Another televised game today as the Braves take an over-nighter and travel to Jupiter for the Marlins today and then the Cards tomorrow. I'm scheduling this post the night before as I will likely be at the Braves minor league camp all morning. The game is once again on Fox Sports South at 1:05pm.
Here are the pitchers scheduled to throw; Tommy Hanson, followed by four guys competing heavily for the last bullpen spots, Jesse Chavez, Manny Acosta, Michael Dunn, and Mariano Gomez.
If you're going to either of those two games (or any Braves game for that matter) make sure you take a picture and submit your own View From Your Seat.

Good Spring so far
I like what the starters have been doing both on the pitching and offensive sides… I cringe at some of these bullpen outings, but its still early… Especially whenthe starters are throwing a heavy diet of fastballs and guys start to catch up once the bullpen comes in
HansonManCrush - March 17, 2010 via mobile
The best thing about this spring not named Jason Heyward...
Kris Medlen. He is looking very good so far.
JKowalek - March 17, 2010
agreed and would add Glaus, too. I didn’t know what to expect but so far he’s looked better at 1B than I thought and hitting them where they ain’t. now if the power would return….
RMM - March 17, 2010
I feel like I’m in the dark. What little I’ve seen is due to coordinating my lunch hour around game time.

Gotta get the AT BAT app for a smartphone… I listen tothe radio broadcasts at my desk while doing little work

So, I just learned that they have this same App for Blackberry…oh, shoot. Now I will never get any work done!
justincredubil02 - March 17, 2010
Or maybe I will, since the BB 8320 isn’t supported…

If you have the baseball package....
you can actaully sit at your desk, watch and no one will ever know.

Not game time related
Nats released Elijah Dukes… Wren could pick him up on a minor league deal and dump No show Blanco
HansonManCrush - March 17, 2010 via mobile
Intriguing, but I dunno that he’s got the demeanor of a typical Braves player… and the best he could do is challenge for a bench spot — that might not go well with him.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
You know it's pretty bad when...
The worst team in baseball releases you. Might be time for a good long look in the mirror Elijah. You have way too much talent for this to happen.
I Saw Buzz Beaned - March 17, 2010
Some Spring stats thus far...
BB: Braves as a team: 82 walks. First in majors; second is RedSox at 58.
OBP: Braves first at .404. DBacks second with .385.
AVG: DBacks at .322; Braves 8th at .294.
K: Braves 11th best at 79, but every team better has played fewer games than ATL’s 14. Braves are the only team with fewer K’s than BB’s. Phillies (12 games) have 70, which is second to the Dodgers (10 games; Taiwan didn’t count).
Pitching:
ERA: Braves (9-5) third at 3.85 (Phils, 7-4, 3.36)
K’s: Braves 5th, essentially even with top teams that have played more games.
BB’s: Braves 10th, again very comparable to best teams playing fewer games.
WHIP: 8th at 1.40 (indians 1.20; Phils 1.23).
Oh, by the way: That ‘Best Rotation in Baseball’, the Angels, have 26th best WHIP and 25th best ERA thus far. Just sayin’, Mr. Heyman.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Great stat compilation
Oh, and John Heyman is a dipshit
Zeus12888 - March 17, 2010

