hits to maintain his .500 average. I'm really curious to see how long he can keep this up.
Myrtle Beach 2, Kinston 15
Cole Miles missed a few weeks of games, but has been hot since returning, going 6 for his last 17 with 3 stolen bases. Gerry Rodriguez remains consistent, with at least 1 hit in 9 of his last 10 games, and an RBI in 3 straight games. Cole Rohrbough continues to frustrate and it really might be worth asking if he'll ever get back to the form he showed a few years ago. Van Pope threw his first scoreless inning as a professional pitcher.
Rome 2, Charleston 3
Kyle Rose continues to get on base, even collecting his first extra base hit of the week with a triple, but he's also caught stealing again, this time on a pickoff. I know it's early, and I fully believe that at any point things are going to turn around and he's going to start running wild and be unstoppable, but for the moment it's an alarming trend. Brett Oberholtzer puts in another great start, even if he gave up a few too many hits. In fact, his start was good enough to earn him a promotion to Myrtle Beach. Cory Rasmus seems to have found a place in the bullpen, as he throws up a few more scoreless innings.

It would be sad to me from a Minor League fan standpoint. I thought a lot of the pitchers from the 06 draft would be studs for the Braves, like Evarts, Locke, Rasmus and Rohrbough. I didn’t expect much out of that Medlen kid though, so its a good thing my thoughts didn’t curse him.

Rasmus seems to be bouncing back strong after the surgery. But the lefty group, was it Evarts, Locke, Rohrbough and Rodgers? Those guys have all gone down fast, be it to injury or just poor performance.
That 07 Danville staff hasn’t exactly all panned out as expected huh, but it sure was a talented crew.

Feliz, Rohrbough, Evarts, Rodgers, Locke, Gearrin, Ortegano, Osuna. Not hard to see how all that talent went 48-20.

I was at the game, and while Redmond was shelled, three of those runs are, according to my wife, all Brent Cleavans fault. He took some very bad routes to balls in RF in the 1st inning. One he made a catch on, but was in no position to throw it in because he took his time getting to the ball. The other he had a very slow jump and pulled up to catch the ball on the hop. The second led to run #2 in the 1st and would have been out #3 avoiding runs #3 and 4. Redmond was quite a bit better then I expected, even on an off day. He mixed his pitches well. Durham has a very good team that fouled off a ton of pitches to wear him down before doing their damage.
On the offensive side things were pretty pathetic. Gregor, Freddie, Matt Young, and Hicks put together some good at bats, but the Bulls pitcher Aneury Rodriguez was pretty damned good.

Thanks for the in game info. Yeah, I’m a fan of Todd’s. He’s a very solid pitcher with a great game plan. I don’t think he’ll ever be a star, but I could definitely see him filling out the back of a rotation for a number of years.

I know. I kind of wanted to put him on the hot sheet because he had 11.2 scoreless and struck out 12, but he also walked 9 and gave up 7 unearned runs, mostly because of his 2 errors. It’s gonna be a process with him, that’s for sure.

Yeah and I have always had an issue with the concept of unearned runs. I mean I can understand if a run scores specifically because an error was made (IE chippers play yesterday) but with Minor he gave up 7 runs when he still could have gotten out of the inning. (I’m not even sure why the last 4 runs weren’t earned considering he made the error with 0 outs).
Also this just in, Mike Stanton is really good too. He hit 3 homers today and had 2 yesterday and I am sure he is OPSing over 1200 right now. He also has a 17/17 K/BB rate. If there is any position player who might be a better hitter in the majors than Heyward it will be Stanton. These two remind me so much of Andruw and Vlad when they were coming up. The debate was always which one will be better and they will be playing against each other for years because they are in the same division just like Druw and Vlad.

I think the only thing that keeps Stanton out of Heyward’s class is that he isn’t anywhere near as polished a hitter, mostly due to playing so much football in HS. He’s every bit as imposing a physical specimen, has just as much power, is just as good in the outfield, but his eye and fundamental hitting has a long way to go to reach J-Hey’s status.
I feel very fortunate that I’ve been able to see Mike play a number of times the last few years. He really is a special player and he’s a great person so it’s very easy to root for him. I’d love to see the 2010s dominated by a Braves/Marlins/Heyward/Stanton rivalry.
