The Braves will take another stab at the Mets today, this time at their home park of corporate awesomness.
The lineup for today:
Melky Cabrera, CF
Martin Prado, 2B
Chipper Jones, 3B
Troy Glaus, 1B
Jason Heyward, RF
Yunel Escobar, SS
Matt Diaz, LF
David Ross, C
Brent Clevlen, DH
Tim Hudson gats the start followed by Jonny Venters, Peter Moylan, Eric O'Flaherty, Stephen Marek, Jeff Lyman, and Mariano Gomez.
I think it's telling how Cox keeps putting Heyward in prominant spots in the batting order. I had thought Heyward would have been more protected in the order, hitting behind Escobar in the seventh spot, but here he is ahead of Yunel, and he hit third yesterday. It might be a lefty-righty thing today, but Heyward could break up the righties just as well hitting behind Escobar. They sure are putting Jason right into the mix... NO FEAR!
The awesomeness of Jason Heyward not to be understated, he spent much of last night answering fan questions on his twitter feed. I don't know how long he can keep that generosity up, but what a great down-to-earth fellow.

Does anyone know who the Mets are throwing today?
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
From metsblog.com
Outside of Misch- who are they?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Kunz was a first round pick out of Oregon State I think. The rest are garbage
eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010
Kunz is a guy that has a great sinker anf nothing else. He always has a 60% plus gb rate in the minors.
The Mets are apparently trying to convert him into a starter. Niesen is a lefty who has pretty ridiculous amounts of movement on his pitches, and has a real shot at winning the second lefty job out of spring training. He’s actually a fairly interesting prospect, and likely the only Met pitcher worth paying attention to today.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
Those tweets are painful to read.
TradeAndruw - March 3, 2010
Seriously…
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
Oh come on...
Give the kid a break…he’s a kid, and they are actually better than what I read from a lot of twenty year olds. I also think he adapts to the style of the tweets he’s receiving….
sddbaker - March 3, 2010
Freeman tweets like a normal adult, no excuse for Heyward to sound like an 11-year-old asian girl.
TradeAndruw - March 3, 2010
apparently Freeman calls himself Freeto. Either way, I can’t get over his background picture so I’m okay without the twitter
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Agreed. It’s not like he went to college. He has obvious baseball smarts, and that’s all we can ask.
Shark Judge - March 3, 2010
As much as I jump on "texting" language on message boards...
…I have to give Heyward a break here. It isn’t lack of education; he graduated high school and could have gone to college but had the intelligence to know better than to turn down the bonus money he was offered. The language is, alas, the language of today’s youth. It’s not that he cannot form complete sentences or type in proper English, it is that he doesn’t because that is not the convention among tweeters of a certain age.
cavebird - March 3, 2010
Anyone know where I may possibly see/hear this game in Texas?
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
there might be a link later on. i’ll find out
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Streams won’t work for me on a work computer…
/sadface
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
sadface indeed. especially because there are none as of now
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Now how could Heyward break up a righties block if he bats right handed?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
um, because he hits Lefty.
carpengui - March 3, 2010
I’m just going to let that one go…
gondeee - March 3, 2010
forgive me, for I have sinned. That sounded pompous and was the best I had. I’m clearly not having a good morningGoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
He’s been doing impromptu Twitter interview sessions the last week or so. I think he’s become a little obsessed. He even got Freddie on there.
cbwilk - March 3, 2010
I saw that. It actually scared me
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Unfortunately....
I think I’m getting a little obsessed with Twitter.
sddbaker - March 3, 2010
Let's just put an end to this...
Give Jason a number under 50 and declare him to be a major leaguer.
carpengui - March 3, 2010
Better yet...
Let’s just give him the ROY and MVP too.
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
Might as well just start engraving that plaque in Cooperstown
eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010
Well they already have a spot picked out fro him, right?
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
Spot?...
the man will need an entire wing of his own.
Mr. Sanchez - March 3, 2010
+1
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
And seriously...
thanks for the 2k10 comments. Now the question is can I get the game without the wife bitching it isn’t Mario?
Mr. Sanchez - March 3, 2010
No worries, sorry I didn’t have much to say about other facets of the game. I can say that I find the interface easier to navigate, but unfortunately the music they play is still pretty bad. Let me know if you end up getting it, I’d be interested to see how it plays on the Wii.
I can see myself putting alot of time into the My Player mode, if it’s anywhere near as good as the NHL Be A Pro mode it’ll keep me coming back for more (now I kind of want to try out the modes in NBA and NFL as well). Along with what looks to be a revamped Franchise mode I’m actually somewhat optimistic.
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
Is it just for wii and ps3?
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
Oh, nevermind. I thought you were talking about the show. I was pretty sure that was only out for the ps3.
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
I thought it was just for 360, but apparently Wii as well. The Show is on PS3 and it’s a vastly superior game from what I heard.
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
The Show
is such an awesome game it has great controls not like 2k10 feels like im steering a tank in the outfield
Erihury - March 3, 2010
Ya'll are getting out of hand with this.
Next thing somebody will say that hes gonna win the Heyward Award this year too.
bwellnjonesco - March 3, 2010
He’s already won it for life!
dunnytwogloves - March 3, 2010
Twitter accounts added
FYI, I’ve updated the Choposphere links on the left side of the front page of the site to include all the Braves player/prospects I know of who are on twitter. I’ll try to keep that updated as more come on board.

on the username there, great show
bravesguy311 - March 3, 2010
what’d you think of the new album?
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
I like it, a few clunkers in there, but they are doing what got them to where they are, which i like. BUT, if you listen to “this addiction” the bridge is exactly the same as the bridge in “goodbye forever” I mean exactly the same. same note, everything. Take a listen…
But I love em, so its all good
What you think Beard?
bravesguy311 - March 3, 2010
I’ll have to listen to that. The intro for “Dead On The Floor” sounds exactly like one of the songs off their S/T whose name I can’t recall at the moment.
I agree with your view on the album. All of Dan’s songs are great, but most of Matt’s are pretty poor other than “Lead Poisoning”.
