The Braves have announced their lineup for tonight. Here it is.
1. Omar Infante - 3B
2. Jason Heyward - RF
3. Derrek Lee - 1B
4. Brian McCann - C
5. Alex Gonzalez - SS
6. Matt Diaz - LF
7. Brooks Conrad - 2B
8. Rick Ankiel - CF
9. Derek Lowe - P
I like it. When I thought about it this morning, I just had a good feeling about Matty Diaz. Not sure why, but I just wanted him in the lineup. Bobby obliged, and put together a pretty good looking lineup. One could complain about Rick Ankiel, but he's no worse than Melky or McLouth, and his defense is much better. AT&T is a huge park and we'll need him to cover some ground out there. Besides that, no real complaints.

Hopefully Ankiel won't have to cover any ground
If Lowe has his sinker working.

This.
The Keith Lockhart Era - October 7, 2010
I approve
You know how Heyward started the regular season… I wonder how he’ll start the post-season?!
SuperHeyward - October 7, 2010
Not bad. Would have like to have seen Heyward third, followed by Derrek Lee and Brian McCann, but I am not Bobby Cox.
ChrisK562 - October 7, 2010
but then you put a bad hitter in one of the top 2 spots
telemakhos - October 7, 2010
oh yeah, I agree.
ChrisK562 - October 7, 2010
I think what we all really wish...
…is that we had Chipper or Prado to stick in the second spot if we moved Heyward to third.

I don’t understand Diaz in LF over McLouth, other than that I have no complaints. I don’t expect Gonzalez to do what he did to Lincecum last time, which is the only justification Bobby could have for batting him fifth. One good thing, four of the top five hitters have a .364 or better average against Lincecum for their careers. The other one is Jason Heyward.
BenDuronio - October 7, 2010
McLouth is McTerrible in the McField.
BullManUGA - October 7, 2010
I put the over/under on balls hit to LF at 3.5 with Lowe pitching.
BenDuronio - October 7, 2010
And I’ll take the under
eaheckman10 - October 7, 2010
There is a second justification for batting Gonzalez 5th.
Our 5-9 hitters are all so bad that it doesn’t really matter what order we bat them in.
cavebird - October 7, 2010
Thank God
Nate is not in the lineup!
HEYJUDE - October 7, 2010
LOVE IT
Nathan Lowery - October 7, 2010
Giants lineup:
Torres
Sanchez
Huff
Posey
Burrell
Uribe
Sandoval
Ross
Professor Snape
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
Torres, Huff, and Posey. Get them out and we will win. Don’t leave sinkers up to Burrell.
BenDuronio - October 7, 2010
I'd also be careful with Cody
Yakker - October 7, 2010
If we give up a damn thing to Pat the ..."bat" I'll be yelling at the TV.
The Keith Lockhart Era - October 7, 2010
Don't insult Alan Rickman
He’s got at least a foot on Lincecum.
royhobbs - October 7, 2010
He also got dropped off of Nakatomi Plaza bu Bruce Willis
BravesDawg16 - October 7, 2010
I'm pumped
I hope Sea Bass surprises the hell out of us. The dude was legit at one point.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
yeah it’s weird it feels like everytime a dude carries the team for like a week all of sudden he can’t hit for a month.
SuperHeyward - October 7, 2010
I hope it’s just a funk and he can break out at the right time.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
let a Giants fan in on the joke
Who do y’all refer to as Sea Bass?
Countificus - October 7, 2010
Alex Gonzalez.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
Alex Gonzalez
Apparently, Kevin Millar invented the name, based on his poofy cheeks and sour expression
royhobbs - October 7, 2010
I don't like the name
I’ll just go with Gonzo. Or maybe Not-Yunel Escobar.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
But he looks like a fish

BenDuronio - October 7, 2010
you could go with Braves 2010 Home Run King.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
If he hit them on the Braves you could.
BenDuronio - October 7, 2010
Alex Gonzalez
Yakker - October 7, 2010
I like Derek Lee hitting 3rd. Still wish it were Jason batting 3rd and Ankiel batting 2nd, but I’m fine otherwise.
Sparhawk - October 7, 2010
If Rick Ankiel was hitting 2nd
I wouldn’t even bother watching.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
lol
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
Meh. I just want Heyward batting 3rd. But this lineup looks good. Better than McCann hitting 3rd.

