Talented Dominican shortstop prospect Edward Salcedo may be nearing a deal with the Atlanta Braves. Via MLBTR, the Braves are considered the front runners after asking the commissioner's office to investigate his actual age. From the translation of the original Univision.com article, Salcedo was originally signed by Cleveland as a Scott Boras client in 2007 for $2.3 million. Since then his age has been in dispute. He is now represented by Edgar Mercedes, and Salcedo's correct age has been determined.
The Braves have apparently applied for a visa for Salcedo to have him visit their spring complex in Florida. Atlanta has a history of signing top level Latin shortstop talent, with their most notable signings being Rafael Furcal and Elvis Andrus.
Here is a video of Salcedo (hat tip Prospect Tube):

Always good to get talent.
cbwilk - February 19, 2010
He better be a badass shortstop for $2.3 million bucks
Lord knows we need solid middle infield prospects.
Scott Coleman - February 19, 2010 via mobile
well, he never actually signed (hence why we can sign him)...
and who knows how much the asking price is now.
Mr. Sanchez - February 19, 2010
so how old is he?
fizzbot - February 19, 2010
And how is his shoulder?
TradeAndruw - February 19, 2010
Frankly, I don’t care if this kid is 18 or 22. I trust would trust our international scouting department with a newborn, and if we are talking first-round money, then there has to be a lot of potential with this kid. He’s got a pretty sweet stroke from that video too. Hope we get him.
Steinmanberg7 - February 19, 2010
Maybe he could be the future at 2nd
and prado could play 1st in the future. Or one of them at third after Chipper retires. I just want someone who can hit
liv4sport100 - February 19, 2010
freddie freeman?
BravesRaleigh - February 19, 2010
Freddie Freeman sucks
he had a busted wrist while making the toughest jump in minor league baseball…he struggled a little bit, so obviously he’s not a good prospect anymore. Trade for Adrian Gonzalez!!!!!
Scott Coleman - February 19, 2010 via mobile
Then Logan Schafer and Heyward suck too cause those guys have been injured.
Just messin mvhsbball, I know you weren’t serious cause you’d rather trade for Pujols, right?
Sparhawk - February 19, 2010
I guess
the only problem is that we already signed Troy Glaus for 2010, so im not exactly sure where Albert would play.
Scott Coleman - February 19, 2010
Wherever he wants
bravesguy311 - February 19, 2010
Albert would be all we need, he can play every position, pitch, and run the bases
HansonManCrush - February 19, 2010 via mobile
He can even be the bat boy.
Sparhawk - February 19, 2010
or even Chipper’s dip boy. Get the man a pinch whenever he wants one!
Scott Coleman - February 19, 2010
we’ll field 8 and let albert DH……national league style…:p
lemke2blauser2bream - February 19, 2010
Left side
We could use a little more depth on the left side of the infield.
MacDaddy16 - February 19, 2010
left side
Amen, Escobar could be gone in 3 or 4 years, same with Chipper. This guy sounds like a 1st round type player, I hope we get him and a few more infield prospects in the mix.
bighop - February 19, 2010
I was thinking Esco moves to third eventually.
TradeAndruw - February 19, 2010
me too.
bwellnjonesco - February 19, 2010 via mobile
2013
We have Escobar in arbitration thru 2013, we have an option on Chipper in 2013. Will Wren deal with Escobar’s agent? Will the Furcal debacle cost the Braves an extension of Escobar? WHen will Chipper retire? Thank goodness we have some time. I’m glad we’re front-runners for this type player. When he’s 22 or 23 years old, we’re likely to be needing help at short, 3rd or both.
bighop - February 19, 2010
We can sign Escobar without ever even talking to his agent.
justincredubil02 - February 19, 2010
ya that doesnt happen very often
Swo12bv - February 19, 2010
Someday
I will post a remark you can agree with, but I sure haven’t yet.
bighop - February 19, 2010
Escobar has nothing to do with Furcal, they are not represented by the same agent.
Kizner represents Alcides Escobar, who reports indicate is an entirely different person than Yunel Escobar.