Escobar
Heyward
tdoublem23 - March 17, 2010 via mobile
Is it opening day?
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
Looks like Bobby’s most likely lineup decision, assuming J-hey starts in Atlanta and not Gwinett. Gotta get Nate going today…
say-hey-j-hey - March 17, 2010
Nate never thrived in the 1 last year
Injuries aside. He still should turn it around.
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
Yeah, Nate needs to hit 7th. Prado, J-hey, Chip 1-2-3
say-hey-j-hey - March 17, 2010
Are we just punting the 8-hole?
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
I thought the same thing. gotta be diaz or melky
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
8 spot doesn't matter
If Heyward is hitting the expected 60+ HRs from the 7 spot. Lol
Bronn - March 17, 2010
8th hole will be occupied by Diaz today.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Anyone watching on MLB.TV
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
Green hats!
Lennox - March 17, 2010
Marlins (8-6): Coghlan, Maybin, H Ramirez, Cantu, Morrison, Luna, Peterson, Davis, Andrew Miller Pitching. Forgive the spellings – I don’t know these guys!
Split squad yesterday – lost both.
Braves don’t meet Marlins this year until May 26 (Miami). July (I think) in Atlanta.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Nate up. 1-0. Game underway.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Go Braves!
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Get your eyes checked again Nate.
Lennox - March 17, 2010
3-0, then 3-2 (all called)… fouled. Grounder to 2nd. Out 1.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
3-1 to Prado. Easy fly out to center.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Does any one know a good source explaining how, for example, we could keep Heyward longer if he comes up later in the season?
Gage23 - March 17, 2010
If Heyward stays down for a few weeks, his major league service time isn’t a full year, and major league service time is how they determine when you are eligible for free agency and arbitration. If Heyward stays down for about 3 weeks, his free agency is delayed 1 year. The Rays did this with Evan Longoria. If he stays down for about 2 months, his arbitration is delayed 1 year.
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
So how long do we have him before he is a free agent? How many full years?
Gage23 - March 17, 2010
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Baseball_transactions#Free_agency_and_salary_arbitration
Lennox - March 17, 2010
Thanks so much.. haha, it’s all so complicated!
Gage23 - March 17, 2010
also, when is the date after which he can enter the season and it not count against his service time?
Gage23 - March 17, 2010
I don’t know the exact dates but I will look them up
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
Forget that..
Just go ahead and sign him long-term in a couple of years.
sddbaker - March 17, 2010
Just go ahead and sign him long-term in a couple of
yearsweeks.Fixed.
Bronn - March 17, 2010
yeah...
Probably right!
sddbaker - March 17, 2010
Chipper…. Batting righty… 1-0 pitch skied to short right. Caught by 2nd baseman Maybin.
That’s the inning.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Rain, Rain, Go Away!
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
will we get the game in, ya think?
RMM - March 17, 2010
IDK, it looks to be a light rain, right now.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
I’m torn, i’ve got the game DVRing at home, but i probably won’t have time to sit and watch it all this evening. Not sure if i want to watch it tonight knowing the outcome so i can breeze through it, or go in blind. Obviously if i keep coming here i won’t be going in blind….

HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
It’s ugly, but I like it
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
Tommy Hanson getting started in bottom 1st.
Pitching to Coghlan…. good Irish name. Strike one.
(my source is the Marlins radio feed on XM).
carpengui - March 17, 2010
2-1 pitch singled to right center.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Cameron Maybin (2B) up. Swing. Miss.
Bunted to Hanson on 1B side. Sacrifice works. 1 down, runner to 2nd.
Hanley Ramirez up.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Have to say it when we play the Marlins
I played Baseball with Brett Carrol of the Marlins for four years when I was younger
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010

HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
I actually added it last year
It was probably a product of context
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
Are the hats today not fitted?
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
No
Unless hanson has too big a melon
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
Cool. 1-0. Liner up the middle scores Coghlan. 1-zip Marlins.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Ball one as Ramirez steals second easily. Cantu is up.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Ross would have thrown him out.imo.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
1-2 count. Ed Rapuano behind the plate. Ball 2…
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Bobby Cox vs. Freddi Gonzalez is 28-26. I guessed it might be that close.
Cantu pops out to Glaus behind 1st.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Anyone think there’s a chance Freddi comes back to Atlanta next year?
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
If they are looking for a similar guy
I think Freddi is it. Can’t you just see the boys coming home….Smoltz, Glavine, whose next?
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
I would like it, he's a good manager.

