Bench warming
That’s a lot of bench players in today’s lineup. Could it be that the usual lineup is being used more against NL pitchers so that they can learn from it? And therefore get their day off against an AL team?
SwedishBrave - March 8, 2010
I think that there is some truth to that.
I know that Chipper has said he is playing Tuesday to get a look at Halladay. At the moment, Chipper is resting a bruised thumb.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
I just jammed my thumb playing volleyball...
and it hurts like a son of a bitch. So I feel Larry Wayne’s pain….
EyePod - March 8, 2010
That shit's the worst
I did the same thing last weekend chasing down my dog before he ate something, and that junk hurts like a sunuvabitch. I’ve still got the blood-under-the-nail to prove it.
J-Freak - March 8, 2010
I recall a pair of ST games several years in which the Astros had Clemens out there against the Braves on consecutive appearances. In both cases, the entire starting nine were out there to see his stuff.
carpengui - March 8, 2010
oops – that was “several years ago”

I may be the only one left
But I’m really hoping JoJo can finally put it all together this year. I know he doesn’t have a spot on the rotation, but I’m almost hoping he would be the 6th man in case someone needed a rest. If he blows it, then he’s fair game to be sent off. But he’s still young and hopefully he’s learned from his past mistakes, i.e. not listening to veteran help.
Bobby Cocks - March 8, 2010
I agree with you…I enjoyed watching him pitch in Gwinnett last year and I still have a warm spot for all lefty’s and I think we definitely need a lefty in the rotation. However, I think JoJo has ruined his SP chance for us in the rotation going forward and I think his role with the Braves will only be as long relief in the bullpen which is probably what’s suited for him. If we trade him another team would give him a starting chance I’m sure.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
And it’s the work week and I’m back to listening to games in the office. :-)
I’ll try to provide whatever play by play I can. I did notice over the weekend that Wes Timmons got into one of the games late and even got an AB. He was a favorite player of my wife and I last year at Gwinnett and it’s good to see him at Spring Training with the Braves again this year. I’d like for him to get a callup mid season if there are injuries like Reid Gorecki got last year, just to give him a taste of the majors. He’s a great player and a heck of a hustler on the field and can play multiple positions…he’s fun to watch.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
I brought my iphone charger today, just in case. Gonna try out this EDGE nonsense first though.

