Bench warming

That’s a lot of bench players in today’s lineup. Could it be that the usual lineup is being used more against NL pitchers so that they can learn from it? And therefore get their day off against an AL team?

I think that there is some truth to that.

I know that Chipper has said he is playing Tuesday to get a look at Halladay. At the moment, Chipper is resting a bruised thumb.

I just jammed my thumb playing volleyball...

and it hurts like a son of a bitch. So I feel Larry Wayne’s pain….

That shit's the worst

I did the same thing last weekend chasing down my dog before he ate something, and that junk hurts like a sunuvabitch. I’ve still got the blood-under-the-nail to prove it.

I recall a pair of ST games several years in which the Astros had Clemens out there against the Braves on consecutive appearances. In both cases, the entire starting nine were out there to see his stuff.

oops – that was “several years ago

can’t wait for tommorow night’s game on CSS, hopefully i can find a good stream and watch it and relax, i cant wait to watch these things live

It's on MLB Network...

…live tomorrow night as well, I think.

looks like i’ll be spending some quality father-son time with my Directv owning dad.

Tues 7 pm

CSS and MLBN televised.

I may be the only one left

But I’m really hoping JoJo can finally put it all together this year. I know he doesn’t have a spot on the rotation, but I’m almost hoping he would be the 6th man in case someone needed a rest. If he blows it, then he’s fair game to be sent off. But he’s still young and hopefully he’s learned from his past mistakes, i.e. not listening to veteran help.

I agree with you…I enjoyed watching him pitch in Gwinnett last year and I still have a warm spot for all lefty’s and I think we definitely need a lefty in the rotation. However, I think JoJo has ruined his SP chance for us in the rotation going forward and I think his role with the Braves will only be as long relief in the bullpen which is probably what’s suited for him. If we trade him another team would give him a starting chance I’m sure.

And it’s the work week and I’m back to listening to games in the office. :-)

I’ll try to provide whatever play by play I can. I did notice over the weekend that Wes Timmons got into one of the games late and even got an AB. He was a favorite player of my wife and I last year at Gwinnett and it’s good to see him at Spring Training with the Braves again this year. I’d like for him to get a callup mid season if there are injuries like Reid Gorecki got last year, just to give him a taste of the majors. He’s a great player and a heck of a hustler on the field and can play multiple positions…he’s fun to watch.

I brought my iphone charger today, just in case. Gonna try out this EDGE nonsense first though.

Hey Beard

Breaking Bad season 2 has been on free on demand by me, idk what cable provider you have, but its worth looking into

Funny you mention that because I checked just for shits and giggles and found it on demand as well. Had a little 6 hour marathon on Saturday afternoon, haha. Got in another 2 episodes yesterday.

Great, great show. 2nd season is so much better than the first, I’ve been on the edge of my seat several times. Can’t wait for the 21st.

For some reason on my PC when I launch MLB.com’s Flash player to listen to the game I can’t browse to anywhere else on either one of my browsers. That’s kind of weird…

It’s sad that the YES network broadcasts all of the Yankee games, but here in Atlanta we don’t have a station that can broadcast all of the Braves games. Peachtree TV should broadcast the damn Spring Training games…better than what they broadcast during the day I’m sure.

Right. The Braves oughta give away the ST broadcast rights for free — just to promote their own product for the season to come. You build a fan base by expanding the options for delivery.

I don’t think they should give them away, but there are 3 different stations here in Atlanta that broadcast games for the Braves…I’m sure one of them could air a few ST games as well.

It's not feasible business-wise.

Even if the rights were cheap or free (which they likely are), the production costs of airing a game are higher than the crap Peachtree runs during the day, and the ratings are so low either way that the ad money wouldn’t change. YES probably loses on their broadcasts as well, but it helps build the Yankees and being a fully owned subsidiary of the Yankees, it makes sense.

Surely though

Sportssouth or Fox Sports could improve their ratings over the garbage day time programming they carry by airing more spring training games.

which is where TBS comes into play...

oh, wait, we lost that automatic ability to have a major media platform under the same corporate roof.

I’m not at all opposed to this idea.

melky question

when he is in the game…..where does he fit in our lineup? top of the order or bottom? Where did he play in NY?

In the Yankees lineup...

…he often batted ninth, but that was because there was no pitcher and they were loaded, so he was one of those sort of second leadoff hitter ninth hitters often. I am not sure where he fit in the lineup when a backup catcher was in or a backup infielder.

7-9

They hit him 7th, 8th, or 9th. I would think that’s where he would hit in our lineup, as well. Either behind Yunel or Heyward in the 8th spot. I’m sure that’s where Matty D will hit, too when he’s in LF

It’s interesting that the Yankees played him in all 3 OF spots regularly last year. He was mainly used in CF, but got a lot of time in RF and LF.
What’s also really interesting is how much better he was in RF and CF than Left.

I think that was small sample size...

…Melky’s being better in RF and CF than LF. Everything I have heard scouting wise is that he is an average CF and a bit above average in right or left, which makes sense.

