The scary and evil Brian Wilson is just one of the Giants the Braves will face in the NLDS.
In an effort to know thy enemy better, I have exchanged some questions with the esteemed blogger over at McCovey Chronicles, Grant. Here are his questions to my answers:
Q: The Giants seemed to trade for every second-division outfielder they could find this year. Which guys make the roster, and among those who gets the starting jobs?
A: Is the seventy-third division where they found Jose Guillen? Wait, I don't want to offend the seventy-fourth division by suggesting such a thing...
Cody Ross makes the roster, and Jose Guillen makes the roster. The real question is who starts? Guillen was Bochy's starter for most of September, but he's in a wretched slump. Ross has been hot, but even if he hadn't, he's twice the defender that Guillen is. Since the Braves are righty-heavy, though, you'll see more Guillen, who doesn't have pronounced platoon splits.
Q: Your most expensive starter is not slated to start any of the first three games. Barry Zito is your only starter with postseason experience, is it a mistake to keep him from starting one of the first three games?
A: Hahahahahaha. Hahahahahahahahahaha. Hahahahahahahahahahaha.
No.
Seriously, though, if you reduced Jonathan Sanchez's strikeout rate by 33%, he'd be Barry Zito. So nuts to the price tag, go with the talent. I think it's fairly silly that a team could justifiably leave a league-average starter off the roster. That's the depth of the Giants' rotation, though.
Q: What can we expect from Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Jonathan Sanchez? What about them makes you think they'll be successful in the postseason or unsuccessful in the postseason?
A: I have absolutely no idea. That's what's so beautiful; that's what's so scary. Lincecum can get overamped for things like the All-Star Game, so I'm a little worried about his first playoff game. He's still Tim Lincecum, though. Matt Cain proved he could handle pressure when he shut down the Rockies in Colorado -- the meltdown against San Diego was the anomaly, not the other way around. Jonathan Sanchez might walk five, or he might strike out 12. He might do it in the same start. It's a talented staff, but they all have their quirks.
More after the jump...

Q: The crazy bearded one has your ninth inning covered, but do you feel confident in the rest of your bullpen to handle the earlier innings? Who are your key setup men?
A: I'm not sure if the bullpen has allowed an earned run since July. They've been freaky good.
Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez are the setup men. Romo has 83 different arm angles, and he can throw all sorts of different pitches with movement. He's had a fantastic year. Lopez is much better than I expected, though he'll be saved for lefty hitters only. Santiago Casilla throws 98 mph with a power curve, and his control has improved as the year has gone along.
Q: The Braves have had their share of injuries, but the Giants have been bitten by the injury bug too. Will the health status of any key players keep them off the roster or on the bench?
A: All things considered, the Giants have been pretty fortuitous with their injuries. Mark DeRosa went down with a melted wrist, but that only set the stage for Pat Burrell to come over. Aaron Rowand's broken face gave Andres Torres starts that he wouldn't have had at the start of the season. Edgar Renteria disintegrated, but that only allowed Juan Uribe to hit 24 home runs as the starting shortstop.
Maybe Renteria is too nicked up to be on the roster as a backup shortstop. Freddy Sanchez can't throw all that well right now, which might hurt when the Giants are trying to turn double plays. Other than that, the Giants are pretty healthy.
Q: Are you excited or afraid to be facing the Braves as opposed to the Reds, Phillies, or Padres?
A: I've always thought that kind of thing was nonsense. If a team wants to win the World Series, they have to beat three good teams. People need to quit worrying about which team was the juggernaut and which team limped in. In a short series, the Nationals are dangerous.
The Braves are a good team. I'm not excited to face them. I'm terrified, just as I would be with the Reds, Phillies, Rangers, Rays, Yankees, or Twins. It's not like the Giants are going to advance to the playoffs, look up, and see the Mariners roll into town.
Q: Make three predictions about this upcoming series?
A: 1. Loss of bladder control
2. Inappropriate words muttered in the general direction of Jose Guillen
3. Buster Posey and Jason Heyward will tie their wrists together and get into a knife fight, like those two guys in the "Beat It" video.

