From a DOB tweet:
A bearded Melky Cabrera is among the early arriving position players in Braves camp.
I can just see him calling Johnny Damon and saying, "dude, I showed up with this beard and they're going to let me keep it!" That could be what pushes Damon over the edge towards the Braves, as we all know he's a fan of the facial hair, something that was banned on the Yankees.
Senor O'Brien and Senor Bowman are keeping the Damon-to-the-Braves rumors alive and kicking, though even O'Brien is ready for them to be over with.

are the workouts open to the public???
StottsEra - February 20, 2010
I'm not sure
But I’m pretty sure today’s workout is literally just the guys stretching and playing catch. I’d wait until mid-week if I was you

i have a job mid week is no good for me. im bored today and have nothing better to do than watch billy wagner throw
StottsEra - February 20, 2010
We signed Garret Anderson on Feruary 24th last year
Could the same happen with Damon? If we do, I’ll be praying for a Bobby Abreu-like comeback season.
Scott Coleman - February 20, 2010 via mobile
Abreu did basically the same thing last year he’s always done; if anything, he was actually a bit worse than in previous years. It was hardly a comeback. And Damon didn’t exactly decline last year either, so a “comeback” doesn’t make sense in his case either. If Damon puts up only a 2.0 WAR season (last season was 3.0 WAR), he’ll still be worth the $7M the Tigers gave him… Of course, I’m still glad we didn’t sign him!

Lets keep beating the dead horse
HansonManCrush - February 20, 2010 via mobile
DIAZ>DAMON!!!! Please don’t waste the damn money!
HansonManCrush - February 20, 2010 via mobile
but Damon/Diaz & Heyward > Diaz & Melky/Heyward
Scott Coleman - February 20, 2010
But all reports point to a Damon signing causing a Diaz trade
HansonManCrush - February 20, 2010 via mobile
where does it say that?
We better not trade MattyD.
Scott Coleman - February 20, 2010
If you keep Diaz
Then our four outfielders are Damon, McLouth, Heyward and Diaz…Diaz would be the fourth, meaning our backup for center would be Omar..
For versatility’s sake, you trade Diaz and keep Melky. I think that’s the biggest argument against signing Damon for many of us — if you sign Damon, the logical course of action is to trade Diaz not Melky.
Doghnut - February 20, 2010
IF we signed Damon, I don’t think there’s any doubt that we’d keep Heyward in AAA until June to get some experience and delay his arbitration clock. So until June 1st, our OF would be Damon, McLouth, Diaz and Cabrera. So we wouldn’t have to trade Diaz or Melky until June. Who knows what the market would be for those two a few months.
As many know, I’ve been for signing Damon as long as it’s no more than $3MM. But if it means we’re trading Matt Diaz and not Melky Cabrera, there’s no way I’d want to sign Damon.
Scott Coleman - February 20, 2010
I agree
I’d only take Damon if it came on the cheap and we ended up flipping Melky… not if it means trading one of our most popular players for a one-year rental of a has-been Yankee cast-off that couldn’t get another job anywhere else.
The Keith Lockhart Era - February 20, 2010
Or we could just keep both.
Who else is going to be on our bench? Most speculation has it coming down to either Thurston on Mitch Jones for the last spot, and if we’re willing to carry Jones, then we could certainly carry Diaz instead.
Lennox - February 20, 2010
thats a good point as well
MattyD every night as a pinch hitter would be great. No teams would ever bring in a LOOGY since they know Bobby will bring The Lefty Muncher off the bench.
Scott Coleman - February 20, 2010
The Lefty Muncher sounds like an awesome porn name
award6 - February 20, 2010
hahaha
Matt Diaz is The Lefty Muncher.
Scott Coleman - February 20, 2010
I was thinking something simpler, maybe Matty Double-D. This is after his implants of course.
bwellnjonesco - February 20, 2010
Makes sense
We could let Mitch Jones hang out across the highway for awhile, and if he’s raking at Gwinnett and someone on our bench falters, the option is right there. It would definitely be Diaz>Mitch on the bench, just gotta wonder what else Matty is gonna have to do to earn a starters spot.
The Keith Lockhart Era - February 20, 2010
hit righties consistently
Swo12bv - February 20, 2010
I’d feel safer having another backup middle infielder on the bench (besides just Infante).
bwellnjonesco - February 20, 2010
Well, we might get to stop this mess now.
Per MLBTR, Damon is close or has agreed to terms with the Tigers on a one-year deal.
cavebird - February 20, 2010
Thank you Heyward
Erihury - February 20, 2010
You guys are all missing the point..
the point is
WE NEED PICS OF MELKY’S VIRILITY MAN HEDGE!!!
13thieves - February 20, 2010
this
Jacob Peterson - February 20, 2010
this
Swo12bv - February 20, 2010
oh my beep god
here we go again
hawves - February 20, 2010
Melky with a beard?
I like him already!
Jacob Peterson - February 20, 2010
This.
cbwilk - February 20, 2010
Maybe he did that to curry favor with DOB...
since we’ve seen how much he adored the bearded Idiot. Or maybe he’s trying to fool DOB into thinking we actually DID sign Damon.
Mr. Sanchez - February 22, 2010
and as our 4th OFer, when his ops is .850 and he rips 20 HRs and plays gold glove defense at every OF position, I will like him even better.