Hey Beard
Breaking Bad season 2 has been on free on demand by me, idk what cable provider you have, but its worth looking into
bravesguy311 - March 8, 2010
Funny you mention that because I checked just for shits and giggles and found it on demand as well. Had a little 6 hour marathon on Saturday afternoon, haha. Got in another 2 episodes yesterday.
Great, great show. 2nd season is so much better than the first, I’ve been on the edge of my seat several times. Can’t wait for the 21st.
Smoltz's Beard - March 8, 2010
For some reason on my PC when I launch MLB.com’s Flash player to listen to the game I can’t browse to anywhere else on either one of my browsers. That’s kind of weird…
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
It’s sad that the YES network broadcasts all of the Yankee games, but here in Atlanta we don’t have a station that can broadcast all of the Braves games. Peachtree TV should broadcast the damn Spring Training games…better than what they broadcast during the day I’m sure.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Right. The Braves oughta give away the ST broadcast rights for free — just to promote their own product for the season to come. You build a fan base by expanding the options for delivery.
carpengui - March 8, 2010
I don’t think they should give them away, but there are 3 different stations here in Atlanta that broadcast games for the Braves…I’m sure one of them could air a few ST games as well.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
It's not feasible business-wise.
Even if the rights were cheap or free (which they likely are), the production costs of airing a game are higher than the crap Peachtree runs during the day, and the ratings are so low either way that the ad money wouldn’t change. YES probably loses on their broadcasts as well, but it helps build the Yankees and being a fully owned subsidiary of the Yankees, it makes sense.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
Surely though
Sportssouth or Fox Sports could improve their ratings over the garbage day time programming they carry by airing more spring training games.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
which is where TBS comes into play...
oh, wait, we lost that automatic ability to have a major media platform under the same corporate roof.
Mr. Sanchez - March 8, 2010
I’m not at all opposed to this idea.
Lizziebeth - March 8, 2010
melky question
when he is in the game…..where does he fit in our lineup? top of the order or bottom? Where did he play in NY?
bluelg - March 8, 2010
In the Yankees lineup...
…he often batted ninth, but that was because there was no pitcher and they were loaded, so he was one of those sort of second leadoff hitter ninth hitters often. I am not sure where he fit in the lineup when a backup catcher was in or a backup infielder.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
7-9
They hit him 7th, 8th, or 9th. I would think that’s where he would hit in our lineup, as well. Either behind Yunel or Heyward in the 8th spot. I’m sure that’s where Matty D will hit, too when he’s in LF
It’s interesting that the Yankees played him in all 3 OF spots regularly last year. He was mainly used in CF, but got a lot of time in RF and LF.
What’s also really interesting is how much better he was in RF and CF than Left.
Fatvirus - March 8, 2010
I think that was small sample size...
…Melky’s being better in RF and CF than LF. Everything I have heard scouting wise is that he is an average CF and a bit above average in right or left, which makes sense.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
Van Pope a pitcher? This could be interesting.
Zeus12888 - March 8, 2010
Say what???
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
I just read on Van’s facebook page that someone commented about them converting him to a pitcher. It is not a bad idea as he does have a great arm from what I remember seeing him throw the ball over to first from last year.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
true, but a great arm doesn't necessarily translate into a great pitcher
Zeus12888 - March 8, 2010
Without a doubt it doesn’t…but he hasn’t been hitting so I guess it’s worth a try.
Dave_D - March 9, 2010
And the Game Begins, Infante up and takes a high tight FB to start the game.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Infante grounds to 3rd and the 3rd baseman throws a wild pitch to first…but Infante tried to go to 2nd, then changed his mind and got tagged out.

That was the film "Speed" in French, which in France was called "La Vitesse!" Or at least it should have been, but in fact it was called "Speed."

Heyward, McCann, Glaus, Chipper, etc throughout their careers have shown good plate discipline and a propensity to take a walk. If the lineup stays relatively healthy, with the depth at Cox’s disposal, there is a lot of talent to work with, even if players just tend to produce in line with their career averages.

thenightstallion - March 8, 2010
I know there is no real scientific evidence for this...
..but doesn’t it seem that with all the attention of our team (and all of baseball) on Heyward and his approach, all of the Braves hitters seem more patient this spring? (Well, other than Chipper, and he’s just getting his hacks in, we know he’ll get his walks.) If that is true (which it probably isn’t) that is amazing for a kid to have that kind of effect on a team.

Smoltz's Beard - March 8, 2010
well i mean
Hudson has shown more consistency in his career and he wanted to be here for a much cheaper price. of course we dont know if we could have extended Javy for the same price but at the time i guess they were going off consistency and Hudson having a new elbow

