Spring Training Open Thread: Nats at Braves

The Braves take on the Nats at Disney today. Manny Acosta was optioned to triple-A this morning, so we won't have to worry about that being back in the bullpen to start the season. Here is today's lineup:

Melky Cabrera, CF
Martin Prado, 2B
Chipper Jones, 3B
Brian McCann, C
Troy Glaus, 1B
Jason Heyward, RF
Omar Infante, SS
Matt Diaz, LF
Jair Jurrjens, P

Following Jurrjens will be the heart of the bullpen, Billy Wagner, Takashi Saito, Peter Moylan, and Eric O'Flaherty. Wagner, Saito, and Moylan are all pitching on back to back days, so this should be an interesting test for them.

Moylan and EOF pitched yesterday?

I don’t believe so. Just Wagner and Saito.

Yes on the backfield according to Carroll Rogers of the AJC

Oh that makes sense. Well it should be interesting then.

Acosta

Chavez is almost a lock to make the BP even with his terrible spring! I’d rather see Kimbrel with his wildness over Chavez throwing the ball 96 belt high down the middle of the freakin plate.

Well to be fair, JC did have a pretty bad ST last year too, so maybe he just doesn’t pitch well until the games mean something.

Medlen hasn't been pitching in 9 days

Is anything wrong with him? Or has he gotten minor league time like Moylan and EOF?

Minors. He threw 3 or 4 innings the other day according to DOB’s Twitter.

So they’re stretching him out a bit then.

Hopefully. He definately needs to get a good 5 or 6 inning outing in before opening day

Is there something wrong with Escobar?

I’ve noticed he hasn’t been in a game in a while. Maybe I"m wrong about that, but it seems he hasn’t been in one the past couple of days or so.

Back Pain

According to DOB

Anyone have the link to the game today?

Radio link:
http://www.broadcastradiostream.com/WFIS.asx

Thanks for the link – not on TV here in NC.

Not on TV anywhere, to my knowledge.
1-2-3 for JJ
Martin CS to end the 1st

We have JJ dealing-4 up, 4 down here in the second.

Former Braves Willie Harris batting.

Full count now

And walked him.

JJ Ks Bruntlett

2 Ks now.

Now Nieves down 0-2 as well

Nieves grounds out to 3rd, Harris left stranded at first.

That link doesn’t work.

Works for me

I wonder if it’s a black out thing, I am in Arizona.

I’m in NC, so I don’t think so.

works for me im in houston

Got it to finally work in windows media player. Thanks!

hmm…it’s working fine for me in Windows Media Player.

Mac is back up, swings at the first pitch, lead-off single.

Hitting over .500 on the Spring.

Wind is apparently blowing in today

Might not not be any homers.

Popped foul by Glaus

Glous grounds into the FC, should have been a DP but had a tricky hop.

Heyward up.

Another FC-Heyward hustles down to first to beat out the DP attempt. Infante up.

Heyward steals second.

1-0 to Infante now.

huh – Heyward seems to be doing okay this Spring. Probably would be a good bench filler.

Groundout deep into the hole. Desmond makes a great stop and a great throw to nail infante at first.

No score, end of 2.

Is there anyone even reading my play by play at this point? If there’s no point to it, I’m just talking to myself here.

yes...thanks in advance

I just back from buying a lawn mower… so you’ve got some company in the booth now!

yes!!!

thank you for it, big time!!!!

Nice glovework by Glaus, here. 1 out.

Marquis flies out to left

2 out. JJ still dealing.

I agree with the announcers: If there’s any significant improvement I wanna see this year, it’s punishing the Nats.

They are gonna be better this year — you don’t want them thinking they’re actually Good.

Yeah

And they’ll finally have a real ace come June.

How many hits for each team so far?

2 for the Braves

0 for the Nats.

Gone to 3-0 now.

Morgan Walks, Demond up.

Jurrjens K’s Desmond. 3 Ks now for JJ.

Bottom 3rd coming up.

Still no hits for the Nats.
Nice

Our starting 5 seems to be shaping up nicely.

The announcers are echoing that… 3:1 K-to-BB ratio.
On the offensive side, Team OB% is .390.
Team ERA is 2nd in the Major in Spring…. to the Phillies.

Who’s calling the game with Powell today? Is it Mike Morgan?

Diaz vs. Marquis; then JJ and Melky due up.

Diaz LACES it to the warning track, but Morgan tracks it down.

Web gem for Willie Harris in Right Center… Wind-dissed.

JJ not putting up much fight at the plate here.