Lennox - February 20, 2010
Chipper
We’re past due needing to back up Chip long term. I’d like to know more about Salcedo’s tools. His swing actually reminds me of Esco. Can he run/steal, field etc? He must be fairly intelligent. He’s a former Boros client, emphasis on former.
MacDaddy16 - February 19, 2010
Supposing we do sign this guy, which seems like it will be the case… Where does he play this year?
My bet is that they hold him out of full season ball and he crushes Danville.
timmy3 - February 19, 2010
2 year old article on Salcedo, interesting stuff
The Myth of Edward Salcedo
Cracker! - February 19, 2010
Was about to link that...
very interesting. And from size descriptions, he sounds more likely to end up at 3rd than Esco.
Mr. Sanchez - February 19, 2010
another old discussion about Salcedo
Edward Salcedo
In this discussion a good point was brought up about Elvis Andrus. Being a key part of the Tex trade, but still being years away from the bigs. Signing Salcedo strengthens our farm system and could be used to grab another big part down the road.
Also, interesting tidbit of info. The Braves offered Felix Hernandez more money than Seattle, but he signed with the Mariners because Freddy Garcia was his idol and was pitching there. Never knew that.
Cracker! - February 19, 2010
DOH!
And Freddy Garcia was his idol?!?!?!?!?
WHAT KIND OF AN IDOL IS FREDDY GARCIA?
The Braves had a few pretty good idols play in their organization. Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Warren Spahn, and Phil Niekro to name a few.
PWHjort - February 19, 2010
Apparently, cultural heritage supercedes
ABILITY. Damn Damn Damn
Cracker! - February 19, 2010
I remember I used to had this free internet service called Freei. They advertised the crap out of Freddy Garcia for some reason. I believe they were a sponsor or something. I guess some people thought Garcia would be Mr. Somebody..
bwellnjonesco - February 19, 2010
Everything I read about him suggests he's moving to 3B.
Read: Chipper’s replacement.
PWHjort - February 19, 2010
Same here
If he and esco man the left side of the field one day together, talk about 2 serious guns for arms on that side.
Cracker! - February 19, 2010
Chipper's replacement for a little more than $2MM?
Done deal.
Scott Coleman - February 19, 2010
A prospect project.......
Maybe Terry can work out the rough edges in that swing and make him a solid hitter.
homerlanding - February 19, 2010
i hope you’re joking.
10-4 - February 19, 2010
Hey!
TP helped Frenchy and KJ……oh wait. Now I get it.
MacDaddy16 - February 19, 2010
TP
he doesn’t even project confidence. He always has a look on his face like he’s trying not to shit.
Cracker! - February 19, 2010
lol…its weird how our former NL MVP gets bashed so much as a hitting coach….
lemke2blauser2bream - February 19, 2010
Cracker! - February 19, 2010
It’s just business…..so, what have you done for me lately?
MacDaddy16 - February 19, 2010
ur right…it was ’91….i was 9…..fack him…. :)
lemke2blauser2bream - February 19, 2010
He’s not mytype but FW has had a lot of practice showing fan favs the door. I’m sure he has a plan.
MacDaddy16 - February 19, 2010
by the looks of his swing in that video he will need a lot of coaching
homerlanding - February 19, 2010
If that guy becomes our manager next year, I’m gonna go apeshit
Scott Coleman - February 19, 2010
Why? That means he won’t be the hitting coach…
justincredubil02 - February 19, 2010
Eddie Perez will be manager, and everyone will be happy.
bwellnjonesco - February 19, 2010
seems like we’re always getting top notch prospects from the DR is that because our scouting is jut that good?
scottsharp76 - February 19, 2010
i wouldnt say we get top prospects…it seems we do the most with what we get….we get really solid players who fly slightly under the radar…Teheran was highly touted, but far from the top prospect that year (if i remember), the same goes for the Delgados.
