Spring Training Open Thread: Pirates at Braves

The Braves take on one of the Braves Minor League feeder teams from Pittsburgh. Two former Pirates will be in the Braves lineup. In another interesting move, Jay-Hey is batting second in today's lineup. This represents the third spot he's been in during his three spring games.

Nate McLouth, CF
Jason Heyward, RF
Chipper Jones, 3B
Troy Glaus, 1B
Brian McCann, C
Matt Diaz, LF
Eric Hinske, DH
Omar Infante, SS
Brooks Conrad, 2B

On the mound to start it off will be Kenshin Kawakami, followed by Jo-Jo Reyes, Lee Hyde, Erik Cordier, and Juan Abreu -- I'm interested to see all of those pitchers.

Can’t wait to see Hyde pitch and hopefully Abreu won’t look too much like Acosta.

I think Hyde is the darkhorse to break camp with us

Same here

I want to see him up there.

Hyde was a stud at Tech?

Can Wren get it over with and trade Jojo to KC already?

Kanas City is patiently waiting for him to be placed on waivers.

Wren’s waiting until the Royals are desperate enough to trade Jo-Jo straight up for Soria… Shouldn’t be too long.

Jojo still has value, just not as a starter. He’d make a great LOOGY (.210/.295/.350 against lefties, with close to a 3:1 k/bb ratio). I think at this point though it’s obvious he just doesn’t have what it takes to get rhb out at the major league level.

Looking at that lineup without Yunel and Prado really makes me appreciate how unbelievable our depth is this year.

that’s a really good call

Still wouldn't want to push it, though

I don’t think there’s anyone on this team as indispensable as Yunel right now.

Agree 100%

Just nice to believe the bench can win if we’re missing even more than one starter.

FYI

Garrett Anderson was signed by the Dodgers. Jon Heyman can suck it. We can all relax.

i think bobby is playing mind games with heyward; bc each spot in the lineup you need a different situational mindset and bobby is testing him; I don’t think bobby has a chance at this battle, but its worth a shot to at least test him; lol

Good point. I had also thought that putting him in front of Chipper might mean he gets walked less.

More importantly, Chipper will get more pitches to hit b/c Heyward will always be on base in front of him.

Wait a minute...

We don’t want out RF to walk?? We spend 4 years begging for a walk out of Francine and now we do anything we can for our RF not to walk. Funny how that works.

Doesn't matter to me either way...

…cuz JH looks to walk if he doesn’t gets strikes…. and crush anything in the strike zone. Baserunners == Good.

Actually, beaserunners = bad when Heyward is up if you’re referring to the safety of the players. Because anyone on the field is in danger when Heyward comes up to bat.

Ha! I admit I was worrying about Glenn Hubbard the other day.

I doubt that lineup position will appreciably effect walks.

By and large, some hitters have to patience to take walks and others don’t. The ones who get a lot of walks can foul off the tough pitches and make pitchers work. If Heyward starts out hot, it isn’t like pitchers are going to groove fastballs to him whereever he is in the lineup. There could be a marginal effect on walk totals, but it shouldn’t be significant.

I completely agree with you
Lol

I wish that were an actual Bobby quote: “just for shits, I’m gonna bat Heyward second.” This could be the first time that pitchers will pitch around someone to get to Chipper.

Speaking of, I really wanna see some production out of Chip, Glaus, and McLouth. I’m worried about all three of those guys producing. J-hey or not, I still could forsee this ball club struggling for runs. And unfortunately we don’t have Vazquez to throw shutouts every other outing anymore.

For some reason that caption under Bobby really cracked me up.

I know…I think actually it’s the picture that really sells it. It actually looks like Bobby just said that.

The funny thing about it is, it’s something that Bob would actually say.

Oh yeah

Bobby’s got a mouth like a sailor

I was gonna ask if he literally said that, because I didn’t think he did, but could totally picture him saying.

No tv for today's game, right?

(cries like a damned babeh)

Oh well. I think some game is going to be on MLB tonite at 7…..