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
good call
“trucks and trains” perhaps?
bravesguy311 - March 3, 2010
“Southern Rock”
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
my man
bravesguy311 - March 3, 2010
hoping to catch this on MLB.TV today in between some of my windows on my work computer. :-)
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
It’d be nice if the MLB audio was working today…
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
I agree
It didn’t work yesterday and that was a let down. I’m hoping it was just first day bugs on the iPhone app.
dunnytwogloves - March 3, 2010
Looks like it might be working today. It says it’s playing, but no sound…hopefully it’ll kick on at 1pm.
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
I need a link for today!
Scott Coleman - March 3, 2010 via mobile
So is this one supposed to be on MLB Network, or just MLB TB
sddbaker - March 3, 2010
TV ..... plus I forgot the ?
sddbaker - March 3, 2010
nope, MLBN is showing the Yanks/Pirates.
But they just did a thing on Heyward, and Al Leiter said he was impressed with Heyward’s ability with pitch selection, ie. laying off a curve/breaking pitch. I think the praise from the former players, especially pitchers, are the best
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
And Sean Casey has talked highly of Heyward the past two days. Breaking down his swing.
dunnytwogloves - March 3, 2010
Ya’ll should be careful with those streaming websites, I got a really bad virus from one of the links somebody posted yesterday
Bravely going forward - March 3, 2010
Hmmm….I almost exclusively use those links during the season, and I haven’t gotten a virus from one yet. stick.tv or channelsurfing.net and others like those are fairly solid.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
yeah, i’ve never had a problem in the past, either. the virus i got was apparently something relatively new that a lot of ppl i’ve talked to have run into lately. just thought i’d throw it out there.
Bravely going forward - March 3, 2010
Do you know which one, because if it was mine, i feel really bad and am really, really sorry
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
i honestly don’t remember, i’d try to find the website, but lord knows i don’t want to go through that crap again. either way, i was eventually able to get rid of it, so it’s no big deal. it was called “security” something, in case you run into it.
Bravely going forward - March 3, 2010
all i remember is I posted a link and it popped up with a warning on my mac. IIRC I did mention that. Usually if that does pop up its mentioned
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
yeah, i definately remember you saying that. i don’t think it was that one.
Bravely going forward - March 3, 2010
I don’t think it was that one either; I think that’s the one I (finally) used when I got home yesterday. Everything I try at work is getting blocked.
Lizziebeth - March 3, 2010
DOB Twitter
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Yay!
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
Well, I don’t see how that matters. JJ wouldn’t even make a AAA All-star team.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
So have the Braves officially given up on Medlen as a legitimate starter? I mean I initially thought yes, he’s just going to be long/situational relief, but it seems the longer he spent in the bigs, the better he adjusted.
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
We just don’t have a spot for him right now as a starter, and he’s too valuable to be in AAA.
bwellnjonesco - March 3, 2010
A fantastic situation to find ourselves in.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
For our current team, he defines perfection as a long relief/spot starter type.
bwellnjonesco - March 3, 2010
I’m hoping with this lineup we can muster more than 2 runs off of these pitchers.
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
I want to see Chipper, Glaus and Heyward all go deep.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
If Heyward hits a homerun, I can only imagine myself flying straight up and hitting my head on the ceiling.
bwellnjonesco - March 3, 2010
That is, if you can stay upright from the tremendous earthquake that will inevitably follow.
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
Link anyone?
HEYJUDE - March 3, 2010

Live streams for games
Hey guys i used this site all last season and i was able to watch the spring training game yesterday with
www.p2p4u.net
the quality can vary but it got me through a lot of nights last year having a terrible cable packeage
GameCockBrave - March 3, 2010
I thin p2p streams pose the most issue with viruses, so be warned
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
yup, that was the one
Bravely going forward - March 3, 2010
MLB.tv is not working for me. WTF?
Bobby Cocks - March 3, 2010
I just looked at mlb.com, and they only have the audio icon next to the game now…it did have the tv link too, but not anymore.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
the worst is, last year they at least did gameday for ST games. Not anymore
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Yeah, I was just looking for that too.
Didn’t they have free mlb.tv last year for Spring Training too?
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
That much i don’t remember
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Screw the free crap. I just paid $120 this morning just so I could watch these games.

eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010
haha. YES!
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
How did you find that? All I could find is the live boxscore. Thanks!
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Go to http://www.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/, and then click on the game at the top. It took me a while to find it because for some reason they don’t link to it off the home page like they usually do
eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010
Many thanks!
Cracker! - March 3, 2010
It’s not updating. Man I thought I found something
eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010

justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
The live boxscore isn’t even updating. This BLOWS!
I know it is only ST, but there are some fans out there who care about this stuff. Come on, MLB!
I wish every day that Roger Goodell was the MLB commissioner.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
has the game even started yet?
bwellnjonesco - March 3, 2010
Well, someone below was just talking about good D in the top of the 1st.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
GAMEDAY is up and running
eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010
Fantastic.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Yeah, bottom of 1st. Melky grounded out, Prado walked on 4 pitches.
Chipper hit into DP.
Bobby Cocks - March 3, 2010
? First time to use this
I just got a stick man batting, not live action. Is this right?
HEYJUDE - March 3, 2010
Welcome to my world…and yes. That’s all we get.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Crap,
I was hoping for a magic button I could push, and get live action! lol
HEYJUDE - March 3, 2010
Exactly. WTF is this all about.
Bobby Cocks - March 3, 2010
Great defense in that first inning! So thats what range in RF looks like, haha.
bbxxj - March 3, 2010
Are you watching?
Bobby Cocks - March 3, 2010
SNY dropped the video feed.
scstrato - March 3, 2010
I know! WTF!
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Nope, just going on the radio feed descriptions. They both sounded like that first ball hit woudl be trouble but low and behold the Heymaker got there. Then he charged shallow line drive for the second out.
bbxxj - March 3, 2010
OF D isn’t important – it isn’t on the scoreboard.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Judging by the little dots on the gameday screen, the were nice plays, especially the second grab
eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010
So what’s up with the Mets not playing any of their starters …for the 2nd day in a row?
scstrato - March 3, 2010
They’re scared a line drive hit by Jason Heyward might carry one of their players to Cuba.