OT: Which is worst to be right now: Rays or Reds?
Both team clearly have big holes that nobody hail to point out. (Starting pitching)
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
You could have put the second best pitcher in the world on the mound yesterday and they still would have lost. They haven’t had good pitching all year, but an incredible offense.
BenDuronio - October 7, 2010
that is a fair point. Halladay was on yesterday. Weird to hear comparisons of him to Maddux but I guess that’s fair.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
The BP still shut out the “potent Phils offense” for 7 innings after the 2nd inning meltdown by Volquez.
Which I’m sure got NO press today.
NCChopper - October 7, 2010
Reds
It’s not so much the Rays need SP, because I still like Price/Shields/Garza, but the Rangers are hitting everything hot, and the Rays are practically stepping up to the plate without bats. SO many 1-2-3 innings.
royhobbs - October 7, 2010
outside of the Yankees, Reds and Rays have the worst rotation in the playoffs in my opinion.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
The Rays have a fine rotation, they’re just slumping. Just like our rotation late August early September…excluding Lowe of course.
king of games - October 7, 2010
Rays
Expectations were much higher.
Yakker - October 7, 2010
It’s like one minute they win the AL East, then the next minute they are about to be out of playoffs before the weekend.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
I haven’t watched either game because of work, but the matchups with Texas were tough for TB. Lee neutralized Price and the Rays other starters are in a funk right now.
Yakker - October 7, 2010
I kinda blame managing on the Rays game. If you are going to lose, might as well let Shields get blasted than a reliever.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
Down 0-2, I’m not sure it would really matter…
Yakker - October 7, 2010
The problem is with the offense, not the rotation. This is the team that’s been no-hit three or four times in the last 2 years. No consistency at all.
king of games - October 7, 2010
that is a fair point. Hard to win when your offense puts up 1 run then 0.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
Can't wait for the game
Let’s go Braves!!
BigG1392 - October 7, 2010
Braves have got this
How can they not? The lineup is filled with former and current All-Stars:
Nate McLouth
Chipper Jones(DL)
Omar Infante
Martin Prado(DL)
Alex Gonzalez
Jason Heyward
Troy Glaus
Brian McCann
Billy Wagner
Takashi Saito
Tim Hudson
Derek Lowe
Derrek Lee
Or how about guy’s who have rings?
Derek Lowe
Derrek Lee
Alex Gonzalez
Eric Hinske
Melky Cabrera
Chipper Jones
Troy Glaus
Not to mention former #1 prospect Rick Ankiel patrolling CF. Best backup catcher in baseball? Check. Guy in the pen with a 17 K/9? Check. Guy who can hit two pinch-hit, game-winning grand slams in the same season? Check. Eric Hinske? Check.
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
Former No. 1 pitching prospect, lol.