Van Pope a pitcher? This could be interesting.

Say what???

I just read on Van’s facebook page that someone commented about them converting him to a pitcher. It is not a bad idea as he does have a great arm from what I remember seeing him throw the ball over to first from last year.

true, but a great arm doesn't necessarily translate into a great pitcher

Without a doubt it doesn’t…but he hasn’t been hitting so I guess it’s worth a try.

And the Game Begins, Infante up and takes a high tight FB to start the game.

Infante grounds to 3rd and the 3rd baseman throws a wild pitch to first…but Infante tried to go to 2nd, then changed his mind and got tagged out.

Wow WTF

Why is my MLB At Bat audio feed so shitty? It cuts out every few seconds.

I don’t know I use, the MLB.com flash thing on the web, and it works great.

I have the iPhone app and it’s horrible on 3G

The game against the Pirates the audio was crystal clear, but every other game has had it’s share of hiccups. Hope it improves during the regular season.

Wow, alright it’s really bad today…

Melky Cabrera at bat

he walks on 4 pitches

Jason Heyward at bat

Takes a high fastball for strike one that he didn’t agree with.

Fastball at the knees, 0-2 now.

Ball…1-2 count.

Another ball….2-2 count. Jason working the count again.

hot DAMN I love to see that!

3-2 now…love the patience.

Heyward crushes his first homer of the year over the RF fence, they say close to 400 ft.

It never gets old hearing commentators gush about Jay Hey…

link to the game??
I couldn't find one!

My solution is to head to Wal-Mart tonight and buy the cheapest AM radio I can find.

heyward

LONG homer!!

sweet jesus

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How many cars go down? Did they say?

I think it destroyed a bus

Nice! Bonus points!

Only if it was traveling slower than 50 mph...

pop quiz hot shot.

Was Sandra Bullock on the bus?
Couldn't have been

She’s still celebrating her Razzie/Oscar double this weekend.

My impression of her went up a few points when she said she was going to put both of them on her mantle, right next to each other.

She handled it with remarkably good humor. You hear how she gave out copies of the movie she won the Razzie for when she went in to accept it?

Ha, no that’s cool.

Wheeled a big wagon full of em out on stage and handed em out. Classy.

And I noticed they were very careful...

to not show her husband, Jesse James. (Yes, being married makes you watch that crap sometimes, but it’s better than Gilmore Girls).

I saw this movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode! I think it was called “The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down.”

it doesn't come across as well without his vocal inflections,....

That was the film "Speed" in French, which in France was called "La Vitesse!" Or at least it should have been, but in fact it was called "Speed."

+1000, Beard for the win.

Ha, glad someone got it!

Definitely...

…I love Homer Simpson quotes.

Someone tried to tell me Peter Griffin was funnier. No chance.

Boo...

90s Simpsons is killer (most recent work is crap though).

+1

I originally thought seasons 4, 5, and 6 were the premiere Simpsons years, but Best Buy was having a sale so I bought seasons 7 and 8 and they were both right up there.

Season 9 appears to be where it kind of loses it’s footing.

All boils down to when Conan quit writing for them and when Phil Hartman died.

announcers say approx 400 feet

2-0 Braves...Heyward homers to right.

You could hear the sound off his bat and it did sound like a damn gun going off….amazing sound.

Exactly

Also I just smiled when I heard it…I knew it was a rope somewhere.

It sounded amazing
Whenever Jason Heyward makes contact

An angel has an orgasm.

I'm jealous...no audio :-(
Heyward is seriously going to be at the top...

…of the pitches seen per plate appearnaces chart this year.

HELL YES!

wish there was video big time now

And im now sitting all by myself grinning ear to ear….

1st homer

of many to come

Glaus ropes one to LF for a single
Glaus

continues to impress.

What sucks is...

…since this is a TV game, we won’t even get video. Of course, with a Heyward homer, ESPN might find something for sportscenter, lol.

Check MLBN tonight. Their highlight show gets video.

Max Scherzer is pitching by the way.
Wow, surprised we're lighting him up

He usually has our number

We didn't have Heyward last time he saw us

We’re cheating ;)

I’ll be a lot of video has been watched since then.

Heyward with a bomb!

M V P!

Seriously

We need to start this chant at the beginning of the year. Totally baffle national tv announcers any time they see us.

Something tells me they’d pick up on it rather quickly. Hell, the Mets announcers may join in, it’s not like they’re gonna have anything else to talk about…

Hinske with a single, Glaus to 2nd.
Matt Diaz up, 2 on 1 out

Matty D walks, bases loaded

David Ross up to bat - bases loaded 1 out

Ball 1….Scherzer is not on today.

Ball 3….walk ’em in!

Srike 1…the crowd approves.

If Heyward can keep it up...

and the rest perform in line with their career averages, this team is gonna have a great lineup

Imagine if Glaus stays healthy…good lord, that’ll be nice

Chipper too,...

and Esco, and McCann, and Melky, and…

well, let’s just say we hope everyone stays healthy, because there are a few key parts to this lineup.

sweet sassy molassy...