Scott Coleman - March 3, 2010 via mobile
the weather held em back yest. Manual pulled 5 starters after the rain
bravesguy311 - March 3, 2010
Gameday
finally updates
Erihury - March 3, 2010
c'mon Chipper
scstrato - March 3, 2010
WTF
Chipper – 1 pitch, GiDP
scstrato - March 3, 2010
it’s 2010, not 2009!
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
He should have listened to Boog!
scstrato - March 3, 2010
Chip
GIDP on the first pitch, ugh
maybe he shouldve listened to boog after all
atl192485 - March 3, 2010
sucks that the MLB.TV isn’t working anymore…it’s like I paid for nothing! :-)
At least I can listen to the game.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Sorry, not that it’s not working anymore but not carried for this game…
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
The audio should still be g2g.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Heyward with a nice catch to start off the top of the 2nd…hope he didn’t hurt himself when he slipped in the outfield.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Sounds like Huddy’s getting rocked. Thank goodness for Jesus Heyward in RF.
Bobby Cocks - March 3, 2010
It seems like gameday is updating all at once after every half inning.
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
it’s very annoying. Really, it would kill them?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
yeah it’s sort of disappointing
eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010
DP by Barajas to end the top of the 2nd.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
ugh
im guessing we dont have video even though it claims to show every ST game?
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
You’re right, no Video. Only Audio today unfortunately.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Not every ST game
Only 150 ST games. What they end up doing is showing 7 or 8 games a day near the end of spring training to make their “number”.
scstrato - March 3, 2010
They said that Heyward has made put outs on 3 of the first 6 batters of the game…guess the wind is blowing out to Right.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
i wonder
if Cox would bat Heyward 5th Escobar 6th then McCann 7th
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
intresting… Although I think Heyward needs some time before that happens
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
switch heyward and mccann ;)
JasonHeywardisGod - March 3, 2010
i mean
thats where we all assumed thats where he would hit but i was just asking out of curiousity
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
I don’t think he would do that…and I think that McCann is suited just fine to bat 5th personally. Now I think Heyward should be 7th and then whoever is playing left should bat 8th. That’s my opinion.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
How ’bout on days that Ross is playing and McCann is getting a rest?
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
If McCann is sitting then Heyward should definitely bat 5th.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Would be a good way to work him into a prominent spot in the order without having to carry those pressures every game.
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
its not a question of if McCann would be good in the 5th spot
its just a thought of a consistent top half of the lineup with McCann sitting out more than most players because he’s the catcher.
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
I've long been of the opinion of...
dropping McCann in the order. Not because of his bat, but if we have other quality options, his position of C makes me want him lower.
Mr. Sanchez - March 3, 2010
Heywards up
scstrato - March 3, 2010
Heyward is batting now…took a breaking ball for strike one then a ball.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Everyone quiet!
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
hahahahah!
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Heyward Walks on 5 pitches.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
They are scurred.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
After that Scud Missile he hit yesterday, wouldn’t you be?
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
Touche’
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
So what do we have so far, 3 or 4 first pitch outs between the two teams?
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
working the count
3-1
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
he WALKS
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
HUZZAH!
J-Freak - March 3, 2010
It’s amazing he’s reached base 4 out of 4 times so far in Spring training…amazing.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
What's more amazing
The kid has barely seen a strike in all 4 PA’s. The one he did see damn near decapitated the Mets 1B
scstrato - March 3, 2010
The MLB is gonna be easy for him, gonna be just like High School..
bwellnjonesco - March 3, 2010
Sporting a 1.000 OBP so far. Nice.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
with a 1.000 SLG for an OPS of 2.000
atl192485 - March 3, 2010
I'm really confused...
I didn’t think RF’s were allowed to walk. Is this some new spring training rule?
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
we’re trying to buck the trend…for a change.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
What’s a walk?
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
I think it's that thing
they do when they go back to the dugout when they’re out? I’m just having to guess though, i have no idea…
J-Freak - March 3, 2010
Haha…maybe Heyward could teach Chipper and boys a thing or two about not first pitch swinging.
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
God this is so awesome
We might actually see an opposing pitcher reach a 90-95 pitch count before the 8th inning this year with Heyward in for Frenchy
Sid Bream's Moustache - March 3, 2010
Ya know, I think that has been our biggest problem over the past couple of years – everyone was hacking. How many CGs were thrown against us vs how many we have thrown?
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
3-0 to Escobar…he’s afraid Heyward is going to pull a Damon on him and steal 2 bases!
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Heyward doesn’t steal bases. They are given to him as offerings
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010

JasonHeywardisGod - March 3, 2010

royhobbs - March 3, 2010
actually
i dont want Escobar hitting 6th. All these groundballs. that was almost a DP
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Would you put him 7th?
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
He’s too valuable to not be 6th. Someone pull up his RISP/RISP 2 outs numbers. Its ST, don’t worry about him
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
He’s always been notorious for ground-balls though.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
I know, but I’m reluctant to not give him those opportunities. Wasn’t he best in the majors with RISP?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
That isn’t a skill though.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
what isn’t?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Situational hitting.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Why isn’t it a skill? it so is completly
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
I don’t buy that people for some reason hit better in certain situations than in others. Maybe they have a lack of focus in non-situational ABs, but that isn’t really a different skill – it is a different mind-set.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
different mindset translating into different numbers, making it a skill to be able to have that mindset
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Or just a lack of focus during the other times…
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
I would respectfully disagree with you on that.
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
but not about his GB’s though. That is why I didn’t like him batting in the two hole.
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
eh
he hit into too many DP’s for me
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Here are his RISP<2 out numbers:
.331 .415 .491 .906
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
That doesn’t just happen by accident.
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
even still though
when we have 1 out he hits a GB
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
But it isn’t too far off from his career numbers of .301 .375 .426 .801
I think perhaps that the simple fact that he is a good hitter affects the pitchers in those situations more than Esco himself. I may be grasping for straws with that argument…
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
really? go back and look. everything jumps at least 20 points
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Maybe it is a skill, maybe it isn't
we cannot be certain of the future. Escobar may end up with significantly better numbers with RISP than without over his whole career. Not likely, because nobody with a long career has been that significantly better with RISP over his whole career (20% is about the max), but he could always be the exception that proves the rule.
cavebird - March 3, 2010
Lets hope
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
UGh….mlb gameday still shows Glaus batting.