KoKo the Monkey (T-Bone) - March 17, 2010
Logan Morrison up… Marlins #1 prospect.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
#2 prospect
No way he is better than Stanton
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
He has a nice swing.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
2-1 count, 2 down. Morrison is 4-27 on the Spring. Yes, you’re right – forgot about Stanton.
Fouled off.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
LoMo is legit though
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
How ’bout “closest thing the Marlins have to a Heyward”?
Two more fouls. Still 2-2.
Comebacker…. 1-3 in the scorebook. End of the First.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Marlins broadcasters were talking about the debate over whether Stanton makes the club. It’s apparently gonna be a close call.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
No way he’s ready. He isn’t like Heyward, who has patience out the wazoo. He is a hacker. He’ll get carved up
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
Glaus/McCann/Escobar… the first team made the trip today – likely because of the Cards game down there tomorrow.
Glaus groundout to short. 1 down.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Called strike three on Brian. 2 down.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
BMac, watched the final K.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Don’t like that radar I’m seeing. They’ll be lucky to get the starters through 4.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Escooooooooooo, with a single up the middle.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Single through the 3rd/Short hole for Escobar. And that brings up….
carpengui - March 17, 2010
pop out for Heyward
Lennox - March 17, 2010
Jay-Hey up
Got under one, popped up.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
0-1 pitch hit to short center. Ramirez catches it for the 3rd out.
Correction – Jude’s post was right on Esco’s single.
carpengui - March 17, 2010

autographs for our Talking Choppers down there? Sad :(
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
beacuse...?
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010

fizzbot - March 17, 2010
IDK, but I trust what CB and the others were saying yesterday in a OP.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
He signed a few things for me
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
CB said he would not even look at the Braves fans, must less sign,
maybe he was just having a bad day, who knows.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Must have been. I saw him at 3 games this spring, and he signed for me at all of them
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
That makes me feel better,
after reading that last night, it left a sick feeling in me.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Yeah you should be good. He signed 2 cards, a hat, and a ball for me
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
Well crap
I’m planning to head down there in a couple of weeks. Was hoping to hit him up then.
Bronn - March 17, 2010
same here
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Luna vs. Hanson. 1-1. Increases his .412 average with a single.
McLouth loses it (E8) on wet grass. Luna to second.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Nate tried to bare hand one, ugh
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Looked like it took off funny after hitting the ground
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
Brian Peterson (RF). Heyward catches a fly for 1st out.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Those hats really are goawd awful. They may as well have a pot of gold on them with Little Mac popping out
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
Davis ©. Foul. Ball. Pop up…. Glaus saves McCann. 2 down.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Nate charged with an error on that bare hand try :(
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Nice hanson
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
K looking
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
Miller time. Ball one. Strike. Somebody in the stands didn’t like it!
Strike three looking. End 2nd inning. strands the runner; error no consequence.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
If the stadium were 10-15 miles further south, I’d be more optimistic about the weather. It’s gonna be close.
Strike to start Diaz.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Single to center!
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Diaz just hits...
say-hey-j-hey - March 17, 2010
Ball to Diaz

BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
If he can reach it…. he hits lefties!
carpengui - March 17, 2010

Little Mac needs a hit all kinds of bad
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010

1-0 pitch becomes a Sac Fly to Center.

