Here is your NLDS Braves roster:
PITCHERS (11): Brandon Beachy (RH), Mike Dunn (LH), Kyle Farnsworth (RH), Tommy Hanson (RH), Tim Hudson (RH), Craig Kimbrel (RH), Derek Lowe (RH), Cristhian Martinez (RH), Peter Moylan (RH), Jonny Venters (LH) and Billy Wagner (LH)
CATCHERS (2): Brian McCann and David Ross
INFIELDERS (7): Brooks Conrad, Troy Glaus, Alex Gonzalez, Diory Hernandez, Eric Hinske, Omar Infante and Derrek Lee
OUTFIELDERS (5): Rick Ankiel, Melky Cabrera, Matt Diaz, Jason Heyward and Nate McLouth
Yes, Melky was always going to be on it. I can't believe Cristhian Martinez is on the roster, but he's a healthy hard-throwing arm.
I shudder to say it, but there are only three members of the 2005 playoff team on this roster: Tim Hudson, Brian McCann, and ... wait for it ... Kyle Farnsworth!

So Dunn replaced Saito
and Martinez essentially took the last spot, presumable over Freeman?
golfballs03 - October 7, 2010
Dunn replaced EOF, Martinez replaced Saito.
Scott Coleman - October 7, 2010 via mobile
oh thats right
and the ones battling out for the last spots were Glaus, Hinske, and Freeman.
golfballs03 - October 7, 2010
not hinske
Melky
golfballs03 - October 7, 2010
kimbrel and dunn in the same atlanta´s team
how many that happenned before September?
joshant - October 7, 2010
*i´m not complaining, i just want to know that interesting fact
joshant - October 7, 2010
...what?
joshmaurer - October 7, 2010
Does anyone else
think it would be beneficial to carry a third catcher and only ONE of McLouth/Ankiel to be able to utilize Ross’ bat of the bench more??? Bobby will never PH with Ross for fear of losing hisbackup catcher…. Ross deserves more AB’s!!!
HansonManCrush - October 7, 2010
Honestly
I agree except i would remove Melky for the 3rd catcher
drumzalicious - October 7, 2010
This team needs Melky
to buy the pregame donuts…
HansonManCrush - October 7, 2010
Do you really think the donuts will make it to the clubhouse if Melky is in charge?

Ah
hahahahahahaha

This is the 15th consecutive Braves postseason appearance
that I have been left off the postseason roster.
I guess there’s always hope for the NLCS and WS.

That makes me...
That makes me long for the days of OTIS NIXON at the top of the order!!
HalleyGator - October 7, 2010
He’d probably still be more useful then Melky.
Broccoman - October 7, 2010
All the Melky bashing! Ankiel is hitting .145 in away games. Hudson has a higher batting average away from home. Ankiel is pathetic, should be left off the regular and postseason roster.
HeyMikey - October 7, 2010
Yeah, but we know BA is poor way of measuring hitters.
Just look at how awesome is Melky's OPS.Tarkus - October 7, 2010
I wasnt patting melky on the back, I am just sick of Ankiel. what a waste.
HeyMikey - October 7, 2010
he’s got an arm though and can play CF better than melky, therefore he stays in my mind…
forgotten_glory - October 7, 2010
Ankiel screams
“late inning defensive replacement”
UMDBHIK - October 7, 2010
Name Fail.
I meant Ankiel.
Too much Melky talk lately, I guess.

In the playoffs...
…I think you might think about using the backup catcher as a pinch-hitter more often and then just suffer through the emergency catcher if forced.
As for Melky, yes, he was always going to be on it. Yes, he sucks, but does he really suck significantly more than our other non-Heyward outfield options? No, not really. I imagine Melky might get a start, too. It’s not like the others really deserve the starts either.
cavebird - October 7, 2010
Diaz
deserves it more… he can hit… he just needs to be in the lineup more than once every three to four days to get in a groove
HansonManCrush - October 7, 2010
Hell Yes
Diaz should be playing LF over Cabrera or McLouth.
bighop - October 7, 2010
Only if Diaz and Hinske both had their legs break off at the ankles should they not be the ones in LF.

We were at a wedding on Saturday. I didn’t tear up during the ceremony, and I didn’t tear up at the reception when her elderly grandpa got up out of his wheelchair to dance with the bride. BUT i did tear up on the drive from the ceremony to the reception while listening to Chipper’s speech on the radio. My girlfriend won’t let that one go hahaha

HansonManCrush - October 7, 2010

MBL1 - October 7, 2010
I wouldn’t hate seeing Sea Bass in the 3-spot between Heyward and Lee/McCann.
Unconventional, but think about it. With Heyward’s OBP and Lee/McCann following, Sea Bass could get a lot more fastballs. And fastballs = dingers.
Yakker - October 7, 2010
I would prefer the 3 hole hitter not be someone who is not that good at getting on base.
UMDBHIK - October 7, 2010
Yeah, but I think Sea Bass in the 3-hole would do a whole Chris Duncan kinda thing.
Yakker - October 7, 2010
he grounds into double plays tho…im not basing this off of any stat, lol…just always seems to be the case in big situations…

