Braves Make First Spring Training Roster Cuts

Via a press release:

The Atlanta Braves trimmed their spring roster by 13 players today, optioning seven players and re-assigning six others. Right-handed pitchers Stephen Marek, James Parr and Todd Redmond were optioned to Gwinnett (AAA), along with left-handed pitcher Lee Hyde. Right-handed pitchers Juan Abreu and Kyle Cofield and left-handed pitcher Jose Ortegano were optioned to Mississippi (AA).

The six players who were re-assigned to minor league camp include right-handed pitchers Erik Cordier and Chris Resop, left-handed pitcher Mike Minor, catchers Braeden Schlehuber and Jesus Sucre and outfielder Cody Johnson.

Atlanta now has 44 active players remaining in its Major League camp.

No real surprises here. Cofield had opened some eyes, and Cordier was having a good spring, but I imagine for most of those guys they need to get working on preparing themselves for the rotation.

Noticeably absent from these cuts was Craig Kimbrel and Jeff Lyman.

I'm glad Kimbrel stayed

perhaps its to let him hang out with Wagner a little more? Both guys have similar pitches and IIRC, Wags had control issues early in his career.

Or maybe he's just impressive enough...

that he has a chance to make the roster, as unlikely as that seems.

I count among those left for the last 2 spots in the pen:
Venters, Reyes, Proctor, Lyman, Kimbrel, Gomez, Dunn, Chavez, Acosta. Maybe Gearrin also?

I gotta think they’d give him time in AAA, but you never know.

And it seems like Proctor has a spot already. Bobby is ALWAYS giving him praise and it sounds like he’s pretty healthy. My guess is that Chavez and Proctor will break camp, but if he’s not healthy, I’d put money on JoJo as another lefty.

Chavez needs to step it up...

I’d say Jojo would make the team ahead of him if the decision was made today.

yea

i think kimbrel goes down to AAA the only thing i disagree with is proctor and chavez. i really want that other lefty in the pen

Chavez has not been impressive during ST.

I don’t want him coming in from the pen, lefty or not. just sayin’.

Has Gearrin had any more spring appearances? I saw where he pitched well in one appearance.

Acosta is gonna make it

who else would come in when the bases are loaded in the bottom of the ninth with the game on the line?

And give up a walk-off hr.
excuse the newb question

what is the differnece between re-assigning a player and optioning a player? they both end up in the minors, right? is it some administrative voodoo?

If a guy is on the 40-man roster, then you option him to the minors. If he’s not on the 40-man, then you re-assign him.

Thank you, makes perfect sense.

Cuts & Observations

Was at the game yesterday and Kimbrel look really strong, quite impressed with this kid. My question is what is up with McClouth? The two games I have been to this week he has struck out 5 times. Looks clueless, I know it’s early and players go through things but I can’t see him in the starting lineup on opening day when he can’t make ANY contact what so ever. Other than Nate, to me all the other guys look right on track. Oh before I forget, this Mitch Jones kid. In BP I thought his bat speed was tremendous. he hit one in the Astros park in BP that yes was wind aided but went 3/4 up the screen behind center field wall. I saw no one else hit one there from either team. To me a kid to keep an eye on.

No big suprises here

kimbrel is just staying to work with Wagner & Saito some more before being sent down in the final round of cuts and the same goes for Lyman as far as gaining more experience no way either of these guys make the opening day roster.

Thank god Resop was sent down man he is horrible but Corider could be a darkhorse to watch if injuries arise.

Look for Proctor and Reyes to grab a couple of bullpen spots in the final round of cuts as well.

Go Braves.

thanks for clearing that up Frank

Hey Swo12bv

Thanks for clearing up the fact you are a total a#@S! hole.

Well, don’t speak like you actually know the ins and outs and they whys and the why nots.

KimbrelGearinn

these 2 look like the future set up and closer with wagner and saito barring injury
the placeholders. someone else can always step up eg lyman, hyde. Just
looking at the present depth chart projections.

re assigned versus optioned. kind of complex but simply put a player with
options can be brought up and sent down without exposure to waivers. an
assigned or ‘outright’ designation in many situations requires the player
to pass through the waiver wire.

I think another ‘noticeably absent’ should be Freddie, under the assumption that those left in camp are competing for jobs (unlike, say, CoJo who was there for the experience). That says a lot about how they feel about Freeman

Freddie’s also the only real viable first baseman that can back up Glaus. Mitch Jones is there, but he’s more of an outfielder.

Hinske...

Odarp, among others possible.