Heyward is a beast

Just came back from the bathroom to hear “…and the nightmare continues for Scherzer.” Gotta love that.

Braves 3 - Tigers 0 - Ross walks and scores Glaus
Patience..The Million Dollar Keyword for a sucsessful, 2010
Good health in my eyes...

Heyward, McCann, Glaus, Chipper, etc throughout their careers have shown good plate discipline and a propensity to take a walk. If the lineup stays relatively healthy, with the depth at Cox’s disposal, there is a lot of talent to work with, even if players just tend to produce in line with their career averages.

Thats two words.

Love our patience at the plate thus far!
Brooks Conrad up now
Braves 5 - Tigers 0

Conrad pulls a double down the RF line for a double and scores 2

He’s killing it this spring.

Conrad

having an awesome ST

I'm loving this guy

I’ll be the first one pissed if Thurston makes the team over him.

He is making a case for the last bench spot.

Whoa…what?! Wow.

Scherzer is out after 1/3 of an inning!!!

That’s the power of PineSol the Bravos

Nice!

Btw, thanks for the play by play Dave!

Hear Hear!

Dave, I think I speak for all of us when I say

Scherzer saw a Heyward HR

And instantly gave up the will to pitch

He may never recover

They’ll say it was pitch count. lol

This Kid is literally going to take this franchise to the next level. He’s gonna generate all kinds of revenue via ticket sales and especially if they can market him the right way. What an at bat. Taking an 0-2 count and pushing it to full, then driving it 400 feet. And the legend grows….

I know there is no real scientific evidence for this...

..but doesn’t it seem that with all the attention of our team (and all of baseball) on Heyward and his approach, all of the Braves hitters seem more patient this spring? (Well, other than Chipper, and he’s just getting his hacks in, we know he’ll get his walks.) If that is true (which it probably isn’t) that is amazing for a kid to have that kind of effect on a team.

Ryan Howard

Heyward is our answer, our Puljos

Just got out of my 9 AM class

Heyward do anything interesting yet? :-)

Monster HR

Scroll up

Nah… you missed nothing.

brooks conrad with another double…geez that man wants a spot

tuggin on the heart strings this commercial break

oh and selling tickets

was that Dane Cook?

If I had to kiss a boy

I’m pretty sure it would be Jason Heyward

Would you

slip him the tongue?

Maybe after he wins MVP for the 8th time

hahahahaha

good one

heyward firsts:

Heyward will be the first to:
1. Hit a grand slam with noone on.
2. Hit 2 hrs in one at-bat

add to it…

If the ball hits Heyward and goes out of the park, does he homer himself in from first base?

Divide zero by itself.

play

all nine positions simutaneously

So Glaus has a line of .625/.727/.750

I think I’d take that from him this year. lol

I think that would be like...

some kind of record.

Jason Heyward: That ain’t nothing.

that's pretty good
man

im mad i missed the HR

It sounded awesome coming off the bat

thats why im mad

Sorry, had to reboot after installing Saleslogix for work

Thanks

for doing this

No worries…just have to watch out for my boss :-)

Tigers have runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 out now (Cabrera singles off Conrads glove to right)

Braves 5 - Tigers 1

Uh oh…hit into RF, a run scores and Cabrera goes to 3rd. 1st and 3rd again.

He's doing it on purpose.

Remember how Huddy was disappointed with his first outing because he never got the chance to work out of a jam?

Hudson strikes one out to end the inning.

I love how your play-by-play is coming up at the exact same time the audio streams it, ha

It’s that 90 MB (Dual DS3) Internet connection we have here at work. I can’t wait til we get the OC-3.

well, that sounds ridiculous.

It is…but we need the bandwidth as we host many web sites here at our data center. We use probably about 60-80 MB worth of our bandwidth during business hours.

And here I am using an old clunker where we’re not even allowed to stream anything. Hence, the iphone app.

Braves offense

Shut out the other day, but the Braves offense looks really good this year. If Chipper and McKouth will get started, it’s going to be fun to watch.

Just read the MLBTR Offseason Review

Everyone is upset about the Vazquez trade but personally i think that the additions we made with the money we saved from trading him will help this team a lot more. especially when you factor in the prospects in the deal.

completely agree

1 year of Vazquez….we can resign him next year if need be

I still don’t know if resigning Hudson knowing that Vazquez would potentially have to be dealt was the right move, but what are you gonna do, right?

well i mean

Hudson has shown more consistency in his career and he wanted to be here for a much cheaper price. of course we dont know if we could have extended Javy for the same price but at the time i guess they were going off consistency and Hudson having a new elbow

Lots of questions marks, which is why I’m not getting too worked up over it. What’s done is done.

Yeah, Huddy saw the way things might play out, so he jumped in and acted first — effectively forcing the Braves to keep in. Great play on his part.