then i will say
at least we have Vizcaino lol
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
Argh
I couldn’t get me Bluetooth to play nice with the Mac today, so I went back to listening to the PSP. Then it hit me that the Mac does have a headphone port that I can plug my PSP headphones into…
AllSaintsDay - March 8, 2010
Okay, this comparison is inevitable
Something to keep up with as Spring training progresses.
Matt Wieters 2009: .333/.395/.513, 4 2B, 1 HR (43 PAs)
Jason Heyward 2010: .455/.636/..909, 2 2B, 1 Hr (11 PAs)
Bronn - March 8, 2010
you forgot the most important aspect of his game
THE WALKS!!!
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
I put the OBP
That’s the important number.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
Actually, before the last flyout...
…Heyward had 11 ABs, 16 plate appearances.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
Yeah, you need to account for how many walks and strikeouts too.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
I meant 16
a mis-type
Bronn - March 8, 2010
Jason Heyward is back up again
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
He golfs one to RF for a flyout.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Glaus up now
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
He must be showing a lot of patience.
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
Gotta troubleshoot a problem...
be back
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Hey guys. I love what I am reading so far. I am really excited about our offensive potential this year. I haven’t felt this way about a Braves linup in quite some time.
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
if only
we could trade McLouth for Carl Crawford
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
That would be nice, but I think Schafer is going to be better long term.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
its only meant to be a short term deal. although i dont know who would play CF if that happened lol
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
I’d rather have Crawford long term…so we could just sign him after this year.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
We’ll have Frank get right on that. I’m sure the Yankees will simply ignore him ;]
carpengui - March 8, 2010
Well, we can dream right? I’d love for him to play LF and bat leadoff for us though.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
not worth it money wise.
I would rather do a deal at the deadline where we deal McLouth for Crawford after Schafer is hopefully tearing up AAA
Then we can bring Schafer up to play CF but then Diaz and Cabrera are out of a job . . . well Diaz at least
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
diaz walks
bases loaded
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
Ok, Bases loaded again for Ross
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Heh…Javy Lopes was out in the field today wearing David Ross’ #8
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Did Glaus walk?
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
I think so…I had my headphones off so I missed it. He was up with the bases empty though so I think he, Hinskey and Diaz got on to load them up.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Ross tattoos one (announcers words) down the LF line, but it was foul
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
tatoos
out to be a foul
bighop - March 8, 2010
And I tattoed it...
over the Michelin Tire sign to win the game.

