Braves Quote For The Day

From a Baseball America (sub. req.) farm report on the Braves, and prospect Craig Kimbrel:

"Craig has been much more consistent with his mechanics this spring, which has allowed him to have much better control and command of all his pitches," farm director Kurt Kemp said. "He's impressed our coaches with the way he's willing to consider new ideas and try different things."

It can't be said enough how important it is for young players to listen to their coaches and try to make the adjustments that are recommended. This can be a hard thing for a young player to do, especially if that player has had success with the way they've been doing it.

We saw this with Cole Rohrbough, who I interviewed earlier this spring. He was very successful early in his pro career, and the team wanted him to change his mechanics to put less stress on the arm and create a more repeatable delivery, but it wasn't until he struggled the last two years that he finally realized he needed to change his delivery, which he did this off-season.

It adds to the good impression I already have of Kimbrel that he knows he needs to be more consistent and he's taking the advice of the coaches to improve his mechanics -- even while having success on the mound this spring.

Kimbrel is nasty. He may be our best reliever not named Moylan, Medlen or Wagner right now. I really think he’ll have an impact on this season. But we certainly have to keep him down until June at least.

There's really no reason to bring him up yet....

unless a significant injury occurs to someone like Moylan or Saito, we have plenty of depth to cover especially once Proctor is good to go. If Jojo proves he belongs, and the rest of the staff stays healthy, Kimbrel can be kind of an ace in the hole for the playoff run like several others have been the last decade or two.

I want to see him get some innings and Gwinnett. I guess I’m really saying come back in June and see whether he’s ready. I just really think he will be and at that point if anyone in our pen is struggling it may be hard to hold Kimbrel down. If his command really has improved, well that’s just scary.

Craig Kimbrel 2010 =

Francisco Rodriguez 2002

In other words, a late-season call-up who adds extra firepower to a World Series champion team.

Although with my limited knowledge, my guess is that will be the end of his comparisons to K-Rod
Yeah, we're not the Mets here

We want our young pitchers to be good for more than 1 or 2 seasons.

I hope he’s ready sooner than later. I don’t have a good feeling about most of our bullpen.

My hope is that,

Chavez and Jo-Jo, pitch better than they did in ST, especially Chavez, he was horrible. We get the chance to see if the
“he had a bad spring last year, but was lights out when the regular season began” is to be the case this season.

What a luxury to have so many big league ready arms at AAA.

Kimbrel is really a nice guy having worked for the Gwinnett Braves when he came up last year. He has good work ethic and, as the article showed, is always willing to listen to people to get better. Hope he has a long career but look forward to seeing him in Gwinnett for the short time he will be there this year.

I love when I hear stuff like this...

It’s such a nice antidote to the Frenchy/Andruw/Furcal style of “I play how I play, why should I listen to advice?” The Braves coaches up and down the line know what they are doing. Players who listen to them will have better careers than they otherwise would have.

I'd rather have Thurston...

he’s more proven, but whatever, Conrad isnt bad.

Career .225 AVG and .630 OPS in 380 ABs. Career .221 AVG and .607 OPS in 68 PH ABs. Proven doesn’t seem to be worth much.

So he's...

a professional fielder?

And average at best at that.