We’re getting there…

I like this lineup..

I like any lineup that has a modern day dragon-slayer named Jason Heyward in it.

KK is dragon-slayer

KK is dragon-slayer

Curious, Anyone use MLB.TV on a Roku player, and is it worth it?

Can’t find much to read on it from anyone who subscribes and uses it on roku..googled and everything..I’ve also posted this a couple times, sorry If it’s repetetive..just not wanting to drop the bones on it if its not worth it.

I have not used a Roku player, but I was considering it so if anyone knows anything it would be doubly appreciated

can't we just have heyward pitch too?
He play RF

AND DH.

About to pull my hair out. Brought a radio to work, and it won’t work inside this frakkin dungeon either. Dammit, need me some baseball.

Should be able to listen on Braves.com

Unless your work blocks that content.

With an mlb.tv account

Yeah

Just realized- I thought they were offering free audio during spring training. ugh.

Thanks, though!

Im so excited

to finally be able to sit down and watch a game for once

Does anyone wanna let me borrow their MLB.TV account and password?

Any luck with a radio feed of any sort?

For the money you pay for mlb.tv, you’d think they could broadcast all ST games…

It’s not really MLB.TV’s fault, all they do is broadcast out different feeds, and if the game isn’t on TV at all, they have no feed to send out. Regardless, it would be nice for them to throw a camera out there for us

You know how ESPN did that mess with the Tim Tebow cam? I would really enjoy one of those for Bobby in honor of his last season.

Warning: Bobby Hat Cam content may be unrated.

Warning: Bobby Hat Cam content may be unrated.

Hopefully not for nudity…

Depends on just how close he gets to the umpires.

Plus, this becomes a costly venture when he throws the cap down and stomps on it.

Ryan Church batting cleanup? lol

Don’t laugh too hard. He was maybe an injury away from hitting cleanup for us

“Jo-Jo Reyes playing with a chip on his shoulder because he believes he hasn’t gotten a fair shake”

HAHA. I heard that too.

Somehow...

JeyHey will find a way to hit a GRAND SLAM from the 2 hole in his FIRST at bat of the game!!!!

Online radio feed anyone?

McCutchen out 6-3

Crosby pops out to SS

Crosby pops up to Infante at short. 2 outs on 4 pitches I think so far

I’ll let you do the play by play here, I’ll give the color :-p

Haha

I’ll do the best I can

1-2-3 inning for KK on about 8 pitches!

Milledge pops out to Brooks Conrad. Good quick first by Kenshin

Glad McCutchen didn’t get on…even from the stretch, KK has a sloww delivery

If anyone is interested, here is the gameday link
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2010_03_04_pitmlb_atlmlb_1
It seems to be like yesterday where it only updates every half inning, but it’s better than nothing

Nate showing some good discipline!

McLouth walks on 4 pitches

aaaand its JAY HEY time!

Anybody else having issues with the iTouch app? I can’t listen to the game it’s killing me!

McLouth steals easily

Nate swipes 2B without a throw! Lets please see more of that this year!

I agree

Nate is an excellent basestealer

I bet he could steal 30-35 if we ran him often

I think he has a green light most of the time…

At least. Before he came to Atlanta I know they made a big deal about him not being caught in 3 years

I hadn’t heard that. That’s fantastic.

Ok, at home today so I can listen to the whole game without someone stopping by my desk and bothering me

Heyward is up!

what are you using to listen to the game?

MLB.TV game feed (just the sound)

ah..which requires money

Yeah…never paid for it before so I figured I would give it a shot this year.

Pass ball, hits Heyward, he goes to First and McLouth moves to 3rd

6 outta 7 OBP.

McLouth slides over to 3rd on a wild pitch
which apparently hit Heyward, who is now on 1st

Is McLouth allowed to go to 3rd if it hit Heyward?

I didn’t think so. Maybe he went back to 2nd but if he did either they didn’t announce it or I missed it

good point – I thought that made it a dead ball.