J-Freak - March 8, 2010
Glaus
I just love his patience…
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
Me too!
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
It’s like we have our own Adam Dunn who can actually play good D.
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
haha
Smoltz's Beard - March 8, 2010
And people think I can’t admit it when I am wrong…
:)
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
Patience seems to be a theme so far among many. I like it.
carpengui - March 8, 2010
pitchers are gonna hate our lineup
well after they get past McLouth
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
9.3% career BB rate...very solid
Smoltz's Beard - March 8, 2010
touche
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
ross hits one deep to RF and the RFer misses it.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
3 run double for Ross
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Ros
3 run Double
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
he could be the starting catcher on most teams.
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
indeed
prob one of the best signings by FW last year
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
I'm looking forward to seeing him get in more games this year.
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
Braves 8 - Tigers 1
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Mercy rule? LOL!
carpengui - March 8, 2010
By the way, it’s only the top of the 2nd, with two outs and Ross on 2nd now. Conrad up.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
only the 2nd? wow…
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
Just joined in
how come the Braves refuse to disappoint me this spring?!?!
alligatorimpersonator - March 8, 2010
Let’s hope it not becuase they are waiting until August…
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
haha
alligatorimpersonator - March 8, 2010
wow, Conrad just roped one foul and it had a nice crack sound on the bat.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Braves 8 - Tigers 1 (Middle of 2nd)
But he strikes out on the changeup.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
So, how do the Ps sound like they're doing?...
obviously the bats are having a good day.
Mr. Sanchez - March 8, 2010
Hudson is still pitching…did ok in the 1st but gave up a few hits and a run. Let’s see how he does in the 2nd.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Hudson gave up 1 run and 2 hits in the first (they just said)
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
“Still”? He’s only now coming out for the second time! Probably gotten cold by now.
carpengui - March 8, 2010
Javy V....
gave up a homer to Jimmy Rollins on the first pitch of their game..
sddbaker - March 8, 2010
eh... vindication?
J-Freak - March 8, 2010
Interesting....
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
He is a pitcher who gives up HRs. That doesn’t bode well for him, considering his new home…
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
And we deal them Lowe after he balls out this year and...
they’re desperate for pitching once Sabathia and Burnett go down with major arm injuries, Petite finally decides to retire, while Joba and Hughes continue to look like relief pitchers instead of starters. Then, sign Javy to a cheap 2 yr, $15m deal, and laugh, laugh, laugh.
Mr. Sanchez - March 8, 2010
I hope so.
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
he does have a tendency to give up the long ball...
I feel bad for Javy having to play at Yankee stadium
alligatorimpersonator - March 8, 2010
Alright, lunch time. While I’m gone I have a question for your fantasy baseball players.
How early are you planning on reaching for Heyward in the draft? If you’re involved in a TC league and don’t want to tip your draft strategy don’t worry about answering, but my big money league is a round-protected keeper league and I imagine he’ll be drawing alot of attention. Not sure how early I should target him.
Smoltz's Beard - March 8, 2010
I have been pondering that question for a few days now…lol.
I bet mvhsball takes him in the 3rd or 4th round though.
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
:)
Scott Coleman - March 8, 2010
I took him in the fifth round yesterday, but it was an NL-only league full of Braves fans, so that’s probably not worth much…
J-Freak - March 8, 2010
I'm in a league on ESPN
And I got him in one of the last few rounds.
thenightstallion - March 8, 2010
I took Hanson in the 21st last year (also a round protected keeper). Maybe I can get Heyward in the 16th?
Shark Judge - March 8, 2010
I got hanson in the last round of one of my leagues too.
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
ADP
On Mockdraftcentral is 237.
Shark Judge - March 8, 2010
In a standard mixed league
I just took him with the first pick of the 16th round. That’s probably a bit high, but his ADP on Yahoo! is 212, and I wasn’t going to have the chance at the end of the 17th.
I’d definitely look at him by the end of the 16th/early 17th round.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
That league will treat me well
I got Pujols and Heyward. Game over!
(Also got Hanson)
Bronn - March 8, 2010
Thanks…16th round is doable, I assumed he would be actually going higher than that.
Smoltz's Beard - March 8, 2010
I’ll add that I’m a keeper league as well, and we haven’t drafted yet but I wouldn’t reach beyond our fourth drafting round (which is round 15 after keepers are allotted). In a mixed league there’s still depth to be found in the first few rounds, but he’s not a true sleeper so I wouldn’t wait till the late rounds if you’re truly intent on owning him- in a keeper league he has good value even if he doesn’t start from day one, so I’d say first 3-4 rounds in my scenario.
J-Freak - March 8, 2010
For a keeper league
I wouldn’t wait-I’d go ahead and grab him as soon as you can.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
In a keeper league,...
that definitely enhances his value, and I’d target him as early as I could afford it depending on the team’s other needs/holes to be filled.
And while I’m in a TC league, I’ll tip my hand. He ain’t lasting past round 3 gentleman.
Mr. Sanchez - March 8, 2010
and with teh 1st overall pick, Albert Pujols goes to the…wait a minute…no Pujols? HEYWARD??/ REALLY?
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
In Yahoo mock drafts
I’ve been successfully grabbing him in the 17th or 18th rounds. The earliest I’ve seen someone stretch for him is in the 14th round, but that was the same guy who took Chase Utley instead of Albert Pujols with the first pick of the draft. I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that isn’t exactly relevant data.
kidnarcolepsy - March 8, 2010
Well
You could make a case for taking Utley first, but the 14th is too early for Heyward. I wouldn’t take him there even if I knew it was my only chance to grab him.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
I'm not talking about his first round pick...
I’m talking about the VERY FIRST PICK of the draft. #1. Yeah, okay, position scarcity, I understand that there is some logic to support the pick… but if Albert is available, I’m taking him. Period.
kidnarcolepsy - March 8, 2010
Just saying
The Utley pick isn’t insane. You’re not getting close to his production out of any other 2B, but you could come back down and take Adrian Gonzalez at the end of the second round and still get 40HRs. Or Kendry Morales even later than that and he’ll probably give you 30+ HRs with lots of RBIs.
I’m taking Pujols, but I can understand it.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
It's funny, but
that was exactly the same scenario I was running through in my head. Utley/Gonzalez vs. Pujols and (Pedroia or Kinsler or Zobrist). I dunno. I still like the team with Pujols better, personally, but now that I’ve fiddled around with it, that’s not too bad.
The guy who inspired this post grabbed up Joe Nelson with his second round pick, and Josh Beckett with his 3rd round. I hope he was just play-testing his player rankings.
kidnarcolepsy - March 8, 2010
Lol
Joe Nelson? Maybe he was just schizo.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
Thanks all
Smoltz's Beard - March 8, 2010
Freeman
in the game
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
I hope this doesn't mean that something is wrong with Glaus.
It is only the second inning; of course, Glaus is already 2-2.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
He went 3-3 yesterday… dang.
carpengui - March 8, 2010
well
i think its because of the amount of AB’s they are getting. Later in ST he’ll be in the whole game
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
Please don’t scare me with phrases like “something is wrong with Glaus.” :)
alligatorimpersonator - March 8, 2010
This x a 1000
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
apparently
Umpire keeps shrinking the zone
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
They are shrinking it...
…because the home plate ump was scared after Heyward glared at him after the first pitch he called a strike in the first at bat. Heyward is a big man.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
Then he took three balls
And knocked a tape-measure shot HR with a full count.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
Thurston turns a nice DP, 5-4-3, Hudson gets out of the 2nd.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Good rebound for Huddy.
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
Joe Thurston leading off the top of the 3rd
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Dontrelle Willis is in to pitch.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
ROFLMAO
J-Freak - March 8, 2010
i still feel bad for the kid. He listened to the wrong people and totally got his mechanics screwed up. He used to look so happy on the mound.
I Saw Buzz Beaned - March 8, 2010
lol, that’s just wrong
Smoltz's Beard - March 8, 2010
this will be interesting.
carpengui - March 8, 2010
Is this a charity game or something?
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
OMG, guys watch out, he can be wild.
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
Thurston bounces one up high and it was called a fair ball and they tag him out as he didn’t run.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Bobby will not like that he didn't run.
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
Better rent a place in Lawrencville
Guaranteed
Fatvirus - March 8, 2010
That won’t do much to get him in Bobby’s good graces.
Mountngrown - March 8, 2010
Omar Infante up now
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Infante Ground out, 5-3
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Melky Cabrera up now
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Cabrera flies out, F9
Dontrelle looking good apparently.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Helps when guys are swinging
Bronn - March 8, 2010
Dontrelle was inspired...
…he knew if he allowed a baserunner, he would have to face Heyward.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
It’ll be interesting to see if he comes back out to pitch the 4th.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
BTW, Scherzer has an ERA this spring so far of 30.86….OUCH!!!!
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Geez, he makes Chavez look good. :)
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
Bottom of the 3rd, Hudson still pitching.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Is this one on the radio anywhere?
FineHamAbounds - March 8, 2010
Announcer: “A grounder to the right…the Bermuda Triangle is forming…Hudson covers, but the throw is not in time”
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
They just mentioned how Freeman is built similar to Troy Glaus. I’m sure once Freeman bulks up more he will be about the size of Troy.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
I really hope that they start Freeman at AAA this year….can’t wait to see him again (saw him in Rome a couple of years ago during his great season there).
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
AA
So I can see him in May in Chatt, then up to AAA
bighop - March 8, 2010
Yea, for Chattonooga. :)
I would love to get to see him up close and personal.
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
Big River Beer Garden
No sun in your eyes!
bighop - March 8, 2010
I bet he goes to AA, with a mid season promotion to AAA if all goes well.
10-4 - March 8, 2010
I’m sure you’re right since he didn’t get much time at AA.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Braves need to start their own pickup Basketball team
Glaus – 6’5
Freeman – 6’5
Heyward – 6’6
Chipper – 6’4
McCann – 6’3
Lowe – 6’6
Hanson – 6’6
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
i feel bad
for nate and medlen lol
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
Not to mention
Matt Young
Mountngrown - March 8, 2010
I’m guessing McCann won’t be the point guard.
carpengui - March 8, 2010
There was this skills challenge between big and little Mac on BBTN last night
McCann can’t shoot worth a crap either-Nate pwned him.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
Brian, though
Has some mad QB skills.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
Kyle Cofield is 6’5 also
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Conrad
makes an amazing play
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
Conrad
wants to make the team