carpengui - March 17, 2010
I was busy with a sale at work...
…how has Hanson looked?
thenightstallion - March 17, 2010
Good
Gave up a quick run but settled down and is locating his pitches well. Lot of movement on his fastball.
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
Excellent. Thanks very much for that. Has he thrown that nasty nasty curve any?
thenightstallion - March 17, 2010
MLB Network
The game is also being aired on the MLB network with the FSS feed.
DFranz - March 17, 2010
Every Friday night this year (except opening week), it’ll be the “Los Marlins” on the uni’s.
3-1 to Glaus. Walked. Bases loaded.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Glaus walks, bases loaded Mac up.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
"Los Marlins" verrrrrry interesting
RMM - March 17, 2010
"Lost Marlins"
Would be more appropriate.
Mountngrown - March 17, 2010
0-2 to McCann … close low pitch for a ball.
Drilled to the wall!
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Mac hit one to the wall, 2 in.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
4-1 Bravos!
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Who's playing RF for the Marlins?
That was very much weird.
Bronn - March 17, 2010
The ball is bouncing weird in the OF today.
Lennox - March 17, 2010
Peterson
Mighty Healthy - March 17, 2010
That was ugly, but Braves score 3
bighop - March 17, 2010
Ball bounced right by the RFer, might be a single and an error.
Lennox - March 17, 2010
Miller done. We knocked him out of the game.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
I think his defense knocked him out of the game. All 4 of the runs should be unearned.
sleezer1788 - March 17, 2010
True
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Except for the 2 walks he gave up.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Andrew Miller is done. That’s Brian Peterson out there in RF.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Interesting. The Marlins radio guys didn’t react like that RF play was a big deal.
I wonder if Miller was having grip/control issues with the rain.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
It looked like he should have had it for sure, as hard as it was hit, he’d probably have held the Braves to one run scored.
Lennox - March 17, 2010
Escobar up. I missed the new pitcher…. ah, “Hensley”. 2 hits, no runs or walks this spring.
Groundout to short? End of the Braves half of the 3rd.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
2-2 count. Fouled on ground to first.
Coghlan strikes out.
carpengui - March 17, 2010

That hook looked really good from Hanson.
Bronn - March 17, 2010
Tommy K's Maybin looking on the fastball outside
Mighty Healthy - March 17, 2010
Luna (2b) up. Having some signal quality issues…
Of course, they’re talking and not reporting… 1-2 pitched fouled. Ball two.
Cloooose curve … ball 3.
K called.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Hanley gets a single thru Esco…. lazy attempt?
carpengui - March 17, 2010
yeah, didn’t look like he was trying that hard
DFranz - March 17, 2010
yeah, looked lazy here too
bighop - March 17, 2010
or wet grass? Like Peterson's ball
Mighty Healthy - March 17, 2010
Possibly
His footing can’t be great and it is spring.
BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
Maybe but I don’t think he thought he needed to go any harder. He was right there, but the ball skipped over his glove.
sleezer1788 - March 17, 2010
Let’s hope that gets questioned in the dugout.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
For what?
I would rather him go hard in the regular season not ST!
Jay212033 - March 17, 2010
+1
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
Cantu up w/2 down. 1-0 pop-up to Glaus. End 3rd.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Hanson breezed through that inning..
looking good!
Mighty Healthy - March 17, 2010
Some rain relief coming shortly… not the end, but a break.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Um......it's raining harder!
Jay212033 - March 17, 2010
Now we have to listen to TP.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010

eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
yep, and not Chip as in Jones.lol
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
talking about Heyward on TV
DFranz - March 17, 2010
Apparently TP can’t comprehend J-Hey’s patience. lulz
eaheckman10 - March 17, 2010
Heyward chops one to 1B Morrison. 3 unassisted.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
I think that’s what they said.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
High short pop to RF gets Diaz. 2 down quick. Hanson up.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Grounder to 3rd… they’re done.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Hanson made contact twice, reckon he could take McLouth’s spot?
bighop - March 17, 2010
funny :)
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Chip said we gotta go, I'm getting wet,
he must be afraid he might get his hair messed up, HaHa
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Hanson back in for the 4th.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Logan Morrison to lead off their 4th.
Strike one. Ball. Strike 2.
Grounder through for a single.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Thanks for the play-by-play
I thought this game was supposed to be on FSS? I’m not getting it here in Milledgeville.
alligatorimpersonator - March 17, 2010
I'm watching it on that. My MLBN was blocked for some reason.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Milledgeville

Shark Judge - March 17, 2010
Afraid so...
one guy plays grab-ass and I can’t get my Braves baseball!
alligatorimpersonator - March 17, 2010
That was a nice triple side by side of Heyward, McGriff, and Stargell

carpengui - March 17, 2010
Well, at least he hit it fairly hard.
Lennox - March 17, 2010
0-1 to Prado. Pop up to Peterson in short RF. 2 down. Prado is 0-2 with a SF.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Chipper. Batting lefty now? 1-2 after a foul. Turns 38 y.o. in May.
2-2 count…. 3-2 on a check swing.
Grounder to first again. 3 unassisted.
That’s over.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
Thankful we got our runs before facing,
Hensley.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Looks like rain is gone for another inning or 2. Yeah, Hensley has looked Real Good. Generally giving up weak grounders.

