2 innings down. 7 runs for the Braves. DLowe was very lucky in the 1st inning and great in the 2nd inning.
Oh, and everyone besides Nate McLouth has a hit.
Bottom of the 5th. Our offense is alive, scoring 8 runs on 11 hits. Derek Lowe got a ton of run support and continues to be one of the biggest $60MM dollar busts in Braves history.
Everyone on the Braves has a hit.
Discuss.

Direct TV Update
So, the Installer just got here, and informed me that he was not told to bring any hardware for me to get local channels, or the second DVR that I was told over the phone that I would get.
After calling up the Customer Support, he handed the phone off to me. They told me in order to get what I wanted (Local channels on 3 tvs and DVR on 2) that it would be an extra $250. I told them that I am going to thank the installers for coming out, and give Dish Network a call and tell them to turn my service back on.
FUCK DTV!

Jareth Cutestory - April 16, 2010
Nope. You would think that from a customer service perspective AND a business perspective that they would waive the $250 charge and get nearly $2,400 over the length of the contract, instead of getting nothing.

yup.

Jareth Cutestory - April 16, 2010
It's the new recipe.
TennesseeQuackAttack8 - April 16, 2010
i know...
and what i’m saying about the “new” recipe is that it seems as if they use the same seasoning on the crust as they do on the cheesy bread with a buttery-type glaze.
but i do think parmesan is part of the new cheese mix on the pies
new sauce for sure, too

That's weird, I think the installers are independent contractors though
so sometimes the details can be lost in the fray. And the person you talk to when setting it up is a salesman, and after they sell you they turn you over to the technicians or whatever. All in all, it’s still a cable/satellite company so there’s gonna be problems, but the packages are unbeatable.

"phraseology" - Smoltz
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010
He did that on purpose
And made fun of his “thirdiary” comment in the process.
Bronn - April 16, 2010
I know. It’s still amusing, because of the “thirdiary” and “irregardless”
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010
phraseology
is actually a word. So that’s a fail.
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Perhaps I accidentally spelled it correctly, then.
Because the word he pronounced is not the correct pronunciation of a valid word.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010

justincredubil02 - April 16, 2010
Wow
I mean, I totally agree that those games should be shorter… But that is some hilarious hypocrisy
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010

the team knows they will have to score plenty of runs when he’s on the mound so the offense is never complacent.
That or he keeps facing shitty opposing pitchers

decent pitchers having shitty days

I was always more of a Walmart guy myself, but sure.
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
+1 for you good sir.
Jose Rodriguez - April 16, 2010
That was like the first inside pitch Heyward has seen in a week.
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
GIDP, Melky... :(
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010
That’s about right…
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
Really ripped that one Melk….
JadedMayberry - April 16, 2010
Heyward
setting up the rest of the league to think he is susceptible to high inside fastballs. Very machiavaellian.
!Vive la Francoeur! - April 16, 2010
Reverse psychology.
UGARedcoat13 - April 16, 2010
Ok y'all - new avatar for me - nobody's noticed.
Here are the shoes larger. What do ya think?

And, before you ask… size 7-1/2
NCChopper - April 16, 2010
lol, awesome
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
Where did you get them?
HEYJUDE - April 16, 2010
They are KEDS. I wear them to baseball games and they seem to get noticed.
They’re not very comfortable – recommend arch inserts if you get them.
NCChopper - April 16, 2010
Thanks!
I like them……
HEYJUDE - April 16, 2010
And, they are leather – and the stitching is just like on a baseball.
NCChopper - April 16, 2010
i’d wear em’
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
You got balls on yo' feets!
But very nice ones, at that

!Vive la Francoeur! - April 16, 2010
Marlins ralling in the 9th
Scored 2 already, second and third now with one out.
Bronn - April 16, 2010
Man
that Philies ’pen is terrible. Definitely their Achilles heel
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Yeah...
Halladay isn’t pitching those CGs because he’s good. He’s doing it because he HAS TO.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010
Outside of Madson
I wouldn’t want a single person from their pen in ours. Over ANYONE.
Bronn - April 16, 2010
Yeah
now that Jo-jo is gone, anyway.
Those guys are all making big bucks too.
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
The Phillies bullpen is not very good.
And their bench sucks.
Bronn - April 16, 2010
Maybin is up...
automatic strikeout.
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
oooh
infield single.
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
Baker up
Hanley on deck. Herndon is surely coming out at this point.
Bronn - April 16, 2010
who the hell is David Herndon?
Jose Rodriguez - April 16, 2010
Another example of the Phillies crappy bullpen
Of course, they did have a 6 run lead in the 9th, so he’s probably just a mop-up guy.
Bronn - April 16, 2010
I am still pissed at Direct TV.
justincredubil02 - April 16, 2010
go egg their local office tonight.
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
I think I am going to call them and bitch at them and see what kind of freebies they give me.
justincredubil02 - April 16, 2010
I bet anyone in here