I had to laugh but the man’s 21, I’m only 23 and he looks like he’s got me by about 5 years
Virginia9er - October 7, 2010
Giants fan here...
I just don’t see how the Braves are going to score outside of Infante, Heyward, and McCann
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
My feelings are the same with Torres, Huff, and Posey.
BenDuronio - October 7, 2010
My guess, one team makes a stupid throwing error that leads to a big inning. Both teams will pitch well, I feel.
BenDuronio - October 7, 2010
good to know I’m not alone in my thinking.
Sparhawk - October 7, 2010
Yup
and probably from 3rd base either way.
king of games - October 7, 2010
Conrad is at 2nd. Probably not.
BullManUGA - October 7, 2010
Infante and Conrad are both better at 2nd than 3rd.
king of games - October 7, 2010
Infante is better at third than Conrad is. Way better.
BullManUGA - October 7, 2010
Uribe 24 homers: 248/.310/.440…1.8 oWAR
Burrell 18 homers: 266/.364/.509…1.9 oWAR
Panda is hitting .360/.407/.560 past two weeks
Other than the big three…Braves have no one above 1.0 oWar
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
Burrell is pretty solid, but Uribe is no better than Alex Gonzalez. The Panda is fat, and has sucked all season. Go check his stats against right-handed pitchers.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
Trust...I watched the Giants all season
Uribe is not Alex Gonzalez…Alex has a oWar of 0.4…Uribe has a oWar of 1.8…big difference (not to mention the homer difference)
Panda has been bad all season except the last month…he has been crushing the ball
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
The homer difference?
Doesn’t Uribe have ONE more HR than Gonzalez on the year?
Cite homers all you want, Braves pitchers have given up the fewest in baseball.
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
lol
you’re not considering Gonzalez’s stats in Toronto, smartass. I know those weren’t with the Braves, but you can’t just discredit half of a season.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
And at the same time....
….he’s using Burrell’s full season stats.
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
September Stat Line – .207/.266/.310
I don’t think that’s exactly “crushing the ball”…
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
He’s been “crushing the ball” in BP. That counts right?
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
Hey...mock all you want...
I am telling you what he looked like recently…there is difference between the Panda of most of the season versus the last few weeks
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
Mock?
You’re saying a guy who has an OPS of .576 in September has been killing the ball…
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
Yeah, but he's really feasting on those BP fastballs
Yakker - October 7, 2010
Okay...but that like me consider Guillen's stats in KC...
Alex has hit 6 homers in 292 BA while in ATL…
He also hit 5, 9, 16, and 8 homers in past four seasons
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
Don't the Braves own the season series....
…against the Giants? My goodness, how did they score enough runs to accomplish that, considering their low oWAR…..
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
oWAR, what is it good for
Yakker - October 7, 2010
to be fair, when we played Giants, we had Chipper and Prado in the lineup.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
Kind of...
One of them was out for each series.
So we had 1/2 of Chipper and Prado.
-C
cthabeerman - October 7, 2010
Owned?
ATL owned 4 and lost 3…
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
Wow...
It’s pretty obvious that I’m using the word ‘own’ in terms of winning more than they lost against the Giants. Not saying they’ve humiliated them….
Come on, man.
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
lol
you’re the one who said “owned.” No Braves fan ever said that.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
Quote
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
Oops...you're right
for the first time in the thread.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
Matter of opinion...
Braves are a completely different hitting lineup without Prado…the Braves’ batting stats in Sept bare that out…
I just wanted an insider’s prospective as to the Braves lineup…I have not really watched them so I don’t know much about them…I know Heyward, McCann and Infante is good…Lee has underperformed but everyone else is unknown to me..
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
We are a different team without Prado...
but you came over here acting like we aren’t going to score and the Giants have some offensive juggernaut. I don’t think so.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
I never said anything in my original about the Giants
I just said I don’t see how the Braves score runs outside of your top three…that’s it…
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
Please your Giants sucked on offense in September as well So I guess they won't score either.
FitzFan - October 7, 2010
Probably not...
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
In that conext own doesn’t mean “ZOMG PWN!” It means that we took it. Like owning a tiebreaker.
BullManUGA - October 7, 2010
I hate to play the theoreticals
But had Billy Wagner not thrown an off-speed pitch to Edgar Renteria, it would have been 5-2. Pretty sure that’s not going to happen again, even if Edgar were playing.
royhobbs - October 7, 2010
Actually, you could say 6-1 even
Chipper made an error in the 9th to let the Giants tie the game back up. You have to give credit to the Giants for coming back, but still…
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
Seriously?
I just spent 3 hours reviewing the Giants offense.
It’s pretty crappy, just like ours is. Each team has 3 good hitters and a few average hitters. There’s no reason to discuss this.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
it’s crazy to think that if the Braves face Reds and Giants faced Phils, this would be a different post season.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
If only we didn’t crap the bed in late-August and September
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
I think you’ve got that reversed because he’s actually he’s much better against RHP than against LHP. (.779 OPS vs lefties this season) Also his home/away splits are ridiculous. (.901 OPS at home this season) So Panda riding a hot streak over the last couple weeks and at home and facing a righty? Yea, as a Giants fan I feel pretty ok about that.
sam23 - October 7, 2010
*(.779 OPS vs righties this season)
sam23 - October 7, 2010
Oh, yeah. Meant against lefties.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010
Yea I don’t feel real great about his late game at bats vs the lefties out of your pen. I also don’t feel real great about Cody Ross hitting against Lowe. Ross’ platoon splits vs righties are ugly. Between Pablo and Ross you’ve basically got one really good hitter.
sam23 - October 7, 2010
And I just don't see how the Giants are going to score outside of Huff, Posey, and Torres....
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
I have a feeling it’ll come down to fielding. This will be all pitching and little hitting. It’ll be the errors that will do a team in.
Braves fielding isn’t that good.
Sparhawk - October 7, 2010
Atleast the Braves don't have 3 former DHs playing the Field.
BobbyD31 - October 7, 2010
Well....
….they do have a handful of guys who are replacement level in the field.
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
Offensively maybe...
But other than Conrad, our defense is solid at all positions tonight.
BigG1392 - October 7, 2010
Same with ours. Pretty solid everywhere other than Burrell.
sam23 - October 7, 2010
Not if Gullien plays.
FitzFan - October 7, 2010
Not on the postseason roster.