Conrad +1; Thurston -1.
carpengui - March 8, 2010
Conrad with a great diving stop up the middle and throws out the batter at first…(seen him do this a lot at Gwinnett…think of this:
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
nice
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
beautiful shot!
Lizziebeth - March 8, 2010
DOB says Tom Verducci of SI is covering the Braves today
for a story on Jason Heyward. That homer looks even better now.
Scott Coleman - March 8, 2010
Oh, please don’t put him on the cover.
carpengui - March 8, 2010
with some reference....
… to his natural ability?
Fatvirus - March 8, 2010
as long as they don’t call it “The Natural”, I am fine with it.
Speaking of that, I just threw away that magazine a few weeks ago…
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
I haven’t done it yet. Want to, but haven’t been able to. I am hoping some Mutts fan will want it one day.
I Saw Buzz Beaned - March 8, 2010
haha
Smoltz's Beard - March 8, 2010
Hudson strikes out the last batter to end the inning then goes over to Conrad and thanks him for his great play on the way back into the dugout.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
would be funny
if Prado struggles and Conrad takes over at 2B by going on a tear
The 2B rotation just doesnt stop lol
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
It could happen, but Conrad isn’t as consistent as Prado, and he’s never been. Prado has always hit at every level, where Brooks hasn’t ever hit that great, but he does enough to get by. He’s a very scrappy player, and very good.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
i was joking
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
I know. :-)
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Prado has actually outplayed his minor-league numbers by quite a bit so far – hence some of our hesitancy about him.
justincredubil02 - March 8, 2010
Well that’s true…but every coach talks about how he’s always hit at every level he’s been at. So I’m not as worries, especially when I hear Chipper talking about how he spends a lot of time in the video room striving to get better.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
In slugging sure...
although that may just be due to physical maturation improving strength, as it has gone from an average of .393 to .451 in the bigs. But his avg and obp have remained pretty close—minors over 6 seasons .300/.353, while so far in the bigs—.307/.361. Doesn’t seem like he’s “outplayed his minor-league numbers by quite a bit” other than slugging, which again may be a product of physically maturing and getting old man strong.
Mr. Sanchez - March 8, 2010
Top of the 4th now, Willis pitching against Heyward
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
3-1 now to Heyward and announcer says he doesn’t want any part of Heyward
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Heyward walks on 5 pitches.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Heyward