What did Glaus do, btw?
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Dusted the plate off for Heyward
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
What did Esco do, also? Can we get an official updater?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
flyout to right
atl192485 - March 3, 2010
Dude’s throwing 80 and all we can muster are a few ground outs.
Bobby Cocks - March 3, 2010
Billy Wagner, Troy Gluas need to stay healthy and produce for Atlanta in 2010
no shit, Sherlock
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
I was watching MLB Network the other day and Harold Reynolds said that Brian McCann and Chipper Jones have to have good years for the Braves to do well. That was his analysis.
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
In other news, the future success of the New Orleans Saints rests on Drew Brees’ shoulders.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
You don’t think Chase Daniel will fill in well?
AllSaintsDay - March 3, 2010
Chase will probably have fewer than 10 games as a starting QB in his career.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
MIZZOU BABY!
Chase Daniel was a badass QB
Scott Coleman - March 3, 2010
Quick! Name the last Big XII QB to be successful in the NFL.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
i know i know...
the Big12 doesn’t put out much at all in terms of NFL talent…except Wide Recievers.
Scott Coleman - March 3, 2010
Vince Young
maybe
Erihury - March 3, 2010
Vince Young
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Fail.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
why? he had a very successful year this year
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Chris Johnson. ’Nuff said.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Not really
So are we going to call Marc Bulger a success because of Steven Jackson? Try again.
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
No. Because neither of them should be called a success.
Also, Steven Jackson 2009 was not Chris Johnson 2009. CJ turned in one of the best RB performances in NFL history. Teams simply didn’t care about VY or his ability to throw the ball. They worried about CJ.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
yeah, and Jackson had arguably the 2nd best year this past year. Plus he was the only weapon, so he was all that was focused on.
Either way, Jackson was a total success
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
He was on my fantasy teams, and I am very aware of how good he was this past season. Having said that, he was no where close to what Chris Johnson was. Keep in mind, that all of this praise for CJ is coming from a die-hard Jags fan…
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
I know that, I just think you’re underestimating Jackson a little.
Keep in mind this is coming from a one time Ram fan, so you probably aren’t
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Not at all. He had a very good season, but it was nothing like the season that Chris Johnson had.
Jackson got fewer carries, because the Rams D would let games get out of hand early, while the Titans D could keep games close and allow CJ to stay involved.
Jackson’s numbers are also a bit inflated due to his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
aren’t we talking run only? so where do catches come into play?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
We aren’t talking anything specific. We were talking about who was the better RB last season, which somehow evolved out of my challenge to you to name the last Big XII QB to be successful in the NFL. VY does not count. There is not a single team out there that actually WANTS VY as its starter – with the possible exception of Oakland.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Fail
The Rams would have him
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
I highly doubt that.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
why not? Bluger is washed up and old. They need a new QB. If they were to trade tomorrow then they wouldn’t have to think twice about drafting Suh. Plus I’d have VY over McCoy or any 2nd rounder if I were them
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Why not? Because VY would not be an upgrade over Bulger. The only thing that VY has on him is youth and legs.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
2 things Bluger doesn't have
so now they can wait a year and get a QB next year. What, should they get Vick?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Vick is far and away better than VY.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
I think VY is potentially “better than what they have now.” But that’s a far cry from “what we want.”
AllSaintsDay - March 3, 2010
I still would say that if VY is the best success you have to offer, the point is close to proved.
AllSaintsDay - March 3, 2010
This.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Yea
the Big XII suck with QBs spread offense kills QBs the cant make the transition to the NFL. VY is the most successful one
Erihury - March 3, 2010
Which indicates the sad state of affairs that Big XII QBs find themselves in…
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Yea
maybe Mccoy or Bradford will break the trend
Erihury - March 3, 2010
58.7%, 10TD/7INT, 7.3 YPA is “very successful”?
AllSaintsDay - March 3, 2010
in the second half of the season, he was at least above average. He had that gamewinning drive and turned them into one of, if not the, hottest team by the end of the year
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Yeah. I’m not saying he did horribly. But “at least above average in the second half” is below the threshold for what I’d call “very successful.”
AllSaintsDay - March 3, 2010
False again. Chris Johnson did that. Look at CJ’s stats and carries/game in relation to their W/L.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Isnt
wins what matters look at saints 08 Drew almost passed for the record passing yards but the team wasn’t successful
Erihury - March 3, 2010
Then they went out and got a defense and had their excellent draft picks grow into their roles. The Saints have been building this Super Bowl team for a few years now.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
thats what im saying tho
last year the Titans had a good D this year they really didn’t show up to many injuries they could have made the playoffs with a decent D
Erihury - March 3, 2010
Seneca Wallace
Best back up QB ever!
vooodooo - March 3, 2010
Yup.
Smoltz's Beard - March 3, 2010
Sorry
My boss walked into my cube and I had to take my headphones off…trying to catch up now.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Is gameday just being retarded or are we really all hitting the first pitch every time. Gameday says that misch has thrown only 13 pitches.
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
There’s a bad case of that going around today, Huddy got their first three batters on three pitches too.
J-Freak - March 3, 2010
Moylan in to pitch now. Castalanotto grounded out to Escobar in the top of the 3rd.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
apparently
Glaus just made a great play at 1st
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
On a foul ball. :-)
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
still
good play lol
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Base hit for Adams to right…runner on first with one out.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
I’m giving up on gameplay…I can find everything out here like a half hour ahead of time.
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
Definitely
eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010
I’ll try to keep you all updated for as long as I can listen…I have a meeting at 3 PM so I have some free time until then
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Sweet, thanks!
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
Glaus with a play on a ground ball and toss to Moylan to get the out. Runner on 2nd now with 2 outs.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Ground out for Pagan to end the inning…I think it went to Glaus with a flip to Moylan again.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Clevlen up now…whoever was up before him grounded out for the first out. Misch is still pitching.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
who is clevland
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Ross grounded out, sorry.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Last pitch from Misch was only 81 MPH…I could hit that!
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Although he just through a FB at 88 MPH (it was a ball though)
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Is he a junk ball pitcher?