Chief Noc-A-Homa - October 7, 2010
Check swing (it was a swing) went against them, then on the next pitch Young hit a 2 run homer.
BullManUGA - October 7, 2010
There was a check swing by Young that wasn’t called a strike when it obviosly should have and Youg proceeded to hit a homer.
king of games - October 7, 2010
He was just pissed in general. To be fair, the check swing was a strike and (I think it was Young) should have went to the dugout. Instead Home Run and basically ball game.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
How he he an ass for being pissed on that crap call? Maddon should've just left Shields in, Qualls is crap.

I’m calling it now.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
did he won that show...?
Hektor DiPaula - October 7, 2010
Completely Agree
We really need him to produce.
kauf67 - October 7, 2010
He was one of our most consistent hitters at the end of the season. All we really need is for him (or someone else) to go on a hot streak for a few games.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 7, 2010
My Prediction
Im predicting J-Hey and Matty to have big hits tonight, and i don’t know why, but im predicting ankiel to have a really big hit too.
Crystal Kim - October 7, 2010
Like he did in Chicago? Man who would have thought that hit saved the season (in grand scheme of things)
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010

romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
Funny
It did save us from a potential tie-breaker game with SD.
BigG1392 - October 7, 2010
You could say that about 25 or so games.
king of games - October 7, 2010

romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
Nope, playoffs take too long as it is.
king of games - October 7, 2010
MLB playoffs are not that long. Look at Hockey and NBA, those playoffs are looooonnnggggg.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
They’re not played outdoors during the winter. When most World Series are played in the northeast, you can’t have them playing into deep October.
king of games - October 7, 2010
solution, cut down on the off days between games or just move the season up a few weeks.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
But then we run into the same problems in March/April
eaheckman10 - October 7, 2010
I don’t understand how adding three games would be that big of a problem. That’s basically three days and not 2 weeks.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
Because Selig, in a show of figuratively fellating the media execs again, would find a way to turn 3 games into 6 or 7 days with off days.
J-Freak - October 7, 2010 via mobile
Moving the season up means your way into the rainy season and games are all cancelled. Can’t cut the off days because the players need them, and they’re also used for makeup games sometimes.