Checking some stats ...
(nothing else to do until Thursday night)
This is kinda hard since both the Braves and Giants have had substantial turnovers in personnel since the beginning of the year. But a few things stand out.
1. Double Plays handled. Braves 386 vs. Giants 255. That’s a big differential – almost one per game. You could argue, however, that it’s easily made up by their league-leading 8.20 K/9 innings figure. Maybe, but not quite, since Atlanta is only a half point behind them at 7.76 K/9.
2. Fielding. Giants had a scant 73 errors vs. 126 for the Braves. Likewise the team UZR/150 differential is 8.4 (SF) vs. -5.7 (ATL). Their team leader in errors is the Panda with 13. Of active players, ours is McCann (14) and the Sea Bass (8), though Brooks and Omar are coming on strong (7 each). Chipper, Yunel, and Glaus combined for 28 errors. In any reading, though, the Giants are a far superior fielding team.
3. Batting. The number are shockingly similar, excepting one figure: walks. Atlanta ranked 3rd in the majors in Walk percentage; the Giants barely made 21st. The Braves need to keep making their pitchers throw strikes. … and on that subject…
4. Pitching. Okay, the Giants strike out more per 9 Innings than anybody. But they’re also 3rd worst in the league in walks per 9 innings (while Atlanta is 3rd best). So we ought to make their guys throw more pitches and see how wild they get — they can afford to be selective.
My read: patience could win this thing.
carpengui - October 6, 2010
I don't think there's much question that we'll out-walk them...
It’s just a matter of whether we can scratch across enough hits to make some of those walks score.
Jacob Peterson - October 6, 2010
That has been the Braves biggest problem in the second half. They had no problem getting men on base, they just couldn’t do anything once they did. I sacrificing some KFC to Jabu in hopes of waking up the bats, and continuing the mojo they had in the last game against the Phils.
HeyMikey - October 6, 2010
Hell, for the postseason, it’s worth Zaxby’s
Broccoman - October 6, 2010
Next season, we should have an over/under for the number of chicken conversations.
Gage23 - October 6, 2010
I really don’t get the love-fest with their pitching staff and the complete ignorance of ours.
I think we match up well with anyone they throw at us, and vice-versa. It’s the bullpens where the difference lies, and that advantage CLEARLY is Atlanta’s, considering our BP had the 2nd best FIP behind only the Padres.
justincredubil02 - October 6, 2010
That’s right — chicks dig the strikeouts, I guess, but the Giants have been livin’ and dyin’ with the homer. If we can keep them in the ballpark, then I agree with pacgnosis — we have to scratch out hits to get the walkers home. Do that and stop throwing the ball all over the infield, and we’ll be good.
carpengui - October 6, 2010
On the home run point, it’s likely to be fairly chilly at Pac Bell on Thursday and Friday nights, which could do the Braves some favors as well, since the ball won’t jump.
Yakker - October 6, 2010
And Lowe will be less pink for the victory camera shots :-)
NCChopper - October 6, 2010
The Giants second half bullpen stats have been outrageous. Javier Lopez and Ramon Ramirez have a combined ERA of 0.98 with a BAA t of .174 of 46 innings.
Not to mention the season long stats of:
Santiago Casilla: ERA 1.95 BAA .208 IP 55.1
Sergio Romo: ERA 2.18 BAA .204 IP 62
Brian Wilson: ERA 1.81 BAA .220 IP 74.2
I’m not proposing that we don’t match starter for starter, nor am I arguing that our bullpen isn’t strong, but to say that the “advantage CLEARLY is Atlanta’s” might be a bit of an exaggeration.
AndrewWK - October 6, 2010
Also...isn't Saito out for the postseason?
I think the Giants have better SPs…Hudson is your best pitcher with Hanson no. 2 …Lowe can be great but he can also be Lowe…
The only uncertainty with the Giants SP is the lack of experience…but if Lincecum, Cain, and Sanchez pitch like they have for most of the year…it will be tough for ATL to take the series… We haven’t even talked about Bumgarner who had a 1.13 ERA, 1.094 WHIP, a 8 K/BB ratio, and a slash against line of .246/.273/.317 in Sept/Oct.
calbearjd - October 6, 2010
If Lincecum pitches like he has for most of the year, then Atlanta will probably beat him.
justincredubil02 - October 6, 2010
He was really good for most of the year. He had one horrific month.
sam23 - October 6, 2010
And have you seen Atlanta’s stats out of the pen?
Peter Moylan
Johnny Venters
Craig Kimbrel
EOF
Wagner
None of their numbers suck.
justincredubil02 - October 6, 2010
Arent Moylan and EOF not making the first round roster due to injury? Not arguing that the Braves bullpen isn’t strong, just noting that the Giants bullpen is comparably strong.
AndrewWK - October 6, 2010
I just learned of EOF today, but I haven’t heard anything about Pete.
justincredubil02 - October 6, 2010
What?
Moylan’s making it.
Scott Coleman - October 6, 2010
I'd back him up on this
The bullpens are very even this series. I think Atlanta might have the slight edge in depth if a starter gets knocked out early in a game, but I’d say that’s unlikely.
kauf67 - October 6, 2010
you left out where the Giants grounded into the 2nd most Double Plays in the League
and the Braves pretty much induce the most DPs
I do agree that the Braves being patient at the plate is going to serve them the best.
nuftjedi - October 6, 2010
Awesome Q&A.
The real question is, what happens if the knife fight spreads into a full-fledged brawl? Brian Wilson is kinda scary and all, but I’m pretty sure Farnsworth could break him like a twig (the only thing Farnsworth is good for, seemingly, is breaking guys like twigs). Throw in Hinske, and I think we’ve got a pretty good shot.
Jacob Peterson - October 6, 2010
A Giants fan here
A couple thing you are forgetting:
1) Brian Wilson is a ninja
2) Sergio Romo is just as crazy as Wilson
3) We have Guillen
4) We have Guillen
calbearjd - October 6, 2010
lol
Good point, but we’re also not managed by Mike Scioscia.
royhobbs - October 6, 2010
Wrong California team
We have Bochy…he can take out two or three guys with his huge head alone
calbearjd - October 6, 2010
I meant that Guillen's rage isn't nearly as provoked
Unless he sees Mike Scioscia. See now you made me explain it.
royhobbs - October 6, 2010
Oh...understanding failure
Guillen does not need Scioscia to exert his superpower of rage…see Pedro Martinez
He also removed an ingrown toenail himself while in KC…
calbearjd - October 6, 2010
This is also very valid
But I still have to put my money on Kyle Farnsworth against all of them. He’s got like four inches and 30 lbs. of muscle on Guillen, and I imagine he could spin in a circle repeatedly with his arms outstretched and beat any cleared opposing bench like Zangief from street fighter.
royhobbs - October 6, 2010
Farnsworth is literally a black belt. I don’t think anyone beats him.
cbwilk - October 6, 2010
You also aren’t suppose to hit a guy with glasses. Thats just basic playground rules.
McCann and McWill - October 6, 2010
I think I heard somewhere that Kimbrel has a black belt in taekwondo, or however you spell it.
MBL1 - October 6, 2010
Really? Guess I’m lucky I got away with calling him short…
cbwilk - October 7, 2010
Guillen swings and misses too often.
bwellnjonesco - October 6, 2010
Is having Guillen supposed to be a good thing?
TonyAlmeyda - October 6, 2010
Maybe
Guillen isn’t official, but could very well be verifiably, clinically psychotic. Those kinds of guys are good to have on your side in fights.
royhobbs - October 6, 2010
See Dukes, Elijah.
Yakker - October 6, 2010
Glaus, Hinske, Farnsworth, Lee, Heyward, Diaz, and Billy Wagner (he looks like a guy that would fight anybody no matter what the odds of winning would be) would be a force in a brawl against anybody in the league.