Jay Hey to 1st on a HBP...Morton's wild
Chip with men on the corners...0 out...i like it
oh jesus chip. 6-4-3 DP with no RBI

DP for Chipper, 2 outs

Chipper’s rackin up the DP’s this spring

There we go CLEANUP MAN!
Pirates 0 - Braves 1

Glaus hits a gapper to LC…McLouth scores. Single for Glaus.

Glaus singles in Nate

Morton REALLY wild today

…or actually Jaramillo just cant catch it. Glaus to 2nd on PB

I can only imagine

the fear of middle infielders when Heyward is bearing down on them trying to break up a double play.

It's gotta be like being tied to the traintracks

full count to Mac

Mac flashing the discipline too! BB
MattyD up to bat!

Matty quickly down 0-2

Right where he wants ’im…

Diaz down on strikes...

whiffs on a big Morton CB

Is this game on any station around atlanta besides WFOM 1230?

WFN 1340, apparently.

I can’t get either on my old beat-up radio

None of the stations broadcasting the game have a website with a live feed, this blows!

1340 aint getting the game

Why does DOB keep saying its on 680?

Church with a single

Jeff Clemente with a 1 pitch GIDP!

any video links?

Alvarez K’s lookin!

Anyone know how many pitches Chipper saw on his DP? Or what the count was?

Pretty sure it was something like 1-1 or 1-0
KK looking sharp

Don and Jim back in the booth on Sat

Hinske works from 0-2 to 3-2, but grounds out to 1st

Infante with a rocket but right to to SS
Brooks Conrad

walks up to “Day Tripper”

Brooksy with a BB

Nate walks up to “Walk the Line”

walk the line was because of brooks BB i thought

oh good point

you’re probably right there

Brooksy with a SP too!

SB*

Sounds like a serious case of Grand Larceny going on today.

I hope its a sign of things to come.

Nate with a groundout

Zeus12888,

Thanks for the play by play :)

No problem guys, just doin my time :)
Infante makes a nice leaping grab

(or so it sounds like) to retire LaRoche

Delwyn Young

with a 1-0 single right back up the middle.

Man on 1st, 1 out

Zeus, How are you watching the games? Youre about 5 ahead of my MLB app.

i dont think there’s a video feed today….radio only

I just sorta meant how is he getting his play by play

I’m listening to the mlb.tv radio feed…I wish I was watching

Jason Jaramillo up for Pitt
Jaramillo grounds out to pitcher, Young to 2nd

Man on 2nd, 2 outs, McCutchen up

Announcers talking all about P90X…has anyone ever tried this? They’re raving about it

i do the ab ripper x part of it that a buddy at school download offline and its intense; great work out in about 15 min

Yep I’m on it now. It’s pretty good but the guy on all the discs is annoying.

+1

I just dubbed a set from my co-worker. That dude has some serious issues with being hyper-critical, especially over soup.

Yea I agree. I don't care for his fake motivation tactics either.

It’s an intense program though. You get what you put into it I guess.

McCutchen swings through a 3-0 fastball
And McCutchen walks on 5...

Probably not the worst guy to walk

Jo-Jo ahead of Crosby 0-2 now

What’s up, everyone? How are the guys looking today?

KK looked (sounded) good, Glaus got a RBI

My boy, KK, coming through! I like to hear it.

How was his control? That is my biggest concern for him this season.

Uh oh...

Crosby singles up the middle, Young Scores, 1-1 game

Lastings Milledge up

Come on JoJo, you’re not making a good case here

as much as i wanted him to do well, i think jo-jo maybe a lost cause

This,

and we don’t really need him, imo.

I like to have the insurance though. It is comforting to know that if one of our guys goes down, we don’t have to scramble to sign some pitcher that is still sitting out there – like say, Philly or NY would have to do.

I think we have enough in our Minor league to cover.

We would just have to bring one up.

Right. And I assume that JoJo will be one of those. I don’t want him on the MLB roster.