Actually, 2-2 the count now on JJ

But he breaks his bat and taps it back to Marquis.

Melkey fouling off a couple of pitches here.

2-2 now the count.
Another foul ball from Melky

Why is the press box playing the Green Acres theme after Melky nails one into the stands?

Heeeey-O

Heeeey-O

…and that’s the dumbest thing I hear at ballparks! /rant.

I don't know

There’s a lot of dumb things at ballparks.

the nationals announcers...

are painfully misinformed announcers.

Melky Ks on a full count.

Minor worry-Marquis had walked 8 guys in 10 innings coming in, but no BBs today for the Braves. Not a lot of patience being shown.

Almost forgot...

Going to the 4th now, still no score.

Zimmerman up.

1-0.

JJ working quickly

Now 2-1 to Zimmerman.

Slick change-up, apparently

Outside corner, 2-2 now.

There goes the no-no. Zimmer knocks it between Chipper and Yunel.

Hit and Run

fouled off, though.

High, high fly ball up in center

Melky grabs it.

Hmmm…. Melky’s getting more playing time lately.

4-6-3. GIBP.

Braves just rolling along,

GIDP even

Going to the bottom of the 4th.

That was Harris on the GIDP btw.

Appreciate the details Bronn.
I’m trying to listen too – but not the best audio on this “netbook” I’m using.

Prado Chipper McCann due up now

Marquis working quickly.

1-2 the count on Prado.

Grounder to second

Prado retired.

Come on guys, Marquis isn’t this good.

Woohoo, found my glove

Wondered where it had gotten to in the last move.

1-2 the count to Chipper.

Did I mention he’s working quickly?

Now a full count to Chipper.

And now the BB

Chipper at first

Hey everyone,

How are we looking today?

NOt much offense so far — 3 hits total, no runs.

JJ is dealign

Braves aren’t hitting as well as they should.

Chipper walks, McCann up

2-1 now the count to McCann.

3-1 now
Filled up the count now

3-2 offering coming.

Popped out to short-Chipper had to hustle back as he was moving with the pitch.

BTW – Nats beating the Muts 4-1 in the 3rd.

Ignore this. I obviously went past a old game on MBLtv.
Geez I hate looking stooopid.

No, you were right

Nationals in a split squad game today.

Whew – that makes me feel a little bit better then.
Thanks Bronn. :-)

Yeah,

watching that game on MLBN. Nats making Muts look bad thus far, both teams have what appears to be their season line-up.
Nats look better than I’ve seen them.

Glaus gets a hold of one, line drive

Runners at the corners now.

Heard that one off the bat.

Glaus with a stinger!

JH up.

Heyward grounds to second-Bruntlett with the WebGem to get him.
inning over.

Very unfortunate I was hoping to celebrate RBIs for JH there.

Heyward got robbed.

Quick out by Bruntlett. Nieves up now.

Happens every time: guy makes a fantastic defensive play to to end the inning, leads off the next inning, and…is out quickly

Nieves hits a blooper that hangs up just long enough for Melky to come over to grab it in shallow right.

Right center

I should say.

The hitter is

Bernadina. Never heard of him before.

Sliding catch by Heyward!

Robbed Bernadina. Inning over.

J-Hey flashing leather.
Manny Acosta assigned to AAA Gwinnett today

I dunno how far behind I am on that, but this is the first I’ve heard of it. Roster now stands at 37, they say.

Infante, Diaz, Jurrjens due up now.

1-1 to Omar.

Line drive single for Infante.

He's gotta be hitting close to .400 on the Spring now.
Wish I coulda seen it.

Omar with a single.

Come on Caveman!

Lol

Had forgotten that nickname for him.

Fouled off by Diaz. He’s down 0-2

Foul Ball

lol

Actually, as I look at that — there’s a baseball bat flying into those seats!

Yeah, there sure is.

But still, love the crowd reaction.

Diaz chokes up, pulls a curveball through the hole. 2 men on, now.

JJ going to try to bunt with two men on, no outs.
EOF warming up in the pen.
Fouled off by JJ

Count now 1-2.

Still bunting

2-2 count as he takes.

Good bunt

Morse fields it at first, and JJ is out at first.

Melky up

Infante at third, Diaz at second, 1 out.

Does Melky have a nickname?

Anyone ever called him “The Melkman”? LOL

Yeah

I think we’ve gone there already. It might not stick.

Groundout by Melky.

RBI on the 4-3. Infante scores.

Yes! we score.
3-0 to Prado now

Chipper on deck.

And Prado walks.

Chipper up with runners at 1st and 3rd.