Am I an ass hole for selling this to a random Braves fan from TC instead of inviting a friend who is a Giants fan?? LOL. I guess I figure, why add another Giants fan to the 50k that will be there already.
I am going to try and head in early, leave Sactown around noon, hopefully leave from the Pleasant Hill BART around 130 or so, in The City by 330.
We can meet up somehow. My email is my TC name @ gmail
mvandonsel - October 7, 2010
Hey
I’m hardly a random Braves fan…been on TC for years, after a while it feels like you know people, ya know? Plus, us California Braves fans need to stick together…
Anyway, that timing works for me. I work in downtown SF, and I’ll try to get out by 5p at the latest.
I’ll send you an e-mail.
Yakker - October 7, 2010
Random was the wrong word...my bad...I know you've been on here forever.
I just know a ton of Giants fans, so hooking up somebody I know from TC is unexpected. However, it would be my pleasure, California Braves fans definitely have to stick together. Shoot me an email. If I get to SF early enough I might be able to drop off the ticket.

1st in the Franchise, Braves have 7 rookies in the postseason roster
joshant - October 7, 2010
A little disbelief this group made the playoffs. Losing Chipper, Prado and Jurrjens, having all these 4th outfielders, pretty unbelievable. 7 rookies on the playoff roster, that’s just nuts. But somehow, some way, I can see this bunch being competitive. They can beat anybody, just need a few timely hits.
bighop - October 7, 2010
all it would take is a few timely hits
to make this a timeless team :D
Jareth Cutestory - October 7, 2010

king of games - October 7, 2010

Jareth Cutestory - October 7, 2010
i love it!
joshmaurer - October 7, 2010
We had 3 Aces in playoff
+ Chipper, Andruw, Klesko, Javy Lopez and only won 1 WS
Maybe with a bunch of rookies, we can win the WS. Rookies are hungry for titles
joshant - October 7, 2010
And those other guys weren't?
Tarkus - October 7, 2010
I’m thinking he’s got the opposite of the truth there.. I would think a grizzled veteran would play for championships; the rookies are just glad to be there.
joshmaurer - October 7, 2010
And probably figure they'll have plenty more opportunities.
Tarkus - October 7, 2010
It barely did
And they did have Prado until very close to the end. This is definitely one of the weakest versions of the 2010 team to ever take the field.
SS451 - October 7, 2010
I should say...
THE weakest. Yes, there were times when Glaus was playing 1B and hitting 0-for-a-gazillion, but we always had Prado then, and Chipper for all but about a week of it.
SS451 - October 7, 2010
Yup
This lineup in minor league bad. That being said, I really like our postseason pitching staff.
king of games - October 7, 2010
I’m surprised 05’s Baby Braves didn’t have more rookies on the roster. Just off the top of my head I know Francoeur, McCann, Devine, and Kelly were in the mix. Wasn’t that LaRoche’s first year before assuming full time duty, or was he up in 04? Kyle Davies debuted that year too; can’t remember if he stayed up through the postseason though.
J-Freak - October 7, 2010 via mobile

BigG1392 - October 7, 2010
hopefully
they’ll only bring him in after we get a 20-run lead… but even then I’d be nervous
HansonManCrush - October 7, 2010
then he will allow 5 GS and then we should play 27 innings and use Ankiel as a pitcher
and lost the game

I mean it's tough
Do you pitch Farnsworth, who has zero clutch, or Venters whose arm is literally about to fall off
TurnerTheBurner - October 7, 2010
Are you asking me
…or Bobby Cox? He’ll pitch Venters every game this series, UNLESS his arm snaps off.