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
Location, location, location.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Clevlen with a line drive hit to CF. Runner on 1st with 1 out. Melky up next.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Cabrera grounds into a DP…end of 3rd.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
There’s a good chance you should get video back at 2. My TV listing for SNY says the game starts at 2, so you might get video then
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Melky GIDP
Fail
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Wow, batters must really be behind in ST
pancanbra - March 3, 2010
They say that the batters...
…usually are behind the pitchers at the start of spring training. I don’t think this is anything shocking. This also explains why Heyward is doing so well; while hitters are behind the pitchers right now, this does not apply to deities.
cavebird - March 3, 2010
Atleast
we dont have to watch us fail at batting
Erihury - March 3, 2010
Trucker calling in to XM's MLB channel just now:
Caller: “Hey, it’s like the first day of REAL BASEBALL!” (really excited)
Kevin Kennedy: “Oh, so the Mets yesterday don’t count?”
Caller: “No, I mean Major League baseball!”
carpengui - March 3, 2010
Classic.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Is it the Top of the 4th coming up.
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
Yep – with EOF facing Cora, Murphy, and Tatis.
carpengui - March 3, 2010
Cora singled, thrown out by Ross trying to steal.
Murphy and Tatis both strike out on six pitches. Three called. Three swinging – in that order(?!).
carpengui - March 3, 2010
try you’re video feed again. It might work
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Can’t — work restrictions — all I have is the alleged live feed from mlb.com
carpengui - March 3, 2010
what makes me mad about this game
is that they apparently have velocity. that would have been nice yesterday
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
So I just read that Megan Fox says that she has only slept with 2 men – her highschool sweet-heart and her current bf…I call BS on that.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
HAHA
oh god that made me laugh so loud thats total BS
Erihury - March 3, 2010
Yeah...
Why wouldn’t she want to tell everyone about me????
I Saw Buzz Beaned - March 3, 2010
In more baseball-related news, Nolan Ryan has predicted that the Rangers will win 92 games…I think he may be right. They have a really good team this year.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
I’ll take the under, but not by much. around 87. Their pitching, I just don’t have enough confidence in it
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
I agree with this. And watch out for Seattle. That division is going to be a lot of fun to watch
eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010
I think the Angels will be a huge disappointment. I just don’t see them putting it together, and I think their rotation is vastly overrated.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
The Angels may finish last.
They lost a lot for last year’s team and the guys they got to replace them just don’t seem that good to me.
cavebird - March 3, 2010
Chip Walks
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Dammit, got a call. Glaus is up now with Chipper on first.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
not sure
cant remember
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
What did EOF do?
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
Looks like he got 2Ks on 6 pitches.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Cool
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
Glaus lines out hard to 3B.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
alright, I have work to do. I’m out. See everyone later
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Glaus
lines out hard to 3B
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Heyward is up again.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
1-1 to Heyward
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
How are they pitching him?
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
well
mitsch was pitching him in then out
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Stand by
for lift off
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
Fouls off a 1-1 Breaking ball and 3B catches the foul pop.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
They finally got him out
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
I don't believe you.
Heyward doesn’t make outs.
cavebird - March 3, 2010
Okay, I'm going to see what happens here and then go do work.
Really, I swear…
AllSaintsDay - March 3, 2010
Did Glaus line out hard to 3B?
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
yea
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
whats the score??
bravesfan1047 - March 3, 2010
0-0
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
no score
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
0-0
eaheckman10 - March 3, 2010
Mariano Gomez pitching now.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Mariano Gomez
in to pitch
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Freeman in for Glaus at 1st
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
thurston in for chipper at 3B
atl192485 - March 3, 2010
Barajas singles to left.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Pass ball by Ross…Barajas moves to 2nd.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Just to recap, we only have 1 hit, right?
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Lol ya. By Clevland or whatever his name is.
Scott Coleman - March 3, 2010 via mobile
I want at least 3ABs for Heyward today
Scott Coleman - March 3, 2010 via mobile
I think he might get 3 hits…but then again Cox might pull him.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Thanks for the updates Dave
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
This
HEYJUDE - March 3, 2010
No worries
The least I could do…since I can’t be there to take pics.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Prado boots ground ball into RJ and runner reaches…runners on 1st and 3rd now.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Ooh, they ruled it a hit, athough the announcers are ruling it an E4.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
So
Gomez is going down. Mets almost score
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
bases loaded
one out
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Freeman
throws out runner at home
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Sorry, bases were loaded (I guess I missed something). Ground ball to Freeman, he comes home and gets the force but they didn’t get the DP.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Come on Gomez
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
Pagan gets a hit to LF just pass Escobar and a run scores from 3rd…bases are still loaded.
Mets runner from 2B trips over 3B and falls flat on his face.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
lolMets
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Don't they know not to drink and run by now...
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
Mets
injuries already. 2 Mets injured getting on the bus over here.
Adams just tripped over 3B
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Mets 1 - Braves 0
Ground out to Gomez, force at first, end of half inning.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
hey everyone, just joined in
can i get a one sentence recap of the game so far?
alligatorimpersonator - March 3, 2010
1 pitch.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Braves bats quiet, pitching pretty good, Mets just scored to make it 1-0
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Going to bottom of 5th, 1-0 Mets. Atlanta has one hit. Heyward 0-1 with a walk and pop foul-out.
carpengui - March 3, 2010
Heyward made good plays in RF to keep Hudson’s appearance scoreless, but after Gomez had problems pitching.
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Boring!
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
ya know
i would like to practice plate discipline throughout the entire lineup. Not just Heyward
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Hahaha
That’s the second best joke of the day, after “Heyward doesn’t steal bases. They are given to him as offerings” from earlier.
Shark Judge - March 3, 2010
why thank you
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Escobar
swings at 1st pitch. Grounds out on 2nd pitch.
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Ok thanks
Heyward with another walk, that’s what I like to hear
alligatorimpersonator - March 3, 2010
I’d rather hear double, triple, homer. Although walks are nice.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Personally, I don’t want any rally-killers, like HRs, in his boxscore.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
In that case, I would love to kill a rally 20+ times this season.
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
Ted Williams has the record for most walks by a rookie at 107...
could Heyward challenge that mark?
Mr. Sanchez - March 3, 2010
I hope so. He has 3 in 2 ST games so far, and his minor league track record certainly gives us hope!
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Great stat!
