Brooks Conrad's go-ahead, walk-off grand slam to beat the CIncinnati Reds will forever remain one of the top Atlanta Braves moments of 2010.

For Brooks Conrad, the 2010 season was one of extreme highs, as well as extreme lows.  Quite literally, the 25th man to make the onto the Braves roster out of Spring Training, there was not a lot of expectation out of Conrad other than as a pinch-hitter, pinch-runner, and the occasional utility infield backup role.  However, the game of baseball is very much a marathon, and with a rash of injuries to the Braves' lineup, including the annual Chipper Jones injury, and a horribly timed injury to All-Star Martin Prado, resulted in a lot of playing time that Conrad normally wouldn't have seen.

What have you done for me lately?  Although most will remember Brooks Conrad for the latest and last memory, the forgettable postseason defense which contributed to the demise of the Braves' playoff hopes, it very much should not be ignored that without some of the contributions Conrad made to what was an overall poor offense throughout the season, there wouldn't have been playoffs for the Braves.

Star-divide

Fact: The Atlanta Braves secured the National League Wild Card with a 91-71 record, one game over the 90-72 San Diego Padres.

Brooks Conrad was awarded a +0.7 WAR by FanGraphs (which factors in his supposed "bad" defense, putting him over Baseball-Reference's +0.5 WAR assessment), which is to say that Brooks Conrad statistically contributed to seven-tenths of a win throughout all of 2010.

Throw such statistical jargon out the window for a moment, and let's look at some game logs:

  • May 20, 2010 - Bases loaded, one out, bottom of the ninth, Braves down, 9-6.  Brooks Conrad hits a walk-off grand slam off of Francisco Cordero, to left-center, and the Braves win, 10-9.
  • June 12, 2010 - Runners on first and third, one out, top of the ninth.  Braves and Twins tied, 2-2.  Brooks Conrad takes a gigantic home-run cut for strike one, but promptly drops down a squeeze bunt on the next pitch to score Gregor Blanco from third, and successfully reaches first base in the process.  Braves go on to win, 3-2.
  • July 24, 2010 - Bases loaded, one out, top of the eighth, Braves and Marlins tied, 5-5.  Brooks Conrad hits a go-ahead grand slam off of Burke Badenhop, to deep right, and the Braves go on to win, 10-5.
  • August 10, 2010 - Runner on first, no outs, top of the ninth, Braves down 2-1 to the Houston Astros.  Brooks Conrad hits a go-ahead, two-run home run to deep right field off of Matt Lindstrom.  Braves go on to win, 4-2.  (This is also the game where Chipper Jones tore his ACL, thrusting Brooks Conrad into game as substitute)
  • August 13, 2010 - Nobody on, one out, bottom of the seventh.  Braves and Dodgers tied 0-0.  Brooks Conrad hits a go-ahead home run to deep center field off of Hiroki Kuroda.  This would be the only run of the game, and the Braves win 1-0.

And here we have five Braves wins, where the outcome was decidedly made by Brooks Conrad's bat.  And this excludes the scenarios in which Brooks Conrad delivered a game-tying hit, a base hit with two outs in a close game, or the instances where he was inserted as a pinch-runner and subsequently scored.  I'm not giving 100% of the credit to Conrad for winning these games single-handedly, because in many of these instances, teammates still had to get on base.  But someone still has to hit the ball, in order to make a splash.  Nor am I implying that the Braves would guarantee have lost the three games they were tied in, but the two of these in which they faced deficits, had they not been overcome, the Braves finish the season 89-73, and there's no playoffs.

In conclusion, Brooks Conrad contributed heavily to five Braves wins, to which without but two of them, would have prevented the Braves from even making the playoffs.  It's okay as baseball fans to be upset with the errors in Game 3 of the NLDS, but try not to forget that the guy you're unhappy with, was a huge reason why the Braves were even there.

2010 as a whole, was Brooks Conrad's finest season ever.  In mixed duty, Conrad finished out the season with a career-high slash line of .250/.324./487.  Regardless of role, an .811 OPS is nothing to sneeze at.  Mostly due to the fact that out of his 39 total hits on the season, 20 were for extra bases, meaning yes, Brooks Conrad hit more XBH than singles for the year.  He drove in 33 RBI in 177 total plate appearances.

Power off the bench was his specialty, and his appropriate role, before the injuries thrust him into excessive duty.  In his 64 total pinch-hit plate appearances, Conrad delivered seven extra-base hits, three of them being homers, and two of those, being the aforementioned grand slams.  Simply put, he earned the moniker of "Clutch Conrad," with his outstanding clutch stats based on Baseball-Reference's designation, being a .313/.365/.750 hitter in late and close situations, and in overall high leverage situations, batting a cool .341/.420/.750.

