From an Tweet by AJC beat writer Carroll Rogers:
Cox announced today that Jason Heyward has made the team and will be Braves opening day right fielder.
There you have it! Financial considerations be damned, and for good reason, Heyward is the best option for the Braves in right field. Congratulation to Jay-Hey... let the new era of Braves baseball begin.
UPDATE 12:45pm
According to the Braves twitter feed, Heyward will wear uniform number 22.

My cousin actually bought some whistle tips off the internet, and put one in the tailpipe of my truck over Christmas when i wasn’t home. He didn’t weld them thank goodness, but when i cranked my truck up and i heard whistling, i just kep revving it until it stopped. So what happens to some of these Milky Melky Cabrera types? In other words, who’s the odd man out and where does he go?
Sweatsack - March 26, 2010
I’d say Marek is off the 40-man.
justincredubil02 - March 26, 2010
Or FUMA.
justincredubil02 - March 26, 2010
Either way, Melky is on the roster and playing quite a bit, I imagine.
justincredubil02 - March 26, 2010
Nah
Diory Hernandez is going on the DL, to clear a spot for Heyward. I think CB (sorry of it was someone else) had a post about it a while back
eaheckman10 - March 26, 2010
Has Diory been DL’d yet? If it hasn’t happened yet, I don’t see it happening soon.
CBs post was speculative (not that it was bad or anything – it was a great read), but he was making the point that IF Diory got DL’d it could be a really good thing for Atlanta.
justincredubil02 - March 26, 2010
I imagine he would be…isn’t he going to be out until mid-season
eaheckman10 - March 26, 2010
I know that he had surgery, but according to this, he was never put on the DL: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/transactions/ATL
justincredubil02 - March 26, 2010
Of course he wasn't yet.
There is no need. He’ll go on the DL when Heyward is added, which won’t be until right before the start of the season.
cavebird - March 26, 2010
Apparently, Redmond is the odd man out – unless they plan on keeping Thurston AND Conrad, and using Diory’s spot for Heyward.
justincredubil02 - March 26, 2010
They actually took Todd Redmond off yesterday, and he cleared waivers and goes to Gwinnett. So i’m sure Heyward takes Redmond’s spot.

JKowalek - March 26, 2010 via mobile
Torn.
Very excited to see him out there from Opening Day forward but would like to have that extra year two weeks in Gwinnett would have bought us.
blairblink - March 26, 2010
What would it matter if he signs a long-term deal before he’s eligible for arbitration? I wouldn’t be surprised to see him sign a long-term deal before the end of this season. Use Longoria’s contract as an example.
And by the time that happens, we’ll be done with Chipper and Lowe’s contracts, which frees up $30 million right there. Plus count in Billy Wagner and Saito and there is another $10+ million gone. Now I know others will have received raises, etc. But we’ll have the money for him.
I’m all for this move, regardless of any financial implications.
dunnytwogloves - March 26, 2010
it matters in terms of bargaining power…Heyward’s FA will start in 2015 opposed to 2016 now…most players only sign long term deals through thier arb years…well we just lost one year of control…so even if he signs that dela through arbitration (which is more than likely going to happen, it seems) we still have him fro one less year.
Swo12bv - March 26, 2010
The bargaining position isn't that much different.
It is just that he would be bargaining on a free agent year instead of a fourth arbitration year, and there just isn’t that much difference there. If we had held him down for two months, it would have made a difference, but not two weeks.
cavebird - March 26, 2010
That is IF he walks as a free agent...
for all you know, he’s another Chipper, McCann, etc about to spend his entire career with a tomahawk on his chest.
Mr. Sanchez - March 26, 2010
Im optimistic, but I def. see that happening.
JKowalek - March 26, 2010
ur absolutely right…as we have stated before we don’t know what he wants…i just happen to think its prudent to plan for the worse and rejoice when you’re wrong
Swo12bv - March 26, 2010
Wouldn't "the worse"...
be Nick Adenhart, at which point he never reaches free agency (cold, I know)? Basically, worse is he busts like French, or suffers a debilitating injury early in his career, at which point service time means nothing.
Mr. Sanchez - March 26, 2010
This
In fact, I think this show of good faith on the Braves part could be part of the negotiations:
FW: “Jase, we don’t want to screw around, whadya say we buy out your arb years and go $50m/12. We’re not trying to screw you, after all we could have held you down until June but didn’t.”
JH: “Hmm…good point. Eric, what do you think?”
EH: “Never turn down your first million.”
Although maybe I’m just living in denial.

Ace_of_Braves - March 26, 2010
they NEVER "ignore" financial elements
Baseball-wise, it’s an obvious choice.
Wren et al must have also concluded that financially they gain more from having him in big boy pants (i.e., ticket sales, significant boost to win pctg, etc.) than whatever they would gain from contract timing games.

We’ll have money to pay him. There’s no doubt about it.