3 year

of Hudson over 1 year of Javy

well

we’ll see. If Hudson comes back and pitches terribly then that wouldnt be worth it

career wise

I like the bet

Then again, if Vazquez had been retained and pitched horribly, it wouldn’t be worth it either.

true

at least we have Heyward. I think he could really be the difference maker for this team

Ha, “at least we have Heyward” could come in handy if things don’t go as we hope this year.

then i will say

at least we have Vizcaino lol

Argh

I couldn’t get me Bluetooth to play nice with the Mac today, so I went back to listening to the PSP. Then it hit me that the Mac does have a headphone port that I can plug my PSP headphones into…

Okay, this comparison is inevitable

Something to keep up with as Spring training progresses.

Matt Wieters 2009: .333/.395/.513, 4 2B, 1 HR (43 PAs)
Jason Heyward 2010: .455/.636/..909, 2 2B, 1 Hr (11 PAs)

you forgot the most important aspect of his game

THE WALKS!!!

I put the OBP

That’s the important number.

Actually, before the last flyout...

…Heyward had 11 ABs, 16 plate appearances.

Yeah, you need to account for how many walks and strikeouts too.

I meant 16

a mis-type

Jason Heyward is back up again

He golfs one to RF for a flyout.

Glaus up now
He must be showing a lot of patience.
Gotta troubleshoot a problem...

be back

Hey guys. I love what I am reading so far. I am really excited about our offensive potential this year. I haven’t felt this way about a Braves linup in quite some time.

if only

we could trade McLouth for Carl Crawford

That would be nice, but I think Schafer is going to be better long term.

its only meant to be a short term deal. although i dont know who would play CF if that happened lol

I’d rather have Crawford long term…so we could just sign him after this year.

We’ll have Frank get right on that. I’m sure the Yankees will simply ignore him ;]

Well, we can dream right? I’d love for him to play LF and bat leadoff for us though.

not worth it money wise.

I would rather do a deal at the deadline where we deal McLouth for Crawford after Schafer is hopefully tearing up AAA

Then we can bring Schafer up to play CF but then Diaz and Cabrera are out of a job . . . well Diaz at least

diaz walks

bases loaded

Ok, Bases loaded again for Ross

Heh…Javy Lopes was out in the field today wearing David Ross’ #8

Did Glaus walk?

I think so…I had my headphones off so I missed it. He was up with the bases empty though so I think he, Hinskey and Diaz got on to load them up.

Ross tattoos one (announcers words) down the LF line, but it was foul

tatoos

out to be a foul

And I tattoed it...

over the Michelin Tire sign to win the game.

Glaus

I just love his patience…

It’s like we have our own Adam Dunn who can actually play good D.

haha

And people think I can’t admit it when I am wrong…

:)

Patience seems to be a theme so far among many. I like it.

pitchers are gonna hate our lineup

well after they get past McLouth

9.3% career BB rate...very solid

ross hits one deep to RF and the RFer misses it.

3 run double for Ross
Ros

3 run Double

he could be the starting catcher on most teams.
indeed

prob one of the best signings by FW last year

I'm looking forward to seeing him get in more games this year.
Braves 8 - Tigers 1

Mercy rule? LOL!

By the way, it’s only the top of the 2nd, with two outs and Ross on 2nd now. Conrad up.

only the 2nd? wow…

Just joined in

how come the Braves refuse to disappoint me this spring?!?!

Let’s hope it not becuase they are waiting until August…

wow, Conrad just roped one foul and it had a nice crack sound on the bat.

Braves 8 - Tigers 1 (Middle of 2nd)

But he strikes out on the changeup.

So, how do the Ps sound like they're doing?...

obviously the bats are having a good day.

Hudson is still pitching…did ok in the 1st but gave up a few hits and a run. Let’s see how he does in the 2nd.

Hudson gave up 1 run and 2 hits in the first (they just said)

“Still”? He’s only now coming out for the second time! Probably gotten cold by now.

Javy V....

gave up a homer to Jimmy Rollins on the first pitch of their game..

eh... vindication?
Interesting....

He is a pitcher who gives up HRs. That doesn’t bode well for him, considering his new home…

And we deal them Lowe after he balls out this year and...

they’re desperate for pitching once Sabathia and Burnett go down with major arm injuries, Petite finally decides to retire, while Joba and Hughes continue to look like relief pitchers instead of starters. Then, sign Javy to a cheap 2 yr, $15m deal, and laugh, laugh, laugh.

he does have a tendency to give up the long ball...

I feel bad for Javy having to play at Yankee stadium

Alright, lunch time. While I’m gone I have a question for your fantasy baseball players.

How early are you planning on reaching for Heyward in the draft? If you’re involved in a TC league and don’t want to tip your draft strategy don’t worry about answering, but my big money league is a round-protected keeper league and I imagine he’ll be drawing alot of attention. Not sure how early I should target him.

I have been pondering that question for a few days now…lol.

I bet mvhsball takes him in the 3rd or 4th round though.

I took him in the fifth round yesterday, but it was an NL-only league full of Braves fans, so that’s probably not worth much…

I'm in a league on ESPN

And I got him in one of the last few rounds.

I took Hanson in the 21st last year (also a round protected keeper). Maybe I can get Heyward in the 16th?