kauf67 - October 7, 2010

I’m hoping to see a Chapman/Howard matchup this series.
kauf67 - October 7, 2010

UMDBHIK - October 7, 2010

What is different about Lowe recently? New pitch? Better control?
calbearjd - October 7, 2010
His sinker is sinking.
Lennox - October 7, 2010
He has tweaked some things with his delivery apparently as far as I’ve been able to surmise.
UMDBHIK - October 7, 2010
He has a different delivery when he pitches. More upright than slouch. Makes his slider more effective pitch.
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
It’s also been said he’s much more effective in the cooler weather because he sweats less and blisters don’t develop as quickly

That is actually exactly the lineup as I would have written it. Diaz has been starting to swing the bat better lately, it seems. Maybe he’s going to go on one of the streaks he has about once a year where he looks like he is swatting beachballs. If he gets hot like he can, the Braves offense suddenly won’t look so bad.
BrandonG - October 7, 2010
In an unprecedented event, Matt Diaz just misses out on winning the World Series MVP, despite putting up a line of .667/.800/1.250. Unfortunately for him, Jason Heyward put up a line of .750/.900/1.333.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 7, 2010

I’ve had the same thought. He also picked the Braves to lose in his playoff predictions fanpost. It seems he’s a team player, after all.

KJDH2154 - October 7, 2010
It’s amazing in that nobody follows the rules and nobody cares.
BullManUGA - October 7, 2010
ding ding ding!
KJDH2154 - October 7, 2010
it would be easier to know why you hate it?
romone_braves91 - October 7, 2010
It’s just getting worse and worse throughout the years, no fundamentals anymore, it’s to the point where they would just rather not play any defense at all, let the offense score, so the other team can get the ball back and make some razzle dazzle play. 5 steps still doesn’t count as a travel, the “superstars” can get away with whatever they want. It is a glorified And-1 league with no defense, college basketball is a million times better. And then you have players like LeBron who think an ESPN special is necessary to announce your decision, would guys like Peyton Manning do that? Roy Halladay? in other words the “superstars” in the other sports. The NBA is a me, me, me league, far from a team game, which explains that all the press conferences of “The Big 3” is only those 3….yet they say that it’s going to take a whole team effort to win, then why separate yourselves from the rest of the team and take all the glory…..glory of having never won anything yet
KJDH2154 - October 7, 2010
I used to agree with you.
However, most of these alleged grievances are overblown problems that were had in the 90’s and early 00’s but have since been remedied. There are so many exciting players in the NBA these days, and they don’t have to “take 5 steps” to do amazing things.
And as far as high scoring goes, when the NBA was at it’s most unwatchable was when the 90’s Heat and Knicks type teams were winning with overly physical defense and slogging offenses. Basketball isn’t a contact sport. It’s supposed to be much easier to score than in other sports. I’ve never understood why any one prefers low scoring, defensively minded basketball. If you want that type of action there’s baseball, hockey, and soccer that you can watch. All three of those sports are geared more toward keeping the other team from scoring more than scoring yourself. Basketball is supposed to be free-flowing and fast (see the entire NBA in the 1980’s and the current Phoenix Suns/Dallas Mavericks/OKC Thunder)
That said, I hate what LeBron did. The thing with LeBron is that the way he plays is the exact antithesis of every problem you listed with the actual play during the games. He sees the court and moves like no 6’8" guy ever. It’s incredible to watch. More incredible, though, is Kevin Durant. If you watch one NBA game this year, make sure it’s an OKC Thunder game. If you don’t enjoy it, then you just don’t like the sport.
This was way too long and OT. I apologize. lol.. Go Braves!
J-Turn14 - October 7, 2010
Go Kings!
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010 via mobile

kauf67 - October 7, 2010
It’s hard. (TWSS)
Seriously though, you can just throw the ball down the court to get an easy bucket. And passing it into the paint is much more difficult. You also can no longer to a 360 windmill slam from the free throw line with Shaq, so that’s also nice.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010 via mobile
I haven’t owned a basketball game since Charles Barkley Shut Up and Jam