I like what Chipper just said about Heyward
“He has done absolutely nothing to deserve a trip to Gwinnett. Atlanta, get ready.”
kidnarcolepsy - March 17, 2010
No one is saying he deserves a trip. Chipper talks too much.
dutchschultz - March 17, 2010
You shut that mouth up! He’s Mr. Jones as far as you’re concerned….haha
thenightstallion - March 17, 2010
Chipper
Doesn’t care about the Braves 6 years from now, when we could have Heyward for a huge bargain if we just send to Gwinnett for 3 weeks. 3 weeks! 60 ABs of Heyward now for 600 ABs of 26 y/o Heyward. No question in my mind what the right move is.
Shark Judge - March 17, 2010
You are incorrect.
The three weeks sending him down would only mean the difference between Heyward being a fourth year arbitration player and a free agent in six years. The difference in third year arbitration and free agent salaries is generally small, the third year arbitration players usually get about 80% of market value. Fouth year arbitration players are naturally a little bit higher. This means, that the “bargain” we would get in six years for those three weeks does not amount to much. Remember that we can always keep him indefinitely if we are willing to pay the market rate—-the question isn’t a different between 60 ABs and a full year of Heyward, it is whether we are cheap enough that we are worried about a couple of million dollars six years from now.
cavebird - March 17, 2010
True
I got my dates mixed up. And I don’t actually think we should keep him down till June to avoid Super 2 status. He’s too good right now for that.
Thanks for the correction.
Shark Judge - March 17, 2010
that's not what he's saying...
He’s saying he will be eligible for arbitration for that year and the year before anyway.
sddbaker - March 17, 2010
I've seen you explain this before -
you should make a fanpost or something so everyone can see, because it makes a lot of sense and puts it in a new perspective.
alligatorimpersonator - March 17, 2010
A player may not become a free agent until after 6 full years of service (unless the team simply doesn’t offer him a contract/arbitration during his first 6 years).
A player is recognized as having a year of service at 172 days, if he has fewer days of service he is not credited with a year of service, thus delaying their free agency by a year.
Lennox - March 17, 2010
Top of order – - Coghlan up… 1-2.
Hit to center. Nate catches for second out.
carpengui - March 17, 2010
That was actually Brent Cleven. Also, Conrad is playing 2nd now.

Chip talking to Hanson on TV.
DFranz - March 17, 2010
Recap: 4-1 Braves after Five.
Hanson has been sharp – Marlins haven’t been able to put anything together. Their run was a single, sacrifice, single. Since then it’s really been a shutdown, pretty much. No walks.
Andrew Miller could have had a better fate, but gave up walks and ill-timed hits, especially in the 3rd inning (double by McCann cleared the bases for 3 RBI). Hensley has shutdown the Braves since then… and is still in, I believe.
Cheers, all.
carpengui - March 17, 2010

I don’t know exactly when it started but here on TC all double plays are referred to as Vidros, as it seemed like he hit into a ton….even if the numbers don’t back it up.
bpk228480 - March 17, 2010

BeantownVol - March 17, 2010
My thinking as well.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Why would we be trying to give him away? He’s cheap organizational OF depth as long as he has options left.
Lennox - March 17, 2010
I was thinking of him in a trade package later on, if need be.
HEYJUDE - March 17, 2010
Doubtful that he’d have any value in a trade. Most likely he’ll be given a look next spring to possibly win a backup role and then traded/cut much like Josh Anderson was last year.