I got hanson in the last round of one of my leagues too.

ADP

On Mockdraftcentral is 237.

In a standard mixed league

I just took him with the first pick of the 16th round. That’s probably a bit high, but his ADP on Yahoo! is 212, and I wasn’t going to have the chance at the end of the 17th.

I’d definitely look at him by the end of the 16th/early 17th round.

That league will treat me well

I got Pujols and Heyward. Game over!

(Also got Hanson)

Thanks…16th round is doable, I assumed he would be actually going higher than that.

I’ll add that I’m a keeper league as well, and we haven’t drafted yet but I wouldn’t reach beyond our fourth drafting round (which is round 15 after keepers are allotted). In a mixed league there’s still depth to be found in the first few rounds, but he’s not a true sleeper so I wouldn’t wait till the late rounds if you’re truly intent on owning him- in a keeper league he has good value even if he doesn’t start from day one, so I’d say first 3-4 rounds in my scenario.

For a keeper league

I wouldn’t wait-I’d go ahead and grab him as soon as you can.

In a keeper league,...

that definitely enhances his value, and I’d target him as early as I could afford it depending on the team’s other needs/holes to be filled.

And while I’m in a TC league, I’ll tip my hand. He ain’t lasting past round 3 gentleman.

and with teh 1st overall pick, Albert Pujols goes to the…wait a minute…no Pujols? HEYWARD??/ REALLY?

In Yahoo mock drafts

I’ve been successfully grabbing him in the 17th or 18th rounds. The earliest I’ve seen someone stretch for him is in the 14th round, but that was the same guy who took Chase Utley instead of Albert Pujols with the first pick of the draft. I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that isn’t exactly relevant data.

Well

You could make a case for taking Utley first, but the 14th is too early for Heyward. I wouldn’t take him there even if I knew it was my only chance to grab him.

I'm not talking about his first round pick...

I’m talking about the VERY FIRST PICK of the draft. #1. Yeah, okay, position scarcity, I understand that there is some logic to support the pick… but if Albert is available, I’m taking him. Period.

Just saying

The Utley pick isn’t insane. You’re not getting close to his production out of any other 2B, but you could come back down and take Adrian Gonzalez at the end of the second round and still get 40HRs. Or Kendry Morales even later than that and he’ll probably give you 30+ HRs with lots of RBIs.

I’m taking Pujols, but I can understand it.

It's funny, but

that was exactly the same scenario I was running through in my head. Utley/Gonzalez vs. Pujols and (Pedroia or Kinsler or Zobrist). I dunno. I still like the team with Pujols better, personally, but now that I’ve fiddled around with it, that’s not too bad.

The guy who inspired this post grabbed up Joe Nelson with his second round pick, and Josh Beckett with his 3rd round. I hope he was just play-testing his player rankings.

Lol

Joe Nelson? Maybe he was just schizo.

Freeman

in the game

I hope this doesn't mean that something is wrong with Glaus.

It is only the second inning; of course, Glaus is already 2-2.

He went 3-3 yesterday… dang.

well

i think its because of the amount of AB’s they are getting. Later in ST he’ll be in the whole game

Please don’t scare me with phrases like “something is wrong with Glaus.” :)

This x a 1000
apparently

Umpire keeps shrinking the zone

They are shrinking it...

…because the home plate ump was scared after Heyward glared at him after the first pitch he called a strike in the first at bat. Heyward is a big man.

Then he took three balls

And knocked a tape-measure shot HR with a full count.

Thurston turns a nice DP, 5-4-3, Hudson gets out of the 2nd.

Good rebound for Huddy.
Joe Thurston leading off the top of the 3rd

Dontrelle Willis is in to pitch.

ROFLMAO

i still feel bad for the kid. He listened to the wrong people and totally got his mechanics screwed up. He used to look so happy on the mound.

lol, that’s just wrong

this will be interesting.

Is this a charity game or something?

OMG, guys watch out, he can be wild.

Thurston bounces one up high and it was called a fair ball and they tag him out as he didn’t run.

Bobby will not like that he didn't run.
Better rent a place in Lawrencville

Guaranteed

That won’t do much to get him in Bobby’s good graces.

Omar Infante up now

Infante Ground out, 5-3

Melky Cabrera up now

Cabrera flies out, F9

Dontrelle looking good apparently.

Helps when guys are swinging
Dontrelle was inspired...

…he knew if he allowed a baserunner, he would have to face Heyward.

It’ll be interesting to see if he comes back out to pitch the 4th.

BTW, Scherzer has an ERA this spring so far of 30.86….OUCH!!!!

Geez, he makes Chavez look good. :)
Bottom of the 3rd, Hudson still pitching.
Is this one on the radio anywhere?

Announcer: “A grounder to the right…the Bermuda Triangle is forming…Hudson covers, but the throw is not in time”

They just mentioned how Freeman is built similar to Troy Glaus. I’m sure once Freeman bulks up more he will be about the size of Troy.