Chippers swings at the first pitch

looping liner to left, Bernadina fields it. 3 outs.

Don't know why Chipper swung at the first pitch

Marquis isn’t a good pitcher!

Heyjude…. my clock says 2:22

so does mine :)
Lol

the random details we know abut people here.

I hope this year – every time my clock says 2:22 in a day game we’re winning.

Eric O'Flaherty in.

5th inning.

6th, I should say.

JJ went 5 innings.

Conrad replacing Prado
Chipper out – Thurston in.

Interesting battle,

for the last bench spot. Conrad came into ST hot, but has come to a stand still of late. Thurston right the opposite.
This may come down to the wire.

Marquis grounds out to the pitcher. 1 out.

Nyjer Morgan up.

2-2 to Morgan now.

Hmm

Morgan thought he was struck out on that fastball, but Joe West disagrees.

Full count now.

1 ER over last 23 innings for Braves pitching.
WOW — is that what they said?

Can't be right

I think they were talking about starters. Wagner had some issues yesterday.

Likely – because our BP gave up a lead the other day for a loss.

Yep, the day before Cavez gave up like 6 runs in 1/3 of an inning,

then Manny came in, and did what he always does, and we lost, of course.

Any reason McLouth wasn’t in the lineup?

Is he on the back fields getting some more work in?

Don’t know, I’d think they’d be trying to get him as many PA against live pitching as possible right now.

Nyjer fouls off a couple of pitches now. Long AB.

And now he Ks on a fastball at the knees.

Now he's a goner

EOF Ks Ian Desmond on 3 pitches.

Nice to see him handling the right handed batter.

EOF worries me this year because it seems like so many of these good LOOGYs are one-year wonders.

I hope he has a great year.

Line drive by McCann-double!

He's on fire.

Literally on fire.

Looks like the eye issue may finally be behind him. I sure hope so.

Sammons in to pinch-run for McCann.

1-1 to Glaus now with a runner at second.

Foul by Glaus. 2-2 count now.

Sorry

Missed how Glaus got out.

Heyward grounds to second

Hmm, three grounders to second today for Heyward?

I think he is going to be great, but feel some have too high expectations for him,

in his first year.

Productive out – Sammons to third.

Infante up now with the runner at third, 2 outs.

Outfield playing shallow on Infante.

Infante takes a big swing, misses. 2-2.

Thanks for this Bronn

+1000
Thanks for letting us use your “eyes” today.

RBI

Grounder down to the third, Zimmerman back-hands the grab, but can’t throw out Infante.

Sammons scores

Infante single - scores Sammons

Diaz up with a man on first.

1-0

Diaz pulls it, off the shortstops glove

Goes into left. Infante makes it to third, beats the throw.

On the throw, Diaz comes into second base.

Hit for Matty!

Marquis' day is done

Riggleman calling for a replacement.

Gregor Blanco in to run for Diaz. Brandon Hicks in to run for Infante.

Tyler Walker in to pitch.

Not sure who the hitter is-pitcher's spot now.
The batter is Hinske now.

2 outs, runners at second and third.

Wright just got an RBI and Nats 5 / Muts 2
Headed to 6th

oops typo – 4-2 per HeyJude below

I would much rather be watching our Braves,

just scouting today :)

Greer is tall lanky side thrower on the mound right now – would scare me to death in the batter’s box.

Wright with 3 hits today, making the score 4-2 Nats after 5.
Got David Wright on one of my fantasy teams.
He is on fire, good call.

Yeah, I think so. The power outage is more an illusion than anything else. He should hit 25ish HRs this year.

To be honest, he's the only one to look really good for the Muts today.
2-2 to Hinske.

Full to Hinske now.

Hinske swings and strikes out on a change-up. Leaves the runners stranded.

End of 6th inning now.

2-0 going into the 7th..
It would be nice to have a little more insurance than that if possible.

A little insurance wouldn't hurt

I still miss Skip.

You are not alone. Wore my shirt the other day and got to tell the story many times of who it was on the front. Made me miss him even more.

Okay

Hicks at short stop. Blanco in left field.

Moylan in to pitch against Zimmerman.

Moylan uses Dave to get strike 1 against Zimmerman.

If you don't speak funky Australian relief pitcher

That’s a change-up to you.

1-2 to Zimmerman now.

Moylan K's Zimmerman.

Mike Morse just misses a HR off of Moylan. 2B to LF.

It’s been since 2008 since Moylan gave up a HR.

Sentance fail.

Hey Bronn – I’m somewhat new, so forgive me if you’ve answered this question a hundred times already – but why Superman?

Why not?