Braves need to be patient to start.....
Lincecum tends to get a little over amped in big games, so hopefully his adrenaline throws him off. I’d love to see the Braves do what they did in the first half, which J-Hey calls……..wait, bait, bash.
Man I wish there was a spot for Glaus somewhere.
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
Im so torn with this comment...
on the one hand, I tend to agree with patience at the plate… on the other, for the past month opposing pitchers seem to throw the first one right down the middle for a strike constantly, cause we NEVER swing at the first pitch.
I mean really, I was at the game last saturday, and do not think we swung at the first pitch once… patience is good, but lately its been a little ridiculous
knarf - October 7, 2010
Who all has rings on the Braves?
Chipper
Hinske
Melky
Lowe
Gonzo
Glaus
Lee
Anyone else?
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
Gonzo
has a ring?
Doest Saito? Wasn’t he on the ’07 Red Sox or was he in LA then?
HansonManCrush - October 7, 2010
Didn't Gonzo win one with the Marlins?
As well as Lee?
And I think Saito was in LA in 07
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
Ok...
I’m sure you’re right….
It’d be great for all the Braves to get rings in ’10
HansonManCrush - October 7, 2010
Gonzo & Lee – ’03, Marlins
Saito – ’07, LA – no ring
Infield Elephant - October 7, 2010
Someone notice that Farnsworth will play his 2nd consecutive postseason with the same team
with the difference that his last postseason game with this team was 5 years ago, same as the team.
joshant - October 7, 2010
it's obvious
Farnsie is the talisman we’ve been missing for the last half decade. Although it’d probably work just as well to make him the clubhouse janitor instead of a reliever…
Anthony Pace - October 7, 2010
That was also the year we let Julio Franco go.
I’d rather have him right now (at age 127) than Farnsy.
king of games - October 7, 2010
Fucking Melky. Ankle sucks but he can field at least. Freeman should be in there for glove alone.
TradeAndruw - October 7, 2010
The sideways throw against the Reds comes to mind...
TurnerTheBurner - October 7, 2010
i think about that every time i hear his name…
forgotten_glory - October 7, 2010
You realize DLee isn’t a slouch at the position, right? Further, you realize that Lee’s bat alone makes him more valuable than a 21 year old rookie who’s barely had his cup of coffee?
UMDBHIK - October 7, 2010
agreed
forgotten_glory - October 7, 2010
I don't think he's saying Freeman should start over Lee....
I think he’s just saying that at least Freeman brings something to the game, unlike Melky who’s a defensive and offensive liability.
But it’s perfectly understandable why Melky was put on the roster and Freeman was left off it. Braves already have 7 rookies.
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
How many first basemen do we really need on the postseason roster?
king of games - October 7, 2010
Only one if he could mash.
carpengui - October 7, 2010
I feel Lee's going to be locked in this series....
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010

Not too many baserunners are gonna test Ankiel’s arm. And in this series, that could make a big difference.

Yakker - October 7, 2010
according to sportscenter, no. Yes I watch sportscenter, only for the highlights.
MBL1 - October 7, 2010
Giants could be doing the Braves a favor there....
Braves generally struggle against soft tossers and lefties, Zito being both. Didn’t he shut the Braves down last time he faced them? I remember the Braves beating Cain and Sanchez, but can’t remember if it was Lincecum or Zito who beat them in that series…
Undocorkscrew - October 7, 2010
yea
i think zito beats us all the time…
forgotten_glory - October 7, 2010
I guess Zito’s ‘audition’ on Saturday cinched it. They lost trust in him (again).
carpengui - October 7, 2010
Zito should be traded at the deadline every year. Just like Laroche should be traded for every year at the deadline.

When Ross gets tired of pummeling Braves pitching, Ishikawa’s coming off the bench and hitting something hard, outcome of said hard hit ball TBD.
royhobbs - October 7, 2010
Wow, they’re really going with Bumgarner as their 4th, huh? In-ter-est-ing.

Would love to have one game in which their starter is run off by the third inning… just to see how that disrupts the rest of the proceedings.

The bartender knew who he was, but didn’t want to get a bad rep for refusing a baseball superstar, so he gave him nothing but O’Douls all night. But it turned into one of those psychology things, and Timmy thought it was real beer, and ended up getting blitzed anyway.

That near-beer
Can really uspet your stomach. Not that I’d know anything about that…

When you're a kid
Any booze will upset your stomach. I had a wine cooler when I was 9 and I thought I was going to die.

How would one be the opposite of “mind-numbingly” when drunk?
I’m not trying to question your phrase, I just think whoever came up with it was a bit odd.

Because I Got High
Lyrics and music by Tim Lincecum
I was gonna clean the ’pen until I got high
I gonna get up and find the broom but then I got high
Bullpen is still messed up and I know why
- cause I got high [repeat 3X]
I was gonna go to the clubhouse before I got high
I coulda cheated and struck you out but I got high
I am throwin’ bp next spring and I know why
Hey hey!
- cause I got high [repeat 3X]
I was gonna get on the mound and pitch but I got high
I just got a new Cy Young Award but I got high
now I’m selling ’em off and I know why
- cause I got high [repeat 3X]
I was gonna go to court before I got high
I was gonna pay my child support but then I got high
they took my arbitration and I know why
- cause I got high [repeat 3X]
I wasnt gonna run from the cops but I was high
I was gonna win LDS game one but I was high
Now I am in the minors and I know why
Hey hey!
- because I got high [repeat 3X]
I was gonna make love to you but then I got high
I was gonna eat some Panda too but then I got high
now I’m jacking off and I know why
- cause I got high [repeat 3X]
I’m gonna stop singing this song because I’m high
I’m pitching this whole lineup wrong because I’m high
and if I dont last one inning I know why
- cause I’m high [repeat 3X]