I really hope that they start Freeman at AAA this year….can’t wait to see him again (saw him in Rome a couple of years ago during his great season there).

AA

So I can see him in May in Chatt, then up to AAA

Yea, for Chattonooga. :)

I would love to get to see him up close and personal.

Big River Beer Garden

No sun in your eyes!

I bet he goes to AA, with a mid season promotion to AAA if all goes well.

I’m sure you’re right since he didn’t get much time at AA.

Braves need to start their own pickup Basketball team

Glaus – 6’5
Freeman – 6’5
Heyward – 6’6
Chipper – 6’4
McCann – 6’3
Lowe – 6’6
Hanson – 6’6

i feel bad

for nate and medlen lol

Not to mention

Matt Young

I’m guessing McCann won’t be the point guard.

There was this skills challenge between big and little Mac on BBTN last night

McCann can’t shoot worth a crap either-Nate pwned him.

Brian, though

Has some mad QB skills.

Kyle Cofield is 6’5 also

Conrad

makes an amazing play

Conrad

wants to make the team

Conrad +1; Thurston -1.

Conrad with a great diving stop up the middle and throws out the batter at first…(seen him do this a lot at Gwinnett…think of this:

beautiful shot!

DOB says Tom Verducci of SI is covering the Braves today

for a story on Jason Heyward. That homer looks even better now.

Oh, please don’t put him on the cover.

with some reference....

… to his natural ability?

as long as they don’t call it “The Natural”, I am fine with it.

Speaking of that, I just threw away that magazine a few weeks ago…

I haven’t done it yet. Want to, but haven’t been able to. I am hoping some Mutts fan will want it one day.

Hudson strikes out the last batter to end the inning then goes over to Conrad and thanks him for his great play on the way back into the dugout.

would be funny

if Prado struggles and Conrad takes over at 2B by going on a tear

The 2B rotation just doesnt stop lol

It could happen, but Conrad isn’t as consistent as Prado, and he’s never been. Prado has always hit at every level, where Brooks hasn’t ever hit that great, but he does enough to get by. He’s a very scrappy player, and very good.

Prado has actually outplayed his minor-league numbers by quite a bit so far – hence some of our hesitancy about him.

Well that’s true…but every coach talks about how he’s always hit at every level he’s been at. So I’m not as worries, especially when I hear Chipper talking about how he spends a lot of time in the video room striving to get better.

In slugging sure...

although that may just be due to physical maturation improving strength, as it has gone from an average of .393 to .451 in the bigs. But his avg and obp have remained pretty close—minors over 6 seasons .300/.353, while so far in the bigs—.307/.361. Doesn’t seem like he’s “outplayed his minor-league numbers by quite a bit” other than slugging, which again may be a product of physically maturing and getting old man strong.

Top of the 4th now, Willis pitching against Heyward

3-1 now to Heyward and announcer says he doesn’t want any part of Heyward

Heyward walks on 5 pitches.

This should be good between Heyward and Willis
Ball 4 bitches

O B P!
O B P!
O B P!

Freeman rips a screamer foul down the first base line

this is great

Heyward and Freeman in the lineup back to back

this is the future of the Braves.

i hope

Freeman wont be K’ing like he just did

Heyward in the batters box (last year in AAA)

Heyward is so big...

That the one deck circle looks like a pizza next to him!

I love the Gwinnett alternate jersey with its Beer League quality. Who made them, Joe’s Trophies down at the strip mall?

I don’t know…but I don’t care for them. My wife bought one for me last year because it was 75% off…it’s fun to wear to the games though. The only downside is that it’s really long so I have to tuck it in. It’s definitely not the same quality as the Atlanta Braves BP jersey which is my favorite shirt to wear to the games (it’s nice and cool).

Freddie Freeman at the plate

Freeman strikes out swinging against Willis.

Jason Heyward sucks.
nah

just the ppl behind him.

I know i wouldn't wanna take BP after him..
might i remind you guys...

conrad went 0 for 22 to end the season last year. ops at .666.
hitting spring training fastballs has never been his weakness. however, i do like conrad and hope he can become a dan uggla type of late bloomer. they have similar minor league numbers, however uggla is/was with a team that could allow him to bloom into a player because they really had no playoff expectations and no superior player blocking him. conrad has always been blocked. it’d be interesting to see what kind of numbers conrad could put up on a regular basis…but not with the braves.

I think is actually valuable as a super utility player as he has good pop and seems to do best PHing and filling in.

im guessing you missed the reply button
i'm guessing i didnt...

but thanks for your concern.

Matt Diaz grounds out, 6-3 - end of the 4th
Freeman hasn't been bad

But he also hasn’t taken a walk yet this spring.

Ok, back to work, be back later
Thanks for the play -by-play.
I guess i'll take over the play by play...

JoJo Reyes in to pitch.

Much obliged.
First pitch grounded out to 2B

One out.

JoJo gets Bosh swinging

First K of the game. 2 outs

JoJo gets another K

Nice inning! 11 pitches, 2 strikeouts and a weak groundout.

