Braves Vs. Giants: Game Two Batter Vs. Pitcher

Holy crap, Matt Cain doesn't even look at the plate when he pitches!

Holy crap, Matt Cain doesn't even look at the plate when he pitches!

Raise your hand if you think it gets easier now? No one should have their hand up. Matt Cain, tonight's starter for the Giants, is just as tough of a nut to crack as Tim Lincecum is. Perhaps our only hope is that the bad umpiring call will go against them tonight instead of against us (because you know there will be at least one bad umpiring call at a critical point in the game).

The Braves have not faced Matt Cain that much, and when they have it has not been with much success, but we did manage to beat him a couple of months ago in Atlanta. Here are the head to head stats:

Not much success there for Atlanta, but very limited action.

The Giants have seen Tommy Hanson even less, and Tommy has done well against them in the past -- striking out a batter per inning -- though much of that was last year. Their stats are after the jump...

Star-divide

Total 55 46 6 1 1 0 3 6 17 .130 .255 .196 .450

Not very much success at all, except for Pat The Bat, and all of this is taking into account extremely small sample sizes.

So there you have it, not much familiarity with either pitcher for these lineups, though most of the guys have faced each other at least once before. Should be another nail biter of a game.

Take tonight and last nights game means nothing... let's take home field advantage.
5-2

Braves win…I feel it.

Impossible.

This lineup cannot produce more than 3 runs. Which could stand up, if Tommy is dealing. That’s the path to victory I see tonight.

Didn't they put up 8 last week?
Against a passel of middle relievers.

That’s not who the Giants will be throwing tonight.

It's just a feeling...

Plus, for his career, Cain’s just 2-2 with a 4+ ERA against us.

I have a feeling we'll win.

But my feeling says 2 runs to their 1. Let’s hope our feelings coalesced on the right outcome.

Except your post said:

“This lineup cannot produce more than 3 runs.”

Not the same thing. Say what you mean and mean what you say.

Ok:

This lineup cannot produce more than 3 runs against decent pitching.

CAIN IS NOT THAT GOOD!!!!!!!!!! I was at his last start of the season against the Padres, the ONLY big start of his career and he folded when the bats couldnt get him any support the first couple innings. There is hope guys. We should absolutely win the next two with a chance to finish it in atlanta.

i agree…. pitchers who continually post 4 WAR seasons suck.

But he did not pitch well his last start, ergo, he is a bad pitcher.

He/she/it blinded me with science!

And...

We haven’t had pitchers this season that have experienced a lack of run support which led to them giving up runs!!

Kenshin Kawakami

is a made up name. I looked it up!

someone made mention

of getting his face on a milk carton and starting the search to find him. Did anyone get on that? I put some flyers up in my neighborhood but no one in the northeast knows who he is

You lose.
fine you all, who have seen a small fraction of the amount of cain i have seen can root for the giants

ill go with the braves, we’ll see what happens

Have fun with that.

I'm sorry but....

My hand is up. I really don’t think Matt Cain is as good as Lincecum. I’m not saying he’s not good. I’m just saying it’s unnecessarily pessimistic to assert that we have no better chance of success against Cain than against Lincecum, since obviously, historically, most teams have had more success against Cain.

It's true

he is a 1b vs Lincecum a 1a

Hanson

is an ace in the making and he’s got the mental ability to get it done tonight, he’ll be dealing for sure…

Will the defense support him? Pujols help us all…

I call on a higher power

HansonCyborg help us all.

I think

before the game Meds is gonna channel his energy into Tommy, combining the two and creating a super Hanlen who will destroy them…. DESTROY!!!!

I’m calling it… 27k’s and 1 HBP… He’s gonna put a hole through Posey’s chest….

Ugh I digress, it’s been a long day at work and I just want to go home and watch the game

I want Diory to get the start over Brooks.

Basically, write off the bottom of the order (everyone after McCann). They won’t do shit. You depend on getting 2 runs out of your first 4 guys, and try to put an acceptable defense behind Tommy. That means getting Brooks off the field. I don’t know if Diory can play third, but if he can, stick him there. Omar is clearly more comfortable at second. If he can’t, do a straight replacement: Diory plays second, Omar plays first, and put Ankiel and….ugh, maybe McLouth? in the outfield.

Sorry, that last sentence should obviously read...

Omar plays third.

this

put Diory at third… He’s got a better glove than Brooks, shows flashes of some sorta plate discipline when no one is looking, and Omar is better at 2b. Plus Brooks back on the bench is his comfort zone and it gives you a decent switch0hitting bat off the bench

This.

Give the young fella a chance, could he possibly be worse?

