Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!
According to Happy Gilmore, Chip would make a great golfer…huge ass. I was walking behind him one day at the Ted; I had no idea they made pants in that shape.
Zabe and Andy were like at some sports bar and Zabe totally interrupted whatever they were talking about to talk to said dude wearing the jersey. Awesome.
I understand Bobby had to do something. I’m just waiting for all the people who wanted Melky’s head on a pike after 20 bad PAs, to do the same for Diaz since he’s playing just as poorly. It ain’t gonna happen though, which is bullshit.
and he is one of the team leaders in walks and one of the league leaders in pitches per plate appearance. It isn’t like he is K-ing every AB or looking lost at the plate. It’s called a slump. Get over it.
realistically, probably 200 PAs…but 100 PAs at the very least. I know it’s tough b/c McLouth, Melky, and Diaz all suck right now but we just gotta try to be patient. It’s not like they’re all going to just stop hitting this year.
Not bullshit at all. Have you forgotten that Diaz has actually been an above average player in his career & Milky has not? Maybe that’s the difference instead of double standards.
Maybe…Schafer has good power, but he also takes walks and has good OBP. Sizemore-lite is the ceiling…but maybe he’ll turn into a Rasmus type if he develops properly.
I think he would do just fine in the leadoff role, but he might be best utilized elsewhere.
I see a lot of Sizemore in Slim Schafer. Now, he’s not equal to him, but has the same sort of skill set (lower contact rates, high pitch counts, good speed, good OBP, nice pop). And Sizemore was leadoff for a while.
And yeah, I know Rasmus isn’t a leadoff, but I was conjecturing a different development path where he develops more power.
Yeah, I dunno. I don’t think he’d be a prototypical leadoff hitter, but with the pitches he sees, the walks, and the speed I think he would be at least serviceable. Certainly better than anything we have right now. The only thing that would worry me would be contact rate.
Yeah, maybe he’s feeling the pressure to deliver in leadoff too much.
Heck I don’t know – it seems to be the single position we’re having trouble filling.
So in the excitement of Heyward and Hinske being badasses, we missed the real revelation of this inning: Melky hit a ball into the air. Like, it went higher than 6 feet off the ground!
I loved that movie, but I saw it really early when there were no expectations about a good movie. Perhaps the same holds here where you’re only seeing it due to the hype that it got.
I know that someone created a dumbass line-up optimization tool that used historical linear weights for positions, and it determined that it doesn’t matter who hits 8th because it thinks the 9th batter is a pitcher, no matter who is in that spot in the line-up.
When you’re talking about those bottom spots in the line-up, the impact that they have the line-up is very minimal. So put your worst hitters there, not a decent one.

Scott Coleman - April 15, 2010
So when do people start giving Diaz a hard time for his rough start? Or does he get a free pass for some unknown reason?
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
still hitting better than Melky?
UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010
ha, not by much
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
I don’t think he should be leading off

UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010

Lizziebeth - April 15, 2010
his rough start was overshadowed by gluas, nate and melky.
but diaz really hasn’t played as much as they have.
Braves Biceps - April 15, 2010
yeah, but people started giving melky shit after the same amount of PAs diaz has now
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
Melky started off negative
Since he is part of the package that sent Javy out of here
UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010
I understand that. People should be able to separate that from his actual play though. It’ll never happen, but I’m just saying.
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
agree
However, some people like me always thought he was the most over-rated player in the game when he was with the Yankees.
Then bam he is on your team

He wasn’t even the most over rated player on that team.
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010