So that Heyward Kid

Pretty much guaranteed to be our starting RFer when the season starts eh?

unless

he just falls off. however its crazy that they say that the pitchers are ahead of the hitters so what happens when heyward catches up???

I think we just saw what happens...

when Heyward catches up to something in the first inning!

Well, if the Braves management wasn't lying...

…when they said they would give him a chance to earn the job, he is in pretty good shape. They could still keep him down for financial reasons, however, and if he cools off by the end of spring, they might have an excuse.

After reading a couple articles on the issue, I imagine we’ll treat him like the Rays did Longoria, and he’ll be in Gwinnet for the first couple weeks of the season.

Doubt it...

especially if we can hammer out a Longoria like deal soon.

So

Javy made his ST debut today.

2IP 1 H 1 R 1 ER 4 SO 1 HR against Phillies lineup of

Rollins
Polanco
Utley
Howard
Ibanez
Werth
Francisco
Mayberry
Ruiz

Not to bad

not too good either haha
Rossy with a hard hit single off Zumaya
Ross is unreal,

I really like this guy.

and for having such a good bat

he is a stud defensively too.

I personally think he should be Tommy Hanson’s personal catcher. Tommy is slow to the plate and Rossy will be able to stop the runners from constantly running on him. BMac gets his rest and our lineup doesnt take too much of a hit.

Someone likely gives him a chance to win a regular job next year...

I hope we can keep him, but he deserves more playing time.

Conrad hits into a 4-6-3 DP

Come on Brooksy.

Zero percent chance heyward starts in ATL

He’s 100 percent getting the longoria treatment. What do you want 60Abs of 20 year old Heyward or 600 ABs of 26 year old Heyward?

There is far more than a zero percent chance.

For one thing, we assume that we’ll sign him long term before then and aren’t too concerned. (We’ll give him the Longoria treatment in that way.) Second, the incentive currently isn’t there to give him the Longoria treatment—-Bobby likes him and is in his final season; Liberty owns the Braves as a tax write-off and will sell them far before six years from now, so they don’t care either.

Yeah, I’m thinking only 20% chance of the minors; 80% that he starts opening day against the Cubbies (I think that’s right).

yea but everything you're saying is speculative

Liberty Bank doesn’t care because they might not own them and we might give him a long contract. As sad as it is this is purely a business and with that you work on guarantees. Do I think the braves will give him the Mccann Or Longoria contract? Absolutely. But do I think the Braves will take a risk in not sending him to AAA for a couple of weeks to control him for another year? God no. You send him there for 2-3 weeks (not the Hanson super 2) and then call him up.

but you're right

The only way I can see that not happening is if Bobby makes a stand.

And I think Bobby will.

Hell, Bobby had to be convinced to give Heyward a rest day yesterday. And I don’t think Heyward’s performance today will cool Bobby off, to say the least.

Saying there’s a zero percent chance he starts Opening Day is speculative too, unless you’re Frank Wren.

Thurston rips a single up the middle
And the game suddenly gets far less interesting...

….with Cleven coming in to play right last inning. I know it is early and all the starters leave early, but I want my excitement!

seems like everyone takes off once Heyward goes out lol
Infante gives it a ride to Center Field

but it’s caught a few steps in front of the warning track.

8-1 Braves in the bottom of the 5th

Defensive changes

Sammons in to catch for Rossy
Hicks in at SS
Holt (?) at 2B

That’s JC Holt…played at AAA last year.

He’s short, about 5’9, left handed hitter. Quick runner who hits line drives.

Here he is:

that bottom pic is hilarious...

WATCH OUT FOR MY NUTS!

Is that the only face he ever makes…?

I think so….pretty funny.

Ditto

Lol on the same facial expression. Wait…is he a victim of the Mom saying, “your face is gonna freeze like that”??

Leadoff hitter for Tigers grounds out 6-3
JoJo with another K
Tigers making JoJo look good today. :)

I spoke to soon.
It's the rack for you...
Groundout 4-3

JoJo:

2IP 3K 1H 0BB 0ER

How about a JoJo shot since I'm posting

would love to see him make it...

as a spot starter/long reliever/2nd loogy. I doubt he ever becomes more than Bruce Chen, but I’m hoping he proves me wrong.

Your pics are so clear, and the colors just perfect.

I can tell you are a professional at this!

Actually no…just an amateur with borderline professional equipment. It is a great hobby of mine though…and it will give me the chance to shoot for the Gwinnett Braves this year.

I’m a network engineer by day though…I’d rather be out shooting though than sitting in my cubicle staring at my LCD’s.

Please!

No one’s ever gonna want to see my pics again. :) But I don’t care – yours are really great, and I enjoy the hell outta them!

I think

I have some of yours on my favorites. Last years hazing photos were yours weren’t they?

yep, the year before as well, although they were pretty fuzzy because I had to use film. Glad you liked them!

Thanks, but keep posting yours for sure, I love to see all pictures.

yeah, I do too. It’s a crazy obsession.