That was my entire reasoning for using him.

Entirely logical. I like that.

I suppose with all the posting I'm doing for my play by play

the row of supermans down the side of page is a bit annoying.

Nah, it’s colorful :-)

Some guys trying to start up the Braves war-chant.

They sound horrible.

Great catch made by a fan in the stands, it sounds like.

MLBN, says Frenchy has the best OF arm in BB,

what do y’all think?!?

I'll buy it

But I still don’t miss it.

Same here, he just made an awesome throw straight on target to home.,

but don’t miss his bat.

Delmon Young
Yep, he's got a great arm, as well.
Moylan Ks Bruntlett

2 outs now.

93 on the fastball from Moylan

0-2 to Nieves.

Peter going 93? Gotta love that Aussie.

Lol, good announcing moment

Jim Powell was talking about how Moylan mostly stays on the rubber while he’s pitching. Then he steps off and walks it off for second.

And Moyland Ks Nieves

Strikes out the side.

Nieves went down on three pitches.

More changes

Kevin Mench in RF. Pete Orr at Third.

John Schuerholz in the booth.
What's he talking about? Heyward?

Melky Ks against Tyler Walker.

Conrad up.

Schuerholz talking about how they grabbed Moylan after the WBC several years ago.

Their australian scout was a coach on the Aussie team.

Talking about Heyward now. His parents paid him a surprise visit today from Georgia-drove down starting at 4 AM

Nice!

Sorry he has not had a great day at the plate for them.

Nice comments to them from John about how they should be proud of not just what type of son they have in JH, but the parenting they’ve done too.

JS talking about how balanced the team is, how good FW has done putting this group together.

About Heyward’s parents, he had talked to them and told them they should be proud of just what kind of man he is already.

Thanks y'all

Walker worked a quiet inning. Got Conrad swinging…I think Thurston grounded out.

Saito in to pitch. Matt Young in LF. Blanco moves over to CF. Heyward still in RF.

Missed this earlier

Freeman is in at first. Grabs a foul ball for the first out.

JS talking about how they got Glavine in as the special assistant. They wanted him a part of the organization again. Wanted him to get some exposure to various front office aspects of the game so he can see what he might want to ultimately do with the team.

JS was asked to guess what he might eventually settle on doing with the team, but he doesn’t really know. Broadcasting, scouting, managing, or organizational.

Duh! (V8 slap to the forehead) just remembered I have a small external speaker that I can hook up in the headphone jack to make the audio of this where I can actually hear it.

Now that’s thinking with your dipstick!

Back to the game-Saito walks…somebody. Whoever was in pinch-hitting for the pitcher.

JS talking about how fun it is to be surrounded by talent, good scouts, good players, and great managers. It sucks when you’re on teams that aren’t contending and don’t have good resources. Well duh.

Missed a little bit of this conversation-they’re talking about the MLB rules committee and floating realignment.

Apparently, it’s a topic on their discussion list, but the committee has yet to actually talk about realignment.

Good to know.

Hicks chases the ball down in foul territory for out #3 here.

Going to the bottom of the 8th, it’s 2-0.

Dang Mets. Castillo with a 3 run homer to get the lead now 5-4.

Sammons with a double. Braves catchers are all going nuts this spring.

Freeman up still-don’t know the count right now.

Sorry

Freeman out.

I think he moved Sammons over, but could be wrong.

Heyward was up-but then Heyward Ks on a foul tip.

0-4 for Heyward. Time to panic and start stocking up canned goods and water.

Hicks with an insurance run we needed!

And another! Blanco

Yeah, I’m not keeping up at all at this point.

But bottom of the roster guys are getting a couple of hits here.

Hopefully Hicks works out for us-we really could use more depth in the organization at shortstop. He’s got a pretty solid glove and his bat isn’t bad, but he needs to mature quickly.

Yeah,

I’ve been impressed with him during ST.

Concepsion Rodriguez checking in now.

Nats got a run back to tie the game in the 8th 5-5

Morse with a single past Conrad to open the 9th here.

1 out now. Bruntlett up.

I still have commercials

Bruntlett pops out

2 outs now.

We've lost the radio feed.

Well, I was wondering if all the interview time made them have to catch up. LOL

guys trying to do the war chant again

They no sense of melody, harmony, or pitch. And it’s not even that hard to sing it.

Hicks with a nifty play at short throws out the runner at first to end the game.

Quient 9th inning for Wagner, Braves win.

Have a great afternoon all!

Thanks for the PBP.

Thanks Bronn for the play-by-play!

Enjoyed it y’all.