I love the Gwinnett alternate jersey with its Beer League quality. Who made them, Joe’s Trophies down at the strip mall?
10-4 - March 8, 2010
I don’t know…but I don’t care for them. My wife bought one for me last year because it was 75% off…it’s fun to wear to the games though. The only downside is that it’s really long so I have to tuck it in. It’s definitely not the same quality as the Atlanta Braves BP jersey which is my favorite shirt to wear to the games (it’s nice and cool).
Dave_D - March 8, 2010

I know i wouldn't wanna take BP after him..
Scott Coleman - March 8, 2010
Does not
bighop - March 8, 2010
might i remind you guys...
conrad went 0 for 22 to end the season last year. ops at .666.
hitting spring training fastballs has never been his weakness. however, i do like conrad and hope he can become a dan uggla type of late bloomer. they have similar minor league numbers, however uggla is/was with a team that could allow him to bloom into a player because they really had no playoff expectations and no superior player blocking him. conrad has always been blocked. it’d be interesting to see what kind of numbers conrad could put up on a regular basis…but not with the braves.
ryan c - March 8, 2010
I think is actually valuable as a super utility player as he has good pop and seems to do best PHing and filling in.
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
im guessing you missed the reply button
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
i'm guessing i didnt...
but thanks for your concern.
ryan c - March 8, 2010
Matt Diaz grounds out, 6-3 - end of the 4th
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Freeman hasn't been bad
But he also hasn’t taken a walk yet this spring.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
Ok, back to work, be back later
Dave_D - March 8, 2010
Thanks for the play -by-play.
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010