dc_allday - April 15, 2010

You’ve got a lot to learn, kid.
Jacob Peterson - April 15, 2010
We should start keeping a count of how many times this question gets asked.
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
sounds good to me
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
Come on
Bobby had do something about Melky
Guess for MClouth back to leadoff?
UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010
All Bobby had to do about Melky was let him get out of his funk. Melky is simply not getting results. He is doing everything else nearly perfectly.
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
+1
Jacob Peterson - April 15, 2010
huh?
Well he did he moved him to 8th in the lineup yesterday…
I am just saying he had to move him out of the leadoff spot
UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010
And replace him with….Diaz? At least Melky is making pitchers work right now – Nate too, for that matter.
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
Melky hit 8th yesterday? did he not
Melky is not doing much better he is not even hitting the ball very hard, his LD% is plummeting and his K rate is going up
UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010
He did hit 8th.
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
I understand Bobby had to do something. I’m just waiting for all the people who wanted Melky’s head on a pike after 20 bad PAs, to do the same for Diaz since he’s playing just as poorly. It ain’t gonna happen though, which is bullshit.
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
Apparently you forget, Matt Diaz F’n rules!
…. Yeah, double standards suck
BraveSaluki - April 15, 2010
not knocking you just a real question
how many ABs do we give Melky at this point though?
I mean really with all three hitting horribly we really dont have an option though.
But how long do you wait? 50AB? 100AB? 200AB?
UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010
More than 20…
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
He is at 40 now?
UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010
How long should the Yankees wait on Teixiera?
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
I expect him to be optioned to AAA within the week.
If not given his outright release.
soup du jour - April 15, 2010
lol
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
They should give up on him.
They can trade him to us for JoJo Reyes – even swap.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 15, 2010
How long should the Sox have waited on Ruth?
Skyagusta - April 15, 2010
and he is one of the team leaders in walks and one of the league leaders in pitches per plate appearance. It isn’t like he is K-ing every AB or looking lost at the plate. It’s called a slump. Get over it.
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
Milky is in the same league as Tex how? It’s not even a comparable situation.
I hope we don’t wait on Milky for 4 yeats like the Skanks did.
FitzFan - April 15, 2010
I don’t know what a “yeat” is, but no where did I say that Melky was like Teixiera.
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
realistically, probably 200 PAs…but 100 PAs at the very least. I know it’s tough b/c McLouth, Melky, and Diaz all suck right now but we just gotta try to be patient. It’s not like they’re all going to just stop hitting this year.
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
Thats what they said about Frenchy
Skyagusta - April 15, 2010
Except Frenchy’s problem wasn’t BABIP – it was no walks, lots of Ks and poor plate discipline – pretty much the complete opposite of Melky.
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
I know
I’m just ramblin
Skyagusta - April 15, 2010
Not sure I follow…?
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
thanks
People took my question out of context..
I think 100PA would be about right, because then you have the minors to work it out
UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010
No worries. It’s just as painful for me to watch and wait, trust me.
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
Not bullshit at all. Have you forgotten that Diaz has actually been an above average player in his career & Milky has not? Maybe that’s the difference instead of double standards.
FitzFan - April 15, 2010
lol
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
cool story
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
Jesus...
DogDaysofSummer - April 15, 2010
Matt’s doing great in the leadoff role…..NOT
BrunscoBrave - April 15, 2010
We don't have a leadoff hitter, been saying it for two years...
hopefully Rose, if not Schafer. I just don’t see Schafer as a leadoff.
Mr. Sanchez - April 15, 2010
Maybe…Schafer has good power, but he also takes walks and has good OBP. Sizemore-lite is the ceiling…but maybe he’ll turn into a Rasmus type if he develops properly.
I think he would do just fine in the leadoff role, but he might be best utilized elsewhere.
soup du jour - April 15, 2010
Sizemore-lite? You mean McLouth? Yeah, not a leadoff. Neither is Rasmus.
Mr. Sanchez - April 15, 2010
No, I mean Sizemore.
I see a lot of Sizemore in Slim Schafer. Now, he’s not equal to him, but has the same sort of skill set (lower contact rates, high pitch counts, good speed, good OBP, nice pop). And Sizemore was leadoff for a while.
And yeah, I know Rasmus isn’t a leadoff, but I was conjecturing a different development path where he develops more power.
soup du jour - April 15, 2010
What I meant was, Sizemore lite...
or like Sizemore but not as good, is McLouth to me.
Mr. Sanchez - April 15, 2010
Oh, rainbows.
Yeah, I dunno. I don’t think he’d be a prototypical leadoff hitter, but with the pitches he sees, the walks, and the speed I think he would be at least serviceable. Certainly better than anything we have right now. The only thing that would worry me would be contact rate.
soup du jour - April 15, 2010
Same here...
and just don’t think he’ll be good enough. That’s McLouth’s problem too, hence the comparison.
Mr. Sanchez - April 15, 2010
Where’s the Matty D of old?
Jose Rodriguez - April 15, 2010
I've seen Diaz swing at some bad bitches, but that 2nd pitch...
that was in the dirt in the left hand batters box might take the cake.

fphjr01 - April 15, 2010
Yeah that is pretty dang ugly
Kinda like Aaron Harang himself
Jacob Peterson - April 15, 2010
I don't care if he looked like a zombie
He was a horse, and while he was still the 5 WAR guy, I’d have wanted him
royhobbs - April 15, 2010
dusty baker
Smoltz's Beard - April 15, 2010
haha this
Baker is to young pitchers
What Catholic Priests are to young boys
UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010
Truth.
And so facepalm worthy how true it is. I feel sorry for Chapman.

