Any updates on Hanson’s face/eye is he going tonite?
Hanson struck in eye during batting practice
9:54 pm October 7, 2010, by David O’Brien
SAN FRANCISCO – Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson was hit in the eye by a batted ball that caromed off the ground during batting practice, but said he would make his scheduled Game 2 start Friday in the National League Division Series against San Francisco.
The right-hander was hitting in the batting cage before Thursday’s series opener at AT&T Park when he hit a ball that caromed off a pad on the ground and back into his face. He left the field immediately to be checked out, and was expected to see an eye doctor as a precaution.
A small mark was visiable above Hanson’s right eye, but he was checked out and cleared to pitch.
I always vote 8 for the organization, but teams who field as poorly as the Braves only win if they have great hitting. The Braves have committed the most errors in baseball since the All Star Break and now we have four or five automatic outs in the lineup. I’m not really discouraged, that’s just the way things sorted out due to injuries.
We might be able to get by the Giants because they’re not a great hitting team, but that would be the ceiling for this team.
Of winning the World Series? I stand by my belief the Braves have no chance at that. They might win a game or two and there’s a remote chance they win this series, but they aren’t beating the Phillies (or Reds) in the NLCS.
We definitely have as much of a chance, illustrated by the 1-0 score. The bad call sucked, and I wish Omar had gotten in front of the ball … crap like that happens all the time. Postseason obviously places all the foibles more into the spotlight, and there’s something to be said about umpire calls needing to be as close to perfect during Playoff time because so much is at stake … but there’s always more that we could have done … hit, field.
And I agree, despite what the majority of analysts think, it should be a close series. Let’s get the split tonight!
1) We lost because of bad defense and no hitting not because of 1 call.
2) The Giants have a 1 game to 0 lead in the series, so even if you think the Braves are exactly as good as them, the Giants now have a much better than 50% chance of winning the series.
I think it’s more the hitting that discourages me more than anything. You live with the errors because there’s not much you can do. But when lincecum throws nothing but high fastballs out of the zone and sliders in the dirt and every single hitter continues to fall for it without even working the count, it’s just really disheartening. This team is supposed to be patient an they wear down the opposition with base runners, even if they don’t always drive them in. It’s just a different team since chipper went down.
I think we have got to stop looking at the first pitch EVERY TIME. I get that patience but opposing pitchers have figured out that we WILL NOT SWING and were constantly in an 0-1 hole.
So a team with a strong minor-league system, that won 91 games despite major injuries, and are only down 0-1 in the series after losing to a 2-time Cy Young Award winner and a 3-time All Star (in only 4 years) = 1?
We barely scratched out a win at home against the b-team Phillies on Sunday. That’s the team we have to beat to get to the World Series. There’s no harm in knowing your team isn’t good enough. We don’t hit well and we’re bad defensively. We can perhaps eek one out against the Giants, but there’s no real reason to feel confident about our overall chances this postseason.
I am taking this one game and one series at a time. I suppose if you view the entire postseason as a whole, a 1 = 10% chance of winning the World Series. Thus, I am inclinded to think that is a fair percentage for the Braves, for they would have to win 3/4 against the Giants, beat the Phillies, and then beat the Rangers/Yankees. It would be hard to say that the Braves have a 90% chance to win the whole thing, for that’s ignorant.
I voted a 7 for I still think we win this series. Then I can reassess the team at that point.
Who knows? Maybe the Reds beat the Phillies, the Braves catch fire, Votto and Rolen decide to leave the team and join a boy band, the Braves beat the Reds, the Rangers beat the Yankees but Cliff Lee catches wind of a boy band started in Cincy and leaves to join the “Red Hotts”, and the Braves beat the Frenchy-led Rangers.
The Braves can’t hit, can’t field, and can’t win on the road. I don’t see where their chance is coming from in this series. I’ll be ecstatic if they prove me wrong of course.
I see it the same as you, redwards95. This is a pretty weak team that coasted on fumes in September and October to get into the playoffs. Maybe just getting into the playoffs was the best they could do.
Why is everyone saying they have no chance? Just simply statistically speaking, that is stupid to say.