Yakker - October 6, 2010
This series should be awesome.
These are two teams very few though would be here, and no one (aside from the fans and players) believes either can win th NL. The teams match up so evenly its werid. I remember when we played the Giants during the regular season, a Giants fan came here and said, that this would be an awesome NLDS. Well it should be, although Linecum really scares me, and so does Wilson.
Shoert - October 6, 2010
This will be a 1-3 run differential series
I just hope Braves are on the right side. Too bad we can not produce 5 runs like we used to back in May for the auto win.
romone_braves91 - October 6, 2010
Pretty sure Jason will win, cuz he’s the reason Waldo is hiding.
MBL1 - October 6, 2010 via mobile
I’m pretty sure Waldo is hiding b/c of Melky being in the lineup (and most likely in the 5 spot).
romone_braves91 - October 6, 2010
No, that’s why Braves fans are hiding…..well, more like rolled up in a ball in a dark corner crying than hiding.
king of games - October 6, 2010
OT: Anybody hear about the Halos?
They are going to ruin the market for Crawford and Werth by giving them lots and lots of money. Looks like the Braves are back to square one with feeling needs by trade or farm system. Ugh.
romone_braves91 - October 6, 2010
They were unlikely options anyway. We need to utilize our pitching depth in the minors to trade for an outfielder like DeJesus, Braun, or Pence.
king of games - October 6, 2010
Braun would be awesome but crazy expensive (meaning in prospects). I bet Brewers would ask for Julio Teheran at least. The package we would send would be equal to the Tex trade.
romone_braves91 - October 6, 2010
I’m pretty sure he meant Joseph Braun, a AA-outfielder who slashed 220/310/400 in Allatoona this year, because to suggest that the Brerwers would deal Ryan Braun would be certifiably insane.
Yakker - October 6, 2010
lol…I did not realize that there was more than one Braun. I’m ignorant when it comes to other teams farm system.
romone_braves91 - October 6, 2010
He was making fun of “king of games”
McGriff the Crime Dog - October 6, 2010
I’d be fine giving up pretty much anything BUT Teheran, and I think we have enough to get a deal done. The Brewers might be enticed by a package revolving around Minor, Delgado/Viscaino, and another prospect or two. The Brewers need pitching a lot more than offense,, and as it turns out, pitching is the one thing we have plenty of.
king of games - October 6, 2010
it would be hard to imagine Brewers giving up Braun while watching Fielder leave via trade or free agency. Their next problem will be power hitting.
romone_braves91 - October 6, 2010
Even without Fielder and Braun, they still have a ton of offense. I’m not possitive, but I think they also have a decent 1B power prospect in the minors as well, which is why they don’t want to overpay Fielder.
king of games - October 6, 2010
could have meant ryan braun the RP in the Royals organization…although he may be out of baseball now
Swo12bv - October 6, 2010
He was with the White Sox in AAA. He’s actually with the USA team down in Puerto Rico right now playing in the Pan Am games.
cbwilk - October 7, 2010
Also add Jacoby Ellsbury to that list.
king of games - October 6, 2010
I'd prefer Matt Kemp or maybe Justin Upton
But I wouldn’t give up Teheran, Delgado, or Viz. Maybe Beachy and a prospect, but then they’d need to send some cash our way.
Yakker - October 6, 2010
I don’t think either is really available.
king of games - October 6, 2010
Hmm...
Really? Maybe if we added Kawakami to the proposal?
Or what about Choo in Cleveland?
Yakker - October 6, 2010
i like choo
but he is a boras client, so i wouldn’t be willing to give up lots of prospects when i know he is probably gonna leave later…also he needs to make sure he can play first (with the whole korean army deal…)
forgotten_glory - October 6, 2010
We would probably have to pay someone to take KK, and Cleveland doesn’t have any reason to trade Choo, they have a pretty good core of young players. Ellsbury and DeJesus are probably the best that may be available, and Braun could probably be gotten if we were willing to overpay. I’m not that high on Pence.
king of games - October 6, 2010
Yeah, you’re right. Oh well, I guess we’re just stuck with Braun then.