I remember
One Opening Day he pitched an extra inning 10.0 IP complete game

Russ Ortiz needs to write a book on giving a great interview, because his job skills can’t be the reason he still gets a job
a hooter's baby - April 15, 2010
I love
that the dodgers employ both R. Ortizes, Brad Ausmus, and FUGA. What a team!
Jacob Peterson - April 15, 2010
...Easier to bat 8th because pitchers don't throw you strikes?
Bronn - April 15, 2010
Easier to WALK 8th.
FineHamAbounds - April 15, 2010
Proctor had a good outing down in AAA. 1 inning of work, gave up 2 hits, and struck out 1.
Jose Rodriguez - April 15, 2010
eh
Not that good. Let me know when he starts giving up fewer hits
Jacob Peterson - April 15, 2010
EJECT HIM!!!
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
oh no
prado went 2 for 5 and his avg dropped!
atl192485 - April 15, 2010
Yeah....
Being awesome is hard work. He’s gonna have off nights.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 15, 2010
Prado’s only hitting .459!! BENCH HIM!!
TonyAlmeyda - April 15, 2010
Heyward has more hits (10) than McLouth, Melky, and Diaz combined (9)
BravesFanScout - April 15, 2010
Well, he has played every day and they haven’t. But point taken.
FineHamAbounds - April 15, 2010
Every day only 1 of him play, but 2 of them
Mr. Sanchez - April 15, 2010
exactly
BravesFanScout - April 15, 2010
And I believe that Melky and McLouth have fewer Ks combined…
justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
Actually Jason has 12 Ks to Melky and McLouth's 15 Ks. Melky, McLouth, Diaz have 22 Ks combined.
not much of a comparison. Jason has struck out more times that each player, but he is still caring the outfield offense all alone.
BravesFanScout - April 15, 2010
ROFL
So what you’re say is…..Heyward should man the outfield by himself, too? Seeing as he already is providing all the offensive production.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - April 15, 2010
Basically...
actually i’m just showing how terrible out other 3 guys have been
BravesFanScout - April 15, 2010
That comparison is not fair. Those other players are not on the same level as Heyward.
romone_braves91 - April 15, 2010
true true
BravesFanScout - April 15, 2010
By the next game - I gotta show y'all
a photo of my sneakers. Remind me.
NCChopper - April 15, 2010
Yes'm.
soup du jour - April 15, 2010
Will do!
HEYJUDE - April 15, 2010
Yes Chip, put a good batter 9th so that Pujols can hit 3 grand slams in a game.
Bronn - April 15, 2010
Hitting pitchers 8th
is, logically speaking, the best thing to do. You’d need the guy hitting 9th to be okay with it though
Jacob Peterson - April 15, 2010
This makes no sense to me
Why put a decent hitter down low where he gets fewer plate appearances. It’s the opposite of logic.
Bronn - April 15, 2010
It’s been shown to produce more runs. You get your better hitters at the top of the lineup coming up with more runners on base.
Ron A. - April 15, 2010
Well
The idea is that, since the 1-2-3 guys are your best hitters, you want to have a decent guy up before them.
Jacob Peterson - April 15, 2010
But for that to work...
Don’t you have to ignore that your 3 best hitters should be 1-2-4?
soup du jour - April 15, 2010
sorry,
should have said 1-2-3-4
Jacob Peterson - April 15, 2010
Why not just move them down and put that guy batting first, then?
If you have another decent hitter who needs to be on base when the good hitters are up, put him at the top of the line-up.
Show me how this makes mathematical sense.
Bronn - April 15, 2010
Because he’s not good enough to be batting 1st. The idea is not to have a good hitter batting 9th, it’s to have your worst hitter batting 8th.
Ron A. - April 15, 2010
Look it up
lots of really smart dudes have studied this, and they unanimously say bat the pitcher 8th.
Jacob Peterson - April 15, 2010
I know that someone created a dumbass line-up optimization tool that used historical linear weights for positions, and it determined that it doesn’t matter who hits 8th because it thinks the 9th batter is a pitcher, no matter who is in that spot in the line-up.
When you’re talking about those bottom spots in the line-up, the impact that they have the line-up is very minimal. So put your worst hitters there, not a decent one.
Bronn - April 15, 2010
Also
just because something doesn’t make sense to you at first, that doesn’t mean it’s not logical
Jacob Peterson - April 15, 2010
There was a post on beyond the boxscore about this
The maximum difference doing the non-intuitive lineup is like 5 runs a year — 0.5 a win. So its no big deal.
fphjr01 - April 15, 2010
true

UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010

dunnytwogloves - April 15, 2010
No Saito or Wagner
but Moylan is always available
UltimaParadox - April 15, 2010
It’s only two days of work. Normally closers have three days of throwing.

romone_braves91 - April 15, 2010

justincredubil02 - April 15, 2010
I remember when Soriano was pitching on his 3rd straight game last year. He blew the save…just saying…
dunnytwogloves - April 15, 2010
Why Wagner? Why not Chavez or Dunn?
TonyAlmeyda - April 15, 2010