Hey guys

got a free moment. How we doing?

KK=good. JoJo=bad

who’s surprised?

Milledge fouls out to Glaus!

1-1 Mid 3rd

Does anyone have a Gameday link? I can’t find it on mlb.com

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2010_03_04_pitmlb_atlmlb_1

Gracias.

its also not updating…

just like yesterday

damn

So I can get updates every half inning…good job, MLB!

yeah…kinda sucks…
But at least we have TC ST Open Thread!

although I'm going to have to leave in 15 minutes. It'd help if someone would have updates

I’m with ya, dude. Thursdays are “Meetings galore” days for me.

haha. This is the only time I could get out of class

Jay-Hey broken bat groundout to 3rd…gotten by 1/2 of a step

Whats his line so far?

0-1

HBP, GO

woah. HBP.. Heyward or not, doesn’t it seem kind of early for that?

haha, dont think morton meant to do that, he just has no control

lol yea Morton had 3 BBs, a HBP, and a WP

wow. I thought he was ripping up the Minors for us. What happened?

He was only semi-decent last season in Pitt too. I think he was just one that we overrated, like usual.

hmm. okay. Darn. He’s got a great baseball name. Stop wasting it

It seemed very unintentional. Just grazed him
today

0-1 HBP

The ball learned from earlier when it hit him that it was impossible to break Heyward, so it later broke his bat instead.

Chip gets on first…i missed how…:(

Glaus up 3-0

and he walks on 4 pitches!

I think I could get used to hearing/reading that.

Glaus walks, runners on 1st and 2nd

McCann up now…

he’s up 3-1 in the count

fouled off a fastball, now it’s 3-2 with one out

They said Minor topped out at 93 MPH yesterday.

who’s they?

Idk, but my grandmother thinks a lot of they. Thinks they know everything.

They say imports get the best mileage. The Chevy Traver— STFU

What a waste of a draft pick.

wow, 93?

I thought Minor was considered more of a soft-tosser?

McCann pops up 3-2 Slider, but catcher and pitcher fighting over it and it falls.

McCann walks, bases loaded.

Did Chipper GIDP with the bases juiced earlier? It says he has 2 LOBs…

He did GDIP after Heywards HBP with Nate on 2nd

so only 2 on? I thought the runner on 1st is not considered a LOB, since he was ruled out and off the base-paths?

Anyone remember when Heap almost had a GS last year against the Muts?

I remember I kept predicting that he would hit one, and that he almost did in that game…everyone was pissed at me for jinxing it.

I was there

and my dad called, he’s gonna hit a GS. I’m like they’re cursed. then of course a WP so it was only a 3 run HR.. damn karma

Mac pops up, but no Pirate wants to get it! Falls for a hit!

I lie...

it falls foul, then Mac draws a walk

haha, pirates looking like the mets out there

bases loaded, 1 out, for MATTYD!

Mattyy D 1st pitch GIDP. SIGH

Nooooo

oooooo

I know it is only ST, but I do not like the first pitch swings that we have seen over the past few days.

*start up the “Fire TP!” bandwagon…

actually,

this game alone, we’ve had lots of good discipline.

Church up first to face JoJo

ryan church for the pirates now? didnt hear that

good signing for them, IMHO

I agree. I thought we should have brought him back.

Didn’t we ultimately have to let him go because of the arbitration debacle with Soriano? We had to clear a place on the roster for him because of the premature signing of Wagner and Saito. That was my understanding at least…

No. We just didn’t want to pay his arb. increase, and we have a good amount of OFers already. I understand why we didn’t bring him back, but I think he would have been great off the bench.

In his stead, though

We ended up with Hinske, who gives us a bit more overall bench versatility, and is cheaper. There’s not a lot of difference between their offense impact. The only thing Hinske can’t do is play CF, but Melky will end up as our back-up CF.

All good points. I am still somewhat of a fan of the “Church for leadoff” idea though. That is the one thing that he could bring us that Hinske couldn’t. But, that would involve playing him on an everyday basis, and in this lineup, I just can’t make an argument for that.