I Saw Buzz Beaned - March 3, 2010
Diaz up now.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Diaz rips a single up the middle.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Ross up now, 1 out and Diaz on first.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Flashback to 2009…
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Pops out to RF.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
I know it's the 2nd game of ST but
we are looking terrible against the Mets AAA team.
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
indeed
have yet to face any of Santana, Maine, Pelfrey, or Perez
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Well, I’ll give you Santana…the rest are arguably AAA talent.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
wow. twice in one day. You really love that comment
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Well, this one was more serious than my last sarcastic one…I really do believe that those 3 guys would not be in the rotation of a large portion of MLB teams.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
maybe. I like Maine. If he was somewhere like St. Louis, you know, with a pitching coach, he could probably be an above average starter. The others are AAA
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Maine may need some coaching help. He certainly LOOKS to have the stuff, just not control. Either way, he hasn’t been very good so far.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
true, the only way we differ is that I wouldn’t call him AAA talent
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
I just like to criticize the Mets’ rotation as much as I can.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
well thats not fair
its beating a dead horse :)
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
low-hanging fruit!
carpengui - March 3, 2010
fine
AAAA
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Well, it is just the 2nd game of ST. The Mets aren’t exactly tearing the cover off the ball either…
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
true
the offense definitely takes more time to get into swing
alligatorimpersonator - March 3, 2010
too bad
its not their regulars that we have seen yet
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
+1
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
Glaus and some other guys have been hitting the ball hard, its just not falling right.
bbxxj - March 3, 2010
how does Glaus look on the field so far?
alligatorimpersonator - March 3, 2010
Story of last season
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
Brent Clevlen up now (DHing today)
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Clevlen with a deep drive to the outfield, but caught on the warning track.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
more warning track power – just what we need!
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Clevland
hits it to the warning track. but out
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
did Matt advance to 2nd or is he still on 1st?
bravesfan1047 - March 3, 2010
didnt matter
was 3rd out
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
ah, i thought that was just the second
bravesfan1047 - March 3, 2010
We have like 6 hits in 2 games
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
3rd out of inning.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Stephen Marek is in to pitch now…Daniel Murphy leads off.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Unless he's improved his control the Mets will score here too
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
Mets 2 - Braves 0
Murphy scores on a single to center.
Mets have 8 hits now.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
welp
Apparently the only people that can pitch are the onese we already know are in our bullpen.
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
We haven’t seen Heyward on the mound yet, so this isn’t entirely a true statement…
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Oh crap...Mets 3 - Braves 0
A gapper and a triple by Martinez.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
Mets 4 - Braves 0
Thole up now, single to CF and another run scores.
come on Marek…
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
I know it's early, but,
Geez, we can’t beat the Mutts AAA players, frustrating.
HEYJUDE - March 3, 2010
We have quite a few AA players in though..
bwellnjonesco - March 3, 2010
not when you can’t see/hear it.
But seriously, its game 2 of spring training. Cut them some slack. If we’re like this next week, then we can freak out. Not yet
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
not sure i’d even worry next week
Bravely going forward - March 3, 2010
I would, just a little. If all we could do was manage a couple hits and walks by Heyward. I’m not saying we have to have HRs every at bat next week, but if we can’t at least get good cuts and a couple hits, I’d worry a little
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
a little
Bravely going forward - March 3, 2010
Save the worrying for April 6th.
Mountngrown - March 3, 2010
So I think Marek will probably be dropped off of the 40-man…and hopefully, Mitch Jones can be put on it!
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
+Infinity
Should’ve kept Brandon Jones!
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
Agreed.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
err
i dunno that you want that after seeing that swing yesterday
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Oh geeze
None of these guys have played competitive baseball in 5 months. Give em a little time.
Scott Coleman - March 3, 2010 via mobile
they have been swinging a bat though
His swing was atrocious
drumzalicious - March 3, 2010
Including the Mets &&& as well right but they're still hitting the ball
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
This
HEYJUDE - March 3, 2010
that’s because they’re all playing for jobs. If you look at it, the ones who aren’t hitting for us are the ones who know they have a job
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Um......what?!?!
They still haven’t been playing for months so reguardless if they are playing for jobs it shouldn’t make a difference.
Jay212033 - March 3, 2010
meaning while someone like Esco probably doesnt care what goes on, and isn’t gonna try hard the average met will
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
FIRE FRANK WREN!

Zeus12888 - March 3, 2010
I want to see more of Young this spring.
He had a hard liner to 3B and a walk yesterday, he’s been improving with his bat and defense every year.

justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Worst draft pick since FYF
Erihury - March 3, 2010
Huh? I thought nobody could be as good as the latter person mentioned in that sentence. So how could he be a bad draft pick?!?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
I really hope MLB puts the highlights of this game up like they did with yesterdays.
Scott Coleman - March 3, 2010
I don’t know if anyone is filming the game…
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Word
Chipfan04 - March 3, 2010
ESPN had the highlights on BBTN yesterday afternoon.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Anyone have an update on the game?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
9-5 Atl
Marek was bad. Heyward was good. Minor was perfect in 1 inning. Hicks hit a 2-run, rally killing HR. The Mets are really, really bad.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Really, really bad?
Based on their AAA team losing 9-5?
DPerrone99 - March 3, 2010
No. Based on their inability to field, mental mistakes and general lack of quality starting pitching.
Also, if you really want to be an ass, you should recognize that their AAA team lost 9-5 to our AA team.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
How is that true?
The entire Braves starting lineup today will likely make the opening day roster (with most of them starting), and 3 pitchers that pitched should also be there. The Mets played 2 starters, 3 bench players, and no pitchers who are likely to be on the opening day roster. The game was really decided by a bunch of lousy pitchers having rough outings, so there really isn’t much to take away from the result for either side (besides a few young kids having nice days).
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
Umm, because we scored 9 runs with our AA roster. Wasn’t that obvious?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Atlanta Hits – Thurston, Heyward, Escobar, Hicks, Diaz, Boscan, Clevlen
Atlanta RBI – Thurston, Freeman, Escobar, Hicks
Atlanta Runs – Cabrera, Prado, Blanco, Conrad, Freman, Heyward, Young, Hicks, Clevlen
That is how our AA team beat your AAA team.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Well most of those hits came off of Kunz and Stinson.