Terrible. Has there been even one good ump so far?
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
i was about to say
Umpire fail #7419 on the season
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
we need robot umpires
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
I'd like it if they also had bad attitudes.
“Suck my transmission!”

carpengui - April 16, 2010

Hanley up, down 2, runner on first, two outs. Hanley can tie it with a HR.

Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
Does Cantu have an RBI yet?

Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010

Cantu was completely overmatched, there.
Bronn - April 16, 2010
wah wah wah
Oh well. Fun while it lasted
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Phillies will have some problems over the next couple weeks, though.
Bronn - April 16, 2010

I’m glad we get them with no Rollins (Castro can’t hit… at all) or Blanton

end the ining.

To his credit
He retired the two lefties he’s seen, and allowed hits to the righties.
Further proving the LOOGY point.
Bronn - April 16, 2010
Nice effort there Chip…LOL
JadedMayberry - April 16, 2010
We’re awfully good at the corners.
Ron A. - April 16, 2010
Apparently

Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Not the best attempt by the old man at 3B
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
I know, right?

carpengui - April 16, 2010
sounds like a potential JVL
for Carp
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Holliday hitting for him now – 2 on for StL.
carpengui - April 16, 2010
Wow
Carp’s run was unearned. He has a +.224 WPA. That might be a record for a loss if he goes the distance
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010

Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
They keep adding stuff too
First splits, now more Def. stats. Great stuff
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
+/- right?
I was looking for it but couldn’t find it
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
It's under "advanced fielding"
the one that’s comparable to UZR is “DRS”
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
DRS? elaborate, please
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
Already did, above!
It’s just a combo of all the individual ways of saving runs defensively (double plays, throws, range, etc.)
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
No, I found DRS…I was just looking for +/- cause I remember Yunel was something crazy like +30 a year or two ago
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
DRS
is part of +/-
Sorry, I misunderstood the ?
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Hmm…interesting. Need to brush up on my metrics apparently.
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
It is confusing
their glossary is not up to date
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Thanks though.
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
Yunel:
+12 and +13 the last 2 years
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Interesting to see the difference in this UZR when compared to DRS
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
Yeah
like 80% of guys are fairly close, but some (like Yunel) are way off. I’d like to know why, but I don’t know the details of the methodologies
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
which stands for "defensive runs saved"
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
No
Has to be Pedro during his Expo years. He pitched a perfect game and it went into extra innings.
romone_braves91 - April 16, 2010

UGARedcoat13 - April 16, 2010

Bronn - April 16, 2010
Ahem
Three lefties.
Bronn - April 16, 2010
In fact
He faced, what 8 hitters? He got 4 lefties out and got 1 righty out, and the other 3 righties all reached base.

Thanks Eric!
NCChopper - April 16, 2010

their #1 pitching prospect, Meija, who everyone wants to be a starter, was put in the bullpen by Omar…and he’s gotten rocked.

Medlen is so nasty
Smoltz's Beard - April 16, 2010
why
don’t the broadcasters use computers to keep score? is it just tradition or something?

Have you seen Smoltz around a computer?

So how long until it is acceptable to begin rosterbating.
Cause I have a bit of a buildup I feel I need to get out there.
!Vive la Francoeur! - April 16, 2010
i find rosterbating right before bed to be extremely cathartic