And non-statistically speaking, the Giants aren’t that great. We’re nowhere near being the best team in the postseason, but I believe we are playing the worst team in the postseason. They are beatable. If you don’t believe that, maybe you don’t belong on this website.
How the Braves bat against guys not named Lincecum. Lincecum is a dominant pitcher, and he was on last night. Sure, we swung at some bad pitches, but that’s what good pitchers make you do. It’s not like the Giants lit up our pitchers last night.
If the Braves win tonight, we can win the series without beating Lincecum, even if he pitches again. Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez < Lincecum. Plus, Lowe, while dominant lately, was our 3rd or 4th starter this season. Now we have Hanson and Huddy going against their 2nd and 3rd starters.
Because I am really confident. Because what’s the point in not being confident. I would rather be confident and optimistic and be wrong than not believe in my team and be right.
While I’m not a 10, why be a fan if you’re just going to assume the worst?
Also, I don’t know that an almost daily FCP is either necessary or even a good idea. People tend to get a little over-emotional about negative experiences. Which, if it happens, can skew the results. I’m guessing today’s results are not going to be all that good.
It simply an opinion on what you think of their chances. Even if you vote a 1 (which I didn’t), it doesn’t mean you stop rooting for them because you think they have no chance. You can be a fan and still try to be realistic.
Thinking they have no chance does NOT = realism. It = negativity.
I’m not saying “there’s no way the Braves don’t win the World Series this year and every year after unto eternity.”
Realism means realizing yes, this team has faults. Yes, winning may not be the end result. But I believe this team can beat the Giants. And because of that, I have confidence.
You used thinking they have no chance and assigned that to realistic thinking. I, on the other hand, disagree that it is realistic to think they have no chance. No where did I say you personally felt they had no chance.
I am merely going by the words you used in your post. You may want to reread what you posted and then you might follow where I’m going with that.
It was a single expression of what it doesn’t mean to vote 1.
Or to put it another way, voting 1 means (the way I interpreted the poll) that you think the Braves have a 10% chance of winning it all. 10% does not equal 0%.
Because we have a better bench. We have a better bullpen. We have better starters in the next 2 game. Derek Lowe matched Lincecum pitch for pitch. Their offense is just as terrible as ours. 2 of the next 3 games are in Atlanta, where we had the best record in the Majors. If/When we see Tim Lincecum again, he will not be as dominant – based on the track record of our guys against him.
I went with a 7. overall looks good…..one big concern (runs, please)
If we could split the games here, and return to ATLANTA tied 1 – 1, it would be fantastically-fantastic (yes i did just say that), it’s a no brainer how 1-1 is a better then being down 0-2. I would love to bring a 1 – 1 tie to OUR home field. Our pitching was wonderful, and defense not terrible. yes, i grand error, but we should almost expect this (said with sarcasm). What we shouldnt expect is being shut out. its the playoffs, lets try to support our pitchers. I can’t wait to the world series when we will be able to use Tim Hudson as our DH (again, sarcasm).
But playoff chances? Hard to go over a 4 for me with the way our bats have looked over the past couple of weeks and the way our defense has played. Still, a win tonight would probably bump me up to a 7 or an 8 because of our home record. We just gotta get a win on the road.
There is a difference between what will happen and what could happen.
Thus, on paper, a 10% chance may be mathematically correct; however, we all know that the Braves have potential to beat every team in baseball consistently.
If McCann, Lee, Infante, J-Hey etc. hit and Hanson, Huddy, Lowe, the Pen etc. each pitch like he is capable of hitting or pitching, then we definitely have a better than 10% chance of winning.
I realize that some guys are stuggling, but I am choosing to have faith that the team will start to click. Otherwise, why am I watching? Call me a homer, too ;-)
The difference is actually between what you think will happen and what could happen. Of course, as long as they’re alive, they still have a chance. I don’t think the poll is asking whether or not you think they have a chance though. It’s asking what you think of their chances. Otherwise, it should just be a yes/no question.
I will vote an 8...

That bullshit call would not have mattered had Omar actually, you know, put his glove in front of the ball.