I’m out guys, more class. Take it easy

yay class! enjoy!

Church called out on strikes! 1 K for JoJo

ugh i wish 1230 and 1340 would stream from their website

anyone watching this game
No video
radio's all we got

Not being broadcast, I think everyone is listening to it (I am)

yeah on MLB.tv right? i dont have a membership with them so i was wondering if it was streaming online

JoJo walks Clement (his first of the day)

Alvarez up now.

JoJo walks Clemente on 5 pitches…Alvarez up

Another K for JoJo

JoJo strikes out Alvarez on a full count!

It’s a walkfest….Conrad is up! Runners on 1st and 2nd….

Then Conrad gets picked off at 2nd.

Conrad Doubles

Brooksy overruns 2nd and gets tagged out,

Parr still pitching. Crosby at the bat

Crosby grounds out to SS

Freeman in at 1st base!

Milledge walks on 4 pitches.

Church up

1-2 count for Church

Parr sits down Church! K looking!
Except for the walk, Parr is having a good outing.

Even, 2-2 for Clement

Couldn’t Parr be a good long relief/emergency starter option behind Medlen?

Clemente pops up, to end the inning.

And with that, I'm out for a while guys

If someone else can pick up the play by play, that would be awesome.

All of y’all have a great day and pull the Bravos through!

Bottom of the 6th, Hinske up to bat

walk for hinske on 4 straight

Lead-off walk for Hinske
Omar up

Yep,

I like him.

Gregor Blanco up

I think Conrad is in the lead for the final bench spot

come on blanco…clear the bases :)

Could anyone give me a brief recap of the game so far?

well i joined in late but conrad has got 2 doubles..mccan had a double

Braves up 3-1

We’ve walked 7 or 8 times, Jay-hey went 0-2 with a HBP, Glaus had an RBI single and a walk, Chip had a hit

Jo-Jo,

Didn’t look good imo.

he hasn't in 3 years lol

thanks everyone. Looks like KK did good as well.

I think it's time to cut bait with him..

and replace him with Parr.

or "sound" :)
Blanco behind, 1-2
conrad...

can hit a fastball. that’s not his problem along with almost every other 4A player that struts his stuff in spring training.

Full count for Blanco

Glaus RBI single

Conrad RBI double

Hey 0-2 HBP

hopefully...

between conrad, clevlen, and mitch jones, one of those 4A players will break through and pull a jack cust.

Personally I like Matt Young

Hopefully he plays well this spring

agreed...

however, i dont see matt young as a 4a player. he seems like he has the skillset to be a backup outfielder.

I like Hicks also, especially after that long hr yesterday,:)
Blanco walks, Bases Loaded with Mitch Jones at the plate
Jones will hit a GS
Another walk, bases juiced!

we really should have 6 or 7 runs with all of these baserunners…

sac fly for jones, 4-1 atl
Well I was wrong lol!
Atleast he didn't GIDP

groundout to 2nd

Pirates’ pitchers have given up 11 walks so far

Yet we only lead by 3

I think that was the Pirates goal to put guys on and make the Braves hit into a DP lol.

Abreu now pitching

Haha

Announcers said he looked like Acosta…

Hopefully he doesn't pitch like him lol
This is the guy i've been wanting to see

I heard he can hit 100!

Hicks at short now

so

if this schedule is right we have to wait till tuesday for another televised game? Then looks like an average of 2 games a week being televised . . . which means MLB.TV got me!!!!

Me too...
sucks

because all of these radio games seem to be aired for free in some places

Wooo, Abreu struck out Alvarez

Alright Juan!
What are they saying about his stuff?

Ewww…
Andy LaRoche hits a solo HR

laroche homers

Homer for the lesser LaRoche

What inning?

Top 7th

Thanks
Well Jude he's looking like Acosta lol!
Kinda, sounds that way, ugh...
But i'll give him a pass since it's his 1st ST with the Braves
Yea,

same here.