The Mets are planning on starting Kunz in either St. Lucie or Binghamton this year, Stinson just reached St. Lucie in late July of last year. The majority of the guys in the game when the Mets gave up those runs played the majority of the year in St. Lucie or Binghamton last year. I don’t see how that constitutes beating the Mets AAA team.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
At best they were beating up on a bunch of AA players.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
DePerron made that assumption, I just went along with it.
Either way, your team is in bad shape this year.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
It's tough to make any sort of conclusion about them yet.
It’s basically the same team that missed the playoffs by one game in 2008 (Delgado for Bay, Barajas for Schnieder, new bullpen except for Feliciano), so if they stay healthy they should easily be a contender. If they have injury issues like last year, they’ll be out of the race by July. Most of the projection systems have a tough time with them due to the time lost last year for such a large amount of their team. They have quite a bit of wiggle room financially as well, so I’d guess they will be able to take advantage of some salary dumps midseason if they need to.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
yeah, but now home is Citi Field, so it doesn’t matter- you guy’s aren’t going to generate offense
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
It's basically the same park as Shea.
Citifield ranked 22nd in runs accoring to park factor in 2009…Shea was 21st in 2008 and 23rd in 2007 (and dead last in 2006). The dimensions are almost identical between the two. The Mets have always played in pitchers parks, and it’s not like the opposition doesn’t have to play in the same field.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
The MSM makes too big of a deal about Citi because the Mets didn't hit HR's there.
When guys like Santos, Berroa, Castillo, Jeremy Reed, Angel Pagan, and Dan Murphy make up most of your lineup it’s not really the parks fault. They actually hit more HR’s at home than away last year.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
um no. Just look at the difference in distances, plus Citi plays like a pitchers park anyway, Shea played like a hitters park. Plus with the weird walls and everything. Didn’t you read the editorial a while back criticizing spending money on FA’s to try and generate more HRs instead of using that money to move the walls in? geez…
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Shea was not a hitters park at all, did you even look at any data before coming to that conclusion?
You should check out the numbers from Baseball Reference or ESPN before you say that. According to both sets of data Shea was one of the better pitchers parks in the majors. According to how the parks actually played, they were both pitcher friendly to very similar degrees.
The park really doesn’t matter though in context to the 2010 Mets, as both they and their opponents have to deal with the same park.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
numbers, please. No, I don’t care for numbers, because I’ve been to enough games at Shea that frankly, those numbers lie. Especially with the wind from the water almost always carrying the ball out. Forget that. It really isn’t the same team that missed the playoffs by 1 game, because then you guys had an effective starting rotation. Johan actually scared me. Now, frankly, Johan doesn’t, Ollie can’t pitch to save his life, Maine still needs a pitching coach, and I couldn’t tell you for the life of me who the other two pitchers are.
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
I don't know how to argue against the "Those numbers are just wrong, I've been to games there argument"
But to answer your question about the rotation, it was Pelfrey and Pedro (who had a 5.61 ERA) in the last two spots. It really wasn’t a very good rotation, they just had a very good offense.
Here’s a non numerically based report on Shea. Here.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
you can’t really, but to be fair I never said they were wrong, they just don’t account for the whole picture.
This year (2010) I think the Mets don’t have that much of an offense (please, Bay isn’t the answer) and virtually no pitching. Go through it. Half of the team is coming off injury, the center to your offense (Beltran) isn’t even back. Plus, although I’m no expert, but I don’t think your fielding is that great either. I don’t think its too early to make conclusions about the Mets. Tops, you guys have a win pct of .475, maybe .500 if you get lucky.
(please, please, please, please, please don’t say Wright is the centerpiece of your offense. he isn’t.)
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Frenchy will save them…..
Chief Noc-A-Homa - March 3, 2010
Just using their UZR/150 numbers for the last three years (or in Murphy's case 1 season), they come out as exactly 10 runs above the average team.
Plus/Minus would tell us that they were 38 runs above average in that same time period. The defense isn’t out of this world, but they won’t be terrible.
The offense won’t be bad either. Reyes is leading off, Castilo and his .387 OBP are in the 2 hole, and the 3/4/5 hitters all had wOBA’s over .380 last year. The Murphy/Francoeur/Barajas trio sucks (although Murph isn’t awful), but the top half of the order matches up with just about anyone once Beltran gets back. Pagan had a .358 wOBA last year, so he’s at least an adequate fill in (Beltran is expected back in late April/early May).
The pitching is the huge question mark. If the Mets get anywhere near 2008 levels of production out of them (4 of the 5 starters are the same) they should be fine. Only 2 guys had a sub 4 era that season, so it’s not like anyone is asking them to turn into the Braves rotation.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
Those defensive numbers are just their projected starters
I didn’t want to bother with the bench players since I’m not 100% sure who those will be.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
Okay, so defense is fair.
But Reyes isn’t leading off, or so is the word. Plus, once Beltran gets back you could be fighting to stay out of the cellar. One black hole is enough to bring down a team. Two? Killer (see Anderson, Garret and Francoeur, Jeff in one lineup). Having those three can negate anything done by the rest of the lineup.
How about we leave the pitching aside?
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Fair enough on the pitching...projecting any of tham other than Johan would be an exercise in futility anyway.
Jerry is claiming he’s going to toy with hitting reyes third, but I really don’t put any stock in it. He claimed that he was going to do that last year as well, and nothing ever came of it. Even if Pagan ends up leading off, He hit for a .350 OBP last year with double digit steals as a part timer. He’s a capable leadoff man for a month.
As far as the Beltran injury goes, It may very well end up being a blessing in disguise. The injury is going to assure Angel Pagan gets regular playing time for the first month (he was worth 2.8 WAR last year in under 400 PA’s). If Francoeur struggles for the first month and Pagan continues to impress, I could see Francoeur losing his job when Beltran returns. There really isn’t another position on the roster where the Mets could offer the kind of quality depth they have in center field (Fernando Martinez will be waiting in AAA as well). It was only arthroscopic surgery, so it really doesn’t look like anything that should be an issue going forward. If Francoeur is hot for the first month, then the Mets find themselves in a good situation as far as outfield depth goes.