I want to apologize

for being an a-hole at last game’s thread, about the ranting, I was soo frustrated, I just couldn’t keep it in. I’m lucky the mods didn’t even give me a warning and those who I offended for my cursing and stupid words, I apologize.

I think everyone felt that way last night, including the mods.

That’s why I left the board as soon as the game was over. A good nights sleep puts everything in perspective.

It's funny...

I was not that discouraged. I saw us hold the Giants to a single tainted run and lose a nailbiter to one of the top 3 pitchers in baseball. In my opinion, that actually bodes somewhat well for the balance of the series.

the idea

of balance is nice and all… but a best-of-five series isn’t always enough time for it to “balance out”… That’s why we’ll win tonite and finish them off sunday and monday…

I didn't mean to put it in terms of balance.

You’re right, it won’t balance out in a 5-game (or even 7-game) series. And 1 loss is one-third of the way to elimination, no matter how you got there. What I mean to express is that the Giants lineup looked bad last night against our third-best starter. That gives me confidence that our first- and second-best starters can hold them in check to the point where we’ll only need the 2 or 3 runs our lineup is capable of producing.

exactly

I’m not worried… They’ll get it done… I wasn’t expecting a win against Timmy “high times” Lincecum

Wow...

There’s a lot of Matt Cain lovin’ on this thread.

With all this love from the Braves fans, he might get a big head:

Whoops. Too late.

How dare

you accuse him of using steroids.

though that picture is mighty incriminating.

;)

Lincecum and Caine are just like Wainwright and Carpenter

You’re not likely to beat them both, you just have to hope you get lucky against one of them.

The path to a series win...

Is to take a 2-1 lead going into Game 4, concede it to Lincecum, and try to get them in Game 5.

Which means...

We beat Cain twice…Thus, I need to be optimistic about tonight!

Maybe.

It’s not guaranteed that they’ll start Cain in Game 5 on short rest. Depends on how long he goes tonight and how effective he is. But you’re probably right.

I don’t think Cain would be on short rest in Game 5 (Wed), since he pitches tonight. Lincecum, however, would be on short rest in Game 4 (Mon).

With Lincecum’s 119 pitches last night, I don’t expect him to be used on short rest. Game 4 would likely be Bumgarner.

I'd be surprised if you're right.

Very hard to pass on your ace in a potential elimination game.

It is

When it’s on three days rest.

If they’re down 2-1, Lincecum might pitch. Otherwise, you have to figure it will be Bumgarner.

-C

why concede game 4 in atl to lincecum?

he has lost in his career u know, lowe and the bullpen completely matched him for 9 innings in sf. groundball outs are worth as much as strikeouts

I just don't think they can beat Lincecum.

Call it a hunch or whatever, but I don’t see it happening. So I think they need to win all 3 games he doesn’t start.

Some over at MCC dread the orange jerseys, saying they’ve had a stretch of bad games with them, and the Giants will be wearing them tonight.

We’ll take any superstitious help we can get.

TBS! The Superstition!

nyuk nyuk nyuk

Hey...

I have an orange BONDS jersey. Should I wear it?

Seriously, I do have one; I found it in the charity bin here where I work. How much do you think I could sell it for?

$1.50?

or maybe…one hundred BILLION dollars!!!!

If the Padres can get to Cain, in his house, and have him exit early ...

… can we?
I hope so.

let ya know in 9 hours

this team

has come too far to just lay down to the Giants… they’ll get it done

i tried to say this

everyone called me a retard, im with you, go braves.

I'm sorry

did Joe Simpson reall say Polanco was a pussy? I mean he is and all but you’ve got it quoted… Or is that taken from the gamethread the other day?

..from the thread.., obviously..

i thought it was funny

reply fail
haha

i realized right after i posted it… great quote though… I’m sure he’s said it “off the record” lol

hate…the…phils…

GO BARVES!!!!
dear lord

please do not let our lineup fail this hard tonight. amen.

OGGGG RAVBOS!!!!1
lllleeess do it...

BEVARS!!!!!

Then, of course, the Brett Favre:

BAVRES!!!

!!!!SEVARB OG

To do it right, one must reverse ’em all.

This is getting dangerously close to Bavers, and those are for laughing at.

Oregon St. FTW!!!

A man, a plan, a canal

Pamana.

