The Braves take on one of the Braves Minor League feeder teams from Pittsburgh. Two former Pirates will be in the Braves lineup. In another interesting move, Jay-Hey is batting second in today's lineup. This represents the third spot he's been in during his three spring games.
Nate McLouth, CF
Jason Heyward, RF
Chipper Jones, 3B
Troy Glaus, 1B
Brian McCann, C
Matt Diaz, LF
Eric Hinske, DH
Omar Infante, SS
Brooks Conrad, 2B
On the mound to start it off will be Kenshin Kawakami, followed by Jo-Jo Reyes, Lee Hyde, Erik Cordier, and Juan Abreu -- I'm interested to see all of those pitchers.

Can’t wait to see Hyde pitch and hopefully Abreu won’t look too much like Acosta.
bwellnjonesco - March 4, 2010
I think Hyde is the darkhorse to break camp with us
eaheckman10 - March 4, 2010
Same here
I want to see him up there.
JKowalek - March 4, 2010
Hyde was a stud at Tech?
Bravo22 - March 5, 2010
Can Wren get it over with and trade Jojo to KC already?
redwards95 - March 4, 2010
Kanas City is patiently waiting for him to be placed on waivers.
pancanbra - March 4, 2010
Wren’s waiting until the Royals are desperate enough to trade Jo-Jo straight up for Soria… Shouldn’t be too long.
Jacob Peterson - March 4, 2010
Jojo still has value, just not as a starter. He’d make a great LOOGY (.210/.295/.350 against lefties, with close to a 3:1 k/bb ratio). I think at this point though it’s obvious he just doesn’t have what it takes to get rhb out at the major league level.
dutchschultz - March 4, 2010
Looking at that lineup without Yunel and Prado really makes me appreciate how unbelievable our depth is this year.
BahamaBrave - March 4, 2010
that’s a really good call
Chief Noc-A-Homa - March 4, 2010
Still wouldn't want to push it, though
I don’t think there’s anyone on this team as indispensable as Yunel right now.
Bronn - March 4, 2010
Agree 100%
Just nice to believe the bench can win if we’re missing even more than one starter.
BahamaBrave - March 4, 2010
FYI
Garrett Anderson was signed by the Dodgers. Jon Heyman can suck it. We can all relax.
Andy Braves Fan - March 4, 2010
i think bobby is playing mind games with heyward; bc each spot in the lineup you need a different situational mindset and bobby is testing him; I don’t think bobby has a chance at this battle, but its worth a shot to at least test him; lol
RWH2 - March 4, 2010
Good point. I had also thought that putting him in front of Chipper might mean he gets walked less.
gondeee - March 4, 2010
More importantly, Chipper will get more pitches to hit b/c Heyward will always be on base in front of him.
Jacob Peterson - March 4, 2010
Wait a minute...
We don’t want out RF to walk?? We spend 4 years begging for a walk out of Francine and now we do anything we can for our RF not to walk. Funny how that works.
Scott Coleman - March 4, 2010 via mobile
Doesn't matter to me either way...
…cuz JH looks to walk if he doesn’t gets strikes…. and crush anything in the strike zone. Baserunners == Good.
carpengui - March 4, 2010
Actually, beaserunners = bad when Heyward is up if you’re referring to the safety of the players. Because anyone on the field is in danger when Heyward comes up to bat.
pancanbra - March 4, 2010
Ha! I admit I was worrying about Glenn Hubbard the other day.
carpengui - March 4, 2010
I doubt that lineup position will appreciably effect walks.
By and large, some hitters have to patience to take walks and others don’t. The ones who get a lot of walks can foul off the tough pitches and make pitchers work. If Heyward starts out hot, it isn’t like pitchers are going to groove fastballs to him whereever he is in the lineup. There could be a marginal effect on walk totals, but it shouldn’t be significant.
cavebird - March 4, 2010
I completely agree with you
Zeus12888 - March 4, 2010
Lol
I wish that were an actual Bobby quote: “just for shits, I’m gonna bat Heyward second.” This could be the first time that pitchers will pitch around someone to get to Chipper.
Speaking of, I really wanna see some production out of Chip, Glaus, and McLouth. I’m worried about all three of those guys producing. J-hey or not, I still could forsee this ball club struggling for runs. And unfortunately we don’t have Vazquez to throw shutouts every other outing anymore.
pancanbra - March 4, 2010
For some reason that caption under Bobby really cracked me up.
vooodooo - March 4, 2010
I know…I think actually it’s the picture that really sells it. It actually looks like Bobby just said that.
pancanbra - March 4, 2010
The funny thing about it is, it’s something that Bob would actually say.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - March 4, 2010
Oh yeah
Bobby’s got a mouth like a sailor
alligatorimpersonator - March 4, 2010
I was gonna ask if he literally said that, because I didn’t think he did, but could totally picture him saying.
MatM - March 4, 2010
No tv for today's game, right?
Scott Coleman - March 4, 2010 via mobile
(cries like a damned babeh)
Oh well. I think some game is going to be on MLB tonite at 7…..
We’re getting there…
Chief Noc-A-Homa - March 4, 2010
I like this lineup..
I like any lineup that has a modern day dragon-slayer named Jason Heyward in it.
SidKotchman - March 4, 2010
KK is dragon-slayer
KK is dragon-slayer