As far as the black holes go, Barajas is going to generally be one. Francoeur and Murphy may or may not be, it’s hard to say at this point. If Francoeur is, I’m sure he’ll be sitting since Jerry is on the hot seat already. Either way it’s hard to compare the lineup to last years Braves because when Francoeur was dragging down the lineup it really wasn’t a very strong 1-5 they were running out there. Escobar struggled for the 1st half, McClouth wasn’t there for most of that time, and Kotchman was pretty bad. Prado also didn’t establish himself as a regular until midseason. The Braves offense in general picked up in the 2nd half, and LaRoche and McClouthdidn’’t hurt.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
I should make this clear...I don't think the Mets have a realistic shot at the division this year
I have a feeling Philly will run away with it unless they get hit with some key injuries. I just don’t think they should be counted out of the wild card hunt yet either. With relatively good health they ought to be fairly close at the trade deadline and they certainly have enough in the farm system to go after another impact player (and may be one of the few that doesn’t have to worry about salary).
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
Again I disagree, French is almost a lock to be a black hole. I’m sorry. Turkey Underwear or not, he’s a black hole. It was on the scoreboard when I went last year at one point (no joke. there was a black hole over his name).
There’s nothing in your minor league, thats a known fact. I haven’t seen anybody talk highly of it in a while.
Plus look at the NL: fighting for the WC is: Braves, Marlins, Phillies, Cardinals, Cubs, Brewers, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Giants, Rockies. Take out 3 as division leaders thats still 7 teams better than the Mets. Plus who would they get at the deadline that could make them any better? They have sluggers…
I just don’t see the Mets doing anything for the next couple years until they get some sort of pitching staff
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
Without putting together another huge post, most publications have had the Mets farm system ranked as just about the middle of the pack.
Sickels had them at 13, Law had them at 16. They are also one of the few teams that won’t be losing any of the guys on their list to the opening day roster, so they should climb by mid-season.
As far as the Wild card hunt goes, I don’t really see any reason that the Mets can’t compete with teams like Milwaukee, Arizona, San Fran, Chicago, and Florida. All of those teams have major questions. On paper the Braves and Rockies both look better at his point, but that’s not really enough to say that they will perform to what their expectations are.
As to who’s available at the deadline, there will likely be just as many big names available this year as there were last year. Any pitcher, Catcher, or First Baseman that becomes available would likely be an upgrade.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
Yeah, they’ll climb, but like 2 spots tops. Not impressed. therefore, they really can’t get anyone at the deadline.
And no, I don’t see them passing most of those teams, here’s why. Almost all of those teams could stay at least on par with, if not outhit, the mets offense (except for maybe San Fran) and all could definitely outpitch the mets (except for maybe Milwaukee). So I could see them pass maybe one or two, not make a dent in the standings
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
I guess I don't understand how you don't feel they have enough to make a trade at the deadline if they need to.
They easily have more in the farm system to offer than Cleveland got in either the Lee deal or the Martinez deal last year, and they Could have easily beaten the Granderson deal, the Lee deal, or the Vazquez deal this winter. The only trade I can think of in the last year that they may not have been able to match was the Halladay deal (and I’d be inclined to think Martinez, Mejia, and Davis would have topped that package). They are also one of the few teams that won’t require other teams to eat salary. They may not have the best farm in baseball, but they have alot of good prospects that will be major league ready within a year or so, which tend to be the types of guys deals are centered around. Guys like Jason Heyward are great for making the farm system look good, but those types of guys just aren’t traded so it really doesn’t matter if the Mets have them as far as their ability to deal is concerned.
Stephen Schmidt - March 3, 2010
we could argue this forever. So why don’t we just stop?
I also don’t think the Mets are going to make a deadline deal, and Jerry and Omar will be fired sooner rather than later, but for another day, another time
GoBravesNY - March 3, 2010
He should scare you. Johan is still an excellent pitcher. Very ignorant to ignore the number. Shea was a pitcher friendly park. It would be stupid of them to waste money on moving the walls in. If Wright isn’t the centerpiece who is, Jeff?
FitzFan - March 3, 2010
Johan’s armor showed some kinks last season. He can still be very good, but he isn’t as scary as he used to be.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
Look, Johan is good, top 10; but not elite, so he doesn’t scare me, like say Hanson does, or will in 3 years.
Thats scared. Johan just doesn’t do that. He’s aging, has lost a little bit on his stuff, and frankly just can’t mow you down like Hanson could. He just doesn’t scare me when I look at him on paper.
Wright isn’t the centerpiece, either Beltran, or Reyes (is/are.. i’m too tired for grammar). The team collapses when Reyes can’t hit, and Beltran was the center of that lineup when they went 7 games with the Cards in the NLCS. If I had to choose one, I’d say Reyes

Again, whatever helps you feel content.
It was just a bit entertaining that with yesterday’s loss, the cry was that it’s only a spring training game and that all that matters was a solid performance from heyward.
today, however, a win, is (for some reason) a performance that predicts seasonal placement and condemns the mets to a dismal 2010. it was amusing enough to come back to this board and find post after post of analysis based on preseason.
I think it’s a mistake to write the Mets off.
DPerrone99 - March 4, 2010
I would have said the Mets were really, really bad whether they played today or not.
justincredubil02 - March 4, 2010
As I posted below
Whatever helps you sleep at night.
You’ve been taking the lowest possible outcome of the Mets offense and pitching, which is fine. All I’m saying is that there’s a decent chance that you’ll be disappointed.
If I didn’t know any better I would’ve assumed that the Braves had won the division these last four years.
DPerrone99 - March 4, 2010
If I didn’t know any better, i would think that the Mets had a decent rotation and a good offense, based on some of the posts that I have been reading.
justincredubil02 - March 4, 2010
Minor was perfect in his appearance. Good to see!
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010

Don’t worry, I’ll be at the Gwinnett Braves home games most nights doing their photography, so I won’t be watching many Atlanta Braves games unfortunately.
Dave_D - March 3, 2010
If I haven’t told you before……THAT’S SUCH A SWEET GIG!!!
I Saw Buzz Beaned - March 3, 2010

HEYJUDE - March 3, 2010
Lyman pitched the 9th.
justincredubil02 - March 3, 2010
We just put up 600+ comments