Scott Coleman - March 8, 2010
So that Heyward Kid
Pretty much guaranteed to be our starting RFer when the season starts eh?
JasonHeywardisGod - March 8, 2010
unless
he just falls off. however its crazy that they say that the pitchers are ahead of the hitters so what happens when heyward catches up???
drumzalicious - March 8, 2010
the pitchers retire
Scott Coleman - March 8, 2010
HaHa
HEYJUDE - March 8, 2010
I think we just saw what happens...
when Heyward catches up to something in the first inning!
cavebird - March 8, 2010
Well, if the Braves management wasn't lying...
…when they said they would give him a chance to earn the job, he is in pretty good shape. They could still keep him down for financial reasons, however, and if he cools off by the end of spring, they might have an excuse.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
After reading a couple articles on the issue, I imagine we’ll treat him like the Rays did Longoria, and he’ll be in Gwinnet for the first couple weeks of the season.
Shark Judge - March 8, 2010
Doubt it...
especially if we can hammer out a Longoria like deal soon.

I personally think he should be Tommy Hanson’s personal catcher. Tommy is slow to the plate and Rossy will be able to stop the runners from constantly running on him. BMac gets his rest and our lineup doesnt take too much of a hit.
Scott Coleman - March 8, 2010
Someone likely gives him a chance to win a regular job next year...
I hope we can keep him, but he deserves more playing time.

I like it.

Scott Coleman - March 8, 2010
Zero percent chance heyward starts in ATL
He’s 100 percent getting the longoria treatment. What do you want 60Abs of 20 year old Heyward or 600 ABs of 26 year old Heyward?
Colombianconnection - March 8, 2010
There is far more than a zero percent chance.
For one thing, we assume that we’ll sign him long term before then and aren’t too concerned. (We’ll give him the Longoria treatment in that way.) Second, the incentive currently isn’t there to give him the Longoria treatment—-Bobby likes him and is in his final season; Liberty owns the Braves as a tax write-off and will sell them far before six years from now, so they don’t care either.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
Yeah, I’m thinking only 20% chance of the minors; 80% that he starts opening day against the Cubbies (I think that’s right).
carpengui - March 8, 2010
yea but everything you're saying is speculative
Liberty Bank doesn’t care because they might not own them and we might give him a long contract. As sad as it is this is purely a business and with that you work on guarantees. Do I think the braves will give him the Mccann Or Longoria contract? Absolutely. But do I think the Braves will take a risk in not sending him to AAA for a couple of weeks to control him for another year? God no. You send him there for 2-3 weeks (not the Hanson super 2) and then call him up.
Colombianconnection - March 8, 2010
but you're right
The only way I can see that not happening is if Bobby makes a stand.
Colombianconnection - March 8, 2010
And I think Bobby will.
Hell, Bobby had to be convinced to give Heyward a rest day yesterday. And I don’t think Heyward’s performance today will cool Bobby off, to say the least.
cavebird - March 8, 2010
Saying there’s a zero percent chance he starts Opening Day is speculative too, unless you’re Frank Wren.

Fangraphs just did another follow-up on the Chipper Jones swinging at first pitches thing
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/are-ahitters-more-aggressive-on-first-pitches-from-good-pitchers
Turns out Chipper does exactly what he claims-he swings at first pitches when there’s a good pitcher, so he doesn’t get behind, but not as much for poor pitchers.
All other hitters seem to swing very rarely at first pitches, regardless of pitcher quality.
Bronn - March 8, 2010
So when Chipper doesn’t swing at your first pitch, you know you’re not worth his time. Awesome.
FineHamAbounds - March 8, 2010
I’m not so sure it’s a good thing that that little secret’s out…
J-Freak - March 8, 2010

It won't be Clevlen.
The first round of cuts will be kids who never had any chance of making the team and organizational filler, like catchers who are here simply because so many pitchers are here; once the extra pitchers go, so do they.