BOTTOM EIGHTH. 9-5.
Last time for the home sticks.
carpengui - April 16, 2010
What inning is it?
NCChopper - April 16, 2010
8th…i think
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
Alright guys...take your pick
you get a P, IF and OF.
Would you rather have Hanson, Esco and Heyward
OR
Ubaldo Jimenez, Tulo and Carlos Gonzalez
?
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
Jimenez, Tulo and CarGo
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
What? Are you crazy?
Hanso/Esco/Heyward!!
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010
*Hanson
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010
Carlos Gonzalez is going to be a stud tho. Not on Heyward’s level, but a level or two below.
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
yeah, i agree
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Hanson, Esco, Heyward
NCChopper - April 16, 2010
anything with heyward
bpk228480 - April 16, 2010
maybe I'm biased
but I like our guys more on all counts. Esp. Heyward over Gonzalez (he’s good, but he’s no Heyward)
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Tulo over Esco?
I love me some Crazy Cuban, but Tulo is a monster.
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
Esco is just as good
when you take away park effects
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
This is false
Last year, Tulo had a 135 wRC+. Escobar was 120
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
Look at their splits
Esco > Tulo on the road. There’s really no doubt about it. See link below
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
This makes no sense at all to me
Home games count too. There a reverse Coors effect (It is difficult to hit a hard breaking curve when you’ve seen less sharp breaking pitches for a week). And the overall PARK ADJUSTED numbers stil have Tulo way ahead of Escobar.
To each their own, but I’ll take Tulo every time, and I suspect most people outside of Georgia would too
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
There's no way to know
How they’d hit in the same park. So you can disagree. But I prefer to look at the stats themselves rather than trust the adjustments. I don’t trust the adjustments at all.
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
That's fine
But when the adjustments say Tulo is above average by 35% and Escobar by 20%, I don’t think the discrepency can be made up in statistical noise
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
Oh it definitely can
especially when the raw numbers say that Esco is about .020 points of wOBA better on the road. That tells me that the park adjustments must be fishy. Maybe Tulo is a bit better, but not 15% better. That’s just wrong.
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
I’d take Esco’s D any day over Tulo.
justincredubil02 - April 16, 2010
Also a good point
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Tulo's defense is interesting
His 2007 was one of the best defensive seasons by a shortstop in major league history by any metric. He has a strong arm, but his range may have dwindled due to bulking up. I’m not sure I trust UZR last year, as other metrics say he was above average.
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
I'm not sure what you're getting at.
Tulo’s road wOBA was better than BOTH Yunel’s home and road wOBA. If Tulo hits like he did on the road for every game, he’d still have a better wOBA than Yunel in 2009
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
Yes, but Hanson > Jimenez and Heyward > Gonzalez. That makes the choice easy.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010
that's what I'm thinking
but it’s close. It really depends on how much Hanson and Gonzalez develop.
Scott Coleman - April 16, 2010
Hanson>Jimenez?
Maybe in a couple years, but that’s a tough call.
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
I think right now
And I like Ubaldo
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Ubaldo's FIP and xFIP were both better than Hanson in 2009
And 2010.
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
Well
it’s been 2 starts in 2010. I like Hanson better in 2010.
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
2009 shouldn't be ignored though
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
Hanson didn’t pitch a full season? And it was his first…?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010
I wasn't looking at counting stats
I know it’s his first, but it was a pretty incredible rookie season, ballyhooed all through the country. My point was more that even with that admittedly awesome breakout season, Ubaldo was better
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
Not really
And the point is that you’re trying to compare a rookie to a non-rookie. Fail.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010
If you want to discount Rockies hitters for Coors Field, you have to equally credit the pitchers
By park adjusted numbers, Ubaldo was better. FIP isn’t even park-adjusted, and Ubaldo was better there. Your point about rookie vs. non-rookie is well taken, so we can see how it works out. I could be wrong, but Hanson seems to be a very polished prospect, the type I don’t expect to have as much room from improvement from rookie to sophomore year.
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
I wasn't one of the people arguing against Tulowitski.
I gave that one immediately.
Tulo > Esco
Hanson > Jimenez
Heyward >> Gonzalez
Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!
End discussion.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 16, 2010
Haha
I know you weren’t arguing against Tulo. Just saying Coors masks a lot of what Ubaldo does. We’ll have to get you tomorrow. Too bad Hanson isn’t starting!
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
I'm not sure how you could possibly take Escobar over Tulo. That makes no sense at all.
I could see Hanson over Jimenez if you are optimistic with his ceiling.
And I would definitely take Heyward over CarGo
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
Tulo on the road:
.766 OPS
Yes, I’ll take Esco.
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
it's that low?
Geeze.

Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
http://www.fangraphs.com/statsplits.aspx?playerid=3531&position=SS&season=0
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Yunel's career OPS is only 30 points more?
Andrew T. Fisher - April 16, 2010
"only"
Also, Yunel’s is more OBP heavy
Jacob Peterson - April 16, 2010
Just saying
With a lost season due to injury included, his “terrible” road numbers are not far behind Yunel overall. And as for OBP, switch to wOBA. Tulo’s wOBA on the road was better than Yunel’s season wOBA last year. I know I’m nitpicking here by throwing out 2008, but it’s virtually unanimous that 2008 should be thrown out from injury when projecting Tulo