Swo12bv - February 19, 2010
Yeah, we usually aren’t among the highest bidders in the DR market. However, we seem to be leading in other less developed areas such as Panama. I know we got both Delgado’s from there and I wanna say that’s where we got Bethancourt but I’m not sure about that one.
ajones2522 - February 19, 2010
Teheran is from Columbia, and he actually was the top international prospect that year.
cbwilk - February 19, 2010
i knew he was from COlumbia, but I forgot whether there was a higher prospect than him…so i was wrong…eh it happens…i still hold firm that we dont traditionally get the high end talent out of the DR
Swo12bv - February 19, 2010
I think you’re right, the big name DR guys all seem to end up with the Yanks and Red Sox. But I think the Braves get the best out of Panama, a lot of the best out of Venezuela, and do very well in some of the more untapped places.
cbwilk - February 20, 2010
completely agree…. they do a much better job than everyone else gettin players from the nontraditional Latin American countries (Andruw Jones from Curacao for example)
Swo12bv - February 20, 2010
So this gets a front page article...
a possibly signed Dominican, while our actually signed Europeans get a lowly fan shot? I’m thinking their may be a bit of Hemispherism going on around here.
Mr. Sanchez - February 19, 2010
That’s illegal in most states.
oVecKid - February 19, 2010
We signed some cricket players?
bwellnjonesco - February 19, 2010
well
seeing that nobody in Europe plays cricket (silly Americans call the UK Europe), i don’t get your point.
we signed some pretty talented players from Europe. will they pan out? doubtful, but we’re making in-roads in a new talent pool (where VERY few teams scout).
we’re going to sign this kid to be our defacto 1st round pick, allowing us some flexibility to go over slot for some pitchers we like in the supplemental round (knowing we have the 3B of the future in the fold).
apoxonbothyourhouses - February 19, 2010
well
Silly Europeans pretending they don’t play cricket. Saying that nobody plays cricket in Europe is like saying nobody expects a special ending at Fran’s Spa behind most truck stops on I-75.
bwellnjonesco - February 19, 2010
Wait, if people in the UK play cricket, and the UK is in Europe, then don’t people in Europe play cricket?
cbwilk - February 19, 2010
oooooo a syllogism
Swo12bv - February 19, 2010
is it just me or does he generate a lot of bat speed?
lemke2blauser2bream - February 19, 2010
thats whati was thining, but theres tons of wasted movement and that makes it harder to make contact, generally.
Swo12bv - February 19, 2010
true
but big long swings and a great eye can get you A LOT of hits (just ask AROD (pre ’roids)).
apoxonbothyourhouses - February 19, 2010
Tons of upside but....
let’s not get carried away people. He’s 18 years old, we haven’t even signed him yet, and he hasn’t played one inning of pro ball. Let’s hold off on penciling him as Chipper’s replacement for at least a couple days.
was385 - February 19, 2010
But where’s the fun without a dose of presumption. lol
MacDaddy16 - February 19, 2010
Let's Get Him
He looks good on film don’t know how he’ll do in live games against better pitchers but we really need infield depth in our minor league system. If we can get a 3rd base prospect to take over when Chipper leaves.Maybe our recent draft pick Kreke I think his name is can fill that hole.
BravesMania - February 20, 2010
no offense but Kreke was a 22 year old who showed no power at all in Rookie Ball..im not really sure he is the guy thats gonna help us out too much.
I’m still holding out hope for Brandon Hicks…he adjusted well later in the year…if he can keep getting better he has the skills to be a very good 3b/ss. I love his stat line for 2009, he just needs to bring that contact rate up a bit and his slugging will increase over time…and i love the 17/18 steals
Swo12bv - February 20, 2010
I'm partial to Edison Sanchez..
big kid, interested to see what he can do once he gets stateside after a couple years for the DSL. Still young, big frame from the listed size.
There is a Hanson kid down on the farm too, but he seems like a DH type with very poor fielding #s.
Mr. Sanchez - February 22, 2010
I hope we sign this kid before
Other teams get involved and push the bid higher.

I hear this guy's Dominican...
If that’s the case, why hasn’t Omar Minaya signed him yet?
GouldisGold - February 20, 2010
Cause he’s young and talented, neither are Omar’s style.
cbwilk - February 21, 2010
Aww..Royhobbs needs to make Omar a common sense app.