Keys of the Game

1. Patience.
2. Hit to 3rd base (If we cant get hits at least try to induce errors). BTW Their 3rd baseman is a GIDP machine (26-1st)

Walks + Errors = A lot of Runs

Here's the game-winning managerial strategy:

Tell Gonzalez, Conrad, McLouth, Melky, Diaz, and Ankiel (yes, I know only two of the latter 4 will start) that if they swing at a single pitch, they’ll be sent down to the minors and not called back up so long as their contracts last. (I would say send them up to bat without a bat in their hands, but you want Cain to at least believe there’s a possibility they could swing). Hopefully, we’ll get like one walk or HBP out of this. Instantly, more production than we got out of all those spots combined last night.

the only guy there with some patience is Mclouth
Is there ANY chance Infante is moved to 2B....

….and Glaus is put at 3B? He’s obviously got little range, but he’s spent basically his entire career there.

I know it’s likely to never happen, but it couldn’t possibly hurt. Plus, I think Glaus brings more to the plate than Conrad, rust or not.

Why Glaus over Diory?

Just curious. Seems like the kind of series to start an all-glove guy.

Offense, obviously....

….and the fact that Glaus has spent his entire career at that position.

aaaaaarrrrrrrhhhhhhhggggggggggggg!……

For the sake of sddbaker's sanity.....

There is absolutely, positively not a chance in bloody Hell that Glaus will play third…zero, none. He is probably at best fourth on the depth chart for 3rd.

Sorry, not fourth but fifth at best. Infante > Conrad > Diory > Hinske > then you could argue that Gonzo, Lee, or Diaz would be better at third than Glaus.

How can you argue Lee or Diaz would be better than Glaus?

That’s silly.

Because Glaus can barely walk to the batters box, let alone field a position.

Then I'll just disagree....

I may not be aware of Glaus’s limitations at 3B(I don’t think any of us really know), but can you tell me exactly what it could hurt? For a team that’s struggling to score runs and playing awful defense, I don’t see how sticking a relatively healthy player who’s more familiar with the position than any active player on the roster, who can add a boost on offense…….what could it hurt?

And sorry, but I could care less about a depth chart if it ranks Brooks Conrad over a guy familiar with that position. Brooks has made at least one error in what, 5 games now?

Defense is not binary
Care to elaborate on that?
Troy Glaus' physical ailments

PRECLUDE him from playing 3B. His knees will not permit him to have any sort of range, and his shoulder will not permit him to make long throws across the diamond.

Thus, as the Braves have ascertained for themselves, Troy Glaus is not an option at third base. Can we please put this to rest?

'Can we please put this to rest?'

Mate, this is the first time I’ve ever brought Glaus up as a 3B option. Has the organization said that Glaus isn’t an option at 3B? If so, just disregard this. I just haven’t heard anything about it.

What about Hinske? Any word on him as an option? Diory? ANYBODY but Infante or Conrad?

Except the Glaus as 3B optioni has been brought up at least 6 times by others today.

Yes, Hinske is an option, and probably not worse than Omar. I don’t see Bobby utilizing him or Diory, though.

Defense

isn’t just good or bad. There can be many shades of good, and many, many shades of bad.

So when you ask how it could hurt to have played Glaus because our defense was already terrible with Conrad, the answer is because the Braves obviously decided that Glaus’s defense would have been even worse than Conrad’s, and Glaus’s bat wouldn’t make up the difference.

That's well and good....

….I just disagree. Obviously the organization knows a lot more than I do, but unless there’s some injury that hasn’t be disclosed and he was an absolute butcher during his rehab stints, I see no reason to not give it a shot.

Desperate times call for desperate measures sometimes. I’m sure Bobby didn’t expect Conrad and Infante to be THIS bad when they took over, so I was just hoping he’d mix things up a bit.

I guess for me, I assume that Glaus must be very bad at 3B since the Braves haven’t run him out there. Since we’re operating in a situation with assymetrical information, I suspect their additional data suggests he’s not a viable option at 3B defensively.

He WAS an absolute butcher in his rehab stints.

Trivia. When was our last run in postseason, and who scored that run?

Rafael Belliard?

Pete Orr-the key to our 2005 success, obviously.

Trivia Answer

Brian McCann solo HR against Wandy at Houston in the Top of the 8th on 9 october 2005 (19 innings ago)

I was right!

nice.

I just remembered Mac

having a good series in Houston. As I recall he also hit a shot of Roger Clemens earlier in the series.

3run HR

i remember that because that was a rookie against a multiple Cy Young

It's Always Sunny In Philly.....

You know, I finally decided I’d watch the first couple of seasons. I chuckled at a few scenes, but overall…….possibly the most overrated comedy in years. I see the appeal with the college and teenage crowd, but it was a pretty big disappointment for me given all the hype surrounding it.

Eastbound and Down is golden though.

I'm going to have to put my hand up, based solely on regression to the mean.