Next Year:

Expect to see Brooks Conrad next year as he is still under team control.  As long as the rest of the Braves can maintain healthy, Conrad can excel at his role of being the all-important, switch-hitting, clutch, power bat off the bench, and be used more sparingly to avoid being over-exposed.

Love Brooks. I’m sure that dude is working on his fielding. He seems very competitive and those errors down the stretch had to personally hurt pretty bad.

I don't blame Conrad for the errors in the playoffs.

Everybody knew he was a horrible defender. I guess if anyone you could blame bobby for sticking with him with Diory on the bench. And for the record, I don’t remember Brooksy for the playoffs, the first thing I think of is that first walk-off GS.

How can you not blame the person who committed the errors?

That’s like me not blaming Hitler for the Holocaust.

he had bad advisors

you forget that "robbed homer" against Reds. It would be a winning run in the top of 9

later in the game Heyward hit 2 run double. that game was also when Prado got hurt in a head slide to home plate.

WAR is context neutral

Use WPA if you want. Less predictive, though.

Oh God

Can we please stop dredging up that awful, terrible memory? I’m trying to obliterate it from my memory (like the first Tex deal) and this is tres inconvenient.

Thanks.

LET IT BLEED

The wounds don’t heal if you don’t let it bleeeeeed!!

I haven’t heard that before

Gunshot Victim #3 would like to talk to you over here for a second.

We need Conrad on the roster next year just so we don’t get tempted to complain too much about Uggla’s defense.

I wonder if he’d have any value as a DH in a trade?

DHs rarely have any value in a trade in general.

what value he had...

was washed away in the playoffs. secondly, i dont think any team would view conrad as a DH. he doesnt make contact enough.

I still love the Rawdog!

I hope he keeps hitting those late inning bombz!

I agree, he is not someone that will get any value at all being traded, every team has their Brooks Conrad, ours just had a chance this year, most will not. I think he will be used as a PH and that is it. If you can’t stay down on a ground ball that could mean a game in a playoff situation, you shouldn’t see the field, but he can contribute with the bat as we have seen

Bill Buckner skulks off sullenly

Honestly, Brooks did have a hell of a year.

I hope fans cheer him his first time up in 2011

It’s not like he hasn’t heard enough boos after the NLDS.

Note: I was at Game 3 and dear lord I booed him lustily, but dammit, emotions like the utter “FUUUUUUUUUUUUU” that that error caused are impossible to contain.

He pinched hit in Game 4

And got an astounding ovation. I was at both games, and for the amount of hate get got in Game 3, it was the complete opposite for Game 4. He will get cheered in 2011. Braves fans are too good to hold a grudge!

Yeah...

I was there at Game 4, and I was so happy about him getting that ovation. Between that, and the emotional spontaneous tribute to Bobby at the end, losing was a little easier to take for me.

Conrad's slam against the Reds wasn't only a memorable moment in 2010...

….it’s probably one of my all-time favorite moments in Atlanta Braves history. At the time, the Reds were the king of the comeback. Inning started off nicely, but as soon as Heyward struck out……my confidence wasn’t too high. Then Conrad’s little ass steps to the plate, hits a fly ball to LF, and I said to myself…..that’s another run, at least. Turned out to be the winning run…

And it was made better by Conrad’s initial reaction, turning back to the dugout, seeing his teammates screaming, and then realizing he just one the game. That had to be an incredibly special moment for Conrad, and even if I were a Phillies fan I wouldn’t be able to help myself feeling good for the guy. That’s every kid’s dream right there….

If there’s any game I remember it will have to be the grandslam against the Reds. I couldn’t believe what had happened after being down by all those runs in the 9th!!

I will also remember the game where Brooksy caught the ball..in his shirt! haha..you guys remember that one?

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Jersey-of-Braves-Brooks-Conrad-eats-grounder-s?urn=mlb-250619

correction..he didn’t catch the ball, he stopped it.

3rd to 2nd?

Was it just me, or was Conrad not bad (like, liability bad) at defense until they put him at second instead of 3rd? I distinctly remember at least one play of his making a webgem, and generally he avoided throwing the balls away when he would overreach on his ability. The change to the other side of the diamond, different ball angle, and different turns for his throws seemed to be what became his undoing (this is all relative—I’m not saying he was gold gloving it up at 3rd base).

this could explain why he booted those grounders

but by god my heart jumped a little every time conrad threw sidearmed all the way from 3rd

His errors at third (ie, inability to throw to second to start a double play), were the reason he was moved to second.