Curious, Anyone use MLB.TV on a Roku player, and is it worth it?
Can’t find much to read on it from anyone who subscribes and uses it on roku..googled and everything..I’ve also posted this a couple times, sorry If it’s repetetive..just not wanting to drop the bones on it if its not worth it.
SidKotchman - March 4, 2010
I have not used a Roku player, but I was considering it so if anyone knows anything it would be doubly appreciated

Does anyone wanna let me borrow their MLB.TV account and password?
alligatorimpersonator - March 4, 2010
Any luck with a radio feed of any sort?
Chipfan04 - March 4, 2010
For the money you pay for mlb.tv, you’d think they could broadcast all ST games…
Zeus12888 - March 4, 2010
It’s not really MLB.TV’s fault, all they do is broadcast out different feeds, and if the game isn’t on TV at all, they have no feed to send out. Regardless, it would be nice for them to throw a camera out there for us
eaheckman10 - March 4, 2010
You know how ESPN did that mess with the Tim Tebow cam? I would really enjoy one of those for Bobby in honor of his last season.

Plus, this becomes a costly venture when he throws the cap down and stomps on it.

Zeus12888 - March 4, 2010
I agree
Nate is an excellent basestealer
eaheckman10 - March 4, 2010
I bet he could steal 30-35 if we ran him often
alligatorimpersonator - March 4, 2010
I think he has a green light most of the time…
Dave_D - March 4, 2010
At least. Before he came to Atlanta I know they made a big deal about him not being caught in 3 years
eaheckman10 - March 4, 2010
I hadn’t heard that. That’s fantastic.
Gage23 - March 4, 2010
Ok, at home today so I can listen to the whole game without someone stopping by my desk and bothering me
Heyward is up!
Dave_D - March 4, 2010
what are you using to listen to the game?
alligatorimpersonator - March 4, 2010
MLB.TV game feed (just the sound)
Dave_D - March 4, 2010
ah..which requires money
alligatorimpersonator - March 4, 2010
Yeah…never paid for it before so I figured I would give it a shot this year.
Dave_D - March 4, 2010

eaheckman10 - March 4, 2010
Is McLouth allowed to go to 3rd if it hit Heyward?
Gage23 - March 4, 2010
I didn’t think so. Maybe he went back to 2nd but if he did either they didn’t announce it or I missed it

justincredubil02 - March 4, 2010
I think we have enough in our Minor league to cover.
We would just have to bring one up.
HEYJUDE - March 4, 2010

award6 - March 4, 2010
I know it is only ST, but I do not like the first pitch swings that we have seen over the past few days.
*start up the “Fire TP!” bandwagon…
justincredubil02 - March 4, 2010
actually,
this game alone, we’ve had lots of good discipline.
Zeus12888 - March 4, 2010
Church up first to face JoJo
Zeus12888 - March 4, 2010
ryan church for the pirates now? didnt hear that
Slee - March 4, 2010
good signing for them, IMHO
Zeus12888 - March 4, 2010
I agree. I thought we should have brought him back.
justincredubil02 - March 4, 2010
Didn’t we ultimately have to let him go because of the arbitration debacle with Soriano? We had to clear a place on the roster for him because of the premature signing of Wagner and Saito. That was my understanding at least…
Gage23 - March 4, 2010
No. We just didn’t want to pay his arb. increase, and we have a good amount of OFers already. I understand why we didn’t bring him back, but I think he would have been great off the bench.
justincredubil02 - March 4, 2010
In his stead, though
We ended up with Hinske, who gives us a bit more overall bench versatility, and is cheaper. There’s not a lot of difference between their offense impact. The only thing Hinske can’t do is play CF, but Melky will end up as our back-up CF.
Bronn - March 5, 2010
All good points. I am still somewhat of a fan of the “Church for leadoff” idea though. That is the one thing that he could bring us that Hinske couldn’t. But, that would involve playing him on an everyday basis, and in this lineup, I just can’t make an argument for that.
justincredubil02 - March 5, 2010
I’m out guys, more class. Take it easy
GoBravesNY - March 4, 2010

vooodooo - March 4, 2010
I hope 2010 stats look better than these.
HEYJUDE - March 4, 2010
Yeah the DP is the true “rally killer”, IMHO, and today’s performance made me go look this up. Admittedly, it’s actually better than I expected — averaging under one per game — but I’d much rather see an emphasis on productive outs.
carpengui - March 4, 2010
indeed
it could also be how old and slow our team has been that no one is fast enough to break up the DP
drumzalicious - March 4, 2010

2009 GIDP by player
Yunel wins: 21
Prado and McCann 17 each
Chipper and Matty 14 each
FUGA – 11
FYF – 10…. but of course he also added 3 for the Mutts… unless they aren’t counting his GITP.
carpengui - March 4, 2010
2008 GIDP by player
Yunel 24; Frenchy 18; McCann 17.
carpengui - March 4, 2010
Looks like TP needs to have a talk with Esco… maybe a couple of others.
carpengui - March 4, 2010
I don't think it is a big deal.
Double plays suck, but often better hitting teams (or better OBP teams) get them more because they tend to have more runners on base. Last year, Yunel tended to bat behind our best OBP guys for a large chunk of the season (Chipper and McCann), which gave him more opportunities to ground into double plays.
cavebird - March 4, 2010
That’s true. You can’t GIDP unless you have runners on base. So it’s somewhat of a good thing… except for how annoying it is.
Gage23 - March 4, 2010
Double-plays are the second worst possible outcome of any at-bat. They always suck.