Hey the gig for Gwinnett may just lead to an opportunity to do what you love full time.....
Melky Cabrera at the plate
So why does Clevlen get a low # (he's #18) and Heyward gets #71???
Melky flies out to deep LF
Clevelan out 6-3

Damn, Freeman has made some boneheaded plays this spring…hits a homer but passes the runner in front of him, and now gets hit by a ground ball. Come on Freddie!

you would swear he’s only 20 years old or something

Hinske singles

but the ball hits Freeman. 3 outs

8-1 Braves going into bottom of 6th

Braves announcers:

Heyward ball easily over 400 feet

Tiger hitter with a Lineout to CF

Hyde

Not a great outing. huh?

Hyde with a walk and wild pitch,

could it be nerves?

another wild pitch
Sac fly to LF

8-3 Bravos

Ugh....

Thanks Hyde :(

From a Mark Bowman Tweet:

Hudson on Heyward coming from 0-2 to homer on 3-2 pitch: “He goes and puts one in the trees out there. I mean, it just adds to the legend.”

Oops...

I meant Dave O’Brien. Sorry Dave!

Checking Google Earth for Merchant stadium, there’s a couple layers of trees. I’m gonna assume that they aren’t talking about the ones right next to the outfield wall, but maybe the ones 80-90 feet beyond the wall.

Weak grounder to 2B

Braves finally get out of it!

Fangraphs just did another follow-up on the Chipper Jones swinging at first pitches thing

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/are-ahitters-more-aggressive-on-first-pitches-from-good-pitchers

Turns out Chipper does exactly what he claims-he swings at first pitches when there’s a good pitcher, so he doesn’t get behind, but not as much for poor pitchers.

All other hitters seem to swing very rarely at first pitches, regardless of pitcher quality.

So when Chipper doesn’t swing at your first pitch, you know you’re not worth his time. Awesome.

I’m not so sure it’s a good thing that that little secret’s out…

I think

I’ll trust that with all the extensive scouting opposing teams do, someone has already stumbled on this in the past. Don’t underestimate the resources of advance scouting.

big Cody Johnson at the plate
Strikes out...big surprise.

I really wish Cody would take some length out of his swing and work on his contact.

Announcers keep saying how good Huddy looked

What was Hudson’s final line?

Atlanta IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
Hudson, T 3.0 3 1 1 1 3 0 1.80

Holt makes the 3rd out

Batten down the hatches!
Groundout to Thurston

1-2-3 inning for Marek!

Thats new…

Damn

seems i have a double facepalm to withdraw…

Gotta like that.
A blind duck finds a pond everyone once in a while?

Sure, I’ll take it. Funnier than the age-old broken clock.

Hmm…I like the broken clock one

It’s more functional, but less funny.

So many clocks are digital these days

That not everyone immediately gets that. A broken digital clock is never right.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see how someone couldn’t get that expression. Abundance of digital clocks or not.

What about at midnight and noon?...

as most flash 12:00

lol

yes, there’s that.

Jeff Francoeur lays off a slider off the plate every once in a while?
Thurston grounds out

top of the 8th, 1 out, 8-3 bravos

Hicks flies out to LF
Mitch Jones HOMERUN!
Clevlen makes the 3rd out

Has he done ANYTHING this spring?

nope

Gee, i wonder who’s going down in the first round of cuts…

that should be coming up sooon

It won't be Clevlen.

The first round of cuts will be kids who never had any chance of making the team and organizational filler, like catchers who are here simply because so many pitchers are here; once the extra pitchers go, so do they.

Strike 3

idk whos pitching for us tho..

Cordier?

He’s scheduled

I can’t wait for the video of Heyward’s Homer

Marek is still pitching I think.

That’s what the announcers just said.

thanks

i’m kind of doing a few things at once so I havent been closely listening

thanks

for the play by play. Way better than reading the box score

Yup, Marek still in there pitching.

Deep flyout to RF

Runner moves to 3B. 2 outs bottom of the 8th

Hicks makes a nice play on the ball but has no play

9-4 Braves

Marek K's the last hitter

going to the 9th

Freddie Freeman at the plate!
leading off

good time for a HR, nobody to pass on base

Freeman with a line drive single!
Come on CJ no strikeout
3-2 pitch...
HE WALKS!
Wow

Only took him until now to reach base!

Alright!

better than a K, way better than a DP

Bases loaded walk

10-4 Braves

Gotta scoot, thanks for the play-by-play.
aaaand theres a pitching change

yes?

I see what you did there.

Holt grounds out to 2B

possible DP but the SS couldnt get it out of his glove. 2 outs and a run scores

Sharp grounder to the SS

6-3 groundout but the run scores.

12-4

run support

What would JJ and KK do with this run support? I’m getting a good feeling about 2010.

I'm gonna go out on a limb

And say they’d win a lot of games.

you might be right

soon as I posted it I knew I’s walked into that one

Hicks strikes out

going to the bottom of the 9th!

Cordier with a K!
Popout to 1B

2 outs!

BRAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN!

12-4

Perhaps a tad overly dramatic.

Thanks for all the play by play guys!