Crap Come on Juan!

7th inning stretch

Freddie Freeman at-bat

And he flies out to left field

Thank you, Pirates...

for giving us free online radio!
It’s much appreciated!

I like how Freeman goes to the opposite field

Sammons pops-out to First Baseman
CJ up now

CJ grounds out to 2B…

jojo haters

while i can understand your frustration, dont give up on him yet. he’s been really good in the minors for 3 straight years.

I haven't read where anyone has said they hate Jo Jo,

and I have been in every game thread. just sayin’

I hate Jo Jo

quite a bit

Lee Hyde pitching now

Sounds like Hyde broke Raynor’s bat. Sawed him off on an inside pitch

Raynor lines-out to Freeman

Followed by Crosby poppping out to Cody Johnson on the first pitch

*Friday, not Crosby

I’ll gladly pay Friday for a pop-out Thursday.

And Hyde gets another fly out. Works a quick 8th

anyone see

the mets signed calero. but escobar will start on the DL

No, news to me.
Hinske rips a single by 1B
nvm, foul ball
Strikes out looking...

I demand instant replay review!

Brandon Hicks up

Full count for Hicks

And walks
Conrad up next

the bucs pitching coach must be having a fit by now.

If Conrad gets a hit i'm crowing him now lol

Conrad hits a lazy fly-ball to LF.
2 outs, man on first, Blanco AB

Pitcher keeps checking Hicks at first

2-2 count for Blanco

Hicks takes off, but Blanco fouls pitch

And Blanco strikes out to end the 8th

Sorry, but what inning are we in?

MLB says the 6th, but there’s just no way..

About to enter the top of the 9th
nvm

going into 9th…

Lol

Pirates announcers debating how to pronounce Cordier.

They settled on Cord-ee-ay
good guess...

Cordier is hitting 98 mph with his fastball

Is he throwing them for strikes?

Got to a full count, but ended up walking Moss

Pearce flys out to CJ, 1 out

Moss steals 2B. Already halfway there when Cordier threw the ball

And then Alvarez pops up for the 2nd out

Team Stats: GIDP

2009: Best – Phillies (90), DBacks (94). Worst – Astros (153).
            Braves – 26th (142).
            [Oddly: Yankees 27th; Mets 28th]
2008: Best – Fish & Brewers (98). Worst – WSox (158).
            Braves – 20th (144).
            [Phils 5th; Dbacks 4th; Yankees 25th]
2007: Best – Fish (107), Brewers (112). Worst: Cards & Mariners (154).
            Braves 15th (137).

I hope 2010 stats look better than these.

Yeah the DP is the true “rally killer”, IMHO, and today’s performance made me go look this up. Admittedly, it’s actually better than I expected — averaging under one per game — but I’d much rather see an emphasis on productive outs.

indeed

it could also be how old and slow our team has been that no one is fast enough to break up the DP

those 3 years

were all escobars fault lol

Hell no it was Frenchy

LOL

2009 GIDP by player

Yunel wins: 21
Prado and McCann 17 each
Chipper and Matty 14 each
FUGA – 11
FYF – 10…. but of course he also added 3 for the Mutts… unless they aren’t counting his GITP.

2008 GIDP by player

Yunel 24; Frenchy 18; McCann 17.

Looks like TP needs to have a talk with Esco… maybe a couple of others.

I don't think it is a big deal.

Double plays suck, but often better hitting teams (or better OBP teams) get them more because they tend to have more runners on base. Last year, Yunel tended to bat behind our best OBP guys for a large chunk of the season (Chipper and McCann), which gave him more opportunities to ground into double plays.

That’s true. You can’t GIDP unless you have runners on base. So it’s somewhat of a good thing… except for how annoying it is.

Double-plays are the second worst possible outcome of any at-bat. They always suck.

Cordier walks Walker (heh)

Men on first and second
Bernier up

Fly ball to RF, game over
Braves win 4-2

Yay!

Thanks for the play by play!

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!