Conrad worked a series in Milwaukee subbing for Chipper, as I recall, his D at 3rd wasn’t bad. I really think he was just incredibly uptight during the playoff stretch and playoffs. Couldn’t throw to 1st or 2nd, couldn’t handle a ground ball.

I think Brooks won more games with his bat than lost with his glove. I picture him taking ground balls off his chest all winter, a la Corbin Bernsen in “Major League”. This year was both good and bad in equal amounts for him; I expect that next year will be more good than bad. He’s a hell of a guy to have around.

So, yesterday I had a baseball game, the game was six innings so here is my stat line: 6IP (95 pitches) 5 hits 2BB 2 ER(6R) 6Ks… not bad for a 14 year old ambidextrous(sp?) pitcher, ok, back to the topic, my 2nd baseman made 3 errors counted for 4 runs made by errors, he reminded me of Conrad.

You're just 14?
yeah, why?
I don't know...

I just assumed you were older, for some unknown reason.

4 unearned runs?
yes
many moons ago I pitched one game

my line? .9IP (67 Pitches) 6K 0hits 1BB 8errors…6PB 2 fielding 9runs.
My Catcher should have played 2nd or 3rd cause he could not catch my knuckle or curveball. My coach acted like it was all me…and sat me on the bench.
My first time to pitchand I walked away and never played organized ball again.

The irony of it was it was my last year of Babe Ruth BB and I had been traded to this expantion team…the team I was facing…my old team (power houses of the league..I played RF/CF for them)…..They of course won the championship and my old coach voted me to the All-Star Team. This was in the era before Cell phones or email so I did not hear about it till after I returned from an extended vacation with my family!….I wonder if he would have let me pitch for the All star team….I did strike out their top of the order and got their lefty to pop (it was a huge can of corn that my RF dropped of course) out.

Sorry to seem like it was sour grapes but it just goes to show that no matter how good you are it is always a team effort and you can’t blame just one…all should share the blame!

Reminds me of the last game I pitched years ago in the state semis:

7 IP, 12K 5H – we lost 12-9.

Now I see why you always stick up for KK...

you’re both LOSERS. Don’t know how to win.

Ha! That was the only game I lost that year.

So you're saying...

you can’t come through in the clutch? Crumble when the pressure is on?

Conrad, Please pack your bags and leave Atlanta immediately. Why would we keep this choke artist around when he is the sole reason we lost in te playoffs? Hell I’m a better defender at 2nd in highschool then he his in the majors.

Banned.

For? Pointing out the fact he choked in the playoffs and cost us the series? Please tell me how I am wrong.

Well we couldn’t hit very well in that series…that didn’t help.

He hit .378 with runners in scoring position

realll choker

Gotta say you have a point

As this post says, he helped us to get to the postseason, but he also helped to end it early. I still think he has good baseball in him, but for his own good and ours, I think he should play somewhere else.

You act like someone has a contract out on him or something…

I would love to see a pre-season video of Him...

In a remake of “It’s a Wonderfull Life”! I could just see him up on the ledge and Bobby Cox “Clarence” talking him down and saying…you know that if they would have been better without you…then we would have not won all those games! Of course some above would want the alternate ending where some Braves fans push him off!!!!!

Can somebody do this vid….I need a laugh!

I wouldn’t mind not seeing him in a Braves uniform next season.

Where do we find the bench spot?

5 bench spots (assuming 11 pitchers)

Ross
Diory- we need a backup SS just in case also
4th OF
Marton
5th OF/Conrad/Hinske

I don’t hate Conrad- but I think if he’s a Brave to start this year- it will be in Gwinnett

Marton?

was this a poor attempt at Joe Mather?

I'd be fine either way...

add a pair of veteran bats like Hinske, and round out with defenders would be fine by me.

Or keep Conrad since he can switch hit as a primary pinch hitter, and hope TP can get him a little better with the glove. Considering he’d make the minimum, I’d be fine with that too.

I’m willing to give him another chance. He does have a good enough bat, and fielding can be fixed, at least the errors he made, if he’s strong enough mentally to not let it scar him like what happens to some players (see Ankiel and pitching)

I only have love for Brooks Conrad

We had the poor mans Dan Uggla (Brooksy) now we have Dan Uggla haha. There is room for both on next years roster. He earned a spot.

Brooks Conrad is not a poor man’s Dan Uggla – mainly because he wouldn’t be a starter on most MLB teams. Second, the only spot he earned was a spot on the next train out of town. He may have contributed to a few wins during the season, but he is almost directly responsible for our early playoff exit.

Does anyone know

the story behind Uggla getting Conrad’s #26?

Hopefully, it means we only have 2 2B on our team…
