Good news today for the first of our former aces:
Atlanta Braves President John Schuerholz announced today that former pitcher and future Hall of Famer Tom Glavine has been named as Special Assistant to the President.
Glavine, 43, will assist Schuerholz on various baseball and business projects and will, on occasion, work on special assignments for Executive Vice President & General Manager Frank Wren and Manager Bobby Cox.
In addition to his baseball operations duties, Glavine will serve as an occasional guest for the Braves Radio Network Pre-Game Show, and will serve as a guest analyst for selected games on the Braves Radio Network. He will also join broadcasters Chip Caray and Joe Simpson as a guest analyst for Sunday home games televised by FOX Sports South.
Hopefully this is the route that John Smoltz will take as well, though it looks like he still wants to try and pitch at least one more year. This should be a great way to work Glavine into the fold of the organization. He still retains his connection with the fans by participating in weekly broadcasts, but he also assumes some front office duties. Good move by the Braves front office, keeping one of the real smart baseball guys in the organization.

Excited and surprised
I didn’t expect this especially after Wren (perhaps appropriately) dumped Glavine last year. Things got a little heated, and even though it appears Frank made a good call in the end, I am pleasantly surprised that things were patched up so quickly. If not for Bobby and Schuerholz I’m doubtful this would have happened, let alone so quickly.

Exactly. Glad Glavine didn’t hold a grudge against the Braves.
And it’s good to see Glavine still with the Braves Organization. Wooooooooo hooooooooo!!

Yahoo! has a rumor that Smoltz is looking to be a midseason guy (like Pedro Martinez) and is open to coming back to the Braves to play for Bobby again.

Good move
by the Braves organization.

EXCELLENT!
Glad to see Tommy’s back doing good work for the Braves, even if it’s not every fifth day

Wren better hope this Special Assistant role doesn’t put Tommy over the GM.

It doesn’t.

is my sarcasm button broken again?

Apparently. Guess you used up all your internet fame already…
cbwilk - February 11, 2010
it goes by so fast…

This is a good thing for all parties involved – fans included. Apparently, Glav doesn’t hold grudges like John does.
I wonder, a few years down the road, if we will possibly see a front office with Smoltz, Maddux, Glav and Chipper that dominates other front offices like they did other teams.
justincredubil02 - February 11, 2010
now he just needs to convince Maddux & Smoltz to join him if for nothing other than tee times…

Very happy that they did this.

Hooray to whoever patched up that big mess!!! Glavin deserved better than how that all was handled last year. Glad to have him stay on board.
rbravesfan - February 11, 2010
i agree with this….letting him go was the right decision…but they handled it incredibly poorly
Swo12bv - February 11, 2010
It was beyond poor. Wren is such a tool.
FitzFan - February 11, 2010
Aaaaand, we are back to disagreeing – but since this is an old argument, I’ll let it go.
justincredubil02 - February 11, 2010
Will he work with the young Ps in the minors too?
like soft tossers such as Jose Ortegano
Mr. Sanchez - February 11, 2010
YAAAA!!!
This is some of the best news I’ve seen all off season, an off season that I think went pretty well.
bwellnjonesco - February 11, 2010
Looks like Glavine and Maddux will go in together as Braves in 5 years. Time to book my flight and hotel. Have there ever been 2 300 game winners inducted in the same year, much less from the same team.
BullManUGA - February 11, 2010
Great news
Glad things have been worked out with Tom and he’s back with the Braves, albeit not playing. What’s next for him, I wonder? Pitching coach? Manager?
John Holton - February 11, 2010
In light of this development, would Tommy be a candidate for Bobby’s seat after this season?
bravesguy311 - February 12, 2010
This is awesome news.

"Special Assistant"
Sounds like a retirement gift where he gets paid to shine a seat with his @ss.