You’re seriously still going on about this? Alright.
Scott Coleman - October 6, 2010
and in light of the fact that I have been warned recently
I would like to point out that is this a colloquism, not something i made up to be vulgar, and that c and mvhs took the forum in this direction
15ks - October 6, 2010
Oh calm down
no one is “warning” you. It’s no big deal.
Scott Coleman - October 6, 2010
Your warning
was warranted, if it’s for what I think it was.
What in the world did I do that “took the forum in this direction”??

Flag a guy for trolling. Then rec the same guy for standing up to someone who is trolling the said troll.
My work here is done.
ATL_BUC - October 6, 2010

MBL1 - October 6, 2010 via mobile

You took the bait. That was a softball, dude.
justincredubil02 - October 8, 2010
"Rays will win the world series in 6 games"
I’m an oracle or something.
Scott Coleman - October 6, 2010
you can’t proclaim yourself an oracle for predicting something that has yet to happen.
you can if they win in 6, but until you should probably hold your breath
Swo12bv - October 6, 2010
I wasn’t being serious
Scott Coleman - October 6, 2010

MikeTrain - October 6, 2010
Someone should crop one of those douchy “Affliction” shirts on Brian Wilson.
ChrisK562 - October 6, 2010
haha
i think of him more as a serial killer a-la charles manson than a ufc fighter wannabe. Meaning, he’s more likely to kill someone in a satanic ritual but less likely to stand any chance in an actual fair fight
15ks - October 6, 2010
I got a question...
how bad is their D, and just how scared should they be that they make multiple defensive miscues to blow it?
Mr. Sanchez - October 6, 2010
I've said it before, and I'll say it again:
Anyone who’s not terrified at the prospect of the Bravos hitting Halladay in the NLCS has not been paying attention.
SS451 - October 6, 2010
Ummmmm...
I am more worried about the Braves hitting the Giants…you know since we are playing them and all.
mvandonsel - October 6, 2010
And by "like" those two guys ...
in the Beat It video, you actually mean those two guys in Weird Al’s “Eat It” video with the rubber chicken.
StickRat - October 6, 2010
Divisional championship diversionary tactic
If you beat us she’s going to scream incessantly.
You’ll regret it.
victor frankenstein - October 7, 2010
I truly believe
this series will be the most competitive of any the entire postseason. We’re going to see some great baseball over the next 6 days.
